Entering a malformed conditional-format formula such as =A1> currently creates a rule that can be saved into an XLSX file; #1999 reports that Excel then refuses to open it. Validate formulas with the existing parser before changing the workbook, so the existing dialog displays the error, preserves the entered text, and lets the user correct it.

This covers expression rules, both comparison bounds, and data-bar formula thresholds. Validation checks syntax; unknown function names and error references remain accepted. Existing malformed imported rules are not repaired or discarded.

Fixes #1999.

Validation:

  • Reproduced three rejection failures on upstream 23829d8; the valid-formula roundtrip test passed on that baseline.
  • Four engine regression tests and one dialog correction test pass.
  • cargo +1.95.0 test --workspace: 1,665 passed, 0 failed, 1 ignored.
  • Focused engine Clippy, formatting, assets, dependency layers, parity, keytips, and WASM checks pass.
  • Full cargo +1.95.0 xtask ci stops on unchanged upstream crates/ui-egui/src/desktop_theme.rs:36 (clippy::let_unit_value) on macOS. WASM also reports an unchanged dead-code warning in backstage.rs.

Related-work review: #1458 concerns sheet-name quoting. The editor work in #1822 and colour-scale threshold work in #1885 address different paths; when merged, their new formula-entry paths should retain equivalent validation. This patch covers the creation paths present on current main. Excel itself was not used for validation.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes

    • Conditional-format formulas are now validated before rules are created.
    • Invalid formulas in expressions, comparisons, and data-bar thresholds are rejected with an error.
    • Failed validation preserves the entered formula, workbook state, and undo/redo history.
    • Corrected formulas can be submitted successfully without creating duplicate rules.
  • Documentation

    • Added documentation covering validation behavior, supported cases, and format compatibility.

📝 Walkthrough

Conditional-format formula validation now rejects malformed expression, cell-comparison, and data-bar formulas before rule creation. Engine and UI tests cover rejection, state preservation, correction, and saving valid rules. Documentation records the validation scope and limits.

Changes: Conditional-format formula validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Command validation and engine coverage
crates/engine/src/cmd/insert.rs, crates/engine/tests/conditional_formula_validation.rs, docs/decisions.md, docs/file-format-parity.md, HANDOFF.md
The command validates expression, cell-is, and data-bar formulas before storing rules. Engine tests cover rejected formulas, unchanged workbook and undo/redo state, and save/reopen of valid formulas. The decision, parity notes, and handoff document describe the behavior and its scope.
Dialog error and correction flow
crates/ui-egui/tests/conditional_formula_validation.rs
The UI test verifies that an invalid formula displays an error and remains in the dialog. After correction, the dialog closes and creates one conditional format.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: echelon, vedran-dobos

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4a1c2

The new formula validation still accepts input with repeated leading equals signs and silently stores a changed formula. The impact is narrow and easy to fix. Otherwise the change is safe to merge.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 4a1c2

Formula validation happens before workbook changes, while existing protection checks and undo behavior remain in place. No material security risk was identified in the changed path.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed path affects conditional-format rules in the command’s targeted workbook sheet. It narrows acceptance of caller-supplied formula strings without adding a caller, credential, service boundary or privileged execution mechanism.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-controlled formula text must pass parsing before rule mutation. Accepted input still proceeds through the existing command-enabled check and workbook protection validation; the patch does not replace those controls with parser success.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Repeated malformed submissions remain non-mutating because validation precedes the edit transaction. Workbook publication, history updates and recovery continue to use the existing shared mechanisms rather than introducing a second state owner.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1999 is directly linked and has coding requirements for expression formulas, cell-comparison bounds, and formula thresholds. add_cf now parses formulas through gridcraft_formula::parse before creating a rule, including expression rules, both cellIs bounds, and data-bar formula bounds. The validation error returns before workbook mutation. The engine tests cover malformed expressions, comparison bounds, and both data-bar bounds, plus state and undo/redo preservation. The tests also cover literals, valid formulas, unknown functions, error references, save/reopen behavior, and number/percent/percentile formula handling through the shared threshold path. The UI test confirms that the dialog keeps the invalid text and remains open until correction. The issue's possible save-time repair of already-invalid imported rules is a separate follow-up, and the PR does not claim to implement it.

These changes support the implementation and verification of issue #1999. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated source changes are established by the reviewed summary and focused diff.

Correct the formula through the harness.

The test clears the error and replaces the formula through state_mut(). It therefore does not verify that a user can dismiss the error and edit the retained text. Dismiss the error and enter the correction with harness pointer or keyboard events.

As per coding guidelines, “For user-interaction integration tests, drive SheetApp in a headless egui_kittest::Harness, inject egui keyboard or pointer events, and assert resulting selection, editor, or workbook state.”

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Reject repeated leading equals signs before storing a rule.

If a user enters ==A1, both paths remove every leading = before cf_formula runs. The command accepts the malformed input and stores A1 instead. The parser itself removes only one leading =, so validate the original formula and remove at most one prefix for storage. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
