Refs #2377 (request 4 only, so this does not close the issue).

What

GridCraft already keeps several workbooks open in one window (window.activate, View › Switch Windows), but there was no visible way to move between them. Once two or more workbooks are showing, a tab strip appears under the title bar:

  • click a tab to switch workbooks (a cell being edited is committed first);
  • × or middle click closes the workbook through file.close, so the Save Changes question still comes first; a dot replaces the × while there are unsaved changes;
  • + opens a new workbook;
  • windows hidden with View › Hide stay off the strip;
  • long titles are cut with an ellipsis, and the strip scrolls sideways when it overflows.

With one workbook open nothing changes. No new commands, strings or assets: it reuses window.activate, file.close, file.new and the already translated labels "Close" and "New Workbook".

Tests

crates/ui-egui/tests/it/document_tabs.rs (8 tests): no strip with one workbook, one tab per workbook, click switches, × closes an inactive tab, middle click closes, unsaved changes ask first, + adds a workbook, hidden windows have no tab.

cargo clippy -p gridcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -D warnings, cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets pass. In cargo test -p gridcraft-ui-egui, interaction::column_autocomplete_folds_case_beyond_ascii and interaction::language_switch_renders_the_ribbon_and_persists fail with a missing-glyph panic (no CRAFT_FONTS_DIR here); they fail the same way on main without this change. cargo xtask ci (including wasm) was not run in full.

The other requests in #2377

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a document tab strip for switching between open workbooks, closing them, and creating new ones.
    • Unsaved workbooks are marked with a dot, and the active tab is brought into view when needed.
    • Tabs are hidden when fewer than two eligible windows are open and in native-window mode.

…storytold#2377)

The engine already keeps several workbooks open and switches with
`window.activate`, but the only way to move between them was View > Switch
Windows. A tab strip now shows once two or more workbooks are visible:
click to switch, x or middle click to close (through File > Close, so the
Save Changes question still comes first), + for a new workbook, a dot in
place of the x while there are unsaved changes. Windows hidden with
View > Hide stay off the strip. Long titles are cut with an ellipsis and the
strip scrolls sideways when it overflows.

Covers request 4 of storytold#2377 for GridCraft. Reuses existing translated labels
(Close, New Workbook); no new assets.

Walkthrough

The sheet UI now shows document tabs for visible windows in non-native mode. Users can switch or close windows and create workbooks from the tab strip. These actions account for active edits. Integration tests cover tab visibility, actions, and horizontal scrolling.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 8e274

Long tab strips can repeatedly interrupt horizontal navigation by snapping back to the active tab. This usability issue should be fixed before merge.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to a52b4

The tabs reuse existing window and save controls and commit active edits before changing windows. No introduced security issue was established. Failed-save recovery and interactions with per-window dialogs remain only partially verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The reviewed interaction affects windows and workbooks already present in the same session, including an inactive workbook selected for closure. The new handlers introduce no demonstrated remote caller, additional credential authority, or cross-tenant capability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Workbook titles are rendered as text, while lifecycle commands use fixed names and window IDs obtained from Session. Title content is not used to construct executable commands or select close targets.
  • inferred — Save Changes is shown through an ordinary egui window, so modality should not be assumed. WindowUi stores dialogs and swaps them alongside editors, supporting window-local prompt ownership when switching tabs. Complete interruption and recovery behavior remains partially verified.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing Save Changes flow can dismiss its question after a save error or a transition to Save As without retaining an automatic close continuation. The workbook remains open when still dirty. This behavior predates the PR and was not established as an introduced or materially worsened security condition.

…only on change (storytold#2377)

main replaced `hidden_windows` indices with per-window state (`Session::windows`,
native windows on the desktop). The tab strip now has one tab per window (a
workbook with New Window shows `Name:1`, `Name:2`), switches with
`window.activate {window}` and closes with `window.close {window}`, and draws
only where windows are not native (`native_windows` false): on the desktop
each window is its own OS window.

Review follow-ups:
- Hidden windows are tracked by window id, so closing an earlier workbook can
  no longer leave the wrong one hidden (test: hide, then close an earlier tab).
- The active tab is scrolled into view only when the active window or the set
  of tabs changes, so the strip can be scrolled to the tabs beyond it (test
  scrolls away and checks it stays).
