Window per workbook (2/4): windows in the engine; New Window shares the workbook - #2617
The engine keeps a list of windows, each showing one workbook, and View › New Window opens a second window on the same workbook.
Stacked on #2616; review the commits after it. No craft-libs change.
What changes
Windows in the engine (crates/engine/src/windows.rs). A session holds windows, each {id, doc, hidden, view}. The active window's view (selection, active sheet, scroll) lives in its document, as before, and the others keep theirs until they are activated. Opening or creating a workbook adds a window, and closing a workbook removes its windows. Window ids are never reused.
New Window.view.newWindow opens a second window on the active workbook; it shares the workbook, and an edit in one shows in the other. Titles are Name:1, Name:2, renumbered when one closes. file.close closes the active window, with no prompt while the workbook has another window, and {document: true} closes the workbook.
Commands. These take a window id, a document id or an index:
window.list (query) and window.close {window?, doc?, force?};
window.activate {window | doc | index};
view.switchWindows, view.hideWindow and view.unhideWindow.
Rows are {window, doc, index, title, dirty, active, hidden}.
Control channel and MCP.engine.execute takes window or doc and runs the command there. The previously active window comes back afterwards, unless the command switched windows. ui.inspect reports the windows, and every MCP workbook tool takes window/doc; list_windows is new.
A cell draft settles on every window switch, including between two windows of one workbook.
Checks
Engine tests cover window ids, New Window titles and renumbering, closing a window or a document, hide and unhide, and routing by window or doc. window.close is left out of the empty-params and command-sequence fuzz, as file.close is.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Open multiple windows for the same workbook, with independent selections and sheet views that share workbook changes.
Switch between open windows from the View menu or window controls. Window lists show active windows and unsaved changes.
Target supported commands and tools to a specific window or workbook, and list open windows.
Improvements
Closing a window keeps its workbook open if another window still shows it; closing the last window closes the workbook.
Draft edits are handled before switching windows or closing workbooks, and save prompts apply to the workbook.
…rkbooks
A cell being typed when File > New ran (macOS menu, control channel) stayed
open over the new workbook, and Enter wrote it there; the first workbook
stayed clean and nothing in the UI reached it.
- Every file.* and window command (window.activate, view.newWindow,
view.hideWindow, view.unhideWindow, view.switchWindows with a doc) first
commits the cell and text-box drafts as Enter would, or drops a draft its
workbook refuses, still reporting why. Finder, argv and dropped opens go
through file.open and get the same.
- The cell editor records its workbook's uid; the grid draws a draft only
over that workbook, and a commit always goes into it.
- view.switchWindows takes a `doc` uid to bring that workbook forward and
lists index, doc, title, dirty, active and hidden. Menu-style calls with
no doc open the View tab's new Switch Windows dropdown.
- macOS: the Window menu lists the open workbooks (unsaved bullet, active
check), and Quit closes the window so unsaved workbooks are asked about.
… nothing
- File and window commands stop when the workbook refuses the cell or
text-box draft (validation Stop, bad formula, protected text box): the
draft stays open in its cell with the reason shown, to fix or Esc. The
per-frame backstop brings a refused draft's workbook back to the front.
- An F2 draft committed with its text unchanged writes nothing: no undo
step, and the workbook stays clean through Save, Print or New.
- macOS Window menu: the active workbook's check is put back every poll,
since choosing a check item flips it.
Session keeps a window list (stable ids, per-window selection, active sheet
and per-sheet selections swapped into the workbook without dirtying it)
in place of the index-based hidden list and the copying New Window.
Titles read Name:1 / Name:2 for a workbook with several windows.
File > Close closes one window of several; window.close, window.list and
window ids for window.activate, view.switchWindows, view.hideWindow and
view.unhideWindow. Control channel and MCP tools take window/doc ids;
scroll positions and cell drafts belong to their window.
Scripts can't run the View tab's window commands (Switch Windows, New Window, Hide, Unhide):
they change the active workbook, as window.* steps do. The Switch Windows button names its
accessibility role with egui::Role (egui 0.37).

Walkthrough
The change adds multiple windows per workbook, with separate view state and window-targeted commands. It updates draft handling, window-switching controls, and control-channel and MCP execution. Window listings report active and unsaved state.
Changes: Shared Workbook Windows
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Window state and lifecycle crates/engine/src/windows.rs, crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
The session tracks windows separately from workbooks. Windows retain separate view state and support activation, hiding, unhiding, listing, targeting, and closure. Tests cover shared workbook data and independent window views.
Window and workbook commands crates/engine/src/cmd/*, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/engine/tests/it/command_sequence_fuzz.rs
Window commands accept window or workbook selectors. File close distinguishes closing the active window from closing the workbook. Script execution refuses window commands.
Window-specific UI state and drafts crates/ui-egui/src/{editor.rs,grid.rs,lib.rs,ribbon.rs,dialogs.rs}, apps/gridcraft/src/{main.rs,native_menu.rs}, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/{file_menu.rs,keytips_generated.rs}
The UI saves view state by window and records draft ownership. It settles drafts during file and window operations. The View tab and macOS menu list and switch windows.
Target-aware control and MCP execution crates/ui-egui/src/control.rs, crates/mcp/src/{headless.rs,tools.rs,tests.rs}
Control and MCP requests can target a window or workbook. MCP adds list_windows; control inspection includes the window list and active window.
The protocol, MCP, and UI documentation describe window targeting, listing, and shared-workbook behavior. The roadmap adds corresponding progress and revision entries.

Fix the unchanged-draft sheet handling and reconcile the parity documentation before merging.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 57da3
Window targeting remains contained within the existing session, but a close confirmation for one workbook can act on another workbook, risking loss of unsaved changes.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: A targeted dirty close loses workbook ownership across its confirmation. With workbook A active, an engine.execute request targeting dirty workbook B with file.close opens a confirmation titled for B. The target wrapper then restores A. Choosing Don't Save force-closes A and all its windows, discarding A's unsaved changes while B remains open; Save likewise acts on A. The underlying title-only dialog predates this PR, but temporary target restoration introduces this deterministic mismatch without requiring another window-switch request. This is a destructive ownership and failure-containment regression, not evidence of additional caller privileges.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated destructive outcome is bounded to open workbooks in the same UI session. One mistaken confirmation can discard the restored workbook and all its windows. It requires an authorized targeted command and a subsequent confirmation action; the inspected path does not establish cross-session or unauthenticated reachability.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The material regression is a mismatch between the workbook named in a confirmation and the workbook affected by its action. Caller-controlled target identity survives only through synchronous execution, while the later destructive action uses ambient active-window state. This can misdirect user intent without granting the caller authority it did not already possess.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
inferred — Window selectors are routing identifiers, not new authorization credentials. Unknown IDs are rejected within the session. The unchanged desktop control server binds to loopback and authenticates connections with a token; before this PR, an authorized caller could already activate any open workbook by index and then issue commands.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The confirmation's Cancel action performs no save or close, whereas Don't Save unconditionally force-closes the active document. Save checks the active document's dirty state before closing it, but neither action validates the confirmation's originating identity. The headless backend drops queued UI requests, so this deferred-confirmation failure concerns UI-backed execution rather than a headless dialog flow.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Carry stable document and window identity through deferred lifecycle requests, and revalidate that identity before Save, Don't Save, or continuation. Keep the operation bound to its originating workbook rather than relying on whichever window is active when the user responds.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Return to the draft's sheet before the unchanged-draft shortcut returns.
The new early return skips the sheet.activate step later in commit_edit_here. That step exists because point mode can leave another sheet active. The comment on that step says so.
Trigger:
Press F2 on a formula cell.
Click another sheet tab. The text stays unchanged.
Press Enter.
Result:
original == text, so the function returns early.
The other sheet stays active.
move_after_enter moves the selection on that other sheet, not on the draft's sheet.
Before this change, the code always activated ed.sheet first.
Fix: activate ed.sheet inside the early-return branch.

Update the "Multiple windows per workbook" row so it matches the new row.
Line 37 still reads "yes | no (#162)". It points to hardware-parity.md.
Line 38 now says New Window, Switch Windows and per-window state are done. The only remaining limit is one OS window for all workbooks.
The two rows contradict each other. Merge them, or change Line 37 to describe only the missing separate OS windows. Check hardware-parity.md for the same stale status.
As per path instructions: "Update the affected docs (and their timestamp lines and revision history) whenever work lands."

Replace the WW journal assertion with UI-state checks.
WW takes the empty-parameter view.switchWindows branch. That branch sets the View tab, clears the ribbon collapse, sets open_switch_windows, and returns before self.run. No engine command runs, so session.journal gets no view.switchWindows entry. The test is registered in the default it test binary with no #[ignore] or feature gate, so this failing assertion breaks the ordinary cargo test run for the UI crate. Replace the journal assertion with assertions on the View tab and the opened Switch Windows list.
