Add Background draws behind the page content, so on a page that first fills itself with opaque white (browsers' Save as PDF, print drivers) the background was hidden completely and the tool looked broken. - pdfcraft-edit: new `backdrop` module. A strictly detected backdrop (one axis-aligned `re`, opaque white in a device colour space, painted before anything else and covering the crop box) is replaced by turning that one fill into `n` in a per-page copy of its stream; the original stream is left untouched for other pages. Remove background restores it, unless the copy was edited since. Page-sized pictures (scans) are reported only. - Background gains `replace_backdrop` (default on); the default colour is a visible light yellow instead of near-white. - Dialog: offers to replace the backdrop, warns about scanned pages, checks pages a few per frame, preview draws text over the colour. - Automation: `doc_background` takes `replace_backdrop`; new read-only `doc_backdrops` lists pages with a backdrop. Acrobat's behaviour on such pages is unobserved; recorded as our choice in parity/. Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
The six new dialog strings (the backdrop offer, its note, the scan
warning and "Checking pages…") were missing from every catalogue, which
the *_covers_ui_literals tests require. Languages with several plural
forms use the "label: {n}" pattern so any count reads correctly.

The 22 interface catalogues are registered assets; adding the Add Background strings changed their SHA-256. Provenance is unchanged (contributor-original translations). Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Review of head 93df949. Requesting changes for one measured problem, a claim in the description that does not hold. The rest of the change checked out.
Finding (blocking): the Background dialog's check is quadratic in page count, so "long documents never stall it" is not true.
crates/edit/src/backdrop.rs:127-128: page_of does pdfcraft_model::pages(doc).into_iter().nth(page), which builds every Page (cloning each page dictionary) to return one. scan/page_backdrop call it once per page, and BackdropCheck::update in crates/ui-egui/src/marks_ui.rs (around line 113) calls doc.page_backdrop(p) for 24 pages every frame. So each frame costs 24 x O(pages).
I measured it with a throwaway test (not part of the PR): synthetic documents with a flat page tree, one tiny content stream per page that starts with a white fill, release build, calling pdfcraft_edit::page_backdrop. The host was a busy shared machine, so read the absolute times as pessimistic; the growth is the point.
| pages | 24 pages (one dialog frame) | all pages |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 9 ms | 0.34 s |
| 5,000 | 93 ms | 18.7 s |
| 20,000 | 385 ms | 316 s |
So at 5,000 pages the dialog spends about 90 ms of every frame on the check for roughly 200 frames, and at 20,000 pages about 0.4 s a frame for around 800 frames, while "Checking pages..." is shown. Suggested fix: look the page up lazily (stop at the n-th page instead of collecting all), or build the page list once per BackdropCheck::update call and pass it down. A regression test could count how many pages one page_backdrop call materialises, or assert a generous time bound on a few thousand pages. (add_background itself has the same page_list(doc)[i] shape per page; that is older code and I am not asking for it to change here.)
Verification (Linux validation host, this exact head; hosted CI is also green on ubuntu, windows, wasm32 and licences):
cargo fmt --all -- --check: clean.cargo test -p pdfcraft-edit: 166 passed.-p pdfcraft-engine: 274 passed, 1 ignored.-p pdfcraft-automation: all suites passed, includingtests/backdrop.rs.cargo test -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --no-fail-fast: 1279 passed, 1 failed, 5 ignored. The failure issystem_fonts::tests::a_script_fallback_is_the_first_candidate_with_the_probe, in a file this PR does not touch. It fails only because my harness setsPDFCRAFT_SYSTEM_FONTS=0; with that variable unset it passes.marks::the_background_dialog_offers_to_replace_a_white_backdrop_and_warns_about_scanspasses.cargo clippy -p pdfcraft-edit -p pdfcraft-engine -p pdfcraft-automation -p pdfcraft-ui-egui --all-targets -- -D warnings: clean.cargo xtask layers,cargo xtask assets,cargo xtask parity --partial: pass.cargo check --target wasm32-unknown-unknownfor edit and engine: pass.- Red check: I kept every test and neutralised only the call site (
if bg.replace_backdropbecameif false && bg.replace_backdropinadd_background). All three new test layers then fail at their intended assertions, not at compilation: the edit unit test atbackdrop_tests.rs:82(left... re f Q ..., right... re n Q ...), the automation test attests/backdrop.rs:93(left [255,255,255], right [255,0,0]), and the dialog test atui_group/marks.rs:159(left Some(Fill), right None). - I read all of
backdrop.rsfor never-crash: no unwrap/expect/panic or unchecked indexing outside tests; scan, operator, nesting and byte caps are in place; NaN/overflow cases fall to "not a backdrop".
Not verified: Acrobat's or other viewers' behaviour on such pages (the PR says it is unobserved); the "checked by eye in the app" claim; the other languages' translations beyond placeholders being kept ({n} is present in all 22 files). Replacing the backdrop by default edits page content in a copy; the PR flags this itself as a design decision for a human to confirm. Minor: the white test accepts components of 0.98 or more, so a very light grey fill (the tests use 0.99 g) is replaced too.
Review of storytold#2815: `page_of` built every page to return one, and the Add Background dialog checked 24 pages a frame that way, so a frame cost 24 page-tree walks (93 ms at 5,000 pages, 385 ms at 20,000). - `page_backdrops(doc, pages)` walks the tree once for a batch; the dialog checks one batch a frame and `doc_backdrops` one batch in all. A page past the end answers None without hiding the others (the viewer's page count can disagree with the page tree's). - `scan` and `replace` take the page; `add_background` no longer walks the tree twice more per page to replace a backdrop. - Tests: 4,000 pages checked in one batch under a generous bound (17.6 s with the old lookup), batch order and missing pages, and a background over several pages sharing streams, replaced and restored. Thanks, @FredApps. The finding was right: What changed
Measured in release on synthetic flat page trees, the same shape as your bench, reproduced independently:
So a frame is one walk now. 20,000 pages is still a little over a 16 ms frame, and the whole check still grows with the square of the page count, just 24× more slowly. Fully linear would mean keeping the page list across frames. I left that out to keep the change small, and the description now states these numbers instead of "never stall". Tests
All of these pass, along with On the 0.98 tolerance: that's deliberate. Writers emit |

Re-reviewed 0b63f5a after review 5555444556. The requested per-frame batching change is implemented: BackdropCheck collects at most 24 distinct pending pages and makes one batch call, so page discovery is shared within a frame instead of repeated for every page. The automation command also uses one batch; invalid page indices do not erase valid answers. The updated description correctly acknowledges that the complete multi-frame scan remains quadratic and that very large documents may still exceed a frame budget. I am not treating this as fully linear or stall-free.
Verified hosted CI run 38999958158 at this head completed successfully. Ubuntu and Windows logs each show edit 169 passed and engine 274 passed/1 ignored, including the batch/order/missing-page and shared-stream restoration tests. The automation backdrop test and UI Background dialog test explicitly passed on both jobs. WASM and licences succeeded; fuzz was skipped. I did not independently rerun the author's timing benchmarks or the native app.
No remaining blocker from the earlier request. Retaining the page list across frames and the older add_background page-list costs are follow-up performance work, not claims resolved by this patch. The documented near-white threshold and unobserved Acrobat behavior remain limitations.

Review of storytold#2815 (CodeRabbit): - A content stream whose bytes live in an external file (`/F`) draws those, not its inline bytes, so it is never taken for a backdrop. - The copy keeps the original stream dictionary, unknown entries included, less `Length` and `DL` (Flate re-encodes it); it had started from an empty dictionary. - Every `/Contents` slot that lists the original stream gets the copy: a page listing the same stream twice painted the white fill again over the background. - The Background dialog starts with replacing on each time it opens. Update restores backdrops before re-applying, so a replaced page shows no fill and no checkbox, and a choice left off from an earlier dialog hid the background again unseen. Read the whole change apart from the catalog rows and the checksum updates. Add Background now shows on pages that paint their own white backdrop (browser and print-driver PDFs), and says so for scans.
- Detection is strict, as documented: the first painting operator must be a single rectangle fill, opaque (
ca,SMaskandBMchecked), in a white device colour, axis-aligned, with a known rectangular clip, covering the crop box. Anything else is treated as real content. Paths, text, strokes andshbefore it end the search, qdepth and the amount scanned are bounded, and a stream whose bytes live in an external file is left alone. - Replacement turns the one fill operator into
nin a copy of that content stream (the original may be shared by other pages), with the byte offset recorded in/PCBackdrop. The copy drops the old length and decode parameters, and a stream listed twice is replaced in both slots. - Removing the background restores the original only when the copy still equals the original with that one operator changed, so an edited copy is kept and a bad offset can only mean no restore, never corrupted content. Undo works through the normal snapshot.
- A page-sized picture (a scan) is only reported, in the dialog and by
doc_backdrops; the dialog checks 24 pages a frame, and the checkbox starts on each time it opens.
The default background colour changes to a stronger yellow so it is visible on screen, which the updated test follows. CI is green at this head. Approving.
…-by-page-backdrop Conflicts: - crates/edit/src/lib.rs: keep both `backdrop` (this branch) and main's new `background` module (storytold#2992, page background colour for Export to Word). - crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/marks_ui.rs: union of the imports (main added BlockKey, block_overlapping and FontFamily). - ATTRIBUTION.toml: catalogue hashes recomputed. Main added eleven catalogues since this branch was cut (ca, ckb, fi, hi, id, ko, lo, nb, ro, sq, th), and their coverage tests require every UI literal, so the six Add Background backdrop messages are translated in them too. I'm converting this back to a draft after discovering that /PCBackdrop can leak redacted content. Fixing and will reopen when handled. |
The tag on a page's backdrop copy, `/PCBackdrop << /Original ref /At /Len >>`, kept the page's original content stream reachable. After Add background, then Redact (or Remove Hidden Information, or Edit text) and a full save, the text taken off the page was still in the file, in the original stream the tag pointed at. Text extraction didn't show it; reading the file's bytes did. Restore also gave up after any edit, so the fill stayed off without a word. The tag is now `/PCBackdrop << /Index n /Op (f) /Before <SHA-256> /Was [num gen] >>`: how many of the copy's operators come before the `n`, the fill it stands in for, a hash of those operators by value (redaction writes the stream out again with other spacing), and the original's number as two integers, which keep nothing alive. Remove background turns the fill back on in the copy when the operators before it still hash the same and a scan with the fill restored finds it painted first, covering the page. Edits and redactions after the fill are kept. When the original stream is still there with the same bytes, the page points at it again. Otherwise the copy stays as it is, and Remove background says which pages keep their own backdrop off: `EditNotice::BackdropsLeftOff` (engine), a toast in the app, `warnings` from `doc_remove_marks`. `edit_notices` holds `EditNotice` now, with the undrawn-text notice as one of its kinds. The two new UI strings are in all 33 catalogues. `sha2` (already in the lock file) becomes a dependency of `pdfcraft-edit`. Tests, each seen failing with its piece of the fix reverted: - `the_tag_holds_no_reference_and_a_full_save_keeps_no_second_copy_of_the_page` and `removed_text_leaves_the_file_when_a_background_replaced_the_pages_backdrop` (automation, redaction and Remove Hidden Information through a full save): fail with `/Original` back. - `a_fill_that_would_cover_content_painted_before_it_stays_off`: fails without the re-scan. - `a_copy_written_out_again_with_other_spacing_still_comes_back` and the automation test: fail when the raw bytes are hashed instead of the operators. - `an_edit_after_the_fill_is_kept_and_the_backdrop_still_comes_back`: fails under the old rule (only an unchanged copy comes back). - `remove_background_names_the_pages_whose_own_backdrop_stays_off` (engine), `remove_background_warns_about_pages_whose_own_backdrop_stays_off` (automation), `remove_background_says_which_pages_keep_their_own_backdrop_off` (UI): fail without the notice. - `a_change_before_the_fill_leaves_it_off_and_names_the_page`, `a_tag_that_does_not_add_up_is_left_alone` (hostile and old-format tags, never a panic), `operators_hash_by_value_not_by_spelling`. …paint their own white backdrop
…paint their own white backdrop
The dialog previews a colour as a tint of the page's thumbnail (main's storytold#3009). It tinted every page, so with Replace unticked a page that keeps its own white backdrop previewed coloured, though OK leaves it white. A page a picture covers (a scan) previewed coloured too. background_tint() now shows no colour where the page will still hide the background after OK: a scan, or a white backdrop with Replace unticked. It reads the page from the dialog's backdrop check (BackdropCheck::found, for the current version of the document only); a page the check hasn't reached yet previews coloured, as before. Tests, both seen failing with the fix reverted: - marks_ui::tests::the_preview_shows_a_background_only_where_ok_lets_it_show (the rule); - it::marks::the_background_preview_follows_the_replace_checkbox (what the dialog paints, per page, ticked and unticked). Re-reviewed current head 120de55 while verifying the seven-PR combined build. Requesting changes for two reproduced false positives in backdrop detection. The preview-checkbox fix is present and its hosted tests pass, but the detector can still remove real content by default.
Validation on this exact head: five temporary focused pdfcraft-edit tests, 2 passed and 3 failed. Controls passed for a genuinely opaque white fill and a single translucent graphics state. Sequential partial graphics states and both TR/TR2 transfer functions failed. Actual generated PDFs rendered with Poppler confirm the visible changes; these are not merely source-level predictions. Tests were kept in an isolated validation checkout, not pushed.
Combined CI https://github.com/alehel/pdfcraft/actions/runs/40133174293 is genuinely green at 9a8af28 and contains this head: Linux 5,078 passed/22 skipped, Windows 5,051 passed/23 ignored. Those existing tests do not cover these cases. No independent native GUI session or private 57-check protocol verification claimed. The older per-frame batching fix is not being reopened.

[P2] Preserve graphics-state fields omitted by a later gs
A gs dictionary changes only the keys it contains, but this assignment replaces the accumulated opacity decision and opaque_state treats omitted ca/SMask/BM as defaults. Reproduced with /Transparent << /ca 0.5 >>, /LineOnly << /LW 2 >> and content /Transparent gs /LineOnly gs 1 g 0 0 300 200 re f: page_backdrop incorrectly reports Fill and Add Background rewrites f to n. The single /Transparent case is correctly preserved. With a red background and replacement disabled, Poppler renders [255,128,128]; default replacement renders [255,0,0], losing the original translucent paint. Track the relevant graphics-state components across partial updates (and q/Q), rather than resetting omitted fields. Add a sequential-gs regression.

[P2] Reject or evaluate transfer functions before classifying a white fill
Opaque input colour does not prove the rendered fill is white when ExtGState supplies TR or TR2. This predicate ignores both, while the renderer applies them. Reproduced separately for TR and TR2 using a Type 2 function /Domain [0 1] /C0 [1] /C1 [0] /N 1 and a full-page 1 g ... re f: the page visibly paints black, yet page_backdrop returns Fill and default Add Background replaces f with n. Poppler renders the replacement-disabled result black and the default result red. Conservatively decline replacement with a non-identity transfer function (preserving state and TR2 precedence), or evaluate it before deciding the fill is white. Add both TR and TR2 regression coverage.
What this changes
A YouTube review showed Add Background "not working". It works on plain pages, but on a page that first fills itself with opaque white (browsers' Save as PDF, print drivers, many generators), the background is drawn behind that fill and is completely hidden. A near-white default colour (
[1, 1, 0.85]) made it look broken even where it did work.pdfcraft-edit: newbackdropmodule. Strict detection: onere, axis-aligned, opaque white in DeviceGray/RGB/CMYK, painted before anything else, covering the crop box (clip and ExtGState honoured). To replace it, that one fill operator becomesnin a per-page copy of its content stream, and the original stream object is left untouched for other pages that share it. The copy carries/PCBackdrop << /Index /Op /Before /Was >>: how many operators come before then, the fill it stands in for, a SHA-256 of those operators by value (spacing and number formatting don't count), and the original's object number as two plain integers. The tag holds no page content and no reference. A page-sized picture (a scan) is reported only, never touched.warningsfromdoc_remove_marks. In the engine,Document::edit_noticesis now aVec<EditNotice>, with the existing undrawn-text notice as one variant.Backgroundgainsreplace_backdrop(default on). The default colour is a light yellow that is visible on screen.doc_backgroundtakesreplace_backdrop. New read-onlydoc_backdropslistsfill/imagepages.doc_backdropschecks its pages in onepage_backdropscall, which walks the page tree once.doc_remove_marksreturnswarningsfor pages whose backdrop stays off.Since the approval: a redaction leak, fixed in
3485e92aTesting a build of this branch found that the first version's tag,
/PCBackdrop << /Original ref /At /Len >>, kept the page's original content stream reachable. After Add background, then Redact (or Remove Hidden Information) and a full save, the text taken off the page was still in the file. Text extraction didn't show it, but anyone reading the file's bytes could:/Originalpointed atRedaction and sanitize keep a rewritten stream's dictionary and strip only
/Lengthand/PCAdded(the same class of leak was fixed for/PCAddedin #1 and indad86bf9). The new key wasn't on that list. Now the tag carries nothing worth stripping, so all four rows are 0. As a bonus, Remove background now also turns the fill back on after Edit text and after redactions, which the first version gave up on silently. How you verified it
