Document-based window state and commands crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/*, crates/engine/src/tests.rs |
Window commands now list, activate, cycle, hide, and unhide documents using stable IDs or indices. Hidden state follows document IDs when documents close or change index. Tests cover command results, selection, and hidden-window behavior. |
Workbook switching in the UI crates/ui-egui/src/keymap.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/keytips/*, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/*, docs/*, ROADMAP.md |
The View menu and keyboard shortcuts switch between workbooks. The UI commits edits before document changes and clears selected chart and grid trace state after successful changes. Tests and documentation cover switching controls and shortcuts. |
macOS Window menu synchronization apps/gridcraft/Cargo.toml, apps/gridcraft/src/main.rs, apps/gridcraft/src/native_menu.rs, apps/gridcraft/tests/mac_menu_appkit.rs |
The AppKit Window menu lists visible workbooks, marks the active workbook, labels edited workbooks, and activates a selected document. Its entries update when documents change. Tests cover menu contents and synchronization. |

Possibly related issues
- storytold/gridcraft issue 162: The change adds in-window workbook switching, but does not add native windows for open workbooks.
- storytold/gridcraft issue 2377: The change adds workbook navigation in one application window through menus and cycling commands.
- storytold/wordcraft issue 3890: The change adds workbook switching in one window, but does not add the requested multiple-window support.
- storytold/craft-launcher issue 833: The change adds workbook navigation within GridCraft, but not a shared cross-application workspace or tab bar.

Merge Risk:
Minimal · up to f9f4c
-
Workbook switching preserves the edit boundary, and the identified documentation issues are corrected. No outstanding issue identified here prevents merging after normal checks.
Security architecture risk:
Low · up to f9f4c
-
Workbook selection remains limited to open documents, with validation and edit-commit controls protecting transitions. No introduced security issue was established. Compatibility with existing automation clients remains uncertain because several command results and failure behaviors change.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.Security review details
-
Security Blast Radius
- inferred — The inspected change affects open workbooks, their path metadata, and pending edits within a desktop session. Listing exposes additional document metadata, but the existing control interface already provides workbook read/write and file operations; no new privilege level was established along this route.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
- observed — The existing optional control server binds to 127.0.0.1 and accepts structured command requests. Loopback binding limits network reach but is not local-peer authentication. The listener and dispatcher are unchanged in the full PR comparison, and the new window commands use that existing authority path.
- observed — Native-menu item IDs encode document UIDs separately from display titles. Menu events check that the UID still exists before dispatch, and engine selection validates membership again. A stale menu entry therefore does not select a different workbook merely because indices shifted.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
- observed — Repeated next or previous commands intentionally advance state again. The unchanged control transport drops abandoned requests that have not started, but reports an unknown outcome when a started request times out; it does not promise exactly-once window transitions after such a timeout.

Read the whole diff at 1441777. gate / gate (ubuntu-24.04) and SonarCloud pass on this head.
The engine side is solid and tested: windows are identified by the document uid rather than an index, hiding by uid survives a close that shifts indices, set_active unhides, close_document never leaves a hidden window active, hiding the last visible window is refused, and window.next and window.previous wrap and skip hidden windows. The selector handling is strict (a given but unusable id or index is an error, id wins) and the tests include the last-visible-window close case.
One limit on this approval: the macOS-only parts (native_menu.rs window-list sync, the windowsMenu replacement and the AppKit exclusion, and tests/mac_menu_appkit.rs) are not built or run by the checks listed on this head, so for those I can only say the code reads correctly, including the rebuild-the-submenu approach and the dependency change in apps/gridcraft/Cargo.toml.

gate and SonarCloud pass at this head. Read the engine and macOS menu source. Windows are now identified by the document uid instead of an index that shifts when a lower document closes: window.list, window.activate (id wins over index, a given but invalid selector is an error), window.next and window.previous (wrapping over visible windows), and hide/unhide that refuse to hide the last visible window and unhide the most recent. The Window menu rebuilds its submenu only when the set of documents changes and updates titles and checks in place, and a click on a document closed since the menu was drawn is ignored. The AppKit-only parts (native_menu, the objc2 dependency move) are not built by the Linux gate, so they were read but not run. The tests were skimmed. No defect found.

Rebased onto current main (17b9f6f). The one conflict was in |
Several workbooks can be open in the one window, but nothing in the interface
let you move between them: the Window menu on the Mac listed only New Window
and the sheet keys, the ribbon's View › Window group had no Switch Windows,
and the only way was `window.activate {index}` over the control channel.
The engine now identifies a window by its document (`DocState::uid`), which
is stable while indices shift as documents close: `window.list` (what
`view.switchWindows` returns too) reports id, index, title, path, dirty,
active and hidden; `window.activate` takes an id (or an index) and unhides
the window if it was hidden; `window.next` and `window.previous` cycle the
visible windows and wrap; `view.hideWindow` keeps hidden windows by document
and refuses to hide the last visible one; closing a document keeps the active
document and never leaves a hidden window active. A later window-per-workbook
build maps its native windows to the same ids and keeps this command family.
View › Window gets Excel's Switch Windows drop-down: the open workbooks,
numbered, the active one checked, a dirty one marked (Alt, W, W opens it).
Ctrl+F6 / Ctrl+Shift+F6 and Ctrl+Tab / Ctrl+Shift+Tab cycle, as in Excel; a
switch commits the cell or text box being edited first (the editor isn't
document-aware) and drops the object selection, and the other document's
scroll and selection come back as they were. With many workbooks the
drop-down scrolls. On the Mac the native Window menu lists the
open workbooks with a check on the active one, kept in sync with the session,
plus Next Window (Cmd+`) and Previous Window (Cmd+Shift+`), the system's
window-cycling chord. The documents come last, as in Excel's Window menu;
the app's one window is kept out of AppKit's own list for that menu, which
had shown it once more under the active document's title, and since muda
places items by position while AppKit adds items of its own, a changed set
of documents replaces the whole submenu rather than editing it in place; Show Formulas moves to Control+` there, as in Excel for
Mac, so the chord does one thing.
Tests: the engine's window commands (id after an index shift, wrap, hidden
windows surviving a close, the last visible window), the ribbon drop-down and
the shortcuts through the UI harness (cycle and wrap, one-window no-ops, scroll
and selection restored, text-box draft committed), the Mac menu's entries and
accelerators, and an AppKit test that reads the NSMenu back after switching,
closing and hiding.

Closing this in favour of #2616–#2619, which landed the window-per-workbook design. Thanks @aiongg for answering the shape question: with New Window putting two windows on one workbook, identifying a window by its document doesn't hold up, and main's window ids now cover what this PR did (Switch Windows, the window commands, settling a cell entry before a switch, the open workbooks in the Mac's Window menu). The one thing left here was cycling with Ctrl+F6 / Ctrl+Tab. With each workbook in its own native window, that's the desktop's job now: Cmd+Grave on macOS, and the window switcher on other desktops. |
This does one small thing: with several workbooks open, the Window menu lists them and lets you switch between them. Nothing more. It is not multi-window support (#162, #171), and it deliberately avoids anything that work would have to undo.
Today several workbooks can be open in GridCraft's one window, but nothing in the interface moved between them: the Mac's Window menu had New Window and the sheet keys only, the ribbon's View › Window group had no Switch Windows, and the one route was
window.activate {index}over the control channel. On the Mac the Window menu also showed the app's single window as an entry titled after the active document, always checked, which looked like a second document list. The part I'd like a second opinion on is the shape, since the point was to be plug-and-play for whoever does the real multi-window work: the engine identifies a window by its document, not by its position, and
window.list,window.activate {id},window.nextandwindow.previousare meant to stay the one API. A build that gives each workbook its own native window maps those windows to the same ids, and the Mac menu's document list then simply becomes macOS's own window list. If that shape is wrong for where you want to take windows, I'd rather hear it now than have this be a headache later.Summary
window.list(andview.switchWindows) report id, index, title, path, dirty, active, hidden;window.activatetakes an id or an index and unhides;window.next/window.previouscycle the visible windows and wrap; hidden windows are kept by document, hiding the last visible one is refused, and closing a document never leaves a hidden window active. Why by document: a window-per-workbook implementation maps its native windows to the same ids and keeps
window.*as the one API; the Window menu's document list then becomes macOS's own window list. The pieces are kept apart for that: a purewindow_entriesfunction feeds the Mac menu, the ribbon readswindow.list, and the engine owns the identity.Tests: the engine's window commands (activate by id after an index shift, next/previous wrap and skip hidden windows, a hidden window surviving another document's close, the last visible window refused, hostile ids); the ribbon drop-down and the four shortcuts through the UI harness (cycle and wrap, on Linux/Windows and Mac modifiers, one-window no-ops without a message, scroll and selection restored, a cell entry and a text-box draft committed by a switch from the menu and from the shortcuts, a refused entry stopping the switch with its own message, a later error still shown over an earlier message box); the Mac menu's entries, ids and accelerators, plus an AppKit test that reads the NSMenu back from NSApp after switching, retitling, closing and hiding, checking the end of the menu so that items macOS appends of its own would not disturb it (the headless NSApp appends none, so that part is not exercised).
Docs:
docs/ui-parity.md(new row, the shortcut table),docs/hardware-parity.md,docs/gaps.md,ROADMAP.md.A later cold review of the diff found that the four shortcuts had done nothing while a cell or text box was being edited: the grid's keyboard handler stands back for the editor, and the commit-then-switch path was reached only from the menus and the control channel. They now go through there as well, with tests. The same review found that my change to the alert helper, meant to keep a cell entry's own message over the refusal, had also kept any message box over a later error; that is now handled only where the refusal arises.
On my Mac every gate step passes except
header_autofit::table_filter_autofit_works_through_command_and_header_double_click, which fails on current main as well (macOS font metrics, from #1320).
