i18n: interface languages from craft-i18n, English and German (#15) - #1488
DeckCraft's interface can now be shown in English or German. By default it follows the system language. Preferences › Interface language offers System language, English and Deutsch, and the app.language command does the same for the control channel and MCP. Related to #15.
This is roadmap step 3d from storytold/craft-i18n#48: DeckCraft reads the shared craft-i18n catalogs, wired the same way as WordCraft's pilot (storytold/wordcraft#4072). That is why there is no i18n/*.tsv here. The German catalog is locales/de/deckcraft.tsv in craft-i18n (companion PR: storytold/craft-i18n#71). Other languages can then come as catalog-only PRs there.
How it works
Lookup: strings stay English in the code and are looked up when drawn (tl!, crates/ui-egui/src/i18n.rs). A string without a translation shows in English.
Build:build.rs embeds locales/<lang>/common.tsv and deckcraft.tsv from CRAFT_I18N_DIR. A local build without it is English only. Once craft-i18n.rev exists, CI and releases check out craft-i18n at that commit through craft-common-actions and set CRAFT_I18N_REQUIRED=1. A checkout without a DeckCraft catalog then stops the build, so the pin must point to a commit that has one (see Before merge).
Setting:language in ui.json is auto (follow the system; DECKCRAFT_LANGUAGE overrides) or a code. A well-formed code this build doesn't offer (for example de in a local build without catalogs) is kept, and the interface follows the system until that code is offered. Anything else is reset to auto. Cancel in Preferences puts the previous language back.
Stays English: command ids, ribbon tab ids (view.tab, ui.set), engine labels returned to scripts, the control channel, the CLI and MCP.
What is translated
Ribbon tabs and every ribbon button, through the shared widgets (big_button_ex, small_button_named, icon_toggle, color_split, check_item, spinner, section, drop_button), including accessible names and tooltips.
The command palette, searchable by the German name, the English name or the id.
The status bar, notes pane and spelling popup.
File tab navigation, headings, links and the start page.
Dialog titles, OK/Cancel, fields, checkboxes and choice lists.
Literal egui labels, buttons, hints and tooltips in panes and dialogs.
Still English (follow-ups, also listed in docs/localization-parity.md):
slide placeholder prompts ("Click to add title"), which the renderer draws
status messages coming from the engine
the native macOS menu bar
labels assembled with format! before they reach a widget
Tests
Lookup and fallback, \n in labels, and {name} placeholders.
Validation of the language setting, including a damaged ui.json and a code this build doesn't offer.
Quick Access Toolbar labels saved from two-line ribbon captions.
app.language: report, change, refuse bad values.
The live UI switched to a German fixture and back: tabs, buttons, split-button names and the status bar; tab ids stay English.
Preferences Cancel restores the language.
The embedded catalogs parse cleanly (skipped without CRAFT_I18N_DIR).
The fixture makes the UI tests independent of craft-i18n.
Run locally (Linux):
cargo fmt --check, cargo xtask assets, cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask wasm: all OK.
cargo test --workspace --exclude deckcraft: 2,228 passed.
deckcraft-ui-egui tests with CRAFT_I18N_DIR set to the German catalog and CRAFT_I18N_REQUIRED=1: 462 passed.
Not run here: the deckcraft desktop app crate, because this machine lacks libasound2-dev (alsa-sys).
To try it: git clone https://github.com/storytold/craft-i18n ../craft-i18n (the companion branch until it merges), then CRAFT_I18N_DIR=$PWD/../craft-i18n cargo run -p deckcraft, then Preferences › Interface language › Deutsch.
Before merge:storytold/craft-i18n#71 merges first. Then craft-i18n.rev moves to its merge commit. With the current pin, which has no deckcraft.tsv, CI and release builds would fail.
Added German as an interface language alongside English. The app can follow your system language, or you can choose a language in Preferences; your selection is saved.
Localized interface labels, menus, dialogs, tooltips, accessibility text, and other controls. Command palette searches also match translated labels.
German translations are partial, so some interface text may remain in English.
Builds without translation catalogs continue to provide an English-only interface.
…old#15)
DeckCraft reads the shared craft-i18n catalogs (roadmap step 3d there), wired as in WordCraft's
pilot: strings stay English in the code and are looked up when drawn (`tl!`); `build.rs` embeds
`locales/<lang>/common.tsv` and `deckcraft.tsv` from `CRAFT_I18N_DIR` at the commit in
`craft-i18n.rev`, and a build without it is English only.
- `language` setting in ui.json: `auto` (follow the system, `DECKCRAFT_LANGUAGE` overrides) or
a code; Preferences › Interface language and the `app.language` UI command set it, Cancel in
Preferences restores it. Offered: English and German.
- Translated: ribbon tabs and buttons (through the widgets), command palette (found by German
or English name or id), status bar, File tab, dialog titles, buttons, fields and choice
lists, panes. Command ids, tab ids, engine labels returned to scripts, the control channel,
CLI and MCP stay English.
- Tests: lookup and fallback, setting validation, `app.language`, switching the live UI to a
German fixture and back (tab ids stay English), Preferences Cancel, and that embedded catalogs
parse cleanly.
- Docs: ATTRIBUTION (craft-i18n), localization-parity, gaps, ROADMAP.

Walkthrough
The UI now embeds English and German catalogs when the catalog checkout is available. It can follow the system language or use a saved language preference. Translation lookups are used across interface surfaces, while command IDs and several documented surfaces remain English.
The build discovers locale catalogs and generates embedded catalog data. The catalog revision, dependencies, attribution, and localization records are updated.
Language preference and translation runtime crates/ui-egui/src/i18n.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/app.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/app/commands.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/state.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/preferences.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/body.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs
The UI stores and normalizes a language preference, resolves the system language, and exposes language selection through Preferences and app.language. Translation helpers and tests cover language selection, fallback, and catalog validation.
Labels, prompts, tooltips, search text, and accessibility names across these interface surfaces use translation lookups. The command palette also searches translated labels.
German may be unavailable from the pinned catalog, and two language-selection workflows remain ineffective in the described conditions. Resolve these concerns before merging.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to a4a8b
The inspected changes keep language selection separate from document operations and preserve stable command identifiers. The main remaining uncertainty is whether release builds consistently use the intended translation revision and require its presence.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — Control of the configured build-time catalogs can influence translated interface text in every application binary built from those inputs. Runtime language-command authority is narrower: the inspected branch changes the current application's presentation preference, not document contents, engine permissions, or credentials.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The catalog trust boundary is the build environment supplying CRAFT_I18N_DIR. Absolute-path and catalog-presence checks validate input shape, not provenance. Required mode rejects missing inputs, but whether production automation verifies the committed revision and enables that mode remains unresolved; the absence of a local revision check alone does not establish attacker access to release inputs.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Unsupported persisted language values fall back to automatic selection, while invalid command values fail before mutation. This keeps unavailable language selections within the existing presentation flow rather than creating partially applied document operations.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Make catalog revision verification and required-mode enforcement auditable in the actual release path. Record the resolved catalog revision with release provenance so packaged interface text can be traced to its reviewed source. This addresses an evidence gap, not a demonstrated compromise.

icon_toggle receives the formatted tooltip, such as Save (Ctrl+S), and looks up that whole string. A catalog entry for Save therefore does not translate the tooltip or accessible name. Translate q.label before adding the shortcut. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Pin a revision that contains the German DeckCraft catalog.
The pinned revision has locales/de/common.tsv, but it does not have locales/de/deckcraft.tsv. The build script skips that locale, so a build from this pin cannot offer German. The fixture-based UI tests do not check this pinned catalog. Update the pin to a revision that contains the app catalog. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

cargo fmt --check, CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2 cargo check -p deckcraft-ui-egui, and CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2 cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui i18n::tests passed. The six tests cover the German switch, Preferences Cancel, app.language, and English tab IDs.
CRAFT_I18N_REQUIRED=1 CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2 cargo check -p deckcraft-ui-egui failed with the expected build-script error when CRAFT_I18N_DIR was unset.
CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2 cargo test --workspace --exclude deckcraft failed at deckcraft-pdf::tests::unembeddable_font_returns_error_instead_of_a_pdf_missing_text (12 faces vs. 1); craft-fonts is absent here. The Windows data/win-cargo.sh UI run ended before Cargo with WSL UtilAcceptVsock ... accept4 failed 110. I did not run cargo xtask ci or the desktop app build (ALSA development headers are unavailable).
The craft-i18n.rev commit (1935849) has locales/de/common.tsv but no locales/de/deckcraft.tsv; the catalog is proposed in storytold/craft-i18n#71 (head 0c37940). The PR body is right that the pin must advance before merge. The build script supports CRAFT_I18N_REQUIRED, but none of .github/workflows/* references craft-i18n.rev, CRAFT_I18N_DIR, or CRAFT_I18N_REQUIRED, so current CI/release workflows neither embed nor validate the German catalog. The repository attribution points to craft-i18n's attribution file, which will need to be present at the advanced pin too.
git merge-tree against origin/main reported a clean merge. Open #1450 also edits crates/ui-egui/src/i18n.rs, so the localization work overlaps.
I opened storytold/craft-i18n#75 for the Simplified Chinese DeckCraft catalog, and #1530 stacked on this PR to offer zh-hans.
One thing that came out of testing: German needs no interface-font work, but Chinese labels render as tofu boxes because UiFonts only borrows faces for presentation and typed text, not the catalog's own rows. #1530 preloads the current catalog into UiFonts once per language so any non-Latin catalog draws before a deck with that script is open. If you'd rather have that generic hook in #1488 before it merges, I can move it here and leave #1530 as the language-list/catalog part.
Thanks for the reviews. I merged current main into the branch (ca6e00c8, no conflicts). I used a merge rather than a rebase so #1530, which is stacked on this branch, keeps working.
@Harrison-Booth:
CI and release embedding: The workflows in this repository don't need to mention craft-i18n. ci.yml, release.yml and freebsd.yml call the shared workflows in craft-common-actions, and those run actions/checkout-craft-i18n. That action reads craft-i18n.rev, checks out the pinned commit, and exports CRAFT_I18N_DIR and CRAFT_I18N_REQUIRED=1. In gate.yml this is the "Check out craft-i18n" step. release.yml repeats it for each build job. The Nix workflow doesn't check out craft-i18n yet, so the Nix build stays English only. It doesn't fail. CI therefore builds with the pinned catalogs, and i18n::tests::embedded_catalogs_parse_cleanly validates them.
deckcraft-pdf failure: That test needs craft-fonts and is unrelated to this PR.
i18n: add Korean (ko) interface #1450: It targets the pre-0.12 layout, where catalogs were in-repo .tsv files (crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/{uk,pl,ko}.tsv). After this PR, Korean can land as locales/ko/deckcraft.tsv in craft-i18n plus one entry in LANGUAGES.
@carnothuang: Thanks for #1530. Please keep the UiFonts hook in #1530. German needs no font work, so in this PR the hook would have no test or visible effect, and Chinese is the first language that exercises it. #1530 can rebase onto main once this PR merges.
Local checks on ca6e00c8:
fmt, clippy (-D warnings), pdf-deps, assets, layers and wasm all pass.
cargo test --workspace --exclude deckcraft: 2,079 passed, 0 failed.
Resolve conflicts with main's craft-libs bump (craft-i18n follows it to
c5a1cbf), craft-update's app icon, the QAT Alt+n shortcuts, the Format
Shape effect presets and Size tab, and the docs headers. New interface
labels from main go through tl!.

Track a missing catalog directory.
If the first build runs before the checkout exists, this returns before registering the path. A later checkout at the same CRAFT_I18N_DIR will not rerun the build script, so the build remains English-only until another tracked input changes or the build is cleaned. Register the path or an existing parent before this read. (doc.rust-lang.org)

Thanks for this. The approach matches the WordCraft pilot, and the wiring looks right. There's one blocker before it can merge.
Blocker: the pinned craft-i18n commit has no DeckCraft catalog.craft-i18n.rev points at storytold/craft-i18n@1935849 (main, 27 Oct). No locale there has a deckcraft.tsv. Once craft-i18n.rev exists, craft-common-actions checks craft-i18n out at that commit with CRAFT_I18N_REQUIRED=1. build.rs then stops the build:
error: deckcraft-ui-egui@0.13.1: CRAFT_I18N_DIR: …/locales has no locale with a deckcraft.tsv; the interface is English only
error: build script logged errors
I reproduced this locally (cargo check -p deckcraft-ui-egui with those two variables, at the pinned commit). So every CI and release build would fail as soon as this merges, and the description's "CI and every existing build are unchanged" doesn't hold. The same build against storytold/craft-i18n#71's head passes.
Fix: we'll merge storytold/craft-i18n#71 first, then please move craft-i18n.rev to that merge commit. (The fork's CI workflows also still need a maintainer to approve them, so CI hasn't run on 5b50cc8 yet.)
Minor, not blocking:
crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon/qat.rs:131: the (None, None) case of tip() returns q.label without tl!. On macOS, where there's no Alt+number, every toolbar item without a shortcut has an English tooltip.
crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon/qat.rs:188: ribbon_menu saves the label with \n replaced by a space, so tl!(&q.label) misses catalog keys such as New\nSlide, and those toolbar items stay English.
crates/ui-egui/src/state.rs:163: in a build without catalogs (any local build without CRAFT_I18N_DIR), a saved "language": "de" is quietly rewritten to auto and saved. Someone who switches between a release and a local build loses their choice. Keeping an unknown but well-formed code, and only resolving it when looking up the language, would avoid this.
Checked and fine: dialog windows keep explicit ids and ribbon tab ids stay English, so switching language doesn't reset dialogs. The control channel and command palette dispatch by id. The language setting is checked when ui.json loads and when app.language is called. Cancel in Preferences restores the previous language. The language is set each frame, before anything is drawn.
Not checked: I didn't run the app or the test suite. I read in full i18n.rs, build.rs, the preferences, commands and state changes, widgets.rs, ribbon.rs, status.rs, menus.rs and qat.rs. The remaining files are mostly literal → tl!(…) swaps, which I skimmed.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)
I read the head of the diff: a .gitattributes line (craft-i18n.rev text eol=lf) and the manifest, which pins craft libraries by git revision; per the title interface languages now come from craft-i18n, with English and German (#15). Using the shared catalogue repository is the organisation's direction. The pinned revision file (craft-i18n.rev) must be updated with the catalogues in one step, and the app must fall back to English for a missing key and a missing language. The build must not fetch the catalogue over the network at run time. A German catalogue is related to deckcraft's own German strings, so check that none are lost in the move (a test listing the English keys with no German entry). A German speaker should review the translations against PowerPoint's German terms. I did not read the code. Nothing was run.
I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.
Toolbar labels saved from a two-line ribbon caption (New Slide) find
their catalog row, the toolbar's add/remove menu item is translated,
and a saved language code this build doesn't offer is kept instead of
being reset to auto, so a local build without catalogs doesn't lose a
release's choice.

DeckCraft's interface can now be shown in English or German. By default it follows the system language. Preferences › Interface language offers System language, English and Deutsch, and the
app.languagecommand does the same for the control channel and MCP. Related to #15.This is roadmap step 3d from storytold/craft-i18n#48: DeckCraft reads the shared craft-i18n catalogs, wired the same way as WordCraft's pilot (storytold/wordcraft#4072). That is why there is no

tl!,crates/ui-egui/src/i18n.rs). A string without a translation shows in English.build.rsembedslocales/<lang>/common.tsvanddeckcraft.tsvfromCRAFT_I18N_DIR. A local build without it is English only. Oncecraft-i18n.revexists, CI and releases check out craft-i18n at that commit through craft-common-actions and setCRAFT_I18N_REQUIRED=1. A checkout without a DeckCraft catalog then stops the build, so the pin must point to a commit that has one (see Before merge).languageinui.jsonisauto(follow the system;DECKCRAFT_LANGUAGEoverrides) or a code. A well-formed code this build doesn't offer (for exampledein a local build without catalogs) is kept, and the interface follows the system until that code is offered. Anything else is reset toauto.
