Summary

Adds five new interface catalogs on top of the i18n infrastructure from #34: Russian (ru), Spanish (es), French (fr), Portuguese pt-BR (pt), German (de) — each a complete 1232-key catalog with the same key set and order as uk.tsv (byte-exact parity).

Note: this PR is stacked on #34 (the first commit is that PR's head). Once #34 merges, only the single i18n: add Russian, Spanish, French, Portuguese and German interfaces commit remains.

Changes

  • crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/{ru,es,fr,pt,de}.tsv — five new catalogs (1232 keys each)
  • crates/ui-egui/src/i18n.rs — Language::{Ru,Es,Fr,Pt,De} + labels + locale resolution; per-language plural forms passed at call sites:
    • Ru uses the same one/few/many integer pattern as Uk (1 слайд / 2 слайда / 5 слайдов)
    • Fr keeps the singular for 0 and 1 (0 diapositive)
    • Es/Pt/De use one/other
    • recovered() gained object forms for all five languages
  • dialogs.rs / lib.rs — language code registry (preferences dropdown, app.language command)
  • ribbon.rs / dialogs.rs — count() call sites now pass forms for every language (including grammatical case: genitive after «до»/«en»/«in»)
  • Tests extended to cover all six translated catalogs: literal-scan, metadata coverage, placeholder parity, locale resolution (ru-RU, es-MX, fr_FR.UTF-8, pt-BR, de-AT), plural forms, and the font-coverage test now collects letters from every catalog

Translation notes

  • Terminology follows the localized Microsoft Office 365 UI of each language (ribbon tabs: Главная/Inicio/Accueil/Página Inicial/Start; chart types: Гистограмма с накоплением / Histogramme empilé / Säulen gestapelt; morph → Преобразование/Transformation/Morphen)
  • ru written without Ё (Microsoft convention); brands/formats stay Latin (PPTX, PDF, MCP, SmartArt…)
  • {placeholder} names, order and format specifiers ({:+}, {:02}, {:04.1}) preserved exactly; keys byte-exact including edge whitespace

Testing

  • cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui: 22 passed, 0 failed (incl. all i18n suites for all six catalogs)
  • Standalone catalog validator: 5 × 1232 rows, 0 problems (key/order parity vs uk.tsv, placeholders, duplicates, edge whitespace, letter-set checks)
  • Visual check via DECKCRAFT_I18N_SHOTS (translated_interface_preview): editor/preferences/table rendered in all seven languages; Russian UI verified by eye (ribbon, dialogs, pluralized status bar)

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added interface translations for English, Ukrainian, Russian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and German across the editor, menus, dialogs, and presentation views.
    • The app can follow the system language or use a selected interface language.
    • File-picker labels and default slide placeholder prompts now appear in the selected language.
    • Recovery notices and other status messages are translated and formatted for the selected language.

Five new interface catalogs (1232 keys each, same key set and order as
uk.tsv, byte-exact), registered in the Language enum with per-language
plural forms: Ru uses the Ukrainian one/few/many pattern, Es/Pt/De use
one/other, Fr keeps the singular for 0. Preferences, app.language,
count() call sites and the font/literal/placeholder tests cover all
six translated languages.

Native-speaker pass over es.tsv only. The catalog reads well and the register is consistent (usted throughout). A few rows change the meaning:

Source Current Suggested Why

Bold Flash Destello audaz Destello intenso audaz = daring, not strong
Donut / Doughnut Dona / Anillo Anillo / Anillo same chart, two names

tOGGLE cASE cAMBIAR cASO aLTERNAR mAYÚSCULAS caso isn't letter case

Handout Master, Handouts (n slides per page) Patrón de documentos / Documentos (…) Patrón de folletos / Folletos (…) a handout is a printed leaflet; documentos is any file

Native-speaker review of ru.tsv (I read all 1,232 entries). It's a good catalog: the ribbon, transitions, shapes and chart types use the names Russian PowerPoint users know. A few things worth fixing:

Consistency

  • Edit Alt Text… → Изменить альтернативный текст…, but Alt Text → Замещающий текст. Suggest Изменить замещающий текст….
  • PRs are translated three ways: @{}: {} PRs… → запросов на вытягивание: {}, Merged PRs → Принятые запросы на слияние, PRs → Запросы на слияние. Suggest запросы на слияние everywhere.
  • Tab → Табуляция, while the other key names (Enter, Space, Backspace, Escape) stay as on the keyboard. If it's the key label, Tab.

Wrong meaning

  • Shrink text on overflow → Свернуть текст при переполнении: «свернуть» means collapse/minimize. Suggest Сжимать текст при переполнении.
  • Inspect Presentation / Inspect Shape / Inspect Slide → Данные презентации/фигуры/слайда reads as "presentation data". Suggest Сведения о презентации, Сведения о фигуре, Сведения о слайде.
  • Home → Главный экран ("home screen"). If this is File › Home, Russian Office calls it Главная.
  • Outline → Структура is right for Outline View, but if the same key also labels a shape's outline (next to No Outline → Нет контура, Shape Outline → Контур фигуры), it should read Контур there; worth a context key.

Wording

  • Accessibility Checker / Check Accessibility → Проверка доступности / Проверить доступность. Russian Office calls the feature Проверка читаемости / Проверить читаемость.
  • No accessibility issues found. People with disabilities should not have difficulty reading this document. → suggest Проблем с читаемостью не найдено. У людей с ограниченными возможностями не должно возникнуть трудностей при чтении этой презентации. («людям с инвалидностью» sounds clinical, and it's a presentation, not a document).

Plurals (Russian needs one/few/many, like the slide counter you already handle):

  • {} ({} slides) → {} ({} слайдов) gives «2 слайдов»; {} presentations → {} презентаций gives «1 презентаций».
  • {n} Column{} → {n} Столбец{}: whatever fills the English plural suffix, Russian needs 1 столбец / 2 столбца / 5 столбцов.

Happy to send these as a follow-up PR once #34 and this one land, if that's easier.

- Edit Alt Text → «Изменить замещающий текст…» (consistent with Alt Text)
- PRs → «запросы на слияние» everywhere (was translated three ways)
- Tab stays Latin (it's a key name, like Enter/Space/Backspace)
- Shrink text on overflow → «Сжимать» (was «Свернуть» = collapse)
- Inspect → «Сведения о…» (was «Данные…» = data)
- Home → «Главная» (Russian Office, was «Главный экран»)
- Accessibility → «Проверка читаемости» (Russian Office term)
- Plurals already work via count() in the code (слайд/слайда/слайдов,
  презентацию/презентации/презентаций, столбец/столбца/столбцов)

Thank you for the thorough review! All fixes applied in f8074e1:

  • ✅ Edit Alt Text → «Изменить замещающий текст…»
  • ✅ PRs → «запросы на слияние» consistently
  • ✅ Tab stays Latin (key name)
  • ✅ Shrink text → «Сжимать текст при переполнении»
  • ✅ Inspect → «Сведения о презентации/фигуре/слайде»
  • ✅ Home → «Главная»
  • ✅ Accessibility → «Проверка читаемости» / «Проверить читаемость»
  • ✅ Plurals: these are already handled by count() in the code (Russian one/few/many: слайд/слайда/слайдов, презентацию/презентации/презентаций, столбец/столбца/столбцов) — the TSV entries like {} ({} slides) are catalog keys that go through count(), which formats the correct form per number. The literal {n} Column{} entry is likewise covered by the ribbon's count() call.

Tests: 22 passed, 0 failed.

Hi @pechnikov2026-star, thank you for this PR — having German in DeckCraft is great, and the catalog is already in very good shape!

I'm a native German speaker and read through all of de.tsv. I have a few suggestions, mostly to match the terms German PowerPoint users already know. Please feel free to take or leave any of them:

  • Office terms: Action Button → Interaktive Schaltfläche, Callout → Legende, Emphasis/Exit → Hervorgehoben/Beenden, Increase/Decrease Font Size → Schriftgrad vergrößern/verkleinern, Bring Forward/Send Backward → Ebene nach vorne/Ebene nach hinten, Slide Sorter → Foliensortierung
  • Shapes: arrows as Pfeil: nach unten/links/…, and the Ribbon: shapes as Band: … (they currently say Menüband)
  • Keyboard keys as printed on German keyboards: Strg+, Umschalt+, Esc, Rücktaste, Bild auf/ab (like fr.tsv does)
  • Consistency: the two Discord links use "du", everything else uses "Sie"

I put them in two small commits on top of your branch, in case they're useful to cherry-pick: https://github.com/gthdtasdnm/deckcraft/commits/i18n-de-review (the top two) — or simply git cherry-pick 2862c02 c4a04b4.

I also noticed the branch now conflicts with main after the 0.7.0 release (the new File view and Selection Pane moved some of the translated code). I merged it locally to try it out and translated the new German labels along the way — if it would help, I'm happy to share that, but of course only if you'd like.

(Full disclosure: I used Claude to help me go through the catalog and the merge, and checked the German myself.)

Thanks again for your work on this!

Use the German Office terms (Interaktive Schaltflächen, Legenden,
Hervorgehoben/Beenden, Schriftgrad, Foliensortierung, Ebene nach
vorne/hinten), German keyboard key names (Strg, Umschalt, Esc,
Rücktaste, Bild auf/ab) and the formal "Sie" throughout.

Danke für die Durchsicht! Both commits are cherry-picked onto the branch (c2efcc4, 8e7f165) — the Office terms, the German keyboard keys and the Band/Menüband fix are all in, and the du/Sie split in the Discord links is unified.

And yes please — share your merge with main (0.7.0 File view and Selection Pane) with the new German labels. A branch on your fork or a PR against pechnikov2026-star/i18n-ru-es-fr-pt-de both work; I'll take the German labels from it and carry the new strings into Russian, Spanish, French and Portuguese the same way.

* Rework faux-redaction audit per maintainer review

- Paint-order aware: a rectangle counts as a cover only when painted
strictly after the text (positions from the joined content stream).
- Colour-aware: WCAG contrast between text and cover must be below 3.0,
so page backgrounds, table shading and highlights are not flagged.
- Fail closed: audit_redactions returns Err on undecodable content
streams (decoded_strict) and malformed /Annots; the operator bound is
an error, not a silent truncation.
- Graphics state carries across a page's content streams (one joined
walk); form XObjects still isolate their state at Do.
- Audit-only: the sanitize-for-sharing half is dropped (upstream storytold#162).
- Parity entry marked partial, not shipped.

* Audit: register its layer, add a README, fail closed past 32 nested forms, document what it doesn't check

French catalog review — two consistency issues

I read through fr.tsv as a French speaker, in the same spirit as the German review above. The catalog is in very good shape: no inconsistent translations at all (never the same English label rendered two different ways across 1 231 keys), and no straight quotes left where French uses guillemets.

Two things are worth fixing, both mechanical rather than matters of taste.

1. The apostrophe switches form mid-file

The catalog uses both the typographic ’ and the straight ', and the split is unusually clean:

lines count
’ typographic 33 → 587 54
' straight 619 → 1230 46

There is no overlap — the switch happens once, somewhere between lines 587 and 619, as if the second half came from a different pass. Examples of the straight form: Options d'interligne… (619), Boucler jusqu'à l'arrêt (635), Déplacer le point d'insertion (665), Langue d'interface inconnue (1216).

Either form is defensible — worth noting that pdfcraft's French catalog leans heavily straight (345 vs 27), if cross-tool consistency is a useful tie-breaker. The point is only that one file shouldn't use both.

grep -nP "\w'\w" crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/fr.tsv

2. +Bin and −Bin are spaced differently

line 14: +Bin	+ Intervalle ← space after the sign
line 1231: −Bin	−Intervalle ← no space

A symmetric pair with asymmetric spacing; the source has no space in either, so the first one looks like the slip.

(« Intervalle » for bin is a good call, incidentally — it's the standard histogram term, and pdfcraft left « Bin » untranslated.)

One thing I checked and am not reporting: the catalog uses a regular space before : and ; where French typography wants a non-breaking one (139 lines, none non-breaking). pdfcraft's shipped French catalog does exactly the same — 270 regular, zero non-breaking — so this is house convention, not a defect in this PR.

…six languages

154 new upstream labels translated for uk, ru, es, fr, pt and de; effect-option
labels (Single L/R, Hex L/R/U/D, Particles and Strips) included. theme.rs leads
the UI font chain with the Latin face only when craft-fonts provides one, so
layout no longer depends on the optional latin-manifest.txt.

French review — both points are in, thanks

I checked the catalog after c743482, and both items from my review are
resolved:

  • Apostrophes are now consistent. 54 lines moved from ’ to ', and the
file no longer mixes the two forms — 0 typographic apostrophes left in
fr.tsv. This also lines up with pdfcraft, which is handy for anyone
    reading both catalogs.
  • +Bin / −Bin are symmetric. + Intervalle → +Intervalle; −Bin
was already correct, so the pair now matches the source spacing.

I also read the 174 new keys from the same commit (SmartArt, the galleries and
the motion paths). Nothing to report on the French side: the terminology
follows what French PowerPoint users will recognise, and I found no
inconsistency — still no English label rendered two different ways anywhere in
the catalog.

As far as French goes, this looks good to me.

One mechanical note, outside my review and entirely for you and
@gthdtasdnm to judge:
61 keys carry a \n in the source, and when a
translation drops it wrap_label still splits near the middle, so nothing
breaks. The exception is a translation that is a single word — there the
button cannot wrap and simply gets wide. French has two such cases, both short
(Avancer, Reculer); German has 21, several above 20 characters
(Hintergrundformatvorlagen, Schnellformatvorlagen,
Gliederungsansicht…). I have not looked at the rendered ribbon, so I may
well be worrying about nothing — just flagging the count in case it is useful.

Follow-up on es.tsv, only the rows added in c743482 (the earlier table from my review is still open; nothing here repeats it). Five rows to change, all for consistency with the rest of the catalog:

Source Current Suggested Why
Pick a design for this slide. Ideas are generated on your device. Elige un diseño… en tu dispositivo Elija un diseño… en su dispositivo the sibling row (Pick a look for your slides…) and the whole catalog use usted; this one switched to tú
Ink to Shape: turn drawn lines… Entintar a forma: … Tinta a forma: … the button itself is already Tinta a forma (and Tinta a texto, Tinta a matemáticas)
Spring Muelle Resorte the catalog is Latin-American Spanish (agregar, Maní, Frijol); muelle is the peninsular word
Promote / Demote Promover / Degradar Subir de nivel / Bajar de nivel degradar reads as "to degrade"; these are outline levels
Recolor / Recolor Gallery Recolorear / Galería de recoloreado Volver a colorear / Galería de nuevos colores the usual Office wording

Everything else in the new rows reads well (the shape names and Arrow: / Callout: families are consistent).

AI-assisted, native review welcome. Happy to send these as a follow-up PR after this one lands.

Models: Sonnet 5.5

The usted form for the design picker, Tinta a forma for the Ink to
Shape tooltip (the button already reads Tinta a forma), Resorte for
the Latin-American Spring, Subir/Bajar de nivel for Promote/Demote
(degradar reads as degrade), and the Office Volver a colorear /
Galería de nuevos colores wording.

📝 Walkthrough

The application adds interface-language selection for English, Ukrainian, Russian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and German. It detects system locale, translates UI text and editor placeholder prompts, and retains English fallbacks. Existing commands and editing behavior remain unchanged.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to cb9ec

Some translated controls display English or inconsistent text, and an unsupported saved language can cause other UI preferences to be lost. These bounded issues can be fixed before merge or accepted with a follow-up.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to cb9ec

The examined changes remain limited to interface language and rendering, preserving presentation content and custom text. External integration compatibility remains uncertain, but no material security regression was established.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The examined new input paths affect application UI preferences and editor display. They do not establish broader tenant, service, credential, or data-store authority: host locale selects embedded text, while presentation placeholder kinds select renderer text rather than executable callbacks.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — No new code-execution or external-resource access path was identified through localized prompts. The callback is selected by application code, its localized implementation performs text lookup, and document-controlled placeholder kinds do not choose executable implementations.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The language command validates accepted values before updating the preference. Inspected tests verify that invalid values retain the previous preference and that successful language changes leave document JSON unchanged, supporting separation of UI state from document ownership.

¡Gracias, diegozpy! All five rows from the follow-up are applied and pushed (cb9ec12):

  • Elige → Elija (usted, consistent with the catalog)
  • Entintar → Tinta a forma (the button already reads Tinta a forma)
  • Muelle → Resorte (Latin-American, like agregar/Maní/Frijol)
  • Promover/Degradar → Subir/Bajar de nivel (outline levels, not degrade)
  • Recolorear → Volver a colorear / Galería de nuevos colores (Office wording)

The earlier review table is still on our list — the branch has grown since (the 0.7.0 merge brought 174 new keys across six languages, including the Spanish ones you just checked), so both tables will land together.

Translate the visible path-direction choices.

When a user selects a translated interface, these buttons still display English labels such as “top left”. The changed call translates only the hover text. Display the translation of l, or provide translated short labels for the buttons. The French catalog already contains translations for the full direction labels. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

🌐 Web query:

site:serde.rs #[serde(other)] externally tagged enum fallback

💡 Result:

`#[serde(other)]` is **not supported as a fallback for externally tagged enums**. Serde’s attribute docs limit it to a **unit variant in an internally or adjacently tagged enum**. ([serde.rs](https://serde.rs/variant-attrs.html?utm_source=openai))

For an externally tagged enum, the variant name is the outer key (for example, `{"Request": {...}}`). To handle unknown variant names, use a custom `Deserialize` implementation or another suitable approach; `#[serde(other)]` won’t provide that fallback. ([serde.rs](https://serde.rs/enum-representations.html?utm_source=openai))

Handle unknown interfaceLanguage values without rejecting UiState.

An unsupported language value causes Language deserialization to fail for the entire UiState. settings::load then returns no saved UI state before sanitization runs. This can discard persisted settings such as recent files and pane sizes.

Implement custom deserialization for Language that maps unknown string values to System while preserving the existing serialization format. #[serde(other)] does not work with this externally tagged enum.

Use the singular form for 0 in Portuguese

The bundled catalog targets pt-BR. In CLDR, the pt "one" category covers integers 0 and 1 (i = 0..1), so pt-BR uses the singular for 0, as French does. Only pt-PT limits "one" to exactly 1. count() sends Portuguese through one_other, so it shows "0 apresentações não salvas" instead of the singular. Handle Portuguese with the same branch as French, and update the doc comment.

Update the app.language parameter description to list every accepted value

The run_ui handler at Line 1011-1025 accepts system, en, uk, ru, es, fr, pt, and de. The command description lists only system|en|uk. The command palette and the control-channel clients read this text, so they cannot see that ru, es, fr, pt, and de are valid. The handler also defaults to system when language is missing, so mark the parameter as optional.

Use display labels for Action Button choices.

i18n::format translates the template but inserts k unchanged. A French user therefore sees choices such as “Bouton d'action : beginning” instead of the catalog’s descriptive label. Pair each kind ID with its English display label, translate that label for the button, and keep k for the command parameter. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Position the proofing-language label after the translated slide count.

Use an exact lookup before a normalized fallback.

tr performs exact lookups, and the catalogs contain valid newline-specific keys such as New\nSlide. Therefore, unconditional normalization would bypass existing translations. For New\nWindow, the exact lookup falls back, while the catalog provides New Window → Neues Fenster. Use that space-normalized key only after the exact lookup misses, then reuse the translated result for layout, accessibility, and painting.

Update the label translation flow around `wrap_label` and the painter call to
try `crate::i18n::tr` on the original label first, preserving exact
newline-specific translations. Only if that lookup returns the original label
and it contains a newline, retry with newlines replaced by spaces; use the
translated result consistently for layout, accessibility, and painting.

This PR conflicts with main (47 files in a trial merge), so this review covers the PR branch as submitted, not a merged build. Nothing was reviewed for translation quality: I can't judge the five languages, and the description says native speakers reviewed ru and de.

What I ran (Linux, PR head at its own base, CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2): cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui --lib i18n: 9 passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored (the screenshot test, which needs DECKCRAFT_I18N_SHOTS). That includes the catalog uniqueness/completeness/placeholder test, the literal-call scan, the bundled-font coverage test, and the plural-form tests for Russian and the Western languages. I did not run the rest of the suite, or the app, so I did not look at any translated screen.

I also checked the catalogs directly with a script over the six TSV files (uk, ru, es, fr, pt, de):

  • Each has 1406 two-column rows. The key lists of ru, es, fr, pt and de are identical to uk, in the same order. The description says 1232 keys, so it is out of date.
  • No empty translations, no {placeholder} mismatches, and no trailing-ellipsis mismatches against the English source.
  • Entries identical to the English text: ru 32, es 47, fr 93, pt 56, de 69. That is plausible for brand and format names, but I did not read them.
