i18n(ja): Japanese menus, ribbon and status bar (first step) - #1119
An interface-language system, ported from the sibling Crafting Apps (WordCraft, PdfCraft:
English strings are the keys, one TSV catalog per language). The UI is still written in English;
what is drawn goes through tl! / i18n::t, so a string without a translation simply shows in
English and coverage can grow one row at a time. Command ids, the presentation, file names, the
CLI, MCP and the control channel never see translated text.
UiState.language is saved with the other UI state (ui.json): auto (the default) follows the
operating system — Windows display language, macOS preferred languages, LANG/LC_* elsewhere,
the browser on the web — and en/ja pick a catalog by hand. Preferences ▸ Interface language
has the picker; ui.language {value} is the command for tests and the control channel.
crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/ja.tsv: 554 entries, our own wording (clean-room: not copied from
another product's UI).
Translated in this first step: the menus (the menu tree and the command palette, whose search
matches English and Japanese queries), ribbon tabs including the contextual ones, ribbon large and
small buttons, check items, icon toggles, split buttons, tooltips, in-ribbon popup items, the
status bar (slide counter, view buttons), the Quick Access Toolbar menus, the File tab's navigation
and headings, dialog titles, the common dialog buttons (OK / Cancel / Done) and the whole
Preferences dialog.
Not translated yet (all still drawn in English through the fallback): dialog bodies other than
Preferences (Font, Paragraph, Insert Table, Format Shape, …), most status messages and error
strings produced by engine commands, help text, the File tab's page contents, toasts and credits.
That is the next step; the catalog format and the LANGUAGES registry are ready for it.
Catalog format and tests
English source<TAB>translation, # comments, escapes \n, \t, \\. {name} placeholders
must match the source (translators may reorder them) and a trailing … must match. A malformed
line or a duplicate key is skipped and reported once, so a bad translation never breaks the UI;
the bundled catalogs must parse with zero errors.
Tests cover: system-locale → language resolution (macOS/Windows/Unix tags, C/POSIX, unsupported
tags, preferred-order), the setting's normalization and fallback to auto, English fallback for
untranslated strings, per-thread current language, placeholder filling, malformed catalog lines,
the bundled catalog being well-formed, and four egui_kittest cases that switch the interface to
Japanese and see the Japanese ribbon/Preferences while the English labels are gone, reject a
hostile language value, and fall back to auto from a damaged saved setting.
Verification
Local run with CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2 RUST_TEST_THREADS=2:
cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui: 231 passed, 0 failed, 4 ignored (235 run). The 15 new
tests are 11 catalog/i18n tests and 4 kittest language tests; the 4 ignored ones are the
pre-existing soak tests.
Headless verification of what is drawn: a 1600×1000 egui_kittest wgpu render of the window in
Japanese shows the ribbon tabs, the ribbon buttons, the menu-palette tooltips, the status bar
(スライド 1 / 1, ノート, コメント) and the notes hint in Japanese, with real CJK glyphs; the
English render is unchanged. (The renderer check is a temporary local test, not committed.)
A build without craft-fonts (such as a plain cargo run in this checkout) borrows an installed
CJK face for the interface's own catalog text through the existing uifonts fallback, so the
Japanese labels are not drawn as boxes; with craft-fonts the embedded BIZ UDPGothic covers them.
Adding a language
Copy the header of ja.tsv, translate from the meaning of the English text (clean-room), add one
row to LANGUAGES in crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/mod.rs; the Preferences dropdown, the
system-language match and the catalog tests pick it up from there.
Docs
docs/localization-parity.md (Japanese row: 554 of ~1,050 strings, 53 %; honest scope note), ROADMAP.md (languages table, progress log and revision history), docs/gaps.md and docs/roadmap.md. Existing revision/progress rows keep their original dates.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added partial Japanese interface support for menus, ribbon controls, the status bar, command labels, the command palette, and Preferences.
Added an Interface language setting for English, Japanese, or automatic system-language selection. Changes apply immediately, and Cancel restores the previous selection.
Added a command for changing the interface language. The command palette searches and displays labels in the selected language.
Known Limitations
Some dialog content, File-tab pages, tooltips, and help text remain in English.
Port the sibling Crafting Apps' interface-catalog system: English strings
are the keys, one TSV catalog per language, and a language setting
(auto | en | ja) saved with the other UI state. `auto` follows the
operating system (the Windows display language, macOS preferred
languages, LANG/LC_* on Unix, the browser on the web). Untranslated
strings draw in English, so command ids, the presentation, file names,
the CLI/MCP and the control channel are untouched, and coverage can grow
one row at a time.
Drawn in Japanese in this step: the menu tree, the command palette (its
search matches English and Japanese queries), ribbon tabs including the
contextual ones, large and small ribbon buttons, check items, icon
toggles, split buttons, tooltips, in-ribbon popups, the status bar, the
Quick Access Toolbar menus, the File tab's navigation and headings,
dialog titles, the common dialog buttons (OK / Cancel / Done) and the
whole Preferences dialog, which also gains the Interface language picker
(Cancel and Esc put the opening language back). Other dialog bodies,
engine status messages and errors, help text, the File tab's page
contents, toasts and credits still show English.
A build without craft-fonts now borrows an installed CJK face for the
interface's own catalog text, so Japanese labels are not drawn as boxes;
the embedded BIZ UDPGothic covers them when craft-fonts is present.
Tests: catalog format (duplicate keys, empty translations, columns,
escape rules, placeholders, ellipsis), system-locale resolution, the
setting's normalization and fallback, English fallback, per-thread
current language, placeholder filling, malformed lines, the bundled
catalog's well-formedness, plus kittest cases that switch to Japanese
and see the ribbon and Preferences redrawn while the English labels are
gone, reject a hostile setting and fall back from a damaged one.
Verified locally (CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2, RUST_TEST_THREADS=2): cargo test
-p deckcraft-ui-egui 231 passed, 4 ignored (235 run; 11 new i18n and 4
new language tests); clippy -p deckcraft-ui-egui -p deckcraft-engine
--all-targets -D warnings clean; cargo fmt --all -- --check clean; a
headless wgpu render of the 1600x1000 Japanese UI shows the ribbon,
status bar and notes hint in Japanese with real CJK glyphs (the English
render is unchanged).

Merge Risk: Low · previous review 1a1e7
Japanese-language users cannot select English from Preferences and may hear mixed-language split-button names. The command provides a language-setting workaround, so these are bounded issues to address before or shortly after merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 1a1e7
The language choice is restricted to bundled translations, and the inspected behavior does not grant additional permissions. No material security defect was identified; remaining uncertainty concerns broader integration and platform behavior.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The traced new command affects the application's language preference and active UI language, not engine authority. Shared rendering broadens its visible effect across controls, while inspected consumers retain literal action IDs and parameters.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Existing control callers gain access to ui.language, but its handler validates before mutation and only changes language state. Menu, palette and QAT execution use command IDs independently of localized display labels, preserving the inspected presentation-to-dispatch boundary.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The inspected transition contains invalid input before mutation and restores language through the same command on Preferences cancellation. Thread-local activation and per-pass resets limit cross-thread interference. Same-thread multi-context interleaving and language-specific desktop restart behavior remain incompletely evidenced, without an identified security consequence.

Escape the pipes in the Interface language options in the ROADMAP.md
progress log and the localization revision history, so both rows keep
the documented columns.
Update docs/roadmap.md's status line to 2026-10-21 and add its
revision-history entry for the string-catalog milestone, as the
progress-docs rule asks of every touched doc.
docs/localization-parity.md:68 — unescaped pipes split the three-column revision row; escaped as auto \| English \| 日本語, options kept in one cell (MD056).
docs/roadmap.md:37 — the touched doc's status line and revision history were stale: Last updated → 2026-10-21 with a matching minor entry (AGENTS.md §7).
ROADMAP.md:136 — same unescaped-pipe problem in the two-column progress-log row; escaped, columns preserved.
Nothing else changed: the docs' 554 count matches translated_strings() (554 ja.tsv entries) and the bundled-catalog check stays a > 100 lower bound. cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui --lib is 231 passed, 4 ignored; cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy -D warnings clean.
Conflicts resolved by keeping both sides:
- Cargo.toml: main's wasm-safe chrono base (`std`, clock requested per-crate in
crates/text) and the branch's new sys-locale dependency.
Return to Preferences after closing AutoCorrect Options.
The Preferences snapshot is stored in d.params, but Dialog::new("autocorrect") replaces it with Value::Null. Closing AutoCorrect therefore skips restore_preferences and leaves a changed interface language active, even when the user cancels the child dialog. Preserve the snapshot through the existing returnParams path.

Include English in the Preferences language picker.
When the system language is Japanese, Automatic resolves to Japanese. The picker lists Automatic and Japanese, but the Lang::EN filter removes English. The ui.language command accepts en, but Preferences does not expose it. This is a minor workflow limitation because the command remains a workaround.

Translate split-button arrow names with their labels.
These helpers translate the base label, but the arrow names still append the literal " options". For example, a translated Paste button can expose "貼り付け options" to a screen reader. Use a translated label template for the arrow names in big_button_ex, small_button_named, and color_split.

What this adds
An interface-language system, ported from the sibling Crafting Apps (WordCraft, PdfCraft:
English strings are the keys, one TSV catalog per language). The UI is still written in English;
what is drawn goes through
tl!/i18n::t, so a string without a translation simply shows inEnglish and coverage can grow one row at a time. Command ids, the presentation, file names, the
CLI, MCP and the control channel never see translated text.
UiState.languageis saved with the other UI state (ui.json):auto(the default) follows theoperating system — Windows display language, macOS preferred languages,
LANG/LC_*elsewhere,the browser on the web — and
en/japick a catalog by hand. Preferences ▸ Interface languagehas the picker;
ui.language {value}is the command for tests and the control channel.crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/ja.tsv: 554 entries, our own wording (clean-room: not copied fromanother product's UI).
That is the next step; the catalog format and the
LANGUAGESregistry are ready for it.Catalog format and tests
English source<TAB>translation,#comments, escapes\n,\t,\\.{name}placeholdersmust match the source (translators may reorder them) and a trailing
…must match. A malformedline or a duplicate key is skipped and reported once, so a bad translation never breaks the UI;
the bundled catalogs must parse with zero errors.
Tests cover: system-locale → language resolution (macOS/Windows/Unix tags,
C/POSIX, unsupportedtags, preferred-order), the setting's normalization and fallback to
auto, English fallback foruntranslated strings, per-thread current language, placeholder filling, malformed catalog lines,
the bundled catalog being well-formed, and four
