Fixes #1848 (both cases measured in the issue).

What

A colour-scale stop whose value is a formula keeps its kind. A non-numeric cfvo val used to fall back to CfValueKind::Formula, so a percent, percentile or number stop holding a formula (e.g. =$Z$1*10) was read as a plain formula stop, its raw result taken as the threshold instead of a percent/percentile, and written back as type="formula" — after a GridCraft save Excel then showed a changed rule.

  • CfValueKind gains FormulaNumber, FormulaPercent and FormulaPercentile.
  • The reader keeps the stop's type for a non-numeric val; the writer writes num, percent or percentile back (2006 and x14 cfvo).
  • threshold evaluates the formula and reads the result as that stop's kind (a percent of the span, a percentile of the values).
  • A Percentile stop's formula counts as a percentile only when it is a single cell reference (=$Z$10, Sheet1!$A$1); any computed formula (=$Z$1*10, =($Z$10), =MAX($Z$10)) gives the threshold 0, the number, as Excel reads it.
  • home.conditionalFormat accepts a formula in a typed stop without losing the type. That covers the data bar's min/max on main; colour-scale stops arrive with Conditional formatting: 2-/3-colour scale editor with per-stop thresholds #1822.
  • A typed stop's formula now goes through the same validation as a formula stop (Conditional formatting: a rule or threshold with an invalid formula is saved as typed, and Excel can't open the file #1999): {"type": "num", "value": "1+"} is refused instead of being written as <cfvo type="num" val="1+"/>, which Excel cannot open, not even with repair.

Out-of-order thresholds draw as Excel does. A colour scale stored with its thresholds not ascending now draws them sorted, with the colours kept in stop order (the first stop's colour at the lowest threshold). Equal thresholds follow the measured rule: a value at or above the highest takes the last colour, otherwise one at or below the lowest takes the first. So 2 / 2 / 8 gives the first colour at 2, and 2 / 8 / 8 and 8 / 8 give the later one.

Measured (table from #1848)

Stops Excel GridCraft before GridCraft after
Percent =$Z$1*10 → Highest even steps all cells one colour; saved as Formula even steps; type="percent" kept
Number 8 → Number 2 (red → green) 0–2 red, steps, 8–10 green all red 0–2 red, steps, 8–10 green
Number 8 → Number 8 0–7 red, 8–10 green all red 0–7 red, 8–10 green

From the check in #1848 (c38f5b3)

  1. A Percentile stop with a computed formula. Excel reads it as a percentile only for a single cell reference; =$Z$1*10 (result 20, cells 10…20) is 0 in Excel where the branch read 12. Fixed: the formula is evaluated as a percentile only when it is one cell reference.
  2. Three stops whose first two thresholds are equal. Excel shows the first colour at that threshold, the branch the second. Fixed, and the branch's test now expects the first colour.
  3. An invalid formula in a Number, Percent or Percentile stop made a file Excel can't open (the Conditional formatting: a rule or threshold with an invalid formula is saved as typed, and Excel can't open the file #1999 class, through the typed stops). Fixed with the validation gate above.

  • cf::tests::color_scale_three_stops_repeating_the_last_threshold_take_the_later_colour
  • tests::roundtrip::cfvo_formula_stops_keep_their_kind (save → open keeps type="percent|num|percentile", never formula)
  • tests/it/cf_formula_validate.rs: typed stops with an unparseable formula are rejected; one that parses is kept with its kind.

Each of the two behaviour fixes was checked against the code it replaces: the percentile test fails with the old eval result, and invalid_cf_formulas_are_rejected fails when the new kinds are left out of check_cf_value.

cargo test -p gridcraft-engine --lib (469), --test it (80), -p gridcraft-xlsx --lib (259), -p gridcraft-model --lib (23): all pass. cargo fmt --all -- --check and clippy -D warnings (engine, xlsx, model, all targets) are clean.

Merge state

Rebased onto main at 3099df93; the cf.rs conflict came from #884 and #1474, which rewrote the colour-scale drawing on main.

Still open elsewhere, unchanged by this PR:

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed conditional-format color scales so formula-based thresholds retain their number, percentage, or percentile behavior when saved and reopened.
    • Thresholds entered out of order are now evaluated in ascending order without changing their associated colors.
    • Improved color selection at and beyond threshold boundaries, including when thresholds repeat.
    • Percentile formulas are treated as percentile lookups only when they reference a single cell, and invalid conditional-format formulas are rejected.

Walkthrough

Conditional-format formula stops retain their number, percent, or percentile kind through parsing and XLSX round trips. The engine evaluates formula thresholds by kind and sorts color-scale thresholds while preserving stop-color order.

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: aiongg

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to d5161

No actionable merge-blocking issue remains. The previous formatting concern appears corrected; the formatting check should run in normal CI before merge.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to d5161

Typed formula thresholds reuse the existing evaluation and transactional editing paths. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns broader formula capabilities and backward compatibility of debug-format exports.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly established exposure is caller-supplied stop expressions affecting the target workbook's conditional-format evaluation and exported files. The inspected paths do not establish tenant-wide, service-wide, or infrastructure authority.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — Typed strings newly reach formula evaluation through this input shape, but plain formula stops already reached the same evaluator at the base. This is an input-semantic expansion; the comparison does not establish a new privileged execution boundary.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The public command applies the existing syntax validator to all four formula-backed stop variants before insertion. This is a formula-validity control, not evidence of authorization or a sandbox for the evaluator's complete capabilities.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title clearly summarizes both primary changes: preserving formula stop kinds and sorting out-of-order colour-scale thresholds to match Excel. It is specific and directly related to the pull request.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #1848 is open and directly linked. The supplied whole-PR evidence reports formula-backed Number, Percent, and Percentile stops retain their kinds in XLSX read and write paths. It reports kind-specific threshold evaluation, the single-cell-reference rule for formula-backed Percentile stops, sorted out-of-order thresholds, and repeated-threshold behavior. The reported tests cover these cases, round trips, and typed-stop formula validation. The inspected insertion change also validates FormulaNumber, FormulaPercent, and FormulaPercentile and preserves typed formulas from home.conditionalFormat.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The reported changes stay within issue #1848. The model variants, conditional-format evaluation, XLSX reader and writer, insertion validation, and targeted tests implement or verify the requested typed formula stops and threshold ordering. The parity and roadmap documentation records the same behavior. No unrelated change is demonstrated. Two requested diff reads were unavailable because changed blobs were missing, so this conclusion uses the supplied whole-PR evidence and the available insertion diff.

…e later colour (storytold#1848)

The two-stop arm already gave a value at a repeated threshold the later
colour; the three-stop arm returned the first colour there (e.g. thresholds
2, 2, 8 put a cell of 2 in the first colour). Pick the last segment
containing the value instead, so both adjacent pairs behave like two stops.

Review notes (not a formal review) on head ead631b.

Checked

  • Read the diff: crates/engine/src/cf.rs (threshold, single_cell_ref, scale_color, ~l.115-180, and the colour-scale branch ~l.317-330), crates/model/src/features.rs (~l.140, the three new CfValueKind::Formula* variants), the reader cfvo() and the two writers (sheet_read.rs ~l.630, sheet_write.rs ~l.766 and ~l.799), the validation in crates/engine/src/cmd/insert.rs (~l.1490, ~l.1548) and the new tests. The match arms cover every new variant.
  • CI is green. No assets or third-party code.

Real Excel (Microsoft 365, Excel 16.0 build 20527, Windows, COM, new temporary workbooks, values 0-10 in A1:A11, colours read back through DisplayFormat.Interior.Color):

  • Two number stops given out of order (8 red, then 2 green): A1-A3 red, A9-A11 green, in between interpolated. Matches color_scale_sorts_thresholds_keeping_the_colours_in_stop_order.
  • Two stops at 8/8 (red, green): values up to 7 red, from 8 green. Matches color_scale_equal_thresholds_take_the_later_colour.
  • Percent stop with the formula =$Z$1*10 (Z1 = 2, so 20%): threshold 2, as in color_scale_formula_percent_stop_is_read_as_a_percent.
  • Percentile stop =$Z$10 (a single cell reference, value 20) over 10..20: 10, 11, 12 are the first colour. With =$Z$1*10 instead, the stop acts as the number 0 and A1 (10) is half way between the two colours. Both match color_scale_percentile_formula_counts_only_a_single_cell_reference.
  • Saved a 3-stop scale from Excel with percent =$Z$1*10, num =$Z$2, percentile =$Z$3; the sheet XML has <cfvo type="percent" val="$Z$1*10"/>, <cfvo type="num" val="$Z$2"/>, <cfvo type="percentile" val="$Z$3"/>, the same form cfvo_xml now writes (cfvo_formula_stops_keep_their_kind).

One small difference. At the exact half-way point Excel gave 807F00 (red 128, green 127) in my runs, while the tests assert [0x80, 0x80, 0] / [128, 128, 0] (color_scale_percentile_formula_counts_only_a_single_cell_reference, ..._repeating_the_last_threshold...). That is a one-unit difference in the green channel only; it is not worth blocking, but exact pixel parity would need lerp to match Excel's arithmetic. I only measured 2-stop scales, so I can't say what the rule is in general.

Not checked

  • I did not run the Rust tests, and did not compare the 3-stop repeated-threshold cases (..._repeating_the_first_threshold... / ..._last_threshold...) in Excel.
  • The home.conditionalFormat JSON path was not exercised against Excel (it has no Excel counterpart).

Behaviour matches Excel in everything I could run; looks ready for a maintainer, with the one-unit rounding as an optional follow-up.

`main` split the conflicting files again: `cmd/insert.rs` into `cmd/insert/`
(5a7d2f2) and `xlsx/src/sheet_read.rs` / `sheet_write.rs` into `*/rules.rs`
and `*/parts.rs`. The branch's five hunks moved with the functions they touch:
`check_cf_formula`/`check_cf_value`/`add_cf` to `cmd/insert/cond_format.rs`,
`cfvo` to `xlsx/src/sheet_read/rules.rs`, and `cfvo_xml`/`x14_cfvo` to
`xlsx/src/sheet_write/rules.rs`.

Resolution: take `main`'s versions of the three conflicted files and re-apply
the five hunks where they now live, each placed by matching its exact context
(-F0, no fuzz); all five landed on the first candidate module, none had to be
adapted. `crates/engine/src/cf.rs` needed no hand: it auto-merged and differs
from the branch tip only by main's explicit-import line from the Sonar cleanup
(3b65b9a), with the branch's colour-scale work intact. `CfValueKind` is still
declared in `crates/model/src/features.rs` on `main` (only the pivot and print
items moved out), so the branch's three new variants are in the right file.

Against `main` the merge carries all of storytold#1885 (9 files) and against the branch
tip it carries all of `main`; no hunk from either side was dropped.

Checks: `cargo test -p gridcraft-xlsx -p gridcraft-engine` (506 + 83 engine lib
and integration, `cf_formula_validate::*` among them; 264 xlsx, including
`tests::roundtrip::cfvo_formula_stops_keep_their_kind`), `cargo fmt -p
gridcraft-engine -p gridcraft-xlsx -p gridcraft-model -- --check`, and `cargo
clippy` on those three crates with `--all-targets --all-features -- -D
warnings`. `cargo xtask ci` cannot run on Windows (storytold#2541, as on the other
branches): the engine's `save_fails_upfront_when_the_temp_name_is_taken` test
compiles `std::os::unix::fs::symlink` without a `#[cfg(unix)]` guard; it was
guarded locally to run the suite, and the guard is not part of this commit.

Note for the reviewer: storytold#2709 changes the same file's `lerp` (colour-scale
interpolation) and corrects two assertions this branch adds; the two touch
disjoint hunks, so whichever lands second takes a trivial rebase.

…d (review storytold#1885)

CodeRabbit on storytold#1885: `value_kind` read a stop's string value as the stop's own
formula and then dropped the result when it normalized to nothing. The value is
a string there, so `as_f64` left `val` at 0 and the stop silently became
`Number(0.0)`, `Percent(0.0)` or `Percentile(0.0)` — a threshold nobody gave it
— while `check_cf_value` saw no formula and so validated nothing. Only the
typed arms were affected, and only for a data bar's `min`/`max`: `min`, `max`
and `formula` stops read their value elsewhere.

`value_kind` now returns `Result` and refuses a string that empties out
(`"="`, `"=="`, whitespace) with the same `bad("home.conditionalFormat", …)`
the unknown-operator and unknown-rule-type paths already use; the two call
sites propagate it with `?`.

Test: `invalid_cf_formulas_are_rejected` gains the three shapes (`"="`, `" "`,
`"=="`) and fails on the previous code, where the command answered
`{"rules":1}`. `valid_cf_formulas_still_work` gains the two guards that keep
the fix from being over-strict: `"5"` is still a formula for a `num` stop, and
a string beside a `min` stop is still ignored rather than refused.

Checks: `cargo test -p gridcraft-engine` (506 lib + 83 integration), `cargo fmt
-p gridcraft-engine -- --check`, and `cargo clippy -p gridcraft-engine
--all-targets --all-features -- -D warnings`. `cargo xtask ci` cannot run on
Windows (storytold#2541): the engine's `save_fails_upfront_when_the_temp_name_is_taken`
test compiles `std::os::unix::fs::symlink` without a `#[cfg(unix)]` guard; it
was guarded locally to run the suite, and the guard is not part of this commit.
