Part of #1165.

Context

#1202 (a full New Formatting Rule dialog) was closed without merging. This PR is a smaller, compatible subset: it deliberately covers only the Format all cells based on their values → 2-Color Scale / 3-Color Scale branch and keeps the existing formula rule path. Data bars, icon sets and the other four rule types remain in #1165. Unlike #1202, it exposes the per-stop Type / Value / Color editor, not just the three colours.

What changed

  • home.conditionalFormat accepts rule.stops as [{type, value, color}], with min, max, num, percent, percentile and formula stops; the old colors form still works. percent and percentile are clamped to 0-100.
  • Stop parsing rejects empty/non-string formulas and unknown stop types; nonempty formulas are stored verbatim.
  • home.manageRules supports edit: index with a replacement rule, preserving the rule priority and range. An index past the last rule or a non-index edit value is an error.
  • newFormattingRule now matches Excel's Select a Rule Type list: all six rule types, with "Format all cells based on their values" selected by default. The colour-scale and formula branches are wired; the other four remain Conditional formatting: home.conditionalFormat without a rule opens nothing (New Rule, Alt, H, L, N) #1165. New Rule… opens this list, so formula rules stay reachable from the ribbon.
  • More Rules… and Manage Rules → Edit open the colour-scale branch directly.
  • Manage Rules gets Edit for colour-scale rules. Editing keeps a stop's original theme colour unless the user changes it, and switching 3 → 2 → 3 restores the default #FFEB84 midpoint.
  • All new interface strings are translated in every catalog.

Verification

  • cargo test -p gridcraft-engine --lib (294 passed)
  • cargo test -p gridcraft-ui-egui --lib (94 passed)
  • cargo test -p gridcraft-ui-egui --test color_scale_rule (6 passed, including a widget-driven 3 → 2 → 3 and threshold edit)
  • cargo clippy -p gridcraft-engine -p gridcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • cargo fmt --all -- --check

Remaining in #1165

Data Bar, Icon Sets, the remaining four rule types (cells that contain, top/bottom, above/below average, unique/duplicate), and the full format picker for non-scale rules.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Create two- or three-color formatting scales with configurable threshold types, values, and colors for each stop.
    • Edit existing formatting rules in place, including changing scale styles and stop settings.
    • Create formula-based formatting rules and access additional rule options from the conditional-formatting menu.
    • Set data-bar thresholds and view rule priorities in the rules manager.
  • Improvements
    • Blank or invalid formulas and unsupported scale settings are prevented from being saved.
    • Conditional-formatting options are now available in additional languages.

  • crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs:1218: New Rule… now opens the colour-scale dialog. On main it opens the formula rule dialog (cfQuick, expression, ribbon.rs:1214), and no other menu entry creates a formula rule. After this change a user cannot create one from the ribbon. Please keep that path (a rule-type list with the formula entry, or leave New Rule… alone and use only More Rules…).
  • No catalog entries for the new strings. About 15 keys ("2-Color Scale", "Lowest value", "Midpoint", "New Formatting Rule", "More Rules…", and others) are missing in all catalogs. Please add them to each language.
  • dialogs.rs:1653: 3 -> 2 -> 3 gives the midpoint the minimum's colour. Use the default #FFEB84.
  • dialogs.rs:1549: Edit then OK turns theme colours into fixed RGB. Keep the original colour for a stop the user did not change.
  • insert.rs (cf_rule, stops): reject or clamp percent and percentile outside 0-100, as the dialog does. home.manageRules edit past the last rule should return an error, and the stop-count error should name the command that was called.
  • dialogs.rs:1709: please remove "tracked in #1165" from the user text.
  • Add tests for the New Rule… ribbon path, the 3 -> 2 -> 3 colours and the edit of a theme-colour stop.
  • Note, not a blocker today: #1733 will need an arm for AutoMin/AutoMax in cf_stop_json when it lands.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a dialog for creating and editing two- and three-color conditional-formatting scales, with per-stop threshold and color settings. Engine commands validate typed thresholds and support in-place rule replacement. The ribbon, translations, tests, and documentation are updated.

Changes: Color-scale rule editing

Layer / File(s) Summary
Engine rule parsing and editing
crates/engine/src/cmd/insert.rs
Conditional-format commands accept explicit typed color-scale stops, validate formulas and threshold values, and replace rules by index. Rule listings include priorities. Tests cover valid and invalid additions and edits.
Scale editor and entry points
crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/color_scale_rule.rs
The dialog creates and edits color-scale rules and formula rules. Ribbon actions open it, and Manage Rules can edit color-scale rules in place. UI tests cover thresholds, colors, rule switching, and formula validation.
Translations and editor documentation
crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/*, ROADMAP.md, docs/gaps.md, docs/target-app-parity.md, docs/ui-parity.md
Translation catalogs add conditional-formatting labels. Documentation describes per-stop scale editing and in-place rule updates.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0e3bb

A limited color-scale editing workflow can reject valid stop-type changes, but the impact is localized and does not corrupt existing rules.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 0e3bb

The change reuses existing formula evaluation and workbook update mechanisms. One ownership weakness remains: switching worksheets while editing can redirect the replacement to another worksheet’s rule. No broader privilege expansion was established, but security coverage remains incomplete.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · inferred: The new edit lifecycle does not retain its original worksheet or rule identity. Opening Edit on worksheet A, switching to worksheet B, and confirming can replace B’s rule at the same index if it exists. Intervening list changes can similarly redirect the replacement. Transactional execution and undo contain execution failures but do not detect a valid replacement of the wrong target.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated targeting weakness affects conditional-format rule state in the current workbook context, including another active worksheet. It does not establish cross-tenant access, credential exposure, or additional execution privileges.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — User-supplied threshold formulas reach the existing workbook formula evaluator after engine validation. The evaluator receives workbook, worksheet, and cell context; this evaluation path predates the PR.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Bind edit sessions to their originating workbook, worksheet, and rule identity or version, and reject submission when that target has changed. This would prevent successful but misdirected replacements after navigation or intervening mutations.

Exercise the editor through egui_kittest events.

These tests seed dialog.values directly, so they bypass the style ComboBox, stop-type combos, threshold fields, and color pickers. The 3→2→3 test exercises the render-time transition branch, but not the combo event that should trigger it.

Add one focused harness test that clicks the style combo through the 3→2→3 transition and edits one stop type and threshold through injected events. Keep pure value-to-rule mapping checks in direct state/API tests. Do not require exhaustive widget coverage.

Pushed 856ea87 with the Excel-parity New Rule flow and the three CodeRabbit fixes:

  • New Rule… now opens Excel's six-item Select a Rule Type list (verified against Excel for Microsoft 365 on this machine via UI Automation). Colour scales and formulas are wired; the other four types remain Conditional formatting: home.conditionalFormat without a rule opens nothing (New Rule, Alt, H, L, N) #1165.
  • CodeRabbit 1: cf_value_kind rejects empty/non-string formulas and unknown stop types; nonempty formulas are stored verbatim; data-bar absent min/max defaults are preserved.
  • CodeRabbit 2: home.manageRules rejects an edit value that is not a rule index (string, float, negative, bool) instead of returning success.
  • CodeRabbit 3: corrected the ui-parity entry to the new New Rule → Format all cells based on their values path.
  • Test nitpick: added a widget-driven egui_kittest test for the Format Style 3 → 2 → 3 combo and a midpoint type/threshold edit.
Verification: engine lib 294 passed, ui-egui lib 94 passed, color_scale_rule 6 passed, clippy and fmt clean.

Drive the formula branch through widgets.

new_rule_still_creates_a_formula_rule sets ruleType and formula directly in dialog.values, so a broken selector or formula field can pass this test. Use harness events to select the formula rule type and enter =A1>2, then keep the existing rule assertion.

The direct-state/API exception applies to non-interaction behavior. This test opens the dialog and confirms it through the UI, so it should not bypass the controls it is meant to cover.

Review bullets from the 2026-10-18 CHANGES_REQUESTED review, verified against 5ebbf70:

  • ribbon.rs:1218 New Rule… must keep the formula path — Fixed in 856ea87: New Rule… now opens Excel's six-type Select a Rule Type list, with "Use a formula to determine which cells to format" wired to the formula branch. The colour-scale editor is reached from New Rule… → Format all cells based on their values, Color Scales › More Rules…, and Manage Rules › Edit. 5ebbf70 extends ribbon_tests::new_rule_opens_the_rule_type_list_with_the_formula_entry to assert the ribbon-opened list renders the formula entry.
  • Missing catalog entries for the new strings — Fixed in 9f9c07d and 856ea87: all new keys ("2-Color Scale", "3-Color Scale", "Lowest value", "Highest value", "Midpoint", "Minimum", "Maximum", "New Formatting Rule", "More Rules…", "Select a Rule Type", "Edit the Rule Description", the four other rule types, "Use a formula to determine which cells to format", "Format Style:", "Percent", "Percentile", "Formula") are present in every catalog (i18n.rs Japanese plus cs, de, es, fr, ko, pt, ru, sr, zh).
  • dialogs.rs:1653: 3 → 2 → 3 gave the midpoint the minimum's colour — Fixed in 9f9c07d: the restored midpoint is the default #FFEB84 (the_editor_widgets_drive_the_scale, switching_three_to_two_to_three_uses_the_default_midpoint).
  • dialogs.rs:1549: Edit then OK froze theme colours into RGB — Fixed in 9f9c07d: cf_stop_json keeps the CellColor source, and cf_stop_params sends it back unchanged when the picker's colour still matches, so untouched stops keep their theme reference (edit_keeps_an_unchanged_theme_colour).
  • insert.rs (cf_rule, stops): percent/percentile range, out-of-range edit, command-named stop-count error — Fixed in 9f9c07d: percent/percentile clamp to 0-100, home.manageRules rejects an edit past the last rule (and non-index edits), and the stop-count error names the calling command (colour_scale_thresholds_are_clamped_to_the_percent_range, manage_rules_rejects_an_edit_past_the_last_rule, manage_rules_rejects_a_non_index_edit, manage_rules_names_itself_in_a_stop_count_error). 856ea87 additionally rejects empty formulas and unknown stop types.
  • dialogs.rs:1709: "tracked in Conditional formatting: home.conditionalFormat without a rule opens nothing (New Rule, Alt, H, L, N) #1165" in user text — Fixed in 9f9c07d: the line is gone from the dialog.
  • Tests for the New Rule… ribbon path, the 3 → 2 → 3 colours and the theme-colour edit — Fixed in 9f9c07d, 856ea87, 5ebbf70: ribbon path (ribbon_tests::new_rule_opens_the_rule_type_list_with_the_formula_entry), 3 → 2 → 3 colours (switching_three_to_two_to_three_uses_the_default_midpoint, plus the_editor_widgets_drive_the_scale through the style combo), theme-colour edit (edit_keeps_an_unchanged_theme_colour), and formula creation with the rule type selected through the dialog widget (new_rule_still_creates_a_formula_rule).
  • AutoMin/AutoMax arm in cf_stop_json for Conditional formatting: data bars keep Automatic and Lowest/Highest Value bounds apart (#1159) #1733 — Not applicable today: note only; the arm lands with Conditional formatting: data bars keep Automatic and Lowest/Highest Value bounds apart (#1159) #1733.

Verification on 5ebbf70: cargo test -p gridcraft-ui-egui --lib (94 passed), cargo test -p gridcraft-engine --lib (294 passed), cargo test -p gridcraft-ui-egui --test color_scale_rule (6 passed), cargo clippy -p gridcraft-ui-egui -p gridcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo fmt --all -- --check.

…storytold#1165)

New Formatting Rule offers Excel's six rule types. The colour-scale branch
edits per-stop type, value and colour, and Manage Rules edits a rule in place.

Formula rules refuse an empty or unparseable formula: the dialog keeps OK
disabled until a formula is typed, and the command rejects both an empty rule
and a formula that does not parse (storytold#1999), so neither a rule that never applies
nor a workbook Excel cannot open is written.

Percent and percentile stops are clamped to 0-100, and an edit past the last
rule names home.manageRules and leaves no undo step.

color-scale rules containing formula stops whose value is missing, non-string,
or blank after trimming, while preserving confirmation for other stops.
