i18n(ja): dialogs and messages (second step) - #1125
Stacked on #1119 (branch i18n/ja). This branch is based on that branch, not on main, so the PR shows #1119's commit as well as this one; the second step is the last commit (i18n(ja): dialogs and messages, second step). Merge #1119 first and this branch can be rebased onto main (or retargeted) unchanged — only the last commit is new here.
The first step translated the menus, ribbon, status bar, command palette and Preferences (554 entries) and left the dialog bodies and the messages around them in English. This step adds 323 more entries (877 of ~1,050 strings, 84%):
the dialog bodies — Insert Table, Slide Size, Font, Paragraph, Tabs, Header & Footer, Hyperlink, Set Up Show, Zoom, Export, Date and Time, Spelling, Photo Album, theme colours and fonts, Accessibility Checker, AutoCorrect, chart data, SmartArt, Symbol, Equation, Language, Custom Shows, About and Credits — including their headings, explanations and checkboxes;
their field labels and error/status messages — e.g. "Font size must be a number", "Line spacing must be a number", "No pictures yet", "That picture is larger than 32 MB", "A photo album holds at most 48 pictures or text boxes", "There are no unsaved presentations to recover", "Copied the path";
the Format and selection panes, the File tab's page contents and headings, the backstage texts, the About/Credits window and the slide/section context menus.
The shared helpers translate their labels, so the call sites keep their English key (the catalog format is unchanged):
dialogs: field, check, text_row, labeled_text, the choice combo, album_choice and the paragraph line-spacing presets;
backstage: the existing heading, plus dim, arrow_link, tile and the search hint;
every other new string is wrapped in tl!("English") where it is drawn.
Clean-room: the translations are our own wording, not copied from another product's localisation (the catalog header says so).
Tests
New i18n::tests::japanese_covers_the_dialogs_and_messages: pins a sample of the second step (dialog fields, buttons, messages, File-tab texts), the English fallback, and the catalog size (> 800 entries).
The existing catalog tests still pass: every bundled catalog parses without errors (no duplicates, no empty translations, placeholders and trailing ellipses match), and the first step's menu/ribbon/status coverage test is unchanged.
The single failure is pre-existing on the stacked base branch, not this PR: replacefonts_tests::ribbon_button_opens_the_dialog_and_replaces. i18n/ja is three commits behind main and predates main's 320e3a9 "one Editing group on Home", which moved Replace Fonts… into reach at 1400 px (the test's window width); the button is clipped on the base branch, so the click does not open the dialog. Stashing this PR's changes reproduces the identical failure on i18n/ja; every other test passes, and main already carries the fix, so it resolves itself when #1119 rebases/merges.
Remaining (not in this PR)
Some tooltips and help text, and the engine's status/error messages, which are drawn verbatim from the engine without a catalog lookup.
Data-table labels that are proper nouns or samples stay English: language names, date-format samples, theme names, photo-album layout labels and bullet/symbol glyph samples.
Docs
docs/localization-parity.md (ja row: 877 of ~1,050, 84%; intro; revision history), docs/gaps.md and ROADMAP.md (header, progress log, revision history), dated 2026-10-22; the earlier revision rows keep their dates.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added Japanese interface localization across menus, ribbon controls, dialogs, panes, status areas, and common messages, covering about 84% of the interface. Some tooltips and help content remain in English.
Added an interface-language setting to choose Japanese or follow the system language. Changes apply immediately and are saved between sessions.
Command search recognizes and displays localized labels.
Added Japanese text support in interface font selection.
Documentation
Updated localization progress, language availability, roadmap information, and remaining untranslated content.
Port the sibling Crafting Apps' interface-catalog system: English strings
are the keys, one TSV catalog per language, and a language setting
(auto | en | ja) saved with the other UI state. `auto` follows the
operating system (the Windows display language, macOS preferred
languages, LANG/LC_* on Unix, the browser on the web). Untranslated
strings draw in English, so command ids, the presentation, file names,
the CLI/MCP and the control channel are untouched, and coverage can grow
one row at a time.
Drawn in Japanese in this step: the menu tree, the command palette (its
search matches English and Japanese queries), ribbon tabs including the
contextual ones, large and small ribbon buttons, check items, icon
toggles, split buttons, tooltips, in-ribbon popups, the status bar, the
Quick Access Toolbar menus, the File tab's navigation and headings,
dialog titles, the common dialog buttons (OK / Cancel / Done) and the
whole Preferences dialog, which also gains the Interface language picker
(Cancel and Esc put the opening language back). Other dialog bodies,
engine status messages and errors, help text, the File tab's page
contents, toasts and credits still show English.
A build without craft-fonts now borrows an installed CJK face for the
interface's own catalog text, so Japanese labels are not drawn as boxes;
the embedded BIZ UDPGothic covers them when craft-fonts is present.
Tests: catalog format (duplicate keys, empty translations, columns,
escape rules, placeholders, ellipsis), system-locale resolution, the
setting's normalization and fallback, English fallback, per-thread
current language, placeholder filling, malformed lines, the bundled
catalog's well-formedness, plus kittest cases that switch to Japanese
and see the ribbon and Preferences redrawn while the English labels are
gone, reject a hostile setting and fall back from a damaged one.
Verified locally (CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2, RUST_TEST_THREADS=2): cargo test
-p deckcraft-ui-egui 231 passed, 4 ignored (235 run; 11 new i18n and 4
new language tests); clippy -p deckcraft-ui-egui -p deckcraft-engine
--all-targets -D warnings clean; cargo fmt --all -- --check clean; a
headless wgpu render of the 1600x1000 Japanese UI shows the ribbon,
status bar and notes hint in Japanese with real CJK glyphs (the English
render is unchanged).
Translate the dialog bodies and the messages around them, not just the
menus, ribbon and Preferences: 323 new catalog entries (554 → 877 of
~1,050 strings, 84%).
Drawn in Japanese now, with the interface language set to 日本語:
- the dialog bodies — Insert Table, Slide Size, Font, Paragraph, Tabs,
Header & Footer, Hyperlink, Set Up Show, Zoom, Export, Date and Time,
Spelling, Photo Album, theme colours and fonts, Accessibility Checker,
AutoCorrect, chart data, SmartArt, Symbol, Equation, Language, Custom
Shows, About and Credits — including their headings and explanations;
- their field labels and error/status messages ("Font size must be a
number", "No pictures yet", the photo-album limits, …);
- the Format and selection panes, the File tab's page contents and
headings, the backstage helpers' texts and the About/Credits window.
The shared helpers translate their labels, so call sites keep the English
key: the dialog field, check, text-row and labelled-text rows, the dialog
combo and album choices, the backstage heading (already), dim, arrow link,
tile and search hint, and the paragraph line-spacing presets. New strings
are wrapped in `tl!` where they are drawn; the catalog is validated by the
existing tests (format, placeholders, duplicates) plus a new test that
pins the dialog coverage and the catalog size.
Remaining: some tooltips and help text, the engine's status/error messages
(shown verbatim, no catalog lookup yet), and the data-table labels that
are proper nouns or samples (language names, date formats, theme names,
album layouts, bullet and symbol glyph samples) stay English.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to a39e0
Users whose system language is Japanese cannot select English in Preferences. Opening AutoCorrect can also leave a language change applied without a Preferences Done or Cancel decision. Resolve these selection and restoration issues before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to a39e0
The language setting has a narrow effect on interface rendering and saved preferences. Reviewed inputs are restricted to supported languages and bundled translations, and no new privileged operation was identified. Cross-platform behavior and broader integration coverage remain incomplete.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected new command affects interface-language state and its saved UI preference. Through rendering it can also exercise existing font fallback. Its handler does not select document paths, execute translated command identifiers, or add document/file/network authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Command input, persisted preferences, and detected locale tags are reduced to registered language handles before catalog selection. Catalog parsing checks column shape, nonempty values, duplicate keys, placeholder correspondence, and trailing ellipses; invalid entries are skipped.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The added CJK catalog caller reuses unchanged font-fallback controls: previously inspected characters are tracked, faces are deduplicated, color faces are rejected, individual accepted faces are limited to 128 MiB, and aggregate installed fallback data is limited to 384 MiB.

Explanation
The title "i18n(ja): dialogs and messages (second step)" names the main change: Japanese translations for dialog and message text, as the second localization step. The objectives describe Japanese strings for dialogs, labels, messages, panes, and menus, so the title matches the changeset. The summary covers the wider set of files, so the title is a fair but narrower description of the whole PR.

Add catalog entries and translate the no-match templates before formatting the query.
At crates/ui-egui/src/backstage.rs:596 and :770, the code formats query-specific text before dim calls tl!(text). The catalog uses exact-key lookup, and crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/ja.tsv has no entries for these messages. Japanese users therefore see the English fallback.
Add entries with a query placeholder. Translate each template first, then insert the query value.

Review follow-up on the second Japanese step:
- menu_tree() draws its Help title through tl! like the other top-level
menus; the catalog already carried ヘルプ.
- The backstage "no recent presentations" and "no themes or templates"
messages are looked up as {query} templates and filled afterwards,
instead of formatting English and then looking up the result (which
never matches the exact-key catalog). The Japanese catalog gains both
templates (877 → 879 entries).
- The paragraph dialog's line-spacing items translate their labels before
the selected-item comparison and the drawn text, so the current preset
is marked in Japanese too.
- The catalog test now requires at least the current 879 entries, and
pins the two new message templates.
- The status headers, language tables, gap list and revision histories in
ROADMAP.md, docs/gaps.md and docs/localization-parity.md carry the
second step, and the Interface language selector's pipes are escaped in
the Markdown tables.
Addressed in 070bc9f — all 8 actionable items plus the nitpick were still valid.
backstage.rs: the query was interpolated before the catalog lookup, so the message never matched an entry. Both messages are {query} templates translated with tl! and filled with i18n::fmt (two catalog entries added).
dialogs.rs:3058: line_preset_label is translated while the tuple label was English — translate once, then compare and draw.
menus.rs:303: tl!("Help") (the catalog already had Help → ヘルプ).
docs/gaps.md, docs/localization-parity.md, ROADMAP.md: both now describe this as the second step with 879 entries; the two pre-existing | lines in tables are escaped.
i18n/tests.rs: lower bound >= 879 instead of exact equality. 877 would have been stale here — the backstage.rs fix adds two entries, and the two templates are asserted too.
cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui --lib is 232 passed, 0 failed; the i18n:: group is 12 passed. cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy -D warnings are clean.
Conflicts resolved by keeping both sides:
- Cargo.toml: main's wasm-safe chrono base (`std`, clock requested per-crate in
crates/text) and the branch's new sys-locale dependency.
Conflicts resolved by keeping both sides:
- eyedropper.rs: main's `Pick` (colour menu vs Set Transparent Color) decides the
status line; both messages go through the branch's `tl!`.
- lib.rs: main's Play From (`from`, `elapsed`, `"from"` in the reply); the status
line goes through `tl!`.
- panes.rs: main clears the animation-pane pick before a context-menu command; the
labels keep the branch's `tl!`.
- ribbon.rs: main's pointer-picked "Set Transparent Color" (eyedropper) replaces the
colour grid, with its button and hover text passed through `tl!`.
- ROADMAP.md: main's newer header lines and rows kept; the branch's 2026-10-22 and
2026-10-21 rows inserted in date order.

Include English in the interface-language picker.
When auto resolves to Japanese, this filter removes the only English option from Preferences. The ui.language command accepts en, but a user cannot select it in the picker. Show every registered language so users can override the system language.

Preserve the language snapshot when opening AutoCorrect Options.
If a user selects Japanese and then opens AutoCorrect Options, Line 2353 replaces the Preferences dialog and discards its before snapshot. Closing AutoCorrect cannot run the Preferences restoration at Lines 115-117. The language change remains applied without a Preferences Done or Cancel action. Keep the snapshot and restore the Preferences flow when the nested dialog closes.

Review comment at @crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs at line 2333:
Update the AutoCorrect Options navigation flow around the
`app.run("ui.language", ...)` call to preserve the Preferences dialog’s `before`
snapshot when opening the nested dialog, then restore the Preferences flow when
AutoCorrect Options closes so its existing restoration behavior remains
available.

What this adds
Stacked on #1119 (branch
i18n/ja). This branch is based on that branch, not onmain, so the PR shows #1119's commit as well as this one; the second step is the last commit (i18n(ja): dialogs and messages, second step). Merge #1119 first and this branch can be rebased ontomain(or retargeted) unchanged — only the last commit is new here. The first step translated the menus, ribbon, status bar, command palette and Preferences (554 entries) and left the dialog bodies and the messages around them in English. This step adds 323 more entries (877 of ~1,050 strings, 84%):
The shared helpers translate their labels, so the call sites keep their English key (the catalog format is unchanged):
field,check,text_row,labeled_text, thechoicecombo,album_choiceand the paragraph line-spacing presets;heading, plusdim,arrow_link,tileand the search hint;tl!("English")where it is drawn.Clean-room: the translations are our own wording, not copied from another product's localisation (the catalog header says so).
Tests
i18n::tests::japanese_covers_the_dialogs_and_messages: pins a sample of the second step (dialog fields, buttons, messages, File-tab texts), the English fallback, and the catalog size (> 800 entries).Verification (macOS, rustc 1.99.1,
CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2,RUST_TEST_THREADS=2):The single failure is pre-existing on the stacked base branch, not this PR:
replacefonts_tests::ribbon_button_opens_the_dialog_and_replaces.i18n/jais three commits behindmainand predates main's320e3a9"one Editing group on Home", which moved Replace Fonts… into reach at 1400 px (the test's window width); the button is clipped on the base branch, so the click does not open the dialog. Stashing this PR's changes reproduces the identical failure oni18n/ja; every other test passes, andmainalready carries the fix, so it resolves itself when #1119 rebases/merges.Remaining (not in this PR)
