Security Module - Future Enhancements

Scope

  • Reliability and assurance hardening for authentication, authorization, encryption, and audit controls.
  • Operational hardening for key-management, policy enforcement, and threat-detection surfaces.
  • Performance and resilience hardening for security-critical runtime paths.

Design Constraints

  • Security-critical paths must fail closed on invalid state and dependency failures (Target: ongoing)
  • Policy enforcement must remain deny-by-default with deterministic evaluation behavior (Target: ongoing)
  • Key lifecycle operations must remain auditable and replay-safe across provider boundaries (Target: Q4 2026)
  • Security event trails must remain tamper-evident and operationally queryable (Target: Q4 2026)
  • Public security APIs remain additive-only in active major versions (Target: ongoing)

Implementation Notes

Access and Policy Hardening

Priority: High Target: Q3-Q4 2026

  • Expand regression coverage for auth/session/revocation edge cases.
  • Harden RBAC/ABAC/RLS policy merge and deny-default consistency.
  • Improve diagnostics for policy deny decisions without leaking sensitive internals.

Crypto and Key Management Hardening

Priority: High Target: Q4 2026

  • Tighten key-provider fallback behavior under dependency degradation.
  • Expand lifecycle guardrails for key generation/rotation/revocation.
  • Strengthen runtime enforcement for secure defaults and error handling.

Detection and Audit Hardening

Priority: Medium Target: Q4 2026

  • Improve detection signal quality and abuse-pattern coverage.
  • Validate tamper-evidence and high-volume audit pipelines.
  • Expand operational triage metadata for incident response.

Performance and Resilience Hardening

Priority: Medium Target: Q1 2027

  • Re-baseline hot-path latency and throughput in security-critical controls.
  • Keep operational overhead bounded for policy, audit, and crypto flows.
  • Expand benchmark-backed guardrails for release promotion.

Test Strategy

  • Focused auth/policy/crypto regression suites.
  • Failure-injection matrix for external dependency outages (key providers, signing backends, policy sources).
  • Detection-path regression and false-positive/false-negative tracking.
  • Performance regressions for security hot paths and audit throughput.

Performance Targets

  • Maintain stable latency envelopes for security hot paths under representative load.
  • Keep throughput regressions inside release budget thresholds.
  • Keep audit and policy enforcement overhead bounded under peak traffic.

Security / Reliability

  • Fail closed on invalid security state or missing critical dependencies.
  • Preserve deterministic deny-default policy behavior.
  • Prevent unbounded growth in security queues, caches, and audit buffers.

Risk Backlog

Risk 1: Policy divergence under complex rule sets

Severity: High Signal: inconsistent allow/deny outcomes across policy paths. Mitigation: deterministic precedence checks, regression packs, and explainability tooling.

Risk 2: Key-provider degradation during rotation windows

Severity: Medium Signal: elevated key fetch/rotation failures or delayed rekeying. Mitigation: bounded retry/failover behavior and stronger lifecycle telemetry.

Risk 3: Detection quality drift over time

Severity: Medium Signal: increased false positives/negatives in auth/injection abuse signals. Mitigation: calibration pipelines and scenario-based regression validation.

Adoption Scenarios

Scenario A: Assurance-first lane

  • Prioritize fail-closed behavior, policy consistency, and key-management safety.
  • Promote only after full security regression and failure-matrix gate pass.

Scenario B: Operations-first lane

  • Prioritize audit/evidence reliability and diagnosability under production load.
  • Promote only after observability and retention gate pass.

Scenario C: Performance-first lane

  • Prioritize bounded-overhead improvements for security hot paths with parity checks.
  • Promote only after benchmark and correctness gate pass.
