Measured with fresh agents (Sonnet) building decks through the MCP server with nothing but the
server's own instructions to go on, then changing them. The first deck (ten slides, three drawn
diagrams, animations, sections, a table, notes, PDF): before, 61 to 82 calls and 1 to 9 errors per
build, one misleading message alone costing about nine calls; after, 45 calls and no errors in the
app. A longer deck (fourteen slides, adding SmartArt, two chart slides, pictures, a glossary from
Markdown, hyperlinks, a hidden slide, comments, a pptx round trip) then a ten-request change pass
in the app: 73 and 96 calls with no error answers, where the remaining cost was verification after
answers of null. With the last commits, the same two prompts took 66 and 89 calls, with the
verification calls going to the richer answers instead of renders. The JSON answers of commands
stay structured; "answers in words" and "fail a whole id list" from #298 are not taken up.

Changes

  • A key a command doesn't take is refused, not dropped. shape.insert {"shape": "roundRect"}
used to draw a plain rectangle and answer ok. Session::execute now checks the keys against the
command's params doc before anything runs:
    `shape.insert` was given `shape`, which it doesn't take. `shape.insert` takes {preset: …, rect: …}.
The params doc is the contract, so docs that missed a key their command reads are completed
    (shape.insert adj/flip, insert.table data, insert.chart title, format.paragraph
    indentRight/special/specialBy/lineSpacingPt, guide.add defaults, animation.set
start/duration/delay, shape.fill pictureProps), id is accepted wherever ids? is (the shared
targets helper reads either), three tests that passed a key never read drop it, and the soak
keeps its hostile values on keys the command reads. An explicit ids: [] is refused instead of
    quietly acting on the selection.
  • Other silent successes become refusals. section.add {at} past the end used to attach the
section to the last slide; table.style accepted any name and answered 1; chart.options {palette: [colours]} was accepted and ignored; transition.applyAll run from a slide with no
transition cleared every slide (clear: true now does that on purpose, and the answer names
    the source and kind); file.export {layout: "notes", perPage: 3} ignored perPage;
smartArt.* given the id of some other shape said only "select a SmartArt graphic". Each is
refused naming the valid range, ids or names (for SmartArt: what the id is and which shape on
the slide is the graphic), and the docs say what the parameter takes.
  • Shape ids work from any slide. Ids are unique in the presentation, so a shape or text
command given an id on another slide edits it there, makes that slide current (the window
    follows) and answers {"changed": 1, "onSlides": [4], "currentSlide": 4}; edit.select does the
same. Read-only lookups (text.get, shape.sites) move nothing. Commands that need several
shapes on one slide (shape.connect, arrange.*) say where the shape is and the slide.go that
gets there. Before, shape.connect answered "both shapes need connection sites" for this case
and edit.select answered ok while selecting nothing.
  • Formatting after table.selectCells acts on those cells. format.color, bold, align…
used to format the whole table (an agent colouring its header white got a white-on-white body).
A table selected as a shape still formats every cell. format.* on shapes answers how many
    changed instead of null.
  • A styled box in one command. shape.insert takes fill, line, size, color, bold
and name (one undo step), where a diagram box took six commands.
  • Tool names and references inside batch. add_shape, add_text_box, go_to_slide… run
as the tool inside batch and run_command, and a command id given as a tool name is told to
use run_command. A batch item can carry as: "a", and any "$a" in a later item's params
becomes that item's id, so insert, connect and animate are one batch; a $name with no such
item is refused, and so is an as name a reference could not spell (a hyphen, a space).
  • Answers that save the follow-up call. slide.new/add_slide answer placeholders: {title, body, …} (both agents had guessed "slide id + 1"); slide.duplicate answers the new index, its
placeholders and shape ids; slide.move the index and id; slide.fromOutline the indices and
ids of the slides it made, and makes the last one current so the next add_slide lands after
them; insert.table, insert.chart and insert.picture answer their rect; the table row and
    column inserts answer the table's rect, rows, cols and whether it now overflows the slide;
animation.add answers the indices it added; section.add the section list; design.theme
the new palette; design.palette the active theme's twelve colours as hex, the resolved text
    and background colours and the fonts; comment.reply/resolve the thread's state;
    comment.list {all: true} every slide's comments; comment.add its slide; edit.undo/redo
the label and the slide; animation.add the click steps of what it added; review.spelling
    whether a dictionary was used (an empty list used to mean either "clean" or "no dictionary");
transition.applyAll the slide count; export {all: true} the slide index of each file (the
files are numbered from 1, the displayed number, which the docs now say); inspect_slide
leaves out an empty notesBody; list_commands reports actsOn. slide.duplicate names
placeholders by their kind (a copy carrying a footer used to answer it as body), and
    shape.connect {id, preset} changes a connector's kind as it re-glues it (the preset was
    ignored with id).
  • Header, footer, slide number and date are set once. design.headerFooter used to apply to
the slides that existed at the time; slides added later now inherit the setting, and the answer
says so. Saving and exporting create a missing folder instead of failing with the OS error.
  • Errors name the slide they looked at. animation.remove, animation.move and the other
index-taking animation edits answer "no animation at index 2: slide index 1 has no animations"
(or how many it has) instead of "no such animation", since the current slide is often not the
    one the agent meant.
  • What a render used to be for. inspect_slide reports textOverflows and textHeight for
a box whose text needs more height than it has, a table's drawn height (rows grow with their
text), and no null fields; animation.get numbers each animation's click step, and
animation.add's doc says that several ids in one call form one click step.
  • Less to read per call, same number of calls. inspect_slide summarises animations as
    {count, clickSteps} unless asked for the list (animation.get has it). screenshot {path}
    writes the PNG and answers the path, so a client that cannot read image content can view it;
the instructions say the same for render_slide versus export. (A families answer for a
bare list_commands was tried and dropped: it saved bytes but cost one lookup per need.)
  • Discovery. The server instructions carry the diagram recipe (styled box, connector with a
box's site numbers, animation click steps, notes, transition, section, table with
set_text {cell}, palette, export, headerFooter once early), so the common path needs no
    list_commands.
  • An unknown id names the commands like it; "not available" says how to make the command
    available
, naming only the parameters it takes.
  • deckcraft-cli run reads every --cmd before any runs, says how it read one it can't parse
and the form that works, and numbers a failing --cmd.
  • insert_table and insert_picture hand the engine a rect instead of x, y, w, h (the refusal
found that the four keys never did anything); set_text takes a table cell.
  • Docs: connector sites and head/tail ends, transition.applyAll copies kind, duration and
options, animation.move renumbers click steps, key nudges 6 pt (alt: 1 pt), pointer uses
slide points, comment.list {} is the current slide, the instructions, docs/mcp.md and the
    run help page.

Round two (from the last two runs)

  • Read-only lookups find a shape on any slide. shape.inspect and text.get given an id
on another slide answered "no shape 404" although the edits already find an id anywhere. They
now find it, move nothing, and answer slide (the index it is on). The server instructions
list the commands that still need the current slide (shape.connect, arrange.*,
smartArt.*; comment.* acts on the current slide).
  • inspect_slide shows what a render used to be for. Per shape, only when present:
textColor (the first run's colour, as the theme slot name such as tx1 or as hex), line: {color, width}, a connector's from and to {id, site}, and links: [{text, url|slide}].
An agent that had changed the theme spent about eight renders finding invisible text and
guessing which connector was which; a plain slide's answer grows by about 90 bytes.
  • index and slide are both accepted on inspect_slide, export and render_slide
(they used to disagree, and agents hit a refusal switching between them); both given with
    different values is refused.
  • One call instead of twenty-two. animation.timing and animation.options take
all: true or indices: […] and answer {changed}; an index past the end is refused before
    anything changes.
  • key nudges and pointer drags answer the moved boxes (selected: [{id, rect}]), so the
follow-up inspect goes away; edit.selection {} answers the selection with its boxes, and the
app's ui.key/ui.pointer answers carry it (an older app gets one internal follow-up).
  • An ids entry that is not an id is refused naming it. edit.select {ids: ["$sl.placeholders.title"]} used to answer {selected: []} and succeed; now the entry is
named in the refusal (a $name reference stops at the dot, which the message makes clear).
  • insert.smartArt takes rect and answers the final box, instead of landing a small
    graphic mid-slide that needed shape.setBounds.
  • text.replace takes scope (body, titles, notes, all), so "replace X in body
text" no longer touches titles, footers and notes; the answer says how many replacements on
    which slides.
  • From the review: a locked shape on another slide is refused like one on the current slide
    (the lock check used the current-slide lookup after edits started finding ids anywhere);
slide.new no longer takes ids for footer placeholders it does not add; an all-invalid ids
list is told apart from an empty one; a batch item that answers an image (render_slide) is
    refused and told to run on its own; insert_picture/insert_table refuse a partial x, y, w, h;
screenshot is marked as writing; the CLI reads every --cmd before opening the file, and
its help says a failing --cmd skips the pending --save/--export without undoing earlier
    writes.

Breaking for callers

A parameter key a command doesn't document is now an error, and so are an explicit empty ids,
a section.add index past the end, an unknown table style, a colour list for a chart palette,
perPage outside the handouts layout and transition.applyAll from a slide with no transition.
A shape command with an id on another slide now succeeds and moves the current slide where it
used to fail. Two answers change shape: section.add answers sections as a list (the count is
count), and the table row/column inserts answer an object (the old count is changed);
review.spelling answers an object {dictionary, lang, issues} instead of the bare list; a
Title layout's placeholders no longer repeats the subtitle id under body; an ids entry
that is not a whole number is an error where it used to be dropped; the other answer changes
only add fields. Every UI, MCP and CLI call site passes the suites.

Tests

Engine: unknown keys refused for every command (a sweep over all of them), the aliases and the
completed docs still accepted, suggestions, enable hints, cross-slide edits and edit.select,
the styled insert (and its single undo step), placeholder ids, empty ids, formatting after a
cell selection, a multi-selection answering its count, the refusals (section index, table style,
chart palette), each richer answer, header/footer inheritance, comment.list {all}, animation
errors naming the slide, the animation summary in slide.inspect, the palette on a light and a
dark theme. MCP: tool names and as/$name references in a batch, insert_table placement,
set_text with a cell, actsOn, the recipe and the image note in the instructions, the
inspect_slide summary, screenshot {path} (headless refusal and the app call), the
command-as-tool hint, index/slide on all three tools, key and pointer answering the
boxes, the read-only hints, the image refusal in a batch, the partial-rect refusal. Round two
in the engine: lookups across slides, all/indices on the animation edits, the nudge answer,
the ids entry refusal, insert.smartArt {rect}, text.replace {scope}, the new
inspect_slide fields, the lock check across slides, the id allocation of slide.new. CLI: a
--cmd that doesn't parse runs nothing and is reported before the file is opened; a failing
--cmd is numbered. cargo fmt --check,
clippy -D warnings (engine, mcp, ui-egui, cli), the engine, mcp, cli and ui-egui suites,
cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets pass.

How it was tested

Each change came from a run, not a guess: a fresh agent (Sonnet) with nothing but the server's
initialize instructions, tools/list and list_commands, no access to the docs or the engine
source, building a deck through a bridge that logs every call. The log gives calls, error
answers, repeated calls, wall time and bytes read; the agent's report lists what it had to do
twice, could not do, or misread. Every finding went into a table with a verdict, the fixes landed
with a failing test first, and the same prompts were run again on the new build. Calls are the
primary cost (one call is four to eight seconds of model time); a change that saved bytes but
added lookups (a families listing for a bare list_commands) was measured and reverted. The
diagram PNGs were checked by eye after each run.

Build prompt (the agent gets this text; `` is an output folder)

Build me a deck about this repo (DeckCraft) for new contributors, about 14 slides, and make
it a deck I could actually present. Use a light theme (the first showing is in a bright room), number the slides and
put "DeckCraft · contributor tour" in the footer. Organise it in sections.

  1. Title slide with the project name, a one-line tagline and the repo's logo from
docs/brand (the white one if the background is dark).
  2. "What DeckCraft is": a short bullet list with two levels of indentation.
  3. Layered architecture as a drawn diagram (shapes and connectors), one row per layer with
the crates in it, colour-coded by layer using the theme's accent colours.
  4. Crate dependency graph drawn with boxes and glued arrows, direct dependencies only.
  5. "A command's journey" as an activity diagram (UI, CLI, MCP → engine → model → renderer →
output, with a decision diamond), built up click by click with entrance animations, and an
emphasis animation on the engine box at the end.
  6. The contribution workflow (read AGENTS.md → branch → change with tests → cargo xtask ci →
PR → review) as a SmartArt process graphic.
  7. A bar chart of lines of Rust code per layer (count them), and a pie chart of the number
of crates per layer, side by side, with a data label on each bar.
  8. A line chart of commits per month over the last twelve months (from git log).
  9. Files in and out: a table (format, crate, in, out) with the header row merged into a
single title cell above it, styled to be readable on this theme.
  10. Quality gates: what cargo xtask ci runs, one gate per step with a short description,
and a transition different from the rest of the deck.
  11. Two screenshots of the app from docs/images, cropped to the editor area, side by side
    with captions.
  12. A glossary built from this markdown outline (make it two slides if it gets long):
    "# Glossary\n- Session: …\n- Command: …\n- Placeholder: …\n- Layout, Master: …\n- Theme: …"
(write the definitions yourself from docs/architecture.md).
  13. "Where to start": bullets that link to the architecture slide, the command slide and
    the quality slide.
  14. A hidden appendix slide listing every crate with one line each, for the PDF only.
Speaker notes on every diagram, chart and picture slide. Add a reviewer comment on the
crate graph saying which edges you left out and why.
Run the spell check and fix what it flags.
Replace every "DeckCraft" in body text with "DeckCraft 0.8" except on the title slide.
When done: save as /tour.deckcraft, also save as /tour.pptx, export the PDF as
handouts with notes (3 per page) to /tour-handouts.pdf, the outline as Markdown to
/tour.md, an animated GIF of the deck to /tour.gif, and PNGs of slides 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 11 to /. Then reopen tour.pptx and tell me whether all 14 slides, the sections and the notes survived the round trip. Look at every diagram and chart PNG yourself before you call it done and fix what overlaps or is unreadable.
Change prompt, run on the saved deck in the app

Open

/tour.deckcraft. Then:

  1. Move "Where to start" to right after the title slide and duplicate the quality slide as a
"Quality at a glance" summary with half the text.
  2. On the crate graph, rename the engine box to "engine (L5)", give it a different fill, and
add one missing edge with a bent connector.
  3. Change the commits chart to a column chart and add this month's number.
  4. In the files table, add a "Tests" column, delete the PDF row, and centre the header.
  5. Make the flow diagram's first click reveal two boxes, speed every animation up to 300 ms,
and apply the title slide's transition to all slides.
  6. Change the theme to a dark one (the deck is presented in dark rooms from now on); check
every diagram, chart and table is still readable and fix what
    isn't using the new palette.
  7. On every drawn diagram, make sure the connectors do not cross each other or run through
boxes unless there is no other way; move boxes or re-route arrows (other sites, a bent
    connector) where they do.
  8. Resolve the reviewer comment on the crate graph and add a reply first.
  9. Undo the last change, then redo it.
  10. Nudge the logo on the title slide 20 pt to the right with the keyboard, then drag the
tagline down a little with the pointer, and take a screenshot of the window.
  11. Save, re-export the PDF and the GIF, and export PNGs of every slide you changed.

Same prompt, same model, before and after the changes (calls are bridge calls to the server;
error answers are calls the server refused):

Prompt Calls, before → after Error answers, before → after Wall time, before → after
Ten-slide deck (first half of the commits) 61 to 82 → 45 1 to 9 → 0 7 to 16 min → 5 min
Fourteen-slide deck (second half) 73 → 66 0 → 1 8.5 min → 7 min
Change pass on that deck (second half; one more request after) 96 → 89 0 → 2 6 min → 6 min

The remaining error answers were the agent's own slips that the server now names (a batch
name with a hyphen, a wrong SmartArt id); the calls saved were inspects and renders after
answers that used to say null.

Two issues from the same theme: format.font takes eastAsia and complexScript (#786; the key
check had started to refuse eastAsia outright), and master.insertPlaceholder refuses an
unknown kind instead of quietly inserting a content placeholder (#300, item 4).

Closes #786. Part of #298: with #990 it covers every bullet there except the worded success
answers and the whole-list failure (both deliberately not taken up) and the run summary line
(dropped: a CLI is silent on success); round two also makes the read-only lookups find a shape on
any slide and answer its slide, and refuses an ids or indices entry that is not an id instead
of dropping it. Related: #300 (item 4 done; item 5 partly: the footer and
slide number set with design.headerFooter now reach slides added later; items 1 to 3, the
placeholder shapes of item 5, and 6 to 8 remain). Side notes: #235 and #236 are fixed on main
and could be closed; #891 (design.background {all: true} not reaching slides added later) is
the twin of the headerFooter change and is not touched here. Merged with main as of today.
#990 is still open and touches the same places; merging it after this expects conflicts in
crates/engine/src/tests.rs (both append tests), crates/engine/src/cmd/animation.rs (both
reword the same errors; keep this branch's slide-naming message with #990's range helper) and
the server instructions (both add a sentence; keep both). Engine and render fixes the same runs
found (connector default sites, formatting set before the text, chart text colour, table text on
dark themes) are separate PRs.

Walkthrough

This pull request updates presentation commands, cross-slide shape targeting, CLI command parsing, and MCP tool behavior. It also changes export and inspection responses, adds validation, and updates related UI behavior, tests, and documentation.

Changes: DeckCraft command and tooling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Command validation and cross-slide targeting
crates/engine/src/cmd/{mod,arrange,points,edit,selection,shape}.rs, crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/{tests,soak_tests}.rs
Command parameters and ID lists receive stricter validation and more specific errors. Shape lookup and edits can resolve IDs across slides and update the selection.
Text, shape, and insertion operations
crates/engine/src/cmd/{find,format,insert,smartart,text,shape}.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Text replacement gains scope filters. Formatting and insertion commands accept additional inputs and return more details. Table-cell formatting can target selected cells.
Inspection and animation results
crates/engine/src/cmd/{inspect,animation}.rs, crates/engine/src/keys.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Inspection responses include additional shape and slide data. Animation commands support explicit targets and report click steps and position-specific errors.
Presentation, design, and review commands
crates/engine/src/cmd/{design,slide,review,table,transition,zoom}.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/{background_tests,spelling_tests}.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs
Commands for themes, slides, sections, comments, spelling, tables, and transitions add validation or response fields.
Export and file handling
crates/engine/src/{cmd/file.rs,io.rs}, crates/ui-egui/src/{backstage.rs,backstage_tests.rs,dialogs.rs}
Exports return slide indices, PDF parameters are limited by layout, and file writes create missing parent directories.
MCP tools, batch execution, and control responses
crates/mcp/src/{tools,server,headless,tests}.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/control.rs, docs/{mcp.md,control-protocol.md}
MCP adds tool dispatch, batch references, stricter argument handling, screenshot paths, and selected-shape boxes in control responses. Tool guidance and tests cover these behaviors.
CLI parsing and execution
apps/deckcraft-cli/src/{help,main}.rs, apps/deckcraft-cli/tests/it/cli.rs
The CLI parses all --cmd values before opening a presentation. Parse and execution errors identify a command’s position. Help text describes cross-slide IDs and failure behavior.

Possibly related issues

  • #1186: The PR expands MCP and CLI operating guidance, though the requested OpenCode skill remains a separate follow-up.
  • #198: The PR adds East Asian and complex-script font controls, addressing part of the issue’s broader non-Latin font-support objectives.

Suggested reviewers: echelon, nikitkara

Merge Risk: Low · up to 1fcb6

A null ids value sent while a text range is selected formats the whole shape instead of the selected text. The control-protocol documentation also still lists conflicting stale rows. Both are small, bounded problems to fix before or shortly after merge.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 1fcb6

Commands can now affect more slides within a presentation, while the inspected paths preserve object-lock checks, configured filesystem restrictions, and document-edit rollback. No new security bypass was established. Incomplete coverage prevents a minimal-risk assessment.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A caller controlling command IDs and parameters can now directly target shapes on non-current slides through the shared editing helper. The demonstrated expansion is within the active presentation; current-slide selection should not be interpreted as an isolation boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Configured automation roots separate read and write authority and compare resolved paths against root components. The new parent-directory creation runs after the write check. Without configured roots, filesystem operations retain the existing process-level authority model.
  • observed — Filesystem confinement is a check-then-open control, not protection against another local process swapping directory links concurrently. This limitation is documented in the unchanged confinement implementation and is not established as introduced or materially worsened by this PR.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The native write sink retains exclusive temporary-file creation, synchronization, rename-based replacement, and temporary-file cleanup on reported write or rename failure. These controls preserve per-write failure containment but do not provide a transaction across multiple commands.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

For directly linked issue #786, format.font documents optional eastAsia and complexScript parameters beside required family. The implementation sets font_ea and font_cs when supplied. A call with only family continues to update Latin text and leaves the script-specific families unchanged. The PR summary reports regression coverage for these behaviors.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reported changes remain within the PR scope: command validation and errors, cross-slide access, formatting, batch execution, richer answers, CLI and MCP behavior, inspection, documentation, and tests. The format.font change directly implements #786. The description identifies excluded work, including worded success answers and unrelated placeholder and background changes. No unrelated change is demonstrated by the reviewed summary or focused diff.

- Line 96: Update the `run` help text to clarify that a `--cmd` failure skips
pending `--save` and `--export` steps but does not undo files already written by
earlier commands.

Review comments at @apps/deckcraft-cli/src/main.rs:
- Line 493: Move the command-parsing loop over cmds before Session::new() and
open() so malformed --cmd JSON returns its position-aware parse error before the
presentation is opened or any engine command runs.

Review comments at @crates/engine/src/cmd/design.rs:
- Around line 897-914: Update apply_header_footer to allocate IDs only for
placeholders that will actually be added: enabled by want, absent from the
slide, and available on the layout. Allocate each needed ID before borrowing the
slide mutably, then use that ID when adding the placeholder.

Review comments at @crates/engine/src/cmd/mod.rs:
- Around line 604-615: Update the lock filters in edit_geometry and
size_position to use the presentation-wide shape_anywhere lookup instead of
context-local st.shape, and exclude IDs whose matching shape is locked
regardless of which slide contains it.
- Around line 494-499: Update `targets` to distinguish an actually empty raw
`ids` array from a nonempty array whose entries yield no valid shape IDs, and
return `bad` with the supplied command ID in both cases. Add a `cmd` parameter
to `targets` and pass each invoking command’s ID through its callers; keep the
existing empty-list message and report the raw invalid `ids` value for nonempty
invalid lists.

Review comments at @crates/mcp/src/tools.rs:
- Around line 367-368: Update run_either to preserve image content blocks
returned by call_tool for image-producing batch items, rather than collecting
only text and returning success without the image. Alternatively, reject such
items with guidance to call the image-producing tool separately.
- Line 304: Set the path-capable screenshot tool’s readOnlyHint value to false,
since call_tool can pass path to ui.screenshot and write a PNG.
- Around line 375-388: Update with_rect to reject placement arguments unless x,
y, w, and h are all present as finite numbers, returning an error before
removing them; keep the existing default-placement behavior when none are
supplied. Update the insert_picture and insert_table dispatch paths to propagate
that error before calling exec.

Consolidate the duplicate UI method rows.

docs/control-protocol.md defines ui.pointer and ui.key / ui.text multiple times with different kind lists and behavior details. The duplicate rows can give consumers contradictory documentation. Keep one row per method, merge pressure? and the canvas-preview Escape behavior into the updated rows, and remove the stale rows. Apply the same consolidation to the duplicated ui.inspect row.

Suggested documentation fix

The params doc separated the keys with semicolons, which the parser reads as

… satisfies both PRs' tests

The cherry-picks onto the rebased base left eight engine tests twice with differing bodies; the
old bundle's final body is kept. no_animation now carries the 0-based range the way no_slide does
(storytold#990) while still naming the slide it looked at (storytold#1006).

…rameter keys, an unknown command id, a disabled command, and a --cmd the CLI can't read (storytold#298)

An agent learns from the answer it gets back, and these answers hid a failure or said too little.
The JSON answers of commands are unchanged: structured answers suit agents and the UI better than
prose, so the "answer in words" part of storytold#298 is not taken up.

- A parameter a command doesn't take was dropped, so `shape.insert {"shape": "roundRect"}` drew a
plain rectangle and answered ok. Session::execute now refuses it before anything runs:
  "`shape.insert` was given `shape`, which it doesn't take. `shape.insert` takes {preset: …,
rect: …}". The params doc is the contract; `id` is accepted wherever `ids?` is, because `targets`
reads either. Docs that missed a key their command reads are completed (shape.insert adj/flip,
  insert.table data, insert.chart title, format.paragraph indentRight/special/specialBy/
  lineSpacingPt, guide.add defaults, animation.set start/duration/delay, shape.fill pictureProps),
and three tests that passed a key never read drop it. The soak keeps its hostile values on keys
  the command reads.
- An unknown id names the commands like it: "unknown command `new`; commands named like it:
  file.new, slide.new".
- "Not available" says how to make the command available, naming only the parameters it takes:
"nothing selected: edit.select {"ids": [id, …]} selects shapes, or pass `ids` to act on those
  shapes"; "no presentation open: file.new {} or file.open {"path": …} opens one".
- deckcraft-cli run reads every --cmd before any runs, so a malformed one leaves nothing half done,
and says how it was read and the form that works: "--cmd 2 of 2 was read as command `new` with
parameters `file.new={"blank":true}`: the parameters are not JSON (…). --cmd takes
COMMAND=PARAMS … Nothing ran." A failing --cmd is numbered.

Part of storytold#298.

…ide batch, a styled shape.insert, slide.new answers its placeholders, insert_table hands the engine a rect

Measured with two fresh agents building a ten-slide deck with three drawn diagrams through the MCP
server: 61 and 79 calls, 9 and 3 errors, one misleading message costing about nine calls.

- Shape ids are unique in the presentation, so a shape or text command given an id on another
slide edits it there, makes that slide current (the window follows) and answers
  {"changed": 1, "onSlides": [4], "currentSlide": 4}; text.get and shape.sites read it without
moving. Commands that need several shapes on one slide (shape.connect, arrange.reorder,
shape.points) say where the shape is and the slide.go that gets there, where shape.connect used
to answer "both shapes need connection sites" for an id on another slide.
- run_command and batch accept a tool name (add_shape, add_text_box, go_to_slide…) with the
tool's arguments as params, so a styled box sits in a batch beside commands.
- shape.insert takes fill, line, size, color, bold and name: a diagram box in one command and one
undo step instead of six commands.
- slide.new (and add_slide) answer placeholders: {title, body, …} ids; both agents had guessed
  "slide id + 1".
- insert_table and insert_picture turn x, y, w, h into rect and drop the four keys, which the
unknown-key refusal had started to reject; before that they were silently ignored.
- The "no presentation open" answer names new_presentation and open_presentation over MCP.
- Docs: connector sites (a box has 0 top, 1 left, 2 bottom, 3 right), head/tail ends,
transition.applyAll copies the current slide, the server instructions, docs/mcp.md and the run
help page; CLI tests follow the new texts.

…s stop hard-coding hex

A query: {theme, colors: {dk1…accent6, hlink, folHlink}, text, background,
fonts: {major, minor}}. text/background are tx1/bg1 resolved through the
colour map in force on the current slide, so a dark theme reports a dark
background and light text. docs/mcp.md points agents at it.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…list_commands says what a command acts on, slide.new names one placeholder per role

From the second round of agent runs (a change-request pass in the app and a rebuild headless):

- edit.select {ids} with an id on another slide answered {"selected": [id]} and selected nothing,
so the next format.* was "not available". It now follows the id like the shape commands (the
slide becomes current, the answer carries currentSlide), refuses an id that is nowhere with the
located message, and refuses ids spread over two slides instead of half-selecting.
- The set_text tool takes `cell` [row, col], so a table cell is one call instead of text.edit,
  type_text and Escape.
- list_commands reports `actsOn` ("Acts on the shapes in `ids`, else on the selected ones"),
cached per command, so a command listed as "disabled: nothing selected" also says it takes ids.
- slide.new's placeholders answer one key per role (title, subtitle, body, then other kinds by
name) instead of the same shape under both body and obj.

…ief command listings, a hint for a command id used as a tool name; an empty `ids` is refused; richer answers from animation.add, section.add and slide.inspect

From the final benchmark runs (a fresh agent building a ten-slide deck with three diagrams spent
12 to 31 of its calls on list_commands lookups):

- The server instructions carry the diagram recipe: shape.insert with its style keys, shape.connect
  with a box's site numbers, animation.add click steps, slide.notes, transition.set, section.add,
  insert.table with set_text {cell}, design.palette, add_slide's placeholders, export.
- list_commands {brief: true} answers id and params only; its description names the families.
- A command id given as a tool name answers "`design.palette` is a command, not a tool:
run_command {…}" instead of "unknown tool".
- An explicit `ids: []` is refused ("`ids` is empty: pass the shape ids, or leave `ids` out to act
on the selected shapes") where it used to act on the selection, which an agent fell into.
- animation.add answers the indices it added; section.add answers the section's index and name;
slide.inspect leaves out notesBody when the notes are empty.
- A guard test pins shape.connect's default sites: facing sites for shapes side by side or
  stacked.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…rts a table's drawn height and carries no nulls; animation.get numbers click steps; formatting set before the text survives it

- slide.inspect reports textOverflows and textHeight for a box whose text needs more height than
it has (no autofit), a table's drawn height (rows grow with their text), and drops every null
field; agents exported a PNG to learn each of these.
- animation.get numbers each animation's click step; animation.add's doc says that several ids in
one call form one click step (the first takes `start`, the rest withPrevious), which it already
  did.
- format.size, bold or color on a shape that has no text yet is kept on the paragraph's end mark
(a body with no paragraph gets one), and text.set keeps that, so a size set before the text
survives it; before, it vanished when the text landed.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…); master.insertPlaceholder refuses an unknown kind (storytold#300)

- format.font {family, eastAsia?, complexScript?}: with keys checked against the params doc,
`eastAsia` was refused outright where it used to be dropped; now it sets the face, and a
Latin-only call leaves the other faces alone.
- master.insertPlaceholder with a kind it doesn't know used to insert a content placeholder and
answer ok; it now answers "`kind` is one of content, text, picture, chart, table or media, not
  `footer`" and inserts nothing.

…martArt graphic

"select a SmartArt graphic" left an agent guessing why its id was refused.
The shared target check now says "id 367 is a placeholder, not a SmartArt
graphic (the SmartArt on this slide is 382)", naming the graphic only when
the slide has exactly one, and says when the id is not on the slide at all.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>
…noring it

`{layout: "notes", perPage: 3}` exported one slide per page and said nothing.
The shared PDF options now refuse `perPage` with notes or slides, naming the
layout it belongs to; the params doc and docs/mcp.md say notes and handouts
are separate layouts, as in PowerPoint's Print page. The Export dialog, the
Print page and the MCP export test pass `perPage` only for handouts.

…o longer hides a missing dictionary

`[]` meant both "no mistakes" and "no Hunspell dictionary, only the built-in
common-misspellings list ran". The answer is now an object; the list moved
under `issues`, and `dictionary` says whether one was used. The Spelling
dialog, its harness test and the engine tests read `issues`; doc and
docs/mcp.md updated.

`file.export` to a path in a folder that does not exist yet answered
"No such file or directory (os error 2)". The shared writer behind
file.save, file.saveAs and file.export now creates the folder (after the
access check, which already covers the whole path), so the three agree.
The export doc says `slide` is a 0-based index and that folders are created.

…f each animation

An agent adding comments and animations across slides could not tell from
the answers where they landed or which click shows them. `comment.add` adds
`slide`; `animation.add` adds `steps`, computed by the same helper
`animation.get` uses for `step`. Docs and docs/mcp.md updated.

…is declared

An agent wrote `as: "ui-egui"` and `"$ui-egui"` two items later; the reference stops at the
hyphen, so the text went on as a shape id and that item was refused, leaving the agent to find the
missing connector in a render. The name is now checked when declared (letters, digits and `_`, not
starting with a digit) and refused with the rule. Test.

…y has no `body`

`placeholders_json` (shared by slide.new and slide.duplicate) fell back
to `body_placeholder` for the `body` role, which picks any non-title
placeholder; on a copy that carries footer placeholders it was the
footer, so `body` and `ftr` answered the same id and a slide without a
body placeholder claimed one. The fallback now applies only when that
placeholder is a body/content kind; footer, slide number and date keep
their own names (`ftr`, `sldNum`, `dt`). slide.new was not affected in
practice because it answers before the footer is applied.

…y `id`

With `id`, `preset` was read only on the insert path and silently
ignored, so `shape.connect {id, from, to, preset: "bentConnector3"}`
kept the connector straight. The preset is now validated (it must be a
connector/line preset, else the call is refused) and set on the re-glued
shape; the doc says that `preset` with `id` changes the connector's kind
and lists the answer's fromSite/toSite.

…lide index

`file.export {all: true, path: "d.png"}` writes d1.png, d2.png… numbered
from 1 (the displayed slide number) while `slide` is a 0-based index, and
nothing said so. The params doc, the MCP `export` tool description and
its `all` argument now do, and the png/jpeg answer carries `indices` (the
0-based slide of each file) beside the unchanged `files`. `chart.data`'s
doc says it replaces the whole categories/series; `animation.timing`'s
says `index` is the animation's position in the slide's list as
animation.get numbers them and that animation.get reports click steps.
docs/mcp.md carries the same three notes.

…er its slide

Agents got "no shape" from shape.inspect for an id on another slide although
the edits find ids anywhere. shape.inspect now uses the same cross-slide
lookup as text.get and shape.sites, moves nothing, and shape.inspect and
text.get answer `slide` so the agent knows where the shape is. The server
instructions and docs/mcp.md list the commands that still need the current
slide (shape.connect, arrange.*, smartArt.*, comment.*).

…e slide

Agents switching between the tools hit refusals because one took `index` and
the others `slide`. The MCP layer now accepts both spellings on all three and
maps the alias to the key the engine takes; both given with different values
is refused. The schemas and docs/mcp.md say so.

…for several animations

Speeding up a whole slide cost one call per animation. The two commands that
act on one animation by `index` now also take `indices: [..]` or `all: true`
(every animation on the slide) and answer `{changed}`; an index past the end
is refused before anything changes, and an empty `indices` is refused.

Agents inspected the slide after every arrow-key nudge and drag to learn
where the shape landed. An arrow-key nudge now answers `selected: [{id,
rect}]`, and `ui.pointer` (app and headless) adds `selected` beside
`selection`. A new query `edit.selection {}` answers the same at any time;
the MCP `key` and `pointer` tools fall back to it with one internal call when
an app's answer lacks `selected`, so the agent still spends one call.

`edit.select {ids: ["$sl.placeholders.title"]}` answered `{selected: []}` ok
because ids_param dropped invalid entries. It now refuses the first entry
that is not an integer id (naming it), and every `ids` reader (edit.select,
selection.select, targets) shares the rule; a presence check no longer parses
the list.

The graphic landed small mid-slide with no way to place it. It now takes
`rect?: [x, y, w, h]` (a degenerate one falls back to the default area) and
answers `{id, rect}` as insert.table/chart/picture do.

…des it changed

Replacing a product name in body text hit titles, footers and notes. `body`
is the text in non-title placeholders, text boxes, shapes and tables,
`titles` the title placeholders, `notes` the notes bodies; the default is
still everything. The answer adds `slides`, the indices that changed.

…ets per shape

An agent could not see a shape's text colour, line colour/width, a
connector's ends or a hyperlink target without rendering (one run spent ~8
renders on this after a theme change). Each shape now carries, only when
present, `textColor` (the first run's resolved colour: a scheme colour as its
slot name, else hex), `line: {color, width}`, a connector's `from`/`to: {id,
site}` and `links: [{text, url|slide}]`. A plain title+body+box slide grows
from 689 to 780 bytes.

…osition

edit_shapes finds an id on any slide (storytold#298), but the lock filters in
edit_geometry and size_position still looked only on the current slide, so a
locked shape elsewhere counted as free and was moved, resized, rotated or
cropped. Both now use shape_anywhere, and size_position reads the box where
the shape is, so a cross-slide sizePosition also works for an unlocked shape.

… empty

ids_param drops entries that are no shape id, so {"ids": [-1]} or ["12"]
reached the "`ids` is empty" refusal. The empty check now looks at the raw
array, and a non-empty list left with no valid id is refused quoting the list.

It took three ids on every call, so each slide.new consumed three of the id
space even with footer, date and slide number off, or already present, or
missing from the layout. The additions are planned first and an id taken for
each; nothing is bumped when nothing is added.

The default soak length goes from 400 to 1000 steps a seed: seed 0xDEC0_C2AF
sat exactly on the 10% edit floor at 400, and one design.headerFooter step
that only bumped next_id decided it. At 1000 every seed edits 13% or more.

…opping it

with_rect built `rect` only when all four were given, but removed the keys
either way, so x and y without w and h placed the shape at the default
position in silence. Some of the four, or one that is not a finite number, is
now refused naming the rule; none keeps the default placement.

…mage

run_either kept only the text blocks of a tool's answer, so a render_slide
item reported ok with its metadata and no image. A tool answer with an image
block is now refused with "call render_slide on its own"; the batch answer
stays one JSON array.

The parse loop came after Session::new() and open(), so an --in that could
not be opened was reported ahead of a malformed --cmd, and file.open or
file.new ran before the commands were known to parse. The loop now runs first.

The tool was annotated read-only although it writes a file when given a path,
like export, which is marked false. A test pins the hints of the writing and
answering tools.

…not undo earlier writes

"saves nothing" overstated it: a file.saveAs or file.export run as an earlier
--cmd has already written its file. The help now says what is skipped and
what is not undone, and that commands are read before the file is opened.

…e refused or treated as absent, never dropped

`animation.timing {indices: [0, "x"]}` changed animation 0 and succeeded; the entry is now
refused naming it. `edit.delete {ids: null}` took the key as present and deleted shapes instead
of text or the slide; null is the same as no `ids`. `shape.fill {ids: 12}` fell past the list
check and recoloured the selection; any present `ids` now goes through ids_param, which refuses
what is not a list of ids. An unescaped pipe in a docs/mcp.md table cell is escaped. Test.

… returnToZoom are accepted

The params doc separated the keys with semicolons, which the parser reads as
one `kind` parameter with a long remark; with storytold#1006's refusal of keys a
command's doc doesn't list, every `insert.zoom {slides}` call (and the pptx
roundtrip test) was refused. Commas make the four keys documented.
