Connector default sites face the other shape; formatting set on an empty shape survives text.set - #1014
Two engine fixes, both found by an AI agent building decks through the MCP server.
shape.connect with no fromSite/toSite picked the closest pair of connection sites. For two
boxes stacked or side by side that is the pair a person would pick, but for a diagonal
neighbour it chose a side site and the arrow ran across the box; agents drawing a diagram
rebuilt their connectors two or three times per deck, reading shape.sites and passing the
sites by hand. Now each shape uses the site that faces the other along the dominant direction
between their centres (a box mostly below is left from the bottom), which is where a person
glues an arrow; explicit sites are honoured as before. The params doc says so and names the
numbering (a box has 0 top, 1 left, 2 bottom, 3 right; shape.sites lists them). Dense graphs
still need routing: facing sites settle the stacked and side-by-side cases, but in a graph of a
dozen nodes a connector can still cross a box or another connector; that is a separate issue.
format.size, format.bold or format.color on a shape that has no text yet kept nothing, so
an agent's format.size followed by set_text lost the size when the text landed. An empty
body now keeps that formatting on its paragraph's end mark, and text.set keeps the first run's
properties or, while the text is still empty, the end mark's, so the two commands work in
either order.
Tests: connector_default_sites_follow_the_dominant_direction and text_set_keeps_the_formatting_of_an_empty_shape in the engine tests. cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -p deckcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo test -p deckcraft-engine
(334), cargo test -p deckcraft-mcp, cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets pass.
When connection sites are omitted or invalid, connections use sites facing one another along the dominant direction between shape centers. Valid explicitly specified sites are still honored.
Connections can attach to shapes nested within groups, and their endpoints update when groups move. Existing connectors can also be reconnected to grouped shapes.
Text formatting is retained when setting text in a paragraph with no runs. Formatting can also be applied to an empty shape and preserved when text is added.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
shape.connect now resolves grouped shapes and selects unspecified endpoint sites by directional alignment. text.set preserves formatting applied to an empty text shape. Regression tests cover both changes.
Changes: Connector site selection

Summary
Grouped shape lookup and rerouting crates/engine/src/connect.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Connection-site lookup searches nested group shapes and transforms their sites into slide coordinates. Connector rerouting uses this lookup. Tests cover grouped connectors and endpoint movement after group moves.
When a site index is omitted or invalid, shape.connect selects a site aligned with the direction between the shapes’ centers. Valid explicit indices remain in use. Tests cover directional defaults, including a triangle-to-shape connection.
Empty-text formatting
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Preserve formatting on empty text crates/engine/src/cmd/text.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
Shape-wide formatting creates a paragraph when the text body is empty. text.set uses the first paragraph’s end-mark formatting when it has no runs. A test checks that size and bold formatting remain after text is set.
Clearing a formatted shape before adding text can reset its formatting. This is a narrow, recoverable editing issue; the change is mergeable with a follow-up fix.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 0ee94
The changes remain confined to editing the active presentation. Existing command rollback and undo boundaries are retained, and no new access to credentials, external services, or other documents was identified. Public helper compatibility and concurrent hosting behavior remain outside the verified scope.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated mutation scope is the active presentation's current slide and its connector relationships. Grouped children become addressable connector targets, but the changed paths do not demonstrate broader tenant, service, credential, or data-store authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — MCP command input continues through Session::execute and the existing guarded command dispatch. The changed connector and formatting operations retain active-document editing rather than introducing another execution or external-I/O boundary.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Existing snapshot rollback limits partial document publication when nested insertion or later formatting work fails. The inspected API requires exclusive mutable Session access; serialization across external concurrent requests remains unverified.

Preserve formatting on empty generated paragraphs.
For First\n\nSecond, text.set creates a blank paragraph without runs, so the loop does not copy keep to its end mark. If text.edit targets that paragraph and text.insert adds text, ed::insert falls back to props_at, which returns the default end-mark properties. The inserted run therefore loses the shape-wide formatting.

Update the paragraph-formatting loop that applies `keep` to generated
paragraphs: when a paragraph has no runs, assign `keep` to its `end_props` so
later text inserted into an empty paragraph inherits the shape-wide formatting.

…he text survives text.set
shape.connect with no sites given picked the closest pair of sites, which for a diagonal neighbour
chose a side site and drew the arrow across the boxes. Each shape now uses the site that faces the
other along the direction between their centres (a box mostly below is left from the bottom),
which is where a person glues an arrow; the params doc says so.
format.size, format.bold, format.color on a shape that has no text yet kept nothing, so the size
vanished when set_text then landed the text. An empty body now keeps that formatting on the
paragraph's end mark and text.set keeps the first run's properties, or those, so the two work in
either order. A test for each.

…t the means of their sites
The mean of a shape's connection sites is off its centre when the sites
are not symmetric (a triangle's lie mostly along its base), which pulled
the dominant direction sideways and glued an arrow to a box's side when
the box was mostly below. The centres come from xfrm_of, so placeholders
and tables are measured as drawn.

…ows the group
An agent run found that connecting to a grouped shape answered ok but left
the connector's end `None`: the sites of a group member were computed in
the group's child space, and rerouting only looked at the slide's top-level
shapes, so the glue was dropped at once. Both now locate the shape anywhere
in the tree with the affine onto the slide, as PowerPoint glues to grouped
shapes.
