M7: paint a new background over older ones (#3591) - #3595
Merged

Conversation
Marks behind the page content were all inserted at the start of /Contents, so a second background went under the first and the old colour stayed. Backgrounds now come first, then behind-content watermarks, each in the order added. A watermark added after a background no longer disappears under it.

behind_marks so a Watermark is counted as a leading behind mark only when its
stored metadata indicates behind: true; continue recognizing backgrounds as
behind marks and preserve the existing ordering for valid leading marks. Ensure
an on-top watermark remains outside the behind-mark prefix so later behind
watermarks are inserted before it.

…old#3591) On a page with no content of its own, an on-top watermark is the first stream in /Contents, so it was counted with the behind-content marks and a watermark added behind later was drawn over it. Nothing records whether a watermark is behind, so a new behind mark now goes right after the last background, which is always below any on-top watermark. A newer behind watermark goes under older ones again, as before storytold#3591.

What this changes
Fixes #3591. A background added to a page that already has one is now painted over the old one. Every mark behind the page content used to go in at the start of
/Contents, so the new background landed under the old one. Behind the content, backgrounds now come first, in the order added, and then behind-content watermarks, so a watermark added after a background no longer disappears either. On a page with no content of its own, a watermark added behind still goes under one already on top.How you verified it
cargo fmt --check-D warningsonpdfcraft-editcargo test -p pdfcraft-edit(198 passed), plus the background, watermark and mark tests inpdfcraft-engineandpdfcraft-automationThe three new tests in
crates/edit/src/tests.rseach fail without the fix. The first two fail onmain, with the marks in the order[green, blue, content]and[green, watermark, blue, content]. The third,a_watermark_behind_goes_under_one_on_top_of_a_page_without_content, covers the case CodeRabbit found in the first commit. I also checked end to end withpdfcraft-cli run --script: a second Add now renders the new colour, and a behind-content watermark added after a background is visible.Never-crash

Anything a reviewer should look at first
The question from the issue: should Add also remove the existing background, the way Update does? This PR only fixes the order, so after a second Add the old fill is still in the file, hidden under the new one. If you want Add to replace, that's a small follow-up in
add_background.#2633 and #2815 change background placement in the same function. I'll rebase on whichever lands first.
