Fonts: resolve localized family names and preserve line metrics - #874
PPTX text using an installed font's localized family name fell back to another face because lookup retained only its English-or-first family name. This could lose the requested family and real bold weight. Retain bounded aliases from OpenType name IDs 1 and 16 in loaded faces and the native catalog, while preserving canonical font menus and legacy weight-family behavior.
Exact canonical families win before alias matches, including available style lists, exact/nearest style ranking and cached variable instances. An alias from another family cannot shadow a canonical family even when its style is a closer match.
Line metrics resolve the configured script families and compare face identity, cached once per paragraph style. An unrelated fallback's matching alias cannot change baseline or line height; explicitly configured script faces still contribute their own metrics.
Review and upstream integration
Address the maintainer asset review with Rust runtime fixtures derived from the existing minimal sfnt. No new font binaries or Python generators are committed.
Address the font-ownership review with resolved-face identity and synthetic fallback collisions across all three script slots and both load orders.
Merge current main (7be391a) into the existing PR branch, retaining reviewed commit 1cef948 and its history. The sole conflicted file was ROADMAP.md; all upstream entries and the original font progress notes are retained. No implementation changes were needed to resolve the merge, and the branch is updated without force-pushing.
Address the symbol-path test review: symbol cases use U+F088/U+F089, within the configured-symbol path; East Asian/complex-script cases retain plane-15 private-use characters. This follow-up changes only the existing regression test; production code remains identical to merge commit 5252cc5.
Open review follow-up:duplicate-face alias retention reproduces in private synthetic probes: duplicate canonical family/style files can discard later aliases. The minimal merge-maintenance update preserves existing duplicate-face selection; alias merging remains a separate focused production fix.
Validation
Focused suites pass: 34 font tests and 91 text tests, including the ownership regression and current upstream Symbol/empty-line regressions.
Existing synthetic coverage retains zh-CN/fr-FR name IDs 1/16, localized legacy weight families, a real Chinese cmap/outline, distinct Windows line metrics, canonical/style-list collisions and cached variable faces. The fallback-alias negative control on fd7d456 shifts baseline 43.2 to 64.8 and height 72 to 93.6; all six configured-slot/load-order cases pass with the retained fix, including positive metric ownership.
The pre-merge 1cef948 baseline passes its seven local gates. The merged branch passes all eight current local cargo xtask ci gates: format, pinned PDF dependencies, strict Clippy, workspace tests, separate doctests, assets, layering and all 23 WebAssembly package checks. Total: 1,798 passed, 6 ignored, none failed.
Windows LLVM Rust toolchain and pinned craft-fonts revision 43913056ce82a3fdad0ef69f6b88d1dc922a8104; serial test execution. No test or lint was disabled. These are local results; upstream workflow conclusions are tracked separately.
Private rendering comparison
Built current upstream and the merged PR in separate Cargo targets with identical fonts. Rendered all 32 slides as PNG, exported/rasterized all 32 PDF pages and freshly rasterized the unchanged reference PDF. Verified original-input hashes, page counts, 960 × 540 dimensions, the requested real bold title face and extracted-text coverage. All 32 pages were compared with the prior visual review: 29 remain pixel-identical in both outputs; all three changed reference/final pairs and six unchanged representative pairs were freshly inspected.
PNG mean absolute RGB difference: 15.831 → 14.144; 30 pages improve and 2 worsen.
PDF export mean absolute RGB difference: 20.373 → 20.276; 18 pages improve and 14 worsen.
Compared with the previous reviewed 1cef948 output, 3 PNG pages and 3 PDF raster pages change after incorporating upstream. The previous values are not presented as current-base measurements.
After the test-only follow-up, all 32 PNG slides and 32 PDF raster pages were regenerated from the final clean commit and are pixel-identical to 5252cc5; the reference measurements and visual assessment above remain valid.
These are raw 0–255 diagnostics, not fidelity percentages. Remaining reference mismatches include SVG-only pictures, some CJK wrapping/spacing, table or border positioning, vertical baselines and generated-number text extraction. The previously clipped table now fits after upstream integration; this is still not a claim of pixel-perfect rendering. Original documents, identifying content, comparison screenshots and private evidence remain outside Git. Unrelated docstring-coverage changes are excluded.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Improved font matching for localized and legacy family names.
Canonical font families take precedence when names overlap.
Improved selection of font styles, weights, and variable-font instances.
Localized font-family names can resolve fonts in presentation text.
Bug Fixes
Preserved text metrics when using localized East Asian font names.
Prevented similarly named fallback fonts from incorrectly changing line metrics.
Documentation
Updated font compatibility notes and roadmap details, including localized font-name resolution and partial CJK support.
Thanks — the localized-name lookup looks good. One policy point: we're keeping test assets (including small generated fonts) out of the app repo, since they accumulate and can't be reclaimed later. Could you build these test fonts inside the test instead — e.g. take the bytes of a minimal sfnt, splice in a name table with the zh-CN / fr-FR IDs 1 and 16 and patch usWeightClass (as faces_without_outlines_are_not_cataloged already patches tables), write them to a temp dir for the catalog check — and drop the .ttf/.py fixtures and their ATTRIBUTION rows? Small extra request: in FontDb::face, prefer exact canonical family matches before alias matches, so one font's alias can't pull in another family's faces.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The font database now recognizes localized and legacy family aliases while preserving canonical-family precedence. Text layout uses resolved face identity to assign line metrics. Tests cover alias lookup, style selection, variable-font instances, fallback collisions, and localized metrics.

When canonical family A does not cover a cluster, FontDb::cascade can select loaded face B. Since face.has_family_name(f) also matches aliases, B can be treated as the configured face when A is only B's alias. The layout then uses B's ascent and descent, which can move the baseline and change line height.
Resolve each configured family with FontDb::face and compare the returned face identity instead of matching aliases directly.

Use a character in the symbol-face range for the sym cases.
char::from_u32(0xf0840 + case as u32) generates U+F0840–U+F0845. shape_cells checks U+F000–U+F0FF, so the sym cases skip the configured st.sym face and do not test symbol metric ownership.
Use 0xf084 + case as u32 so the generated characters enter the configured symbol-face path.

Merge aliases before dropping a canonical duplicate.
load_family can pass multiple cataloged files to add_fonts. If two files have the same canonical family and style but different localized or legacy aliases, the second face is skipped at the locked duplicate check. Its aliases are lost. A later lookup through that alias can see the catalog entry but find cannot match the retained face, so face can return a fallback.
Merge the later face's alias sets into the retained face, including when the retained face was loaded earlier. Keep one face per canonical family/style.
