…se in the title bar

For host pages embedding GridCraft (?host=parent):

  • gridcraft:cmd {id, params?} runs engine commands like ribbon buttons and answers gridcraft:response {ok, value}
  • gridcraft:docClosed fires when the host-opened workbook closes (matched by its full name — documents get titled with the complete file name), because the app itself always keeps a blank workbook around
  • a Close button next to Save in the title bar (file.close handles unsaved changes first, like the File menu does)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Close button beside Save. Closing commits pending edits first and is canceled if the edit cannot be committed.
    • Embedded hosts can open workbooks, send commands, and receive success or error responses. Workbooks opened by a host trigger a notification when closed.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Host commands now run after workbook opens in the same frame. Invalid command parameters and queue-limit violations return error responses; successful commands apply pending save receipts before responding.
    • Host bridge initialization rejects empty or wildcard origins.

Walkthrough

The web host bridge queues validated commands, runs them through the app, and returns success or failure responses. It tracks host-opened workbooks and reports when one is no longer present. The title bar adds a Close button that runs file.close after a successful edit commit.

Changes: Host Bridge Integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate and queue host messages
apps/gridcraft-web/src/host.rs
The bridge rejects empty, "null", and "*" origins. It records the host-opened workbook and queues valid commands, with limits on parameter size, command count, and aggregate queued parameter text.
Run commands and return responses
apps/gridcraft-web/src/host.rs, apps/gridcraft-web/src/web.rs
The web shell parses command parameters, commits active edits before host close commands, runs commands through the app, applies save receipts after successful commands, and returns responses. Bridge sync reports when the tracked workbook is absent.
Close workbook from the ribbon
crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs
The title bar adds a Close button. It runs file.close only after the active edit commits successfully.

  • storytold/gridcraft#1904: Both changes use file.close for workbook closing, with this change adding web-host and title-bar paths.
  • storytold/gridcraft#2325: That PR adds stable document IDs for document-aware closing; this change tracks the host workbook by title or filename.

Suggested reviewers: claude

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review 17da1

Host-driven Save can write a workbook without the cell edit that is still being typed. Commands sent right before an open can be applied to the wrong workbook. The "document closed" notification can also fire early or be lost after a rename or failed open. These are bounded to embedded host-bridge use, but they should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merge.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 17da1

The existing same-origin parent restriction remains intact. However, queued operations can affect a different workbook than intended, and closure notifications can fire while a workbook remains open. These issues weaken document ownership and failure containment in embedded editing sessions.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Open messages and commands enter separate queues, and every queued open is processed before any command. A burst containing open(A), command(C), open(B) can therefore execute C against B rather than A. Commands carry no document identity to detect this mismatch, so edits, saves, exports, or closes can cross the intended workbook ownership boundary. Applying save receipts immediately after execution does not correct the selected document.
  • Medium · reliability · observed: The bridge records a filename before opening succeeds and emits docClosed whenever that filename is absent, rather than observing an opened document transition to closed. A successful .xls, .xlsb, or .ods import receives an “(imported).xlsx” title and no path, so the new notification can report closure while that document remains open. Password-pending opens can also trigger the notification before opening completes. A parent using this signal to end an editing session can consequently act on an incorrect terminal state.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The established command scope includes documents loaded in the embedded session, their workbook contents, application UI state, and preferences persisted to browser local storage. The bridge does not bind a request to one workbook; document-switching commands can change the active target.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Before either open or command dispatch, the listener requires the iframe’s own origin and the exact parent Window as message source. Those checks existed in the base. The head additionally rejects empty, null, and wildcard origins during bridge initialization, and outgoing messages target the configured origin.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new command queue limits parameters to 1 MiB per request, 256 pending commands, and 8 MiB of aggregate pending parameter text. Invalid parameter types, excessive queue usage, and malformed JSON receive failure responses. These controls bound queued parameter load but do not provide document identity or cross-queue ordering.
  • observed — Save receipts represent successful message handoff, not acknowledgement of durable parent storage. That ownership contract predates this PR: the parent stores the bytes and reports storage failures itself. The head improves receipt timing by applying receipts before successful command responses.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Use a shared ordered host-operation stream and explicit document identity or open-generation binding, so later opens cannot silently retarget previously received commands.
  • proposed — Register lifecycle ownership only after an open succeeds, retain the resulting stable document identity, and distinguish pending or failed opens from actual closure. Emit docClosed from that document’s terminal transition rather than filename absence.

Track the host document by stable identity, not title.

Host imports have path == None. In host mode, Save As can use the no-picker file.saveBytes fallback and send a generated .xlsx name through services.download. sync then overwrites the pathless document title and checks only the original host name. It can send gridcraft:docClosed while the workbook remains open, then clear the state needed for the real close notification.

Store a stable document identity when opening the workbook and use it for closure tracking. Do not use the mutable title or path basename.

Track the actual opened document after file.open succeeds.

gridcraft:open stores the raw name before file.open runs. An .xls, .xlsb, or .ods payload can be imported with a title such as foo (imported).xlsx, so Bridge::sync can report gridcraft:docClosed in the same frame. If file.open fails, no document is added and the same false event can occur. The event also clears host_doc, so the real close is not reported later.

Record the host document only after a successful file.open, using the returned document title or a stable document identity.

Thanks for the review! Status of the findings:

Fixed and pushed (35867e9d):

  • web.rs:119 command/open ordering: WebShell::logic now runs app.logic (which drains the inbox holding gridcraft:open) before the host command loop — a command sent right after an open no longer acts on the previous workbook. Commands still run in the same frame.
  • web.rs:118 malformed params JSON now answers an error response and skips the run instead of substituting Null and reporting success for a command that ran unconfigured.

Acknowledged — follow-up PR:

  • host.rs:135/172 docClosed matching by mutable title: a fair catch — a Save As that renames the pathless workbook (or a failed open) can produce a false gridcraft:docClosed. A stable document identity from the engine's open path would fix this properly; the web layer has no document id to track today. Happy to send that as a follow-up.

@coderabbitai Both inline comments from the latest review are addressed in 02a78d95.

file.close must not drop an open cell editor (web.rs:159). The command loop now commits the active edit with commit_edit(0, 0, false, false) before running a host-issued file.close — the same gate the File menu uses (backstage.rs) — and refuses the close with an error response when the edit won't commit (e.g. an invalid formula), leaving the workbook open so the user can fix it and the host hears why.

Save receipts must bind to the document that was saved (web.rs:147). Bridge::sync's receipt application moved into Bridge::apply_receipts, and the command loop calls it right after each command returns — while the saved workbook is still the active document — so a queued gridcraft:open later in the same burst can no longer receive the previous document's receipt. sync keeps applying UI-path saves, where the active document doesn't move in between.

Verified: smoke run against the rebuilt --no-sri web build (headless Chrome) — ready → open test.xlsx → host file.close → response → docClosed, green.

@alexeyvolkoff Thanks. I checked the current code. Both changes address the reported concerns:

  • Host-issued file.close commits the active edit first. If the commit fails, it returns an error without running the close command.
  • Successful host commands apply save receipts before the next command runs. Bridge::sync still handles UI save receipts.

Your reported smoke run covers the normal close path. For regression coverage, also check an invalid-formula close and a save followed by an open in the same message burst. I did not run those checks.

The mutable-title gridcraft:docClosed issue remains a separate follow-up.

@coderabbitai Both regression scenarios you asked for are now covered by the headless harness (Puppeteer + real mouse/keyboard input, --no-sri web build) and pass on the current head 02a78d95:

  1. Invalid formula + close. Click a grid cell, type =1+ (editor open with a syntax error), send host file.close → response ok=false — "the cell edit doesn't commit; fix or cancel it before closing" — and no docClosed; the workbook stays open. After clearing the edit the close goes through normally.
  2. Save → new burst. Commit 42 (workbook dirty), then send file.save and file.new back-to-back in one batch → gridcraft:save test.xlsx 5787 B arrives, then dirty:false: the receipt landed on the saved workbook, not on the new Book1.

Negative controls (each fix reverted alone, rebuilt, re-run): without the commit gate the close succeeds and silently drops the edit (docClosed fires instead of the refusal); without apply_receipts in the command loop dirty stays true and dirty:false never arrives after the burst. The harness fails exactly on the assertion each fix is for — so the coverage is real, not incidental.

Full run assertions: {refusedClose: true, noCloseOnInvalid: true, dirtyFalseAfterBurst: true, docClosed: true}.

@alexeyvolkoff Thanks for the detailed results. The reported checks cover both regression behaviors:

  • An invalid cell edit blocks file.close, returns an error, and leaves the workbook open without docClosed.
  • A file.save → file.new burst applies the save receipt to the saved workbook.

The negative controls show that each check detects the regression it targets. This satisfies the additional regression coverage I requested. I have not independently rerun the harness.

The mutable-title gridcraft:docClosed issue remains a separate follow-up.

Keep host commands and opens in the order the parent sent them.

Host gridcraft:open messages wait in the shared inbox, and SheetApp::logic opens them before WebShell::logic drains host commands. A command that the parent sends before an open therefore runs after the new workbook is active. For example, a cell.set sent for workbook A, followed by an open of workbook B before the next frame, can write into B.

Commands and opens use separate queues, so their relative order is lost. Tag each entry with a sequence number when it is queued, then process both queues in sequence order within the frame. This change spans host.rs, web.rs, and the inbox handling in crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, so it needs a design decision. A localized diff is not safe to propose yet.

Commit the active edit before host file.save.

The host command path commits the active cell edit only for file.close. SheetApp::run does not commit it for file.save; it only stores view state before calling self.session.run(id, params). A successful host save can therefore omit the current edit and return a receipt for stale workbook bytes.

…ceipts to the saved document (CodeRabbit review storytold#1854)

A host-issued file.close ran the engine command directly while a cell
editor was open, so an uncommitted edit was lost. The command loop now
commits it first, exactly like the File menu does (backstage), and
refuses the close when the edit won't commit (e.g. an invalid formula) —
the host hears why and the workbook stays open.

Save receipts (a workbook handed to the parent counts as saved) were
applied in Bridge::sync to whichever document was active when the frame
synced. A queued gridcraft:open later in the same burst could make
another document active first, marking the wrong one saved. The command
loop now applies receipts right after each command returns, while its
document is still the active one; sync keeps applying UI-path saves,
where the active document doesn't move in between.

@coderabbitai Two of the three findings are fixed in 19ca4e6f:

  • Commit the active edit before host file.save (your suggested diff). The command loop now commits via commit_edit(0, 0, false, false) before running a host file.save, exactly like the File menu and the existing file.close gate; if the edit doesn't commit (e.g. an invalid formula) the save is refused with an error response and the workbook stays open for the user to fix it.
  • Bounded identifiers + params pre-check: MAX_ID_BYTES (1024) for id/requestId, the JS string length is checked before as_string(), and identifier bytes count toward the pending queue budget alongside params bytes.

The send-order finding (host commands vs. gridcraft:open losing their relative order) is the 🏗️ Heavy lift: preserving order needs a shared sequence across host.rs, web.rs and the shared inbox in crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs (where opens are drained inside SheetApp::logic). Our current drain queued opens before host commands (from the earlier review round) guarantees opens complete first, which fixes the common case but not the reverse ordering. I'm deferring the cross-crate refactor to a dedicated follow-up rather than hacking it in here — happy to take it on next if you'd like a concrete proposal.

Also rebased onto origin/main (upstream M2.9 security work): one conflict in crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs, resolved by keeping the title-bar Close button and the upstream cmd::can_undo/can_redo availability checks.

Smoke (headless Chrome, --no-sri): invalid-formula close → refused + docClosed absent; valid edit → dirty; burst save+new → dirty:false; close of both books → docClosed. All assertions green.

@alexeyvolkoff I inspected 19ca4e6. The host file.save commit gate is present. A failed commit returns an error before app.run. The rebase also preserves the Close button and the can_undo/can_redo checks.

The input-bounds change still needs corrections:

  • Missing binding: In apps/gridcraft-web/src/host.rs, Line 268 and Line 273 use queued_id_bytes, but Bridge::listen does not bind it. This is a WASM compile blocker. Add the binding beside queued_bytes:
    let queued_id_bytes = self.queued_id_bytes.clone();
  • Identifiers still allocate before validation: Line 227 and Line 234 call string(), which calls as_string(). The 1024-byte checks run afterward. Apply the JavaScript-length pre-check to both identifiers before conversion, then retain the UTF-8 byte check. Do not echo an oversized requestId in the rejection response.
  • The queue budget is separate, not combined: Line 267–268 check parameter bytes and identifier bytes independently against 8 MiB. If 8 MiB is the total text budget, check the combined total.

These allocation checks also follow the supplied repository guidance to cap input-sized allocations.

I understand the decision to defer the cross-crate ordering refactor. The send-order finding remains unresolved: a command sent before gridcraft:open can still run against the newly opened workbook. Would you like a GitHub follow-up issue for this, with acceptance checks for both message orders?

I did not build or rerun the harness. After the corrections, please rerun the WASM check against this exact revision. Also check invalid formula → host file.save: expect ok:false and no gridcraft:save. The listed smoke results cover invalid-formula close, but do not explicitly cover save refusal.

…se in the title bar

For host pages embedding GridCraft (?host=parent):
- gridcraft:cmd {id, params?} runs engine commands like ribbon buttons and
  answers gridcraft:response {ok, value}
- gridcraft:docClosed fires when the host-opened workbook closes (matched by
its full name — documents get titled with the complete file name), because
the app itself always keeps a blank workbook around
- a Close button next to Save in the title bar (file.close handles unsaved
changes first, like the File menu does)
… (CodeRabbit review)

A gridcraft:open followed by a gridcraft:cmd in the same burst ran the
command against the previous workbook: opens wait in the inbox that
app.logic drains, and the command loop ran first. The app now runs first
and commands still execute in the same frame.

Malformed params JSON used to fall back to Null and run the command
without its parameters (a success response for a command the host meant
to configure); it now answers an error and skips the run.

Document-identity tracking for docClosed (mutable title / failed opens)
left for a follow-up: it needs a stable id from the open path.

…bounded queue

Aligns gridcraft:response with the family protocol the WordCraft (storytold#2919) and
DeckCraft (storytold#983) bridges use — the same alignment chief-nerd proposes for the
GridCraft bridge in storytold#2360:

- gridcraft:response is { id, requestId?, ok, value? } or
{ id, requestId?, ok: false, error }, so multi-command hosts can match replies.
- deckcraft:cmd layout matched on receive: absen/null params mean {};
a params that is not a string, params over 1 MiB, a missing id, and commands
beyond the queue bounds (256 commands / 8 MiB of params text) are answered
at once with ok:false instead of being dropped or run unvalidated.
