Stacked on #1488 (the craft-i18n migration): only the last three commits are new here. The Russian catalog itself is storytold/craft-i18n#87. #1488 currently conflicts with main; this branch will follow it when it is updated.

Change

  • LANGUAGES gains ru (ru-RU, ru-SK, ru-UA and ru_RU.UTF-8 resolve to it). Cyrillic needs no font work: the interface fonts already cover it.
  • Tests: the_russian_catalog_translates_core_labels checks shared and DeckCraft rows, a two-line ribbon label, the Slide {n} of {total} status line and that ru-SK resolves to Russian (skipped without CRAFT_I18N_DIR); the language list test expects ru only when it is embedded, as i18n: offer Simplified Chinese (stacked on #1488) #1530 and i18n: offer Turkish; translate the transition and animation galleries #1540 do.
  • Docs: localization-parity.md, gaps.md and ROADMAP.md list Russian next to German.
  • Review follow-ups (second commit): the close and quit questions are looked up before the document name is filled in (the quit question counts presentations with a plural); the slide-size labels and orientation choices, the Background and Format Shape fill choices, the animation start choices, the File tab's square buttons and the Size and Position fields go through the catalog; spinners read numbers as the interface language writes them (craft_i18n::parse_number: 0,5 in Russian, 1,000 in English); the app.language description lists ru.

How it was checked

  • cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy -p deckcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -D warnings (with the Russian catalogs embedded): clean.
  • CRAFT_I18N_DIR=<craft-i18n with storytold/craft-i18n#87> CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts> cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui: 464 passed, 4 ignored, including the_russian_catalog_translates_core_labels.
  • The same suite without CRAFT_I18N_DIR: 464 passed, 4 ignored (English-only build unchanged).
  • cargo check -p deckcraft-ui-egui --target wasm32-unknown-unknown: passes.
  • Rendered the interface in Russian through the test harness (screenshots below): the tabs, ribbon, notes pane and status bar draw in Russian with the interface fonts, no missing glyphs. The transition and animation gallery names stay English until i18n: offer Turkish; translate the transition and animation galleries #1540's tl! wrapping lands; the catalog already has their rows.
  • Without CRAFT_FONTS_DIR, backstage::tests::start_screen_opens_the_palette_and_preferences fails on this branch and on i18n: interface languages from craft-i18n, English and German (#15) #1488 alike (no glyph for ⌥ in egui's default font); CI checks craft-fonts out, so it is not affected.

…old#15)

DeckCraft reads the shared craft-i18n catalogs (roadmap step 3d there), wired as in WordCraft's
pilot: strings stay English in the code and are looked up when drawn (`tl!`); `build.rs` embeds
`locales/<lang>/common.tsv` and `deckcraft.tsv` from `CRAFT_I18N_DIR` at the commit in
`craft-i18n.rev`, and a build without it is English only.

- `language` setting in ui.json: `auto` (follow the system, `DECKCRAFT_LANGUAGE` overrides) or
a code; Preferences › Interface language and the `app.language` UI command set it, Cancel in
Preferences restores it. Offered: English and German.
- Translated: ribbon tabs and buttons (through the widgets), command palette (found by German
or English name or id), status bar, File tab, dialog titles, buttons, fields and choice
lists, panes. Command ids, tab ids, engine labels returned to scripts, the control channel,
  CLI and MCP stay English.
- Tests: lookup and fallback, setting validation, `app.language`, switching the live UI to a
German fixture and back (tab ids stay English), Preferences Cancel, and that embedded catalogs
  parse cleanly.
- Docs: ATTRIBUTION (craft-i18n), localization-parity, gaps, ROADMAP.

Walkthrough

The UI now embeds optional English, German, and Russian catalogs. Users can select a language through Preferences or app.language. Interface labels use localization lookups, and spinner input parsing follows the current locale.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to b2716

The pinned catalog does not contain the Russian interface, and language command metadata advertises unavailable options. Update the catalog pin and metadata before merging.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to 165ee

The reviewed changes keep language selection separate from document commands and file access. No new security issue was established in those paths. Some uncertainty remains around the external translation dependencies and their production release integration.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new dependency has broad presentation scope within the UI: embedded catalog content can alter text at translated controls. In the reviewed command and panel paths, language selection does not acquire file-read authority or select document-command payloads.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Catalog files enter through a build-controlled directory and are embedded as string data; generated paths and locale codes are escaped as Rust literals. Runtime locale input is matched against offered languages rather than used to construct catalog file paths in the inspected resolver.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The reviewed transition confines failure to language preference and presentation state: invalid commands preserve the prior value, unavailable saved values are normalized, and rendering language is reset from each app's preference. A failed settings write or interrupted process may lose the latest preference, but the inspected language path does not mutate document data or security configuration.

When centimeter units are selected, field looks up Width (cm): and Height (cm):. The Russian catalog contains the {abbr} templates, not those centimeter keys. Translate each template first, then fill {abbr}.

Minor · Accept the decimal comma in spinner input. · widgets.rs:546

crates/ui-egui/src/widgets.rs:546
Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Accept the decimal comma in spinner input.

The spinner filter drops ,, so 1,5 is read as 15. Russian uses , as the decimal separator, so Russian users can enter decimals this way. The spinner then returns the wrong value, ten times the intended one, without an error.

This filter predates this PR. The PR adds Russian to the offered languages, which makes this path more likely to affect those users. A one-line change is enough for the parse path. Replacing , with . before filtering changes input such as 1,000, which becomes 1.0 instead of 1000. This input is unlikely in these fields, because fmt_num never emits thousands separators.

Suggested fix
-            let num: String = text.chars().filter(|c| c.is_ascii_digit() || *c == '.' || *c == '-').collect();
+            let num: String = text.replace(',', ".").chars().filter(|c| c.is_ascii_digit() || *c == '.' || *c == '-').collect();

Pin a catalog revision that contains Russian.

The pinned revision does not contain locales/ru/deckcraft.tsv. build.rs skips that locale, so Lang::all() does not offer ru and the Russian test returns before its assertions. CRAFT_I18N_REQUIRED=1 only requires a valid checkout; it does not require every language in LANGUAGES, so this mismatch can pass CI silently unless the shared workflow adds a separate Russian check.

Update only craft-i18n.rev. The craft-libs revision in Cargo.toml is a separate Rust dependency pin and does not need to match the catalog revision.

Update the craft-i18n revision pin so it points to a verified catalog commit
containing locales/ru/deckcraft.tsv, ensuring Russian is available to
Lang::all(). Change only the revision in craft-i18n.rev; do not alter the
separate craft-libs dependency pin.

Not changed here on purpose: the pin can only point at a craft-i18n commit that contains locales/ru/deckcraft.tsv once storytold/craft-i18n#87 is merged (the German catalog, storytold/craft-i18n#71, is in the same position). The pin moves when the catalogs land.

@JaffarSk24 Understood. The unchanged pin is intentional while storytold/craft-i18n#87 and storytold/craft-i18n#71 await merge. My request to update it in this PR was premature.

The catalog dependency remains pending, not fixed. Once the catalogs merge, the pin update can verify that the selected revision contains locales/ru/deckcraft.tsv.

Thanks for the review. Addressed in 165ee41:

  • app.language description: lists ru now.
  • Save-confirmation questions: the close and quit questions are looked up first and the name filled in after; the quit question counts presentations with a plural ({n} presentation|{n} presentations). The matching rows are in ru: DeckCraft interface catalog (roadmap 3d) craft-i18n#87.
  • ROADMAP.md: records Russian in the header, the language paragraph, the progress log and the revision history.
  • Outside the diff: the Background and Format Shape fill choices, the animation start choices, the File tab's square buttons, the Size and Position fields and the slide-size labels and orientation choices go through tl! now; spinners read a decimal comma as a point.

Not changed here:

Checked again: fmt, clippy -D warnings, the wasm32 check, and cargo test -p deckcraft-ui-egui with and without the Russian catalogs (424 passed each).

Resolve conflicts with main's craft-libs bump (craft-i18n follows it to
c5a1cbf), craft-update's app icon, the QAT Alt+n shortcuts, the Format
Shape effect presets and Size tab, and the docs headers. New interface
labels from main go through tl!.

Toolbar labels saved from a two-line ribbon caption (New Slide) find
their catalog row, the toolbar's add/remove menu item is translated,
and a saved language code this build doesn't offer is kept instead of
being reset to auto, so a local build without catalogs doesn't lose a
release's choice.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Adds `ru` to the offered languages; its catalogs are craft-i18n's
`locales/ru/common.tsv` and `deckcraft.tsv`. A test checks shared and
DeckCraft rows, a two-line ribbon label, a named-placeholder status line
and that `ru-SK` resolves to Russian when the catalogs are embedded, and
the language list test expects `ru` only when it is.
Review follow-ups. The close and quit questions are looked up before the
document name is filled in (the quit question counts presentations with
a plural); the slide-size width and height labels and the orientation
choices, the Background and Format Shape fill choices, the animation
start choices, the File tab's square buttons and the Size and Position
fields now go through the catalog. Spinners read a decimal comma as a
point, as typed in Russian and many other locales. The app.language
description lists ru, and ROADMAP.md records Russian.
The previous commit turned every comma into a decimal point, so 1,000
typed in English became 1. Spinners now read the text with craft-i18n's
parse_number for the current language: 1,000 stays a thousand in
English, 0,5 is a half in Russian, and a lone point is a decimal point
in both. A test covers both languages and unit suffixes.

ReviewerA — source-read COMMENT (not an approval)

I read the head of the diff: Russian is offered, stacked on deckcraft#1488. The same shared-catalogue plumbing as deckcraft#1540: craft-i18n.rev is pinned to LF endings and ATTRIBUTION.md explains that builds embed craft-i18n's catalogues from a checkout at the pinned commit, so the interface is English only without it. The translations belong in craft-i18n and need a native check there; this PR selects the language. Russian plural forms (one, few, many, other) must be supported by the catalogue mechanism, since the usual two-form approach gives wrong grammar for numbers like 2 and 5. I have not run it, and no exact-head CI result exists for this head. Nothing was run.

I ran nothing and have no exact-head CI result for this PR, so this is not an approval. Where a diff was long I read its code hunks rather than every generated or documentation line.

Status: waiting_author.

The Russian test now checks that 1, 2, 5 and 21 presentations take
the one, few, many and one forms from the catalog's @plural row.

Thanks, @FredApps. On plural forms: craft-i18n's lookup picks the form by CLDR's plural rules for the locale, and the Russian @plural rows list all three forms Russian uses for whole numbers (one, few, many); craft-i18n's own tests check that every ru plural row has exactly that many. To show it working end to end here, the_russian_catalog_translates_core_labels now also checks the quit question's count in the latest commit: 1 презентация, 2 презентации, 5 презентаций, 21 презентация. It passes with the Russian catalogs embedded, and fmt and clippy -D warnings are clean.

Set Up Slide Show showed All slides in English while its menu was
closed. Cancel in Preferences now puts the saved language back as it
was, even a code this build doesn't offer, instead of going through
app.language, which refused it and kept the language picked in the
dialog. The Preferences cancel test covers that case.

Do not advertise unavailable language codes.

engine.commands exposes this description to control-channel consumers. Without CRAFT_I18N_DIR, Lang::all() contains only en, so de and ru pass the advertised contract but app.language rejects them. The command returns an error and leaves the setting unchanged. Describe the value as a language code offered by the build.

@coderabbitai On the follow-up about the app.language description in crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs: the auto|en|de list comes from #1488, which this PR is stacked on, and the sibling language PRs extend it the same way (#1530 appends zh-hans). de has exactly the same property there: without CRAFT_I18N_DIR it is listed but rejected. So this PR only appends ru and keeps the base's format. The reply's available field already reports what a given build offers. If the maintainers prefer generic wording, it is a one-line change best made in #1488 so all the language PRs inherit it.

@JaffarSk24 Agreed. The available field uses i18n::Lang::all(), and the validation error uses the same list of offered languages.

Given the inherited format from #1488, I withdraw my request to change the description in this PR. No change is needed here. If maintainers prefer generic wording, #1488 is the appropriate place to make that change.
