Found while testing crates/engine/src/cmd/animation.rs:232-246 (remove); same pattern in each_target :265 and move_anim :250 (no existing issue): animation.remove with an invalid (negative or non-integer) index removes the selected shape's animations.

Cause

animation.remove and each_target (used by animation.timing and animation.options) read index with usize_param. That returns None for a negative, non-integer or string value, so a bad index was treated as absent and the commands fell back to the selected shapes. animation.remove deleted all of their animations, and timing and options changed them, all while reporting success. animation.move also reads index with usize_param, but it requires the index, so a bad value already failed with a "missing index" error, which was misleading.

Fix

animation.remove, animation.move and each_target now read index with opt_usize_param, as slide.delete does. For remove, timing and options, an absent index still falls back to the selection. A present but invalid index returns a BadParams error and changes nothing. A regression test covers -1, 1.5 and "x" for remove, timing, options and move.

Verified

  • Regression test cmd::animation::tests::invalid_index_is_an_error_not_the_selection: fails on main without the fix and passes with it (cargo test -p deckcraft-engine --lib invalid_index_is_an_error_not_the_selection).
  • cargo xtask ci passes.

Not changed

The to parameter of animation.move still uses usize_param. It is required, so a bad value already produces a missing-parameter error and never falls back to the selection.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Invalid animation indices, including negative numbers, fractional values, and text, are now rejected instead of being treated as if no index was provided.
    • Invalid indices no longer silently affect animation operations, helping prevent unintended changes to animations.

Walkthrough

Animation commands now propagate errors for invalid optional indices instead of treating them as missing. Tests cover negative, fractional, and string indices and verify that the animation count remains unchanged.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/animation.rs: animation.remove now propagates errors from optional index parsing; invalid indices no longer fall through to removing animations from selected targets.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/animation.rs: animation.move now propagates optional index parsing errors while retaining the missing-index error.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/animation.rs: each_target now propagates invalid optional-index errors instead of treating them as absent and applying changes to selected shapes.
  • observed — Modified behavior in crates/engine/src/cmd/animation.rs: Adds a test asserting that negative, fractional, and string indices are rejected by animation.remove, animation.timing, animation.options, and animation.move, and that the animation count remains unchanged.

Explanation

The title names the main change: animation remove, move, timing, and options now reject invalid index values instead of treating them as absent. The raw summary and PR objectives both describe this change. The title says "Reject invalid index" in four commands, which matches the diff. It is specific enough for a teammate scanning history to understand the primary change.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Assert the invalid-index error for animation.move.

The previous animation.move behavior returned a missing-index error for an invalid index. Line 587 also accepts that error, so this test passes if the old behavior returns. Check the BadParams message for an invalid index, not only is_err().
