Server Module - Future Enhancements

Scope

  • Protocol and API runtime hardening for HTTP/1.1, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, WebSocket, MQTT, gRPC, and GraphQL.
  • Routing, auth, validation, and gateway resilience improvements for production clusters.
  • Operational hardening for long-running server processes under mixed workloads.

Design Constraints

  • All new endpoint paths must pass routing-layer authorization before handler dispatch β€” enforced via AuthMiddleware::authorize(...) gate in all privileged route registrations; validated by SCH-01..SCH-20 in tests/server/test_server_contract_hardening_focused.cpp (Target: Q2 2026 β†’ Completed Q3 2026)
  • OpenAPI and JSON-schema validation must remain source-driven from handler contracts (Target: Q4 2026)
  • gRPC and REST compatibility rules must remain additive in active major versions (Target: ongoing)
  • Protocol fallback logic must remain deterministic under transient dependency failures (Target: Q4 2026)
  • Security and observability defaults must remain fail-closed in production mode (Target: ongoing)

Implementation Notes

Security and Access Control Hardening

Priority: High Target: Q2-Q4 2026 Status: Partially Complete

Completed

  • Voice API Bearer-Token JWT/OIDC Validation (#302)
    • Implements JWT signature validation using JWTValidator from JWKS
    • Validates token expiry, issuer, and audience claims
    • Supports token revocation via JTI blacklist
    • Fail-closed rejection semantics
    • Full test coverage with 12+ test cases covering all validation paths
    • Documentation with both code comments and test suite

Remaining

  • Complete route inventory for privileged endpoints and verify auth gate presence before handler dispatch.
  • Add regression tests for all special-case routes (early-routing blocks, admin paths, metrics/reporting paths).
  • Enforce a no-sensitive-data logging contract for token, scope, and auth failure diagnostics.

Protocol Reliability Hardening

Priority: High Target: Q4 2026

  • Expand HTTP/3 production tests for migration, packet loss, handshake variability, and fallback behavior.
  • Improve gRPC-web proxy resilience under upstream timeout and partial-failure conditions.
  • Add mixed protocol soak scenarios to validate fairness and backpressure behavior.

Gateway and Routing Hardening

Priority: Medium Target: Q4 2026

  • Extend distributed gateway failover tests (leader churn, quorum loss, partition/rejoin).
  • Expand smart-routing validation for skewed latency profiles and cache-hit prediction drift.
  • Harden request-coalescing fairness and timeout fallback under high duplicate load.

Serverless and Extensibility Hardening

Priority: Medium Target: Q1 2027

  • Introduce stricter CPU/memory/runtime policy envelopes for WASM handlers.
  • Add governance and signing checks for future plugin-based adapter loading.
  • Define deactivation and rollback semantics for failed dynamic extension updates.

Test Strategy

  • Route-level security regression suite for privileged and early-routing endpoints.
  • Fault-injection tests for distributed rate limiting, gateway quorum loss, and upstream dependency timeouts.
  • Protocol soak matrix (HTTP, HTTP/3, gRPC-web, WebSocket, MQTT) with sustained load and recovery validation.
  • Contract drift checks for OpenAPI/gRPC compatibility against source handlers and proto schemas.

Performance Targets

  • Maintain p99 request latency envelopes under mixed-protocol workload profiles.
  • Maintain throughput stability within agreed release regression budgets.
  • Keep auth/validation middleware overhead bounded under high concurrency.

Security / Reliability

  • Fail closed on invalid auth context and malformed security-sensitive request state.
  • Never process privileged operations before explicit access check completion.
  • Keep auditability of routing and auth decisions while avoiding sensitive value leakage.

Risk Backlog

Risk 1: Privileged route drift

Severity: High Signal: New or refactored routes bypass standardized auth gate sequencing. Mitigation: Route inventory checks plus regression tests in CI.

Risk 2: Distributed limiter consistency gaps

Severity: Medium Signal: Cross-node state lag causes inconsistent deny/allow behavior. Mitigation: deterministic fallback policies and fault-injection tests.

Risk 3: HTTP/3 operational variance

Severity: Medium Signal: Increased tail latency under migration/loss scenarios. Mitigation: expanded transport soak and tuning profiles.

Adoption Scenarios

Scenario A: Security-hardening-first release lane

  • Prioritize route-level auth verification and sensitive logging elimination.
  • Block release if privileged route coverage is incomplete.

Scenario B: Protocol-reliability-first release lane

  • Prioritize HTTP/3/gRPC-web operational hardening and recovery behavior.
  • Promote only after soak and fault-injection pass criteria are met.

Scenario C: Extensibility-first release lane

  • Prioritize plugin/WASM governance controls and rollback semantics.
  • Promote only with signed-extension policy and runtime safety gates.
