The Burden

The process of design conception often begins with a moment of paralysis — the “blank page syndrome.” Every designer understands the weight of the first line. Traditionally, early design begins through tentative geometric definition before deeper relationships and organizational intent are fully articulated.

HYWE explores an alternative starting point.


Relational Logic

The Genotype

HYWE does not introduce new architectural logic. It computationalises architectural logic that already exists.

Connectivity, adjacency, hierarchy, sequence, grouping, containment and circulation are fundamental architectural concerns that have always existed. Traditionally, those relationships are mediated through drawings, diagrams, spatial intuition, geometry, iteration, and eventually documentation.

HYWE says: Let's make those relationships the source representation.

HYWE provides an alternative computational route through familiar architectural reasoning. It investigates what happens when relational architectural reasoning is treated as a deterministic, executable computational process whose primary state is discrete and topological rather than geometric.

The result is not a finished solution, but a fluid organizational structure capable of adapting as ideas evolve.

Position in Spatial Computation

To situate HYWE within design computation and spatial analysis:

  • Parametric Modeling (e.g., Grasshopper) → Geometry is the computational object. Computation manipulates explicit coordinates, curves, and transformations.
  • Spatial Analysis (e.g., DepthmapX, Space Syntax) → Existing configurations are measured. Computation evaluates integration, choice, and visibility fields on drawn layouts.
  • BIM Automation (e.g., Dynamo) → Building elements are manipulated. Computation manages object properties, schedules, and construction parameters.
  • Topological Representation (e.g., TopologicPy) → Cellular topology is modeled. Computation represents non-manifold cells and dual graphs for evaluation and transfer.
  • HYWE (Computational Spatial Configuration)Spatial relationships and programmatic flow are the computational objects. Topological configurations and 3D massing are deterministically compiled from relational rules prior to geometric drafting.

The Dialogue

HYWE is an ideation tool designed to keep the human designer central to the design process.

The relational graph is not a cage — it is a conversation. As constraints shift, the underlying structure adapts dynamically. Rather than dictating form, HYWE provides abstract direction, relational continuity, and organizational logic.

The goal is to remain in the “why” longer, allowing the “how” to emerge with greater clarity and intent.

Emergent Language

HYWE does not attempt to encode a new architectural style. Instead, it establishes a different computational basis from which an alternative design approach might emerge.

If a recognisable visual language eventually develops, it will not be because it was designed into the system. It will emerge because a particular computational treatment of familiar architectural relationships—through a discrete, deterministic, and permutational process—produces recurring spatial consequences.

The ambition is that characteristics which currently make HYWE distinct (topology before geometry, exhaustive configuration over optimisation) could eventually become the DNA of the resulting architecture. If a distinct style emerges, it will not be an applied aesthetic, but rather the computational logic made visible.
