What this changes

Fixes #2992.

The problem. A page coloured with Edit a PDF ▸ Background exported to Word as a white page. The text kept its colour, but the background was gone. export::Page carried only text blocks and images, and the Word writer had nowhere to put a page colour.

The fix

  • pdfcraft_edit::page_background(doc, page) (new crates/edit/src/background.rs) reads the page's content up to the first thing it paints. That first paint is a page background when it is:

    • an opaque fill: ca 1, no soft mask, Normal blend
    • in a plain gray, RGB or CMYK colour (g/rg/k, or cs+sc in those spaces)
    • of a path with one rectangle covering the visible page (crop box, within 0.5 %), under the current cm
    • not clipped smaller

    Anything else painted first (text, a stroke, an image, a shading), a translucent or blended fill, a pattern, a fill with a hole, or a fill that doesn't cover the page gives None. This is how Edit a PDF ▸ Background draws a colour, and how many producers fill their pages.

  • export::Page::background carries the colour. The engine fills it in export_pages.

  • The Word writer sets it as the document's page colour: <w:background w:color="…"/> before <w:body>, plus a word/settings.xml with <w:displayBackgroundShape/>, which Word needs before it shows a background. It's added when every page shares one non-white colour. Word has a single background per document, so differing colours are left out rather than applying one page's colour to all.

HTML, RTF and PowerPoint exports are unchanged. They could use Page::background too, as per-page backgrounds, in a follow-up.

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --check
  • cargo clippy -p pdfcraft-edit -p pdfcraft-export -p pdfcraft-engine -j 8 --all-targets -- -D warnings
  • Tests:
    • cargo test -p pdfcraft-edit: 157 passed
    • -p pdfcraft-export: 27 passed
    • -p pdfcraft-engine --lib: 275 passed
    • -p pdfcraft-automation --test automation export: 6 passed
  • cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask parity

New tests

  • edit::a_page_painted_first_with_a_full_page_fill_has_that_background:
    • Edit ▸ Background's fill under existing text, also on a turned page
    • a producer's white page fill
    • CMYK covering the crop box, cs/sc, and a fill under a cm
    • a page-sized clip
    • None for: text first, half a page, two halves (not one covering rectangle), translucent, blended, clipped to a corner, a pattern, a stroke first, a non-rectangle path, and a page fill with a hole
  • export::docx_keeps_a_shared_page_background: w:background, settings.xml, its content type and its relationship are written for a shared colour, and none of them for differing, missing or white backgrounds.
  • engine::exporting_to_word_keeps_the_page_background: a text page plus Edit ▸ Background exports with the colour and the text, and with settings.xml.

Seen failing: each of these 10 reverts makes a test fail:

  • ignoring the opacity
  • ignoring the blend mode or soft mask
  • ignoring the clip
  • no coverage check
  • strokes not stopping the search
  • curved paths accepted (an earlier version of the test missed this one, so I added the page-fill-with-a-hole case)
  • differing colours accepted
  • white accepted
  • no settings part
  • the engine not filling in the field

parity/acrobat-features.toml (create.export-docx) notes and evidence are updated.

Never-crash

  • No unwrap/expect/indexing outside tests. The q stack is capped at 64 (deeper saves are counted, not stored). Colours are clamped, and non-finite opacity counts as 0.
  • No unsafe

Provenance

  • No assets or copied code. w:background and w:displayBackgroundShape are from ECMA-376 (WordprocessingML).

Security

  • No paths, channels or network touched

Anything a reviewer should look at first

  • Only the first paint counts. A page that draws its background later (after invisible text, say) isn't detected. Forms aren't entered.
  • Output checked by XML structure only. I haven't opened the exported .docx in Word.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Word exports now preserve a shared, non-white page background when every page has the same color.
    • Full-page opaque fills painted first are recognized as page backgrounds when their color and coverage can be reliably identified.
    • Page text remains included alongside exported background colors.
  • Limitations
    • Backgrounds that differ between pages, are white, translucent, patterned, partial, or otherwise unsupported are not exported.
    • Only solid gray, RGB, and CMYK fills are recognized.

📝 Walkthrough

The edit crate detects qualifying PDF page backgrounds. The engine adds detected colors to exported pages. Word export writes a document background when every page has the same non-white color.

Changes: Page background export

Layer / File(s) Summary
Detect PDF page backgrounds
crates/edit/src/background.rs, crates/edit/src/lib.rs, crates/edit/src/text.rs, crates/edit/src/tests.rs
The edit crate exposes page_background. It recognizes qualifying opaque gray, RGB, or CMYK fills that cover the crop box. Tests cover transforms, clipping, paint order, color properties, and state limits.
Pass backgrounds to export pages
crates/export/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/compare.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs, crates/export/src/pptx.rs
The export page model gains an optional background color. The engine includes detected colors in exported pages. Tests verify exported page backgrounds and initialize page fixtures.
Write shared backgrounds to Word
crates/export/src/lib.rs, parity/acrobat-features.toml
Word export writes a shared non-white page color and the required settings parts. Tests and parity evidence cover shared, missing, differing, and white backgrounds.

No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new attacker-controlled influence is confined to background interpretation and the appearance of the generated document. The inspected path reads the supplied PDF and returns metadata or output bytes; it introduces no credential, tenant-selection, network-destination, or source-document mutation capability.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — PDF-derived color values do not become arbitrary XML attributes or relationship targets. rgb8 clamps finite components and maps non-finite values to zero; word_background formats exactly three bytes as hexadecimal. The settings relationship and package filenames are fixed strings.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Background selection, its content-type declaration, its relationship, and settings.xml all use the same local page_colour decision. They are assembled within one DOCX invocation before the byte vector is returned, rather than through a shared mutable or persistent multi-step transition.

Explanation

Issue #2992 requires the Edit a PDF background colour to remain visible in Word behind existing text. page_background detects supported first-painted full-page opaque fills. export_pages stores the colour on Page::background. Word export writes one shared non-white w:background and w:displayBackgroundShape. The edit, export, and engine regression tests cover detection, wiring, and DOCX output. The coding requirements are satisfied.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within issue #2992. The detector, export metadata, Word package parts, engine wiring, regression tests, fixture updates, and parity evidence support page-background export. HTML, RTF, and PowerPoint behavior remains unchanged. Omitting differing page colours is required because Word supports one document-level background.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Apply polygon containment to the clip path as well as the fill path.

W records the transformed rectangle with bbox, and n stores only the intersection of that axis-aligned box in st.clip. A rotated or sheared clip can therefore pass covers(&c, &crop) while excluding crop corners. A following opaque full-page fill can return its colour, which can become Word's document-wide background.

Use the shared transformed-polygon representation and containment check for both st.clip and fill rectangles. This is the same geometry correction as the fill-rectangle fix, not a separate clip-specific workaround.

Review on storytold#2994: fill rectangles and the clip were kept as their page-space
bounding boxes, so a rectangle turned or sheared by the CTM could pass as
covering the page while leaving its corners out, and a following fill became
Word's page colour. Each rectangle is now kept as its four page-space
corners, the clip as the rectangles it intersects, and the crop box counts as
covered when its corners lie inside each.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff comment Apply polygon containment to the clip path as well as the fill path: agreed, fixed in 11d815d. It applied to the fill rectangles too.

Before (7092878). Both shapes were kept as page-space bounding boxes:

  • each re was pushed as bbox(&st.ctm, …) (crates/edit/src/background.rs:101, with bbox at :171);
  • the clip was the intersection of those boxes (:110).

Now (11d815d).

  • Each re is kept as its four page-space corners, Quad (background.rs:17), built by quad() (:184).
  • The clip is the list of rectangles it intersects (:118), up to MAX_CLIPS = 64 (:13). Past that it counts as unknown.
  • The page counts as covered when covers() (:190) finds every crop-box corner, pulled in by the existing 0.5% tolerance, inside each clip rectangle (:139) and inside one of the fill's rectangles.

Regressions. In a_page_painted_first_with_a_full_page_fill_has_that_background (crates/edit/src/tests.rs:4808), a rectangle is turned 45° about the centre of the 500 × 700 crop box. Its bounding box covers the crop box, but along the diagonals it reaches only 354 from the centre, short of the corners. Run with cargo test -p pdfcraft-edit --lib a_page_painted_first.

  • As a fill (tests.rs:4867): no background. With 7092878's background.rs this case returned Some([1.0, 0.0, 0.0]).
  • As a clip: no background. Checked separately, with the fill case removed: 7092878 returns Some([1.0, 0.0, 0.0]) for it too.
  • The same rectangle reaching 707: a background, both as a fill and as a clip.

Mutation batch. 11 mutants against cargo test -p pdfcraft-edit --lib background; 10 are killed:

  • clip ignored;
  • clip any-of;
  • clip not kept;
  • cap removed;
  • corner any-of;
  • edge any-of;
  • no orientation sign;
  • strict edge;
  • no tolerance;
  • outward tolerance.

The cap and orientation mutants were killed only after I added cases for 65 clips and a rectangle with negative width. The survivor is the zero-area guard in covers(). That one is my inference rather than a test: a degenerate quad's edges give crossings of both signs for a point off the line, so it already fails the edge test.

@mtlcl410 Thanks for the detailed explanation. I checked the implementation and regression cases. Both fills and clips now use page-space quadrilaterals. Coverage requires containment within every clipping rectangle and at least one fill rectangle.

The rotated-fill and rotated-clip cases cover the bounding-box error I flagged. This addresses my concern. I did not rerun the tests or mutation checks.

A page coloured with Edit a PDF > Background exported to Word as a
white page: export pages carried text and images only, and the Word
section has no page colour.

- pdfcraft-edit `page_background`: the colour of the first thing a
  page paints, when that is an opaque fill (no soft mask, Normal blend)
  in a plain gray, RGB or CMYK colour, of a path with a rectangle
  covering the visible page, not clipped smaller; `None` otherwise.
- `export::Page::background` carries it; the Word writer sets it as
  the document background (`w:background`, plus the
  `w:displayBackgroundShape` setting Word needs to show it) when every
  page shares one non-white colour. Word has one background per
  document, so differing colours are left out.

Read the whole diff: page_background (first paint only, opaque plain-colour fill, with the rectangle-winding, clip, rotation and 64-limit cases), the Page.background field threaded through the compare and export code, and word_background, which writes a Word page colour only when every page shares one non-white colour, together with settings.xml and its relationship. The test table is thorough. CI is green at this head.

One nit, not blocking: in crates/export/src/lib.rs the new docx_keeps_a_shared_page_background test was inserted between the doc comment "One part of a package written by [Zip], inflated." and fn part, so that comment now documents the test and part lost it. Moving the test above the comment fixes it.
