An agent told "change slide 3" over MCP passed index: 3 and edited the slide the editor calls 4.
Every slide, section, animation and table index is 0-based while the editor counts from 1, and
nothing said so: the server instructions and tool descriptions said only "Slide index",
inspect_document listed index 0..n with no displayed number, an index past the end answered
"no slide 8", and several commands (slide.hide, slide.duplicate, slide.layout,
slide.selectSlides, transition.*, animation.clear, a PDF export's slides list) took an
index past the end and answered ok having done nothing, so an agent passing the editor's number
for the last slide was told it had succeeded.

Changes

  • Wording. The MCP tool descriptions, the server instructions and the command signatures that
list_commands returns say "0-based" wherever an index is asked for (as reuse.rs already did),
and spell out "the editor shows index + 1" for slides.
  • number. document.inspect and slide.inspect return number (index + 1, what the
thumbnail pane shows) beside index. This is deliberately not Presentation::slide_number,
which adds the number printed on the slide and can start elsewhere in a .pptx.
  • Range in errors. cmd::out_of_range and cmd::no_slide_message word an index past the end
as no slide at index 8; indices run 0 through 7 (the editor shows index + 1). Used by every
slide command that takes an index (go, move, duplicate, delete, selectSlides, hide, layout,
reset, notes, rename, inspect, colorAt, transition.*, animation.clear, animation.get),
file.render, file.export (png, gif and the PDF slides list), the headless render_slide
and the control channel's ui.render. Section and animation indices get the same shape of
message, naming the command that was run.
  • No clamping. slide.move, section.move and animation.move refuse a to past the end
instead of clamping it. The Animation Pane's Move Down and the section menus' Move Section Down
are disabled on the last item so they never ask for one (before, the clamp made them a quiet
no-op; without the guard they would put an error in the status bar).
  • Docs. docs/mcp.md gains a Numbering paragraph; docs/control-protocol.md notes
    ui.render's slide is 0-based.

Behaviour change to be aware of

file.export to PDF with a slides array used to drop indices past the end silently (a test
from #344 asserted this). It now refuses them like the string form ("1-3, 5"), PNG and GIF
already did, so a request for slides [0, 8] of an 8-slide deck no longer writes a PDF missing a
slide with an ok answer. The test was updated. Happy to revert that one hunk if the drop was
intentional.

Tests

  • Engine: slide.go past the end names the range; slide.move past the end is refused and
nothing moves; every slide command with an index past the end is refused, names the command and
changes nothing (hide, duplicate, layout, delete, selectSlides, transition.set/timing,
animation.clear, gif and pdf export); section indices and section.move {to}; number stays
    index + 1 when first_slide_number is 5.
  • MCP: index parameters and the instructions say "0-based"; inspect_* report number;
out-of-range errors name the indices through tools/call; animation.move past the end is
    refused.
  • UI: a kittest test right-clicks the last animation in the Animation Pane and checks Move Down is
disabled and nothing lands in the status bar.
  • deckcraft-cli's describe test now expects index (0-based) for slide.go.
  • Checked end to end over stdio JSON-RPC against the headless server and, in connected mode,
against the running app: a fresh agent given "change the title of slide 3, hide slide 8, move
slide 2 to the end" picked indices 2, 7 and from: 1, to: 7 from the instructions and number
alone; "move slide 9" and a PDF of slides 1, 2 and 9 were refused with the range and wrote
    nothing.

cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy -D warnings (engine, mcp, ui-egui), cargo test (engine, mcp,
cli), cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets pass. The ui-egui suite passes apart from
replacefonts_tests::ribbon_button_opens_the_dialog_and_replaces, which fails identically on
main here and is unrelated.

After review

CodeRabbit pointed out that usize_param answered None for -1, 1.5 or "1" just as for an
absent key, so a malformed index quietly acted on the current slide, and such an entry in a
slides or indices list was dropped. Commit 7bfe7fa adds cmd::index_param, which tells absent
from malformed and refuses the latter (`index` must be a non-negative integer (a 0-based index), not -1) in every command above, in file.export's lists, in the headless render_slide and in
ui.render; at (an insertion position) keeps its clamp, which docs/mcp.md now states. One test
covers all of them. The branch is also merged with main.

Part of #298 (the "index out of range names the range" bullet). Related: #236 (the same confusion in
the CLI, settled by #228), #359 and #361 (the CLI's fix).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid or out-of-range slide, section, animation, export, and table-cell indices now return clear errors instead of being ignored, defaulted, or clamped. PDF exports reject invalid slide selections.
    • Render commands reject invalid supplied slide indices rather than falling back to the selected slide. Rejected operations leave document state unchanged.
    • Slide inspection shows both the zero-based index and displayed slide number.
    • Move-down options are unavailable for animations and sections already at the end; move operations reject destinations past the end.
    • Slide reuse rejects invalid source indices and malformed insertion positions.
  • Documentation
    • Clarified zero-based index conventions, displayed slide numbering, valid ranges, and slide-selection formats across commands and protocols.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Document that the string form of slides uses 1-based slide numbers.

The slides array form takes 0-based indices. The string range form ("1-3,5") goes to parse_slide_range. That function treats each number as a 1-based slide number: it rejects 0 and subtracts 1 (lo - 1..hi). docs/mcp.md now states that every index is 0-based, including "slides in export". If an agent follows that rule and passes "2-3" to mean indices 2 and 3, the export silently contains indices 1 and 2. A string such as "0-2" fails with an error.

Mark the range form as 1-based in this params string. Make the same change to the docs/mcp.md Numbering paragraph and the MCP export tool description.

… satisfies both PRs' tests

The cherry-picks onto the rebased base left eight engine tests twice with differing bodies; the
old bundle's final body is kept. no_animation now carries the 0-based range the way no_slide does
(storytold#990) while still naming the slide it looked at (storytold#1006).

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject malformed non-null slides containers.

file.export treats booleans, numbers, and objects passed as slides as omitted. This sets PdfOptions.slides to None, so PDF export uses the default slide set and can write output instead of returning an input error.

null and empty or whitespace-only strings currently act as omission defaults. Non-empty malformed range strings already return an error through parse_slide_range.

Comment thread crates/engine/src/cmd/slide.rs Resolved
zberry added a commit to zberry/deckcraft that referenced this pull request Oct 28, 2026
… it as omitted

Review of storytold#990 found that `usize_param` answers `None` for `-1`, `1.5` or `"1"` just as for an
absent key, so a malformed `index` fell back to the current slide: slide.go, the section commands,
transition.*, animation.clear/get and the `to` of animation.move, file.render, slide.colorAt,
file.export's `slide`, slide.inspect, the headless render_slide and the control channel's ui.render
all acted on the current slide, and an entry like `-1` in `slides` (pdf, gif) or `indices`
(slide.selectSlides) was dropped from the list.

They now use upstream's `opt_usize_param` (which already guarded slide.duplicate, delete, hide,
layout and animation.remove), so a malformed index is refused as "`index` is not a valid index";
the lists refuse an entry with "must be a non-negative integer (a 0-based index)". `at`
(slide.new, section.add) gets the same check for its value; one past the end is still clamped, and
docs/mcp.md now says so.

…, return the displayed slide number, and refuse an index past the end everywhere

An agent told "change slide 3" passed index 3 and edited the slide the editor calls 4: the server
instructions and every tool description said only "Slide index", inspect_document listed index
0..n with no displayed number, and an index past the end answered "no slide 8" or, for slide.hide,
slide.duplicate, slide.layout, slide.selectSlides, transition.*, animation.clear and a PDF export's
`slides` list, did nothing (or wrote a PDF without that slide) and answered ok. Now:

- The MCP tool descriptions, the server instructions and the command signatures list_commands
returns say "0-based" where an index is asked for, as reuse.rs already did; the editor's
"index + 1" is spelled out for slides.
- document.inspect and slide.inspect return `number` (index + 1, what the thumbnail pane shows;
Presentation::slide_number adds the number printed on the slide, which a .pptx can start
  elsewhere) beside `index`.
- cmd::out_of_range and cmd::no_slide_message word an index past the end as "no slide at index 8;
indices run 0 through 7 (the editor shows index + 1)", naming the command that was run. Used by
every slide command that takes an index (go, move, duplicate, delete, selectSlides, hide, layout,
reset, notes, rename, inspect, colorAt, transition.*, animation.clear, animation.get), file.render,
file.export (png, gif and the PDF `slides` list, which used to drop them), the headless
render_slide and the control channel's ui.render. Sections and animations get the same shape of
  message.
- slide.move, section.move and animation.move refuse a `to` past the end instead of clamping it;
the Animation Pane's Move Down and the section menus' Move Section Down are disabled on the last
item rather than asking for one.
- The CLI's describe test expects "index (0-based)" for slide.go.
- docs/mcp.md and docs/control-protocol.md say the same.

Part of storytold#298. Related: storytold#236, storytold#359, storytold#361 (the CLI's render --slide documented as 0-based).

…nd slide.reuse is 1-based, as the Print page takes it

The list form is 0-based like every other index; the range form mirrors the Print box and rejects 0.
The MCP export tool takes only the list.
