feat: support Acrobat JavaScript link actions and contextual menus - #2081
PDFs can use link JavaScript to choose a destination through a contextual menu. This PR extends PdfCraft's existing Rust/Boa implementation to execute those actions and display native, non-modal egui menus. It is generic PDF behavior, with no document-generator-specific handling or new runtime dependency.
Review head:62f2167b, published by a normal fast-forward from 2d524f78 on October 24, 2026. Its parent is the previously validated synchronization merge, which integrates upstream main d4454108 and preserves the published history. GitHub reports no merge conflict; remote checks still require maintainer action as noted below.
Supported behavior
Extract /Subtype /Link /A /S /JavaScript actions, including direct/indirect PDF strings, encoded text and compressed streams. Malformed, cyclic or oversized operands remain unsupported rather than executable. Saving/reopening preserves the original action dictionaries.
Prepare an immutable document/field snapshot. Initialize named document scripts under Doc/Open in a fresh context, then execute the action with the Acrobat Link / Mouse Up event and a document target. This is initialization on an explicit link activation, not automatic execution of catalog OpenAction.
Implement the supported app.popUpMenuEx() subset: nested menus, separators, enabled/disabled and marked items, cName/cReturn (including empty values), validated leaf selections and null cancellation.
Keep Boa on its worker while egui owns drawing/input. A reply channel resumes the same synchronous JavaScript invocation without replay or source rewriting, while the UI thread remains responsive.
Anchor menus at the annotation activation position, constrain them to the viewport and support zoom/DPI, scrolling and keyboard/submenu navigation. Switching annotations works with one click. JavaScript tips cannot cover/intercept the menu; ordinary link/comment and signature-badge feedback remain available.
Apply pageNum navigation through the viewer and existing history. app.launchURL() returns a URL request handled through the existing allowlist/consent flow. Restricted app.openDoc(cPath) or app.openDoc({cPath: ...}) returns a deferred local-PDF request; it immediately returns null, not a live Acrobat Doc.
Expose link_run_javascript {doc, page, index, menu_choices?} through the shared CLI/MCP tool table, using one-based link_list numbering. It reports menus, alerts, console, requests and errors. Omitted choices return null to that popup; the script can resume and commit edits. Forged choices fail closed. Headless execution does not perform external requests.
The technical contract, engine API, worker API and automation README describe the implementation. The existing field, button, console and XFA execution model is retained, with implicit field OpenDoc requests now filtered as described below; those synchronous hosts do not gain the native Link menu. Existing events retain their field/null targets and initialize under their actual event, without a synthetic Open.
Lifecycle and security boundaries
The desktop host distinguishes Running, AwaitingChoice and Accepted:
Incidental focus/view changes, outside interaction and Escape cannot discard a running result before its first menu or after an accepted choice. They have no menu to dismiss and retain normal document shortcuts.
A first/subsequent menu captures the current view and starts a geometry-sensitive wait. Focus loss, a blocking dialog, changed view or outside interaction still cancels an unanswered menu. A timed-out/null continuation is not allowed to commit an unchosen action.
Cancellation retires the receiver, replies null to waiting/later menus and discards later effects. It does not terminate the VM.
A new explicit activation may supersede an unaccepted action. An accepted action finishes before the latest queued activation is considered. The desktop retains at most three live execution channels.
Active document identity, generation and JavaScript enablement remain required in both polling and UI passes; the engine revalidates before applying effects. Closing/switching documents, edits/Undo or disabling JavaScript invalidate late results. Form edits/resets use the existing permission-checked, single Undo batch. Failed Link scripts retain diagnostics but commit no edits or external requests.
Boa receives no filesystem, process or direct network API here. Script OpenDoc requests require consent including relative paths, then the existing local-PDF validation, size/password and permission checks. Windows /C/path and /C:/path normalize to C:/path; URL/UNC/network paths and nonempty cFS or non-null oDoc options are refused. Automation keeps --root; it returns requests as data rather than opening them.
Inspection caps each raw string or decoded-stream operand at 256 KiB. After PDF text decoding, retained UTF-8 Link sources share a 4 MiB document budget, with diagnostics on refusal. Rejected stream decodes have a per-inspection FIFO cache of 4,096 resolved identities; failures consume no source budget, so later valid scripts remain available. Document initialization is limited to 1,024 scripts / 1 MiB. Menus have at most 1,024 entries, 16 levels, 4,096-byte labels/returns and 32 popup calls; each menu reply wait expires after five minutes.
These limits do not establish a general heap quota, hard wall-time deadline or preemptible worker. Boa limits are cooperative. The public interactive API has no global admission limit; the three-channel cap belongs to the desktop host. Preparation is synchronous; automation waits ten seconds per event rather than enforcing a total deadline. A large shared-runtime result can still exist outside the Host budget, although Link UI discards Outcome.result and the tool does not serialize it. The UI retains the existing single pending external prompt. These are documented limits retained in this scope, not claims of complete resource isolation.
Audit and CodeRabbit follow-up
The full 21-file contribution and the final correction received separate review passes. The historical Qwen/differential findings and Daybreak findings were reclassified against the actual source and external-PR revisions; they are not treated as automatically valid against this HEAD.
Already fixed in 12eed943. A bounded negative cache prevents repeated decompression of shared refused streams without charging failures to the 4 MiB budget. Regression and cache-bound tests cover aliases, later valid sources and eviction.
Fixed in cd8d2c52. Both phase guards now restrict menu dismissal to AwaitingChoice, while document invalidation remains unconditional. Eight new tests cover the transitions below.
Earlier fixes retained here include accepted-result preservation, legacy event/target isolation, logic/UI separation, first-menu shortcut ownership, view-stamp invalidation, popup replacement, retained-source amplification and tooltip interception. Historical regression evidence is not presented as newly rerun mutations.
Examples of disproved claims at the earlier audited revisions include Windows path normalization producing a drive-relative path and the Mouse Up event spelling. The earlier non-XFA SaveAs claim relied on an API that was absent then; integrated upstream now provides app.execMenuItem("SaveAs"). Its regression was adapted to assert deferred requests and the existing read-only/permission boundary. Resource limits and persistent-realm concerns remain architectural boundaries. Findings about older combinations with automatic Open execution are not attributed to #2081 alone.
The mutable CodeRabbit walkthrough historically reported 33.99% docstring coverage for cd8d2c52 (153 functions across 15 files; four unsupported/skipped), after 62.68% for 67375506; the 33.99% result was not independently reproduced. Before this publication it displayed 40.91% (154 functions, 15 files) and a Minimal review assessment covering d1d7c0a2, with all six documentation files skipped as similar. These historical bot measurements are distinct from the fixed-scope independent AST metrics below.
The single requested review of 2d524f78 completed with Review completed, Low merge risk and Moderate security architecture risk for that earlier HEAD. Its two actionable observations are addressed in 62f2167b with the focused tests below. CodeRabbit currently reports Review paused for this new HEAD; this is not a completed review of the correction. No new manual review request, resume, Autofix or thread resolution was performed.
Field-script OpenDoc filtering: confirmed by a failing synthetic test through Calculate, Format, Validate and Keystroke. JsOutput::absorb now drops OpenDoc with a console diagnostic, alongside the existing ShowPanel/SaveAs policy. Explicit Link/Button requests, other requests, editing permissions, consent and Undo remain intact. This fixes unsolicited consent prompts, not a demonstrated automatic file read or consent bypass.
Headless cancellation wording: the documentation now states that missing/null choices cancel only the popup, then JavaScript resumes with null and may commit edits. Desktop cancellation retires the whole waiting action and discards effects. The headless runtime was not changed.
The bot docstring check for the earlier 2d524f78 review was Inconclusive: 32.47% versus an 80% threshold, with 154 functions across 14 files; five skipped (four unsupported, one too large). This is the bot's reported result, not an independently reproduced measurement, and is not equivalent to AST production 65.00% or public API 86.96% on their original fixed scopes. No cause for the changing bot scores or claim of meeting its threshold is inferred.
Running regression: reproduction and coverage
Before the first menu, an action could set a field or produce an error and then lose its completion after focus/view/outside interaction. Polling treated every phase except Accepted as dismissible; drawing applied menu cancellation to Running too, potentially retiring the receiver before reading Complete. Consequences were lost expected edits/results or invisible errors, not demonstrated corruption of an already saved file.
Three initial regressions actually failed before the production fix: Running lost in poll: focus, Running lost in UI: outside, and a missing running failure diagnostic. They then passed. The tests retain a real engine completion at the UI-channel boundary to control event order; they do not pretend a VM is still computing during that retained completion.
Eight new Running regressions and their source locations
All names below use the js_menu::tests::hardening_running_ prefix.
Documentation-only commit d1d7c0a2 reviewed and documented or clarified 20 production functions: 6 critical P0 function contracts and 14 P1 function contracts, plus 1 additional type-level security contract. That commit added 17 new function docstrings and enriched three existing ones without functional/API changes or dependencies. Its AST verification confirmed identical non-documentation Rust tokens across 15 Rust files and all 903 test/helper definitions. The synchronization preserves the 20 function contracts and the additional type contract; 19 function docs are identical and run_here now documents the distinct initializer-error policies and original initializer indices.
Independent documentation coverage
These historical measurements of documentation commit d1d7c0a2 come from our independent Rust AST analyzer, not CodeRabbit. The original touched-function scope and denominators were held fixed. They are not a new CodeRabbit score or a newly expanded measurement of all functions changed by upstream.

The documentation-only sources at d1d7c0a2 passed 4,727 tests, 0 failed, 18 ignored. The current synchronized-source results are reported below; they include upstream tests and must not be interpreted as tests specific to this contribution.
Rustdoc reserve: normal documentation generation on the synchronized sources succeeds with 25 warnings, versus 24 previously. The additional public-to-private link warning (selected_text → DocView::pages_without_text) comes from code and docs identical to main; none was introduced by the documented contribution contracts. The earlier RUSTDOCFLAGS=-D warnings check failed on the 24 pre-existing diagnostics. Strict Rustdoc is not reported as passing, and no lint or warning is suppressed.
Upstream synchronization — October 24, 2026
2d524f78 integrates 462 upstream commits, including #4376, from main d445410807e7eefbe5b96f9662ab963ae8dd2a3a. 15 merge-conflict blocks across 8 files were resolved and the nine overlapping auto-merged files were examined. The published history is retained: no force push or history rewrite.
Preserve Link lifecycle/security invariants, all eight hardening_running_* regressions, the 20 documented function contracts and the additional type contract.
Keep upstream's error-report-and-continue initialization for ordinary fields/buttons/console, while a refused or throwing Link initializer still stops the action without committing edits, requests or Undo. Preserve initialization budgets, fresh contexts, NoCodeFromStrings, document identity/generation, permissions and consent.
Add four compatibility regressions: synchronous/interactive Link initializer errors; refused initializer preflight; no engine effects on failed initialization; and combined upstream menu/panel/OpenDoc request serialization with consent. Existing read-only assertions remain in the adapted SaveAs test.
The runtime, engine regression, automation regression and technical contract provide review entry points. No unmerged external PR was separately applied; no persistent realm, automatic JavaScript OpenAction execution or additional direct I/O capability was introduced.
Final local validation of 62f2167b on October 24, 2026: the committed sources match the frozen 1,566-file manifest. Cargo ran sequentially with two jobs, a dedicated target and short TEMP. Publication itself adds no source change or new test campaign.

The following functional scenarios were validated at synchronization head 2d524f78, not rerun for 62f2167b. Synthetic documents only. A 22-step headless run under --root checked cancellation, acceptance, forged selections, field values 17/99/17, rendering, navigation, diagnostics, Undo and request-only external operations. Exception paths left the field unchanged and returned no requests.
The final isolated Windows native scenario passed and exited normally with code 0, using the opt-in authenticated control channel and synthetic PDFs. It exercised the live menu, first-arrow handling, Escape, outside Find, Apply/navigation to page 2, price 99, one Undo to 17, console output, and a second action with no menu. Captures were inspected. Deterministic Running timing is proved by the Rust regressions, not a native clicking race.
Earlier manual observation of the original professional PDF predates the latest synchronization; the final commit was not manually validated with that PDF, which is not included in the contribution.
Earlier validation-campaign failures are retained rather than counted as green: loopback initially required user restoration; the long temporary AF_UNIX path exceeded Windows' 108-character limit, and a short TEMP resolved the three single-instance failures. A later sandbox run denied hard links/junctions, migration and sockets and was interrupted. The complete final workspace pass succeeded outside that sandbox with a short TEMP, without weakening tests. Initial egui test-fixture mistakes and three test-only unreachable! diagnostics were corrected without removing assertions or suppressing lints. Earlier native attempts included missing layout coordinates, an unexplained closure without a logged panic, and an off-viewport click at Fit Width; the final scripted run stabilized layout, closed the modal console and set zoom explicitly.
During this synchronization, a workspace attempt also stalled after loopback access expired. After user restoration, the entire workspace suite was restarted on unchanged sources and passed, including the CLI control test; no test was disabled.
The 18 ignored tests have different prerequisites; 11 belong to the previous five-crate scope and seven are outside it. No tests were newly disabled. WASM success is a compile check, not native macOS/Linux acceptance. Eleven inherited WASM warnings remain (four render, seven UI), with the same messages/files as the previous validation; native strict Clippy passes. Informational MSVC linker messages remain in the logs. No additional prolonged fuzzing, native macOS/Linux run or new cargo-deny execution is claimed; cargo-deny was unavailable.
Never-crash, provenance and reach
Reviewed the changed paths for panic shortcuts, hostile lengths/indices, checked arithmetic, bounded object/menu traversal, error propagation and stale-result handling; no new unsafe.
Real failing synthetic regressions precede the relevant fixes. Test-only failure diagnostics are distinct from production paths.
No Adobe-derived assets/fonts or copied GPL/AGPL implementation code; behavior comes from public documentation and independent observation. No contribution-specific asset, font or attribution entry is introduced; upstream attribution changes are retained.
--root, editing permissions, opt-in MCP and opt-in loopback/token UI control remain enforced; no new direct outbound access.
The parity entry remains partial, with tests and missing capabilities recorded. Roadmaps and API comments describe the current lifecycle.
The review is evidence about these paths, not proof that all malformed PDFs or all JavaScript resource failures are impossible.
Anything a reviewer should look at first
The important choices are fresh-context execution, worker/UI rendezvous, lifecycle cancellation versus document authority, and deferred external consent. Document globals do not persist between independent actions. Catalog/document/page lifecycle actions, /Next chains, other annotation triggers and the wider Acrobat object model remain unsupported. Native interactive Link menus are desktop-only; the web host reports them unavailable. A successful WASM build does not change that boundary.
Related PRs: source analysis, not tested combinations
No code from these open/unmerged PRs was separately integrated or modified here. The table records historical analyzed revisions, not newly tested combinations with this synchronization. In particular, #3062 has since advanced to f70b1807; the 22fbc318 analysis below does not establish compatibility with that newer revision.
Decide realm ownership, global-mutation cancellation and event ordering. Discarding a result cannot roll back persistent globals. Its automatic Open policy cannot be mechanically combined with the isolated worker model.
This revision defers non-XFA AcroForm evaluation on open. Link-time Doc/Open initialization here is not automatic catalog execution. Resolve its policy conflict with #344 explicitly.
Preserve immutable Arc/COW snapshots and generation checks. Similar mechanisms in the base do not mean this still-open PR has been merged.

GitHub reports review head 62f2167bf06007562b373fd0cd8f6ad7e171cd6a and base d445410807e7eefbe5b96f9662ab963ae8dd2a3a. The PR is open and Ready for review, mergeable=true / unstable: there is no merge conflict, while remote check requirements remain outstanding.
The CI run and SonarCloud run for this HEAD both conclude action_required. They are neither successes nor test failures. CodeRabbit's commit status is success with Review paused, which does not mean this correction has been reviewed. No workflow approval, bypass, rerun or new manual CodeRabbit request was performed. Maintainer action and human review remain necessary before merge.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
JavaScript actions attached to PDF links can run in the desktop app, including document scripts and interactive, nested popup menus.
Choose menu items with the keyboard or pointer, or cancel menus. Running actions continue through incidental focus or view changes; menus waiting for input may be canceled by interruptions.
Automation can run JavaScript link actions and report menus, diagnostics, and viewer requests without performing external access.
Link actions can request that a local document be opened, subject to permission and platform limits. Web builds report when interactive menus or local-file opening are unavailable.
Documentation
Added guidance on JavaScript link actions, menus, compatibility, and limitations.
The PR has been rebased onto upstream main (dc41044b), integrating 208 upstream commits. All seven merge conflicts were resolved while preserving upstream improvements.
Additional improvements:
Added a shared 4 MiB per-document budget for extracted JavaScript link sources, preventing memory amplification from repeated annotations.
Remaining limitations: WASM has not been tested, and Windows error 10013 still prevents automated native control-channel validation. Manual confirmation of the final tooltip fix on the updated native build remains pending.
No KiCad-specific behavior or security bypasses were introduced.
The contribution is ready for maintainer review. Feedback is welcome!
Cross-linking #3062 and #2081: each is reasonable on its own, but together they widen what an untrusted PDF can do, so they should be reviewed as a pair. Whichever lands second has to decide how the other's APIs behave.
What changes when both land
Today, AcroForm JavaScript only runs after the user interacts with a field. engine: do not run AcroForm open scripts; show a notice (#2889) #3062 runs document-level scripts (/Names /JavaScript), the catalog /OpenAction chain and the first page's /AA /O on every open where JavaScript is on. That includes headless doc_open / doc_batch through pdfcraft-cli run and MCP.
Requests from scripts that run at open are passed to the UI on open: Session::open → document.js_output → handle_js (crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs ~1370). So any request type that a script can make now becomes a zero-click action.
feat: support Acrobat JavaScript link actions and contextual menus #2081 adds app.openDoc, which becomes Request::OpenDoc → pending_remote_link and is resolved with the GoToR resolver. With engine: do not run AcroForm open scripts; show a notice (#2889) #3062 in place, a document could call app.openDoc from its open scripts. A relative .pdf target opens without a prompt (same as GoToR), and that document's own open scripts run in turn. That is a chain of documents opening with no click. app.launchURL, print() and saveAs also become prompts the user gets on open without clicking anything.
Things to settle before merging
User gesture. Should requests from open-time scripts (OpenDoc, Url, print, Save As) be dropped, or at least always ask, rather than handled as if the user had clicked? Acrobat's behaviour here isn't a reason to run them without a gesture.
Signed documents.js::on_open rebases an open-time revision whenever the scripts change a field. The page-tree repair right after it in prepare_open_unguarded deliberately skips signed documents ("writing the repair could rewrite the file under its signatures"). The open-script path doesn't. Should a signed or certified document get open-time field changes, and what does the signature panel say about them?
app.openDoc paths (feat: support Acrobat JavaScript link actions and contextual menus #2081). It uses resolve_remote_document_path, which is good. The Windows /c/... → c:... rewrite turns a path into an absolute one, so it should still hit the absolute-path consent prompt. A test for that would help, plus one for UNC (//host/share) input after the rewrite.
Neither PR introduces a direct file, process or network capability, and both reuse the existing consent paths, which is good. The concern is the combination: open-time execution plus a growing request API means each new Request variant needs an explicit "allowed without a gesture?" decision. A small allowlist in handle_js, keyed on the event that produced the request, would make that decision visible in one place.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
This change adds JavaScript link inspection and execution, interactive desktop menus, and a headless automation tool. It adds bounded script handling, consent-gated document-opening requests, lifecycle checks, tests, and documentation.

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to 2ffd3
The new desktop menu tests use Windows-style C:/... paths and will probably fail on Linux and macOS CI. They would block the build until the paths are made absolute on every host. The feature's runtime behavior is not affected, so this should be fixed before merge.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 2ffd3
Link actions now run code supplied by a PDF. Document changes and external requests have meaningful safeguards, but cancelling a menu does not stop its script worker, leaving a resource-containment concern.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: Cancelling or replacing a PDF-authored link action discards its results but does not stop its JavaScript worker. The newly exposed interactive and automation paths have cooperative execution limits, not hard time or heap limits; desktop admission bounds retained receivers rather than all worker execution. A costly script can therefore continue consuming process resources after its action is abandoned.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A person who can supply a PDF with a supported JavaScript link can cause code to run when that link is activated in the desktop viewer or invoked through automation. The resource impact is local to the executing viewer or automation process; the evidence does not show a service-wide deployment or direct filesystem access by the worker.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A costly PDF-authored script can retain a worker after the user cancels or replaces its link action. Cooperative loop and recursion limits and three desktop receiver slots reduce exposure but do not provide a hard time, heap, or worker-lifetime boundary. No privilege escalation or consent bypass was established.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Desktop external effects cross a host-controlled boundary: URL requests pass through the existing scheme restriction and permission prompt, while OpenDoc requests use source-relative path resolution and the pending-document consent flow. Automation exposes requests as data. The pending-document acceptance check uses source identity but not generation; that check is unchanged from the supplied base.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Menu replies are checked against enabled leaves, and stale or failed completions cannot commit link edits or requests. These effect-containment checks do not cancel an already running worker.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Give interactive workers an enforceable cancellation or process-level resource boundary, including an overall execution deadline and admission accounting that remains effective after receivers are dropped.

Merge upstream d445410 into the published PR storytold#2081 history without rewriting it.
Preserve fail-closed Link initialization alongside upstream form diagnostics,
menu lifecycle, consent, document identity, Undo and opening destinations.
Keep the hardening regressions and documentation contracts; add four tests
for the runtime, engine and automation interactions introduced by the merge.
Validated with 5009 workspace tests, scoped strict Clippy, formatting,
layers/assets/parity, wasm checks, documentation and native/headless scenarios.
Note: CodeRabbit is an incremental review system and does not re-review already reviewed commits. This command is applicable only when automatic reviews are paused.
GitHub had marked this PR conflicting after main advanced. 2d524f78 now integrates upstream main d4454108: 462 upstream commits, with 15 conflict blocks resolved across 8 files and the overlapping auto-merges reviewed. Publication was a normal fast-forward from d1d7c0a2, with no force push or history rewrite. GitHub now reports no merge conflict (mergeable=true; overall state unstable while checks require action).
The key resolution keeps upstream's report-and-continue initialization for ordinary fields/buttons/console, while refused or throwing Link initialization remains fail-closed with no committed edits, requests or Undo. Upstream XFA isolation, util.scand, app.execMenuItem/panels, diagnostics and #4376 opening destinations are retained. Fresh contexts, NoCodeFromStrings, Running/AwaitingChoice/Accepted, identity/generation checks, permissions and explicit OpenDoc consent remain in place. All eight hardening_running_* tests and the 20 function contracts plus type contract are preserved.
Four compatibility regressions cover Link initializer errors (synchronous and interactive), refused initializer preflight, engine rollback/no effects, and the combined upstream menu/panel/OpenDoc request contract. Review entry points: runtime tests, engine tests, automation tests and technical contract.
Local validation of the committed sources: 5,009 workspace tests passed, 0 failed, 18 ignored (includes upstream tests); the five relevant crates passed 2,862/0/11 as a subset. Formatting, strict native Clippy, layers/assets/parity, applicable WASM checks, desktop/CLI builds, 22 headless steps and the automated native Windows scenario pass. Normal Rustdoc succeeds with 25 warnings versus 24 previously; the additional warning is inherited from main, with none introduced by our documented contracts. Strict Rustdoc is not claimed green.
Limits remain: fresh contexts rather than persistent realms, cooperative VM budgets rather than hard heap/wall-time isolation, desktop-only interactive Link menus, and no automatic JavaScript OpenAction execution. No unmerged external PR was separately applied. This publication adds no new source change.
Remote validation is separate: the CI and SonarCloud runs for this SHA are action_required, not passed or failed tests. A single CodeRabbit review was requested because automatic reviews were paused; no resume or Autofix. Its new-SHA findings/coverage and maintainer workflow action remain to be assessed. Human review and successful applicable remote checks are still needed before merge.

I'd like to understand the significant variations in the Docstring Coverage pre-merge check for PR #2081.
Reported coverage history
67375506 — 62.68%
cd8d2c52 — 33.99%
d1d7c0a2 — 40.91%
2d524f78 — 32.47% (Inconclusive)
Independent analysis
We performed an independent Rust AST analysis using syn and found:
No removed function documentation explaining the coverage drops.
17 new function docstrings and 3 enriched existing docstrings.
65.00% direct documentation coverage for touched production functions (39/60).
86.96% direct documentation coverage for touched public APIs (20/23).
All critical P0 and P1 documentation gaps identified by our audit have been addressed.
These independent metrics use a fixed scope and are not claimed to be equivalent to CodeRabbit's metric.
Questions about the coverage calculation
Could you please clarify:
Numerator and denominator: What exact counts produce each reported percentage?
Eligibility rules: Are tests, private functions, helpers, nested functions, trait implementations and macro-generated functions included?
Documentation recognition: Which Rust documentation forms are recognized (///, //!, /** */, #[doc], inherited trait documentation)?
Missing documentation: Can you provide a per-file or per-function breakdown of the functions classified as undocumented?
Skipped functions: Which functions or files were skipped, particularly the one classified as "too large"?
Score variations: Why did coverage drop from 62.68% to 33.99%, and later from 40.91% to 32.47%, without corresponding documentation removals?
Reproducibility: Is the calculation deterministic across reviews, or can changes in analysis scope or tooling affect the results?
Expected outcome
We're not requesting another code review, automatic fixes, or generated documentation.
We want to understand the measurement methodology so that we can address genuine documentation gaps rather than add comments merely to satisfy an arbitrary threshold.
If the internal calculation details are unavailable to you, please state that explicitly and direct us to the relevant documentation or support channel.
@LMatt08 I checked the published PR report, the current configuration, and the public documentation. The latest report provides a denominator, but it does not provide enough detail to explain the historical changes or confirm all Rust eligibility rules.
Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 154 functions across 14 files. (5 skipped: 4 unsupported, 1 too large.)

154 analyzed functions; 50/154 rounds to 32.47%
The latest numerator of 50 is reconstructed from the percentage and denominator. The report does not explicitly publish that count or identify the 50 functions.
The current configuration sets mode: warning and threshold: 80. This confirms the current settings, not the settings used for every historical run.
2. Eligibility rules
The report confirms a diff-touched function scope. Public guidance also describes coverage for new or modified code.
However, the retrieved sources do not define whether the Rust check includes or excludes:
Test functions and test helpers.
Private functions and production helpers.
Nested functions.
Trait implementation methods.
Macro-generated functions.
I cannot give a verified yes-or-no answer for those categories. The configuration schema exposes only mode and threshold for this check. It does not expose category selectors or a docstring-check-specific path filter.
3. Rust documentation recognition
Rust’s language rules and CodeRabbit’s recognition rules are separate.
Inner documentation for the enclosing item, equivalent to #![doc = "…"]
#[doc = "…"]
Documentation text attached through an attribute
Module-level //! documentation does not automatically document each function in that module. Also, not every #[doc(...)] attribute supplies documentation text.
I found no verified CodeRabbit Rust recognition matrix for these forms, inherited trait documentation, or documentation produced by macros. Rustdoc support alone does not establish that this check recognizes each form.
What explains the variation?
The cause remains unverified. A percentage can fall when the eligible function set grows, even if no documentation is removed. But the available reports do not establish that this caused these changes.
Your reported 39/60 and 20/23 metrics use different denominators from the latest check’s 154 functions. They therefore cannot directly confirm or refute its percentage.
The latest result is also Inconclusive, with skipped inputs. It should not be treated as a complete documentation audit.
To reconcile the results, CodeRabbit support would need the per-run function inventory, documentation classifications, skipped paths, comparison base, and analyzer version for all four SHAs. Please provide those SHAs and the report link in a support request. I would not recommend adding documentation solely to chase these changing percentages before that scope is established.
Your comment ends during question 3. Please resend the remainder if it contains additional questions.

@LMatt08 Thanks for the detailed questions. I do not have access to the internal calculation records or implementation needed to answer all seven questions exactly. I verified the published report, but it does not contain the function inventory.
My previous reply also incorrectly said your comment ended at question 3. All seven questions were present. Sorry for that error.

154 analyzed functions; exact numerator not published
If 154 is the denominator of a simple documented-function ratio, 50/154 rounds to 32.47%. That is an arithmetic reconstruction, not a verified internal count. My previous reply should have made that condition explicit.
2. Eligibility rules
The report states that coverage applies to “functions touched by this diff.”
The evidence available to me does not specify whether the Rust check includes tests, private functions, helpers, nested functions, trait implementation methods, or macro-generated functions. I cannot give verified inclusion rules for those categories.
3. Documentation recognition
I cannot verify which Rust documentation forms the check recognizes.
Rust recognizes outer documentation such as ///, /** … */, and #[doc = "…"]. Inner documentation such as //! documents its enclosing item. These language rules do not establish CodeRabbit’s recognition rules.
Recognition of inherited trait documentation and macro-produced documentation also remains unverified.
4. Undocumented-function breakdown
The published report provides no per-file or per-function classification. I cannot identify the functions classified as undocumented from that report.
A separate repository AST analysis would produce a new inventory. It would not recover CodeRabbit’s internal classifications or explain differences without the original inventory.
5. Skipped functions
The report identifies only these totals:
4 unsupported
1 too large
It does not identify their paths, symbols, or source ranges. It also does not state the size limit or the meaning of “unsupported.” I cannot reliably name the skipped inputs.
6. Reasons for the score changes
The cause of each change remains unverified.
Coverage can decrease without documentation removal if the denominator grows or the analyzed function set changes. Changes to the comparison base, eligibility rules, or documentation classification could also affect the result. These are possible explanations, not established causes for this PR.
Your fixed-scope results—39/60 production functions and 20/23 public APIs—measure different populations. They do not explain which additional functions account for CodeRabbit’s 154 analyzed functions.
The Inconclusive result and skipped inputs also limit what the latest report establishes. The report does not explain precisely why it selected that status.
7. Reproducibility
I cannot confirm a determinism guarantee for this check. The retrieved public material does not establish whether identical inputs always produce identical classifications.
A reproducible comparison would need the same head SHA, comparison base, effective configuration, analyzer version, function inventory, and classification rules. Without those records, I cannot distinguish scope changes from tooling changes or classification variability.
Documentation and support
I did not locate a public specification that answers the requested Rust-specific methodology questions. The general pre-merge checks overview does not provide the per-run evidence needed to reconcile these results.
Include this PR, the report link, and all four SHAs. Ask support for:
Exact numerator and denominator for each run.
Function inventory with documentation classifications and exclusion reasons.
Paths and symbols for all skipped inputs.
Comparison base, effective configuration, and analyzer version.
Rust eligibility and documentation-recognition rules.
Any determinism guarantees or known limitations.
I do not recommend adding documentation solely to satisfy these unexplained percentage changes. First establish which functions the check counted and why. I have not triggered a review, fixes, or documentation generation.
Merge 418ac6a into the validated JavaScript-link contribution without
rewriting either history. Preserve upstream annotation parent identity,
page-pointer routing, form/XFA safeguards and the existing script budgets,
consent, menu lifecycle and Undo contracts.
Retain the click position accepted by PagePointer for menu activation,
instead of reading egui's raw pointer again. The upstream contract test
fails before this adaptation and passes after it.
Validation: 2,941 targeted tests and 5,098 workspace tests pass, with zero
failures (17 and 24 ignored respectively). Strict Clippy on all targets of
the eleven affected crates, formatting, xtask layers/assets/parity/wasm,
Web WASM, native application/CLI builds and CLI/MCP/native scenarios pass.
Six added ignored pointer-router tests and eleven WASM warnings are
inherited from upstream/the validated baseline and remain documented.
Merge upstream release 5a78b22 while preserving the validated contribution
and its published history. Update only the workspace/internal dependency
versions in Cargo.toml and Cargo.lock; external dependencies and functional
files are unchanged. The 22-file contribution diff remains byte-identical.
Validation: 5,098 workspace tests and 2,941 targeted tests pass, zero
failures (24 and 17 ignored respectively). Formatting, strict Clippy,
xtask layers/assets/parity/wasm, Web WASM, native application/CLI builds
and CLI/MCP/native scenarios pass on 0.14.0.
The latest changes have now been pushed, including the JavaScript interaction and security fixes, updated documentation, and synchronization through PdfCraft 0.14.0.
The branch is currently behind the rapidly evolving main, and some merge conflicts may remain. I've intentionally stopped repeated upstream synchronizations until the overall approach has been reviewed.
Before investing further effort, I would particularly appreciate maintainer feedback on the proposed JavaScript execution model, permission and consent boundaries, and UI/headless integration.
Is this architectural direction suitable for eventual integration, or would you prefer a different approach or a smaller set of changes?
I'm happy to address concrete review findings and integration requirements once we have alignment on the direction. Thank you.

Make the C:/... test paths absolute on every host.
resolve_javascript_document_path strips the drive-letter prefix only when compiled for Windows. On Linux and macOS, C:/... stays relative. The menu test fixture opens its document with no source path, so the resolver has no base to join the relative path to. It returns an error, request_script_document reports that error, and pending_remote_link is never set. The assertions at lines 739 and 764 then fail on those hosts. The engine's own drive-path test is gated to Windows.

What this changes
PDFs can use link JavaScript to choose a destination through a contextual menu. This PR extends PdfCraft's existing Rust/Boa implementation to execute those actions and display native, non-modal egui menus. It is generic PDF behavior, with no document-generator-specific handling or new runtime dependency.
Review head:
62f2167b, published by a normal fast-forward from2d524f78on October 24, 2026. Its parent is the previously validated synchronization merge, which integrates upstream maind4454108and preserves the published history. GitHub reports no merge conflict; remote checks still require maintainer action as noted below.Supported behavior

This is initialization on an explicit link activation, not automatic execution of catalog OpenAction.app.popUpMenuEx()subset: nested menus, separators, enabled/disabled and marked items,cName/cReturn(including empty values), validated leaf selections andnullcancellation.pageNumnavigation through the viewer and existing history.app.launchURL()returns a URL request handled through the existing allowlist/consent flow. Restrictedapp.openDoc(cPath)orapp.openDoc({cPath: ...})returns a deferred local-PDF request; it immediately returnsnull, not a live Acrobat Doc.link_run_javascript {doc, page, index, menu_choices?}through the shared CLI/MCP tool table, using one-basedlink_listnumbering. It reports menus, alerts, console, requests and errors. Omitted choices returnnullto that popup; the script can resume and commit edits.
The desktop host distinguishes
Running,AwaitingChoiceandAccepted:nullto waiting/later menus and discards later effects. It does not terminate the VM.Boa receives no filesystem, process or direct network API here. Script OpenDoc requests require consent including relative paths, then the existing local-PDF validation, size/password and permission checks. Windows
/C/pathand/C:/pathnormalize toC:/path; URL/UNC/network paths and nonemptycFSor non-nulloDocoptions are refused. Automation keeps--root; it returns requests as data rather than opening them.Inspection caps each raw string or decoded-stream operand at 256 KiB.
A large shared-runtime result can still exist outside the Host budget, although Link UI discards
Outcome.resultand the tool does not serialize it. The UI retains the existing single pending external prompt. These are documented limits retained in this scope, not claims of complete resource isolation.Audit and CodeRabbit follow-up
The full 21-file contribution and the final correction received separate review passes. The historical Qwen/differential findings and Daybreak findings were reclassified against the actual source and external-PR revisions; they are not treated as automatically valid against this HEAD.

A bounded negative cache prevents repeated decompression of shared refused streams without charging failures to the 4 MiB budget. Regression and cache-bound tests cover aliases, later valid sources and eviction.cd8d2c52. Both phase guards now restrict menu dismissal toAwaitingChoice, while document invalidation remains unconditional. Eight new tests cover the transitions below.Earlier fixes retained here include accepted-result preservation, legacy event/target isolation, logic/UI separation, first-menu shortcut ownership, view-stamp invalidation, popup replacement, retained-source amplification and tooltip interception. Historical regression evidence is not presented as newly rerun mutations.
Examples of disproved claims at the earlier audited revisions include Windows path normalization producing a drive-relative path and the
Mouse Upevent spelling. The earlier non-XFA SaveAs claim relied on an API that was absent then; integrated upstream now providesapp.execMenuItem("SaveAs"). Its regression was adapted to assert deferred requests and the existing read-only/permission boundary. Resource limits and persistent-realm concerns remain architectural boundaries. No cause for the changing bot scores or claim of meeting its threshold is inferred.Running regression: reproduction and coverage
Before the first menu, an action could set a field or produce an error and then lose its completion after focus/view/outside interaction. Polling treated every phase except
Acceptedas dismissible; drawing applied menu cancellation toRunningtoo, potentially retiring the receiver before readingComplete. Consequences were lost expected edits/results or invisible errors, not demonstrated corruption of an already saved file.Three initial regressions actually failed before the production fix:
Running lost in poll: focus,Running lost in UI: outside, and a missingrunning failurediagnostic. They then passed. The tests retain a real engine completion at the UI-channel boundary to control event order; they do not pretend a VM is still computing during that retained completion.Eight new Running regressions and their source locations

Documentation-only commit
d1d7c0a2reviewed and documented or clarified 20 production functions: 6 critical P0 function contracts and 14 P1 function contracts, plus 1 additional type-level security contract. That commit added 17 new function docstrings and enriched three existing ones without functional/API changes or dependencies. Its AST verification confirmed identical non-documentation Rust tokens across 15 Rust files and all 903 test/helper definitions. The synchronization preserves the 20 function contracts and the additional type contract; 19 function docs are identical andrun_herenow documents the distinct initializer-error policies and original initializer indices.Independent documentation coverage
These historical measurements of documentation commit
d1d7c0a2come from our independent Rust AST analyzer, not CodeRabbit. The original touched-function scope and denominators were held fixed. They are not a new CodeRabbit score or a newly expanded measurement of all functions changed by upstream. The documentation-only sources at
d1d7c0a2passed 4,727 tests, 0 failed, 18 ignored. The current synchronized-source results are reported below; they include upstream tests and must not be interpreted as tests specific to this contribution.Rustdoc reserve: normal documentation generation on the synchronized sources succeeds with 25 warnings, versus 24 previously. The additional public-to-private link warning (
selected_text→DocView::pages_without_text) comes from code and docs identical to main; none was introduced by the documented contribution contracts. The earlierRUSTDOCFLAGS=-D warningscheck failed on the 24 pre-existing diagnostics. Strict Rustdoc is not reported as passing, and no lint or warning is suppressed.Upstream synchronization — October 24, 2026
2d524f78integrates 462 upstream commits, including #4376, from maind445410807e7eefbe5b96f9662ab963ae8dd2a3a. 15 merge-conflict blocks across 8 files were resolved and the nine overlapping auto-merged files were examined. The published history is retained: no force push or history rewrite.hardening_running_*regressions, the 20 documented function contracts and the additional type contract.util.scand,app.execMenuItem/panels anddoc_errorspropagation. Deferred OpenDoc requests retain explicit consent. The runtime, engine regression, automation regression and technical contract provide review entry points. No unmerged external PR was separately applied; no persistent realm, automatic JavaScript OpenAction execution or additional direct I/O capability was introduced.
Final targeted corrections — October 24, 2026
62f2167baddresses only the two observations above; it adds no new upstream integration. Three passing regressions cover all four implicit field events and frontend output/Undo, explicit Button requests and effects/Undo, and headless missing/empty/null choices, continuation, one-step Undo and consent-marked Link requests. The eight Running regressions and four synchronization regressions remain unchanged and pass. How you verified it

Functional checks and verification limits
The following functional scenarios were validated at synchronization head
2d524f78, not rerun for62f2167b. Synthetic documents only. A 22-step headless run under--rootchecked cancellation, acceptance, forged selections, field values 17/99/17, rendering, navigation, diagnostics, Undo and request-only external operations.
Initial egui test-fixture mistakes and three test-only
unreachable!diagnostics were corrected without removing assertions or suppressing lints. Earlier native attempts included missing layout coordinates, an unexplained closure without a logged panic, and an off-viewport click at Fit Width; the final scripted run stabilized layout, closed the modal console and set zoom explicitly.During this synchronization, a workspace attempt also stalled after loopback access expired.
Never-crash, provenance and reach
unsafe.--root, editing permissions, opt-in MCP and opt-in loopback/token UI control remain enforced; no new direct outbound access.
Catalog/document/page lifecycle actions,
/Nextchains, other annotation triggers and the wider Acrobat object model remain unsupported. Native interactive Link menus are desktop-only; the web host reports them unavailable. A successful WASM build does not change that boundary.Related PRs: source analysis, not tested combinations
