Network Module - Future Enhancements

Scope

  • Reliability and safety hardening for transport/protocol entry points.
  • Operational hardening for routing, session lifecycle, and multi-transport observability.
  • Performance and resilience hardening across TCP/WS/UDP/QUIC/gRPC paths.

Design Constraints

  • Protocol parsing and session handling must fail closed on invalid frames and state transitions (Target: ongoing)
  • Authentication and rate-limit guards must remain deterministic under adversarial traffic (Target: ongoing)
  • Multi-transport behavior must remain bounded in memory, queue depth, and timeout handling (Target: Q4 2026)
  • Routing/failover decisions must remain auditable and diagnosable (Target: Q4 2026)
  • Public network APIs/protocol surfaces remain additive-only in active major versions (Target: ongoing)

Required Interfaces

Interface Consumer Notes
WireProtocolServer / wire protocol handlers server/runtime clients core TCP protocol handling
WireProtocolWebSocketSession browser/realtime clients WS upgrade and frame dispatch
UDPFastPath / UDPServer low-latency read and ingest paths datagram-path behavior
QuicTransport / HTTP3 path modern transport clients QUIC/TLS transport behavior
GrpcTransport service clients RPC transport behavior
routing/topology/load-balancing components distributed runtime health/latency-aware routing

Implementation Notes

Protocol and Session Hardening

Priority: High Target: Q3-Q4 2026

  • Expand malformed-frame and invalid-state regression coverage.
  • Tighten auth/session/rate-limit guard consistency across opcode handlers.
  • Improve fail-closed behavior and error-path observability.

Multi-Transport Hardening

Priority: High Target: Q4 2026

  • Validate consistency and resilience across TCP/WS/UDP/QUIC/gRPC under partial failures.
  • Strengthen timeout/retry/backpressure interplay in mixed transport deployments.
  • Expand integration regression matrix for transport edge combinations.

Routing and Operational Hardening

Priority: Medium Target: Q4 2026

  • Improve route/failover determinism under changing topology and health signals.
  • Expand operator diagnostics for high-churn scenarios.
  • Harden load-distribution behavior under degraded backends.

Performance and Capacity Hardening

Priority: Medium Target: Q1 2027

  • Re-baseline throughput and tail-latency envelopes for representative transport mixes.
  • Keep compression/batching/zero-copy paths within bounded overhead budgets.
  • Expand benchmark-backed release guardrails.

Test Strategy

  • Focused protocol/auth/rate-limit regressions.
  • Multi-transport integration and fault-injection matrix.
  • Routing/failover deterministic behavior regressions.
  • Performance regressions for throughput, latency, and resource bounds.

Performance Targets

  • Maintain stable tail-latency envelopes under representative mixed transport workloads.
  • Keep transport throughput regressions inside release budget thresholds.
  • Keep memory and queue overhead bounded under peak concurrency.

Security / Reliability

  • Fail closed on invalid protocol state and unsafe session preconditions.
  • Preserve deterministic auth and rate-limit behavior.
  • Prevent unbounded growth in connection/session/queue structures.

Risk Backlog

Risk 1: Multi-transport divergence under fault conditions

Severity: High Signal: inconsistent behavior between protocol entry paths during degradation. Mitigation: shared invariants, cross-transport regression packs, and fault-matrix validation.

Risk 2: Session/state exhaustion under adversarial traffic

Severity: Medium Signal: rising rejected/timeout/error patterns with queue pressure. Mitigation: bounded state structures, stricter guardrails, and improved telemetry.

Risk 3: Routing instability under topology churn

Severity: Medium Signal: oscillating route decisions and latency spikes. Mitigation: stronger stabilization logic and deterministic fallback rules.

Adoption Scenarios

Scenario A: Safety-first lane

  • Prioritize protocol correctness, auth/rate-limit invariants, and fail-closed behavior.
  • Promote only after full protocol-security regression gate pass.

Scenario B: Operations-first lane

  • Prioritize route/failover diagnosability and transport reliability under production load.
  • Promote only after observability and resilience gate pass.

Scenario C: Performance-first lane

  • Prioritize bounded-overhead optimizations with correctness parity checks.
  • Promote only after benchmark and regression gate pass.
