Window per workbook (3/4): a native window per workbook window - #2618
Each window gets its own native window: opening or creating a workbook opens a window, and New Window opens a second native window on the same workbook.
The native windows come from craft-window (storytold/craft-libs#340). Every craft-libs crate is pinned to one storytold/craft-libs main revision, b926b5c0.
Per-window UI state (crates/ui-egui/src/window_ui.rs). Each window keeps its own cell and text-box drafts, dialog, Backstage, messages, grid state, Name Box, key tips, chart selection and mode. The window shown in a viewport is swapped in before the viewport draws.
Native windows (crates/ui-egui/src/doc_windows.rs, native builds only). The engine's visible windows are mirrored into craft_window::Viewports. A title gets " — Edited" while its workbook is unsaved. When the first window closes, another window takes over the root viewport. The web build keeps one window.
Routing. Shortcuts and menus act on the focused window. The ribbon acts on its own window, and control requests and scripts go to the last-focused window. Leaving a window commits its draft.
Close and quit. Closing one of several windows on a workbook doesn't prompt; closing the last window of an unsaved workbook asks to save. Quit asks once for each unsaved workbook, in that workbook's window, and Cancel stops it. On Windows and Linux, closing the last window quits. On macOS the app keeps running with no window, and New or Open shows one again.
Control channel.ui.screenshot and synthetic input run in the first (root) window's pass. With several windows open, a screenshot captures the root window, and it fails if that window shows another workbook than the one asked for.
Checks
crates/ui-egui/tests/it/doc_windows.rs runs each viewport as a nested pass. It covers:
a swap keeps the selection and draft;
closing one of two windows doesn't prompt;
the last unsaved window prompts;
the macOS no-window state;
quit with two unsaved workbooks;
the root viewport passing to another window;
focus routing.
Also covered: feedback from a command that switched windows shows in the window it left active. The stack was tested by hand on macOS at its top (#2619).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Open a workbook in multiple desktop windows. Each window keeps its own view and editing state while sharing the same workbook.
Switch between open windows, hide or restore windows, and target workbook tools and commands to a specific window or workbook.
View open-window details, including titles and unsaved-change status.
Improvements
Closing a window leaves the workbook open when other windows still use it. Save prompts appear when closing the last window with unsaved changes or quitting.
…rkbooks
A cell being typed when File > New ran (macOS menu, control channel) stayed
open over the new workbook, and Enter wrote it there; the first workbook
stayed clean and nothing in the UI reached it.
- Every file.* and window command (window.activate, view.newWindow,
view.hideWindow, view.unhideWindow, view.switchWindows with a doc) first
commits the cell and text-box drafts as Enter would, or drops a draft its
workbook refuses, still reporting why. Finder, argv and dropped opens go
through file.open and get the same.
- The cell editor records its workbook's uid; the grid draws a draft only
over that workbook, and a commit always goes into it.
- view.switchWindows takes a `doc` uid to bring that workbook forward and
lists index, doc, title, dirty, active and hidden. Menu-style calls with
no doc open the View tab's new Switch Windows dropdown.
- macOS: the Window menu lists the open workbooks (unsaved bullet, active
check), and Quit closes the window so unsaved workbooks are asked about.
… nothing
- File and window commands stop when the workbook refuses the cell or
text-box draft (validation Stop, bad formula, protected text box): the
draft stays open in its cell with the reason shown, to fix or Esc. The
per-frame backstop brings a refused draft's workbook back to the front.
- An F2 draft committed with its text unchanged writes nothing: no undo
step, and the workbook stays clean through Save, Print or New.
- macOS Window menu: the active workbook's check is put back every poll,
since choosing a check item flips it.
Session keeps a window list (stable ids, per-window selection, active sheet
and per-sheet selections swapped into the workbook without dirtying it)
in place of the index-based hidden list and the copying New Window.
Titles read Name:1 / Name:2 for a workbook with several windows.
File > Close closes one window of several; window.close, window.list and
window ids for window.activate, view.switchWindows, view.hideWindow and
view.unhideWindow. Control channel and MCP tools take window/doc ids;
scroll positions and cell drafts belong to their window.
Each engine window is drawn in its own native window through craft-window's
immediate-viewport driver (desktop only; the web app keeps one window). The
root viewport shows one window and adopts another when its window closes.
- WindowUi: the cell draft, text-box draft, dialog, Backstage, message,
toast, notice, grid state, name box, key tips, selected chart, Tab run and
edit mode are per window. SheetApp's fields hold the active window's; the
others are parked and swapped in when a window is drawn or activated, and
after any command that switched windows.
- Session::show_window makes a window current for drawing without counting
as an activation.
- The ribbon in each window acts on it; menu bar commands and scripts go to
the window focused last. Leaving a window enters its draft as Enter would.
- A window's close button runs window.close: one of several windows on a
workbook closes without asking, a workbook's last asks when unsaved.
SheetApp::request_quit (macOS Quit item, Dock quit) asks about each unsaved
workbook in its window; Cancel stops. Save Changes answers moved to
SheetApp::answer_save_changes.
- The last window closed quits on Windows and Linux; macOS hides the root
and keeps running until New or Open.
- Fonts are bound for every open workbook, since each may be showing.
craft-window is pinned to the aiongg/craft-libs window-list branch until it
merges into storytold/craft-libs.
… it left active
after_engine, show_open_warnings and alert bring the per-window state in line
with the engine's active window first, so a notice, message or toast from
opening a workbook (also by a script on the session) lands in the opened
workbook's window instead of being parked with the previous one.
Scripts can't run the View tab's window commands (Switch Windows, New Window, Hide, Unhide):
they change the active workbook, as window.* steps do. The Switch Windows button names its
accessibility role with egui::Role (egui 0.37).
craft-update, craft-window, craft-ui and craft-print all come from one craft-libs revision, the
head of storytold/craft-libs#340 on the aiongg fork, until storytold#340 merges.

Summary
Engine window state and lifecycle crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/windows.rs
The engine tracks window IDs, workbook associations, visibility, activation order, and per-window view state. It adds operations to create, activate, close, hide, unhide, list, and target windows.
Window commands and validation crates/engine/src/cmd/*, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/engine/tests/it/command_sequence_fuzz.rs
Commands create and switch shared-workbook windows, and close either a window or its last workbook window. Tests cover targeting, view state, hiding, and close behavior.
Per-window UI state and draft handling crates/ui-egui/src/{editor.rs,grid.rs,lib.rs,ribbon.rs,window_ui.rs,dialogs.rs}, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/*
The UI keeps window-specific view and interface state. Drafts retain workbook and window identity and are committed before relevant switches and file operations. The View tab adds a window switcher.
Targeted control and MCP operations crates/ui-egui/src/control.rs, crates/mcp/src/*, docs/control-protocol.md, docs/mcp.md
Control and MCP requests can target a window or workbook. MCP adds list_windows; control inspection includes the window list and active window.
Desktop viewports correspond to visible engine windows. Focus, close, quit, file-drop, and macOS Window-menu handling are connected to window state. Dependency declarations and desktop behavior documentation are updated.

The window-targeting behavior is mergeable with no identified current-head risk.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to dbec5
Automation targeting one workbook can restore another workbook as active while retaining the targeted workbook’s dialog. A subsequent queued confirmation may execute against the wrong workbook. This is a bounded workbook-integrity risk within an already-authorized application session, not a demonstrated expansion of access privileges.
Retained concerns
Medium · reliability · inferred: Scoped control execution does not restore interface ownership together with engine ownership. Starting in window A, an ordinary engine command targeted at B can swap B’s parked dialog into the live interface fields, then restore only the engine to A. If another queued request confirms that dialog before end-of-pass synchronization, its command executes against A. This undermines cross-workbook failure containment even though the client already has application-wide authority.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The identified ownership mismatch is bounded to open workbooks in one application session and requests from an already-authorized automation client. Explicit targeting is not itself a new authorization bypass: the base already permitted enumerating workbooks, activating them by index, and issuing arbitrary commands.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — The decision-relevant failure path requires a command-backed dialog parked in B, a non-switching command temporarily targeted at B from A, and a subsequent dialog confirmation processed in the same request-drain pass. Confirmation uses the live dialog’s command without restoring its owning window. This supports a workbook-integrity concern, not demonstrated privilege escalation or a verified protection-setting bypass.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Screenshots and synthetic-input consumption are restricted to root-viewport passes. Screenshot issuance and completion reject changed document or viewport identity, and MCP screenshots do not accept workbook targeting through the new wrapper.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Rejected cell edits restore their draft and error state. Focus changes can park that refused draft rather than discard it, while quit stops on refusal. Text-box edits independently check workbook and worksheet identity and restore their draft on error. These checks limit the ownership concern but do not synchronize dialog ownership between queued requests.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Routed commands change the most-recently-used window order of the target workbook.
enter_target calls activate_window(id), and leave_target calls activate_window(back). activate_window bumps last_active for the entered window. The show_window doc comment (Lines 172-173) says it exists so the most recently active window of each workbook stays the same.
Trigger: workbook Book1 has windows A (most recent) and B. The active window is C on another workbook. A routed call such as MCP get_cell {window: B} or control engine.execute {window: B} makes B more recent than A. After the call returns, Target::Doc(book1), doc_window, and Session::set_active resolve to B instead of A. file.open on an already-open path calls set_active, so it focuses B instead of A.
Use show_window in both places so a routed command does not count as an activation.

Keep the previous window active when draft settlement fails.
When focus moves from a window with an invalid draft, settle_drafts() returns an error and keeps the draft open. The code ignores that error and activates target anyway. The invalid draft window then loses focus, contrary to the documented refusal contract.
Suggested fix
// The user moved to another window: the previous window's draft is entered there,
// as Enter would. One its workbook refuses stays open in that window.
app.enter_window(previous);
- let _ = app.settle_drafts();+ if app.settle_drafts().is_err() {+ self.sync(app, &ctx);+ return;+ }
}
app.enter_window(target);
