What this changes

Part of #3940 (item 2, custom /C calculations left blank; items 1 and 3 are separate, see below).

pdfcraft_js::run evaluated the document-level scripts in one ? chain before the field script (crates/js/src/lib.rs, run_here). If any document-level script threw at top level, the ? returned before the field script ran, so every Calculate, Format, Validate and Keystroke script in the form failed, and js_run failed before reaching the user's script. The form in #3940 does exactly that: its document script defines the helpers the /C actions call, then copies a button icon with buttonSetIcon(buttonGetIcon()), which PdfCraft doesn't have, so all 132 calculated fields stayed blank.

Each document-level script is now evaluated on its own. One that throws stops where it failed (what it defined before the error stays defined), the others and the field script still run, and the error is collected in a new Outcome::doc_errors (document script N: <error>) instead of failing the field script:

  • the engine reports those errors with the other script errors, once per run rather than once per field script (the document scripts run again before every field script, so a form with 132 calculations would otherwise repeat the same line 132 times);
  • js_run returns them as document_errors, so an MCP client sees which document script failed and why, as the reporter asked.

Reproduced first with a synthetic form (text field a, calculated c whose /C calls a document-level helper, a document script that defines the helper and then calls buttonSetIcon): on main 88dad98, form_fill a=21 leaves c empty and js_run fails with TypeError: not a callable function; the same form without the buttonSetIcon line gives c = 42.

Not in this PR:

  • app.popUpMenuEx (item 3): feat: support Acrobat JavaScript link actions and contextual menus #2081 implements it.
  • Field.buttonGetIcon / buttonSetIcon (item 1): still missing; with this PR their absence costs only the icon copy, not the whole form.
  • this.calculateNow() is still a no-op inside a script (crates/js/src/lib.rs, install), so a script that sets values, calls calculateNow() and reads a calculated field in the same run still reads the old value; the calculation runs once the script's changes are applied. That needs the sandbox to run other fields' Calculate scripts mid-script and is a larger change.

How you verified it

  • cargo fmt --check
  • clippy with -D warnings: pdfcraft-js, pdfcraft-engine, pdfcraft-automation (--all-targets)
  • tests: cargo test -p pdfcraft-js -p pdfcraft-engine -p pdfcraft-automation: js 50, engine 292 (+1 ignored, unchanged), automation 190 and the other suites, 0 failed
  • cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask assets, cargo xtask parity

Tests, by zoom:

  • unit (crates/js/src/tests.rs::a_failing_document_script_does_not_stop_the_field_script): a helper defined before the throw, a later script, and a syntax-error script; the field script returns 9, doc_errors names scripts 1 and 3, the failing script stopped where it failed.
  • engine integration (crates/engine/src/tests.rs::a_document_script_that_throws_still_lets_the_form_calculate): the existing scripted order form with buttonSetIcon(buttonGetIcon()) appended to its helpers; qty = 4 calculates total = 10 through the helper, the error is reported once, the console still runs.
  • automation (javascript_through_tools): document_errors is [] normally and names the failing script after js_set_document_script adds one that throws.

Seen failing: with the loop reverted to ctx.eval(...)?, the js unit test fails at the value assertion and the engine test gets total = [] instead of ["10"]. Mutants, each killed: errors not collected (js and engine tests), numbering off by one (js), engine ignoring doc_errors (engine), the once-only dedupe removed (engine), document_errors dropped from the js_run JSON (automation).

Never-crash

  • No new unwrap/expect/panic! outside tests; the index in the message uses saturating_add.
  • No indexing with input-derived positions; nothing new is sized by input (one string per failing document script, and document scripts are already bounded by refuse).
  • No unsafe.

Provenance

  • No assets, fonts or copied code.
  • Behaviour from JavaScript's own semantics (an exception stops the script that threw, not separate scripts) and the JavaScript for Acrobat API Reference model of document-level scripts as separate named scripts. I have not observed Acrobat with this form.

Security

  • No new paths, network access or channels; the sandbox limits are unchanged and still apply to each document script.

Parity and reach

  • form.document-javascripts notes and evidence updated, including what is still unlike Acrobat: the document scripts run again before every field script instead of once at open, so top-level side effects repeat.
  • Reachable headlessly: js_run returns document_errors; its tool description says so.

Anything a reviewer should look at first

  • Outcome gains a public field (doc_errors). All struct literals in the workspace use ..Default::default(), so nothing else changes.
  • Errors from document scripts now go to the engine's error list rather than failing the field script. A script that fails itself is handled as before (the value is left alone and the error reported).

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Document-level JavaScript errors, including errors from scripts skipped for exceeding safety limits, are now included in run results.
    • A failing document script no longer prevents later document scripts or field calculations from running. Successful results remain available, and each document-script error is reported only once.
    • Document scripts stop executing at the point of an error; statements after the error are not run.

📝 Walkthrough

Document-script errors are reported separately from field-script errors. Later document scripts and the field script continue after a document-script failure. Engine output and js_run expose the document-script errors.

Changes: Document JavaScript error isolation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Continue after document-script errors
crates/js/src/lib.rs, crates/js/src/tests.rs, parity/acrobat-features.toml
The runner records runtime failures and scripts refused by safety checks, then continues with later document scripts and the field script. Tests cover script positions, runtime errors, safety limits, and field-script limit failures. The parity notes describe error reporting and document-script execution timing.
Collect document errors in engine output
crates/engine/src/js.rs, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
JsOutput.absorb and JsOutput.append deduplicate document-script errors while retaining repeated field-script errors. Engine tests cover calculations and helper calls after document-script failures.
Expose document errors through automation
crates/automation/src/a11y.rs, crates/automation/src/tools.rs, crates/automation/tests/it/automation.rs
js_run returns document_errors, and its description explains that remaining document scripts continue after a failure. The integration test checks the result and reported error.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4563c

Later scripts can run after a rejected document script, but a field-script failure can be missing from merged error reporting when its message matches a document-script error. Correct that narrow reporting gap before merge or accept it explicitly.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4563c

Continuing after a document-script failure does not add new script privileges or bypass existing link permissions. However, direct button execution loses the newly separated document-error diagnostics while subsequent actions can continue. Recovery after runtime-limit failures also remains incompletely established.

Retained concerns

  • Low · reliability · observed: Direct UI button execution does not propagate the new document-error channel. Previously, document exceptions and safety refusals populated Outcome.error and reached the console through this adapter. They now populate Outcome.doc_errors, which the adapter drops while still forwarding subsequent requests. This weakens visibility of failed or refused initialization during continued execution, although request authorization controls remain unchanged.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A document author can now reach later script effects despite an earlier document-script failure or refusal. The demonstrated scope remains the current document's form state and existing viewer requests; no new host capability or cross-document authority was identified in the inspected paths.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — Direct button execution forwards requests but drops document-script errors. This is an introduced diagnostic-contract gap, not evidence of an authorization bypass or verified data-exfiltration path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Newly eligible URL requests still pass document-URL validation and require user permission. The UI reports submissions without sending form data and routes print requests to the existing print UI. Automation serializes requests rather than executing these viewer actions. These consumers were unchanged in the full PR comparison.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Added tests specify continuation after ordinary document exceptions and preflight refusals. Existing tests specify isolated loop and recursion failures, but the inspected evidence does not establish recovery of the shared context after a document script exhausts a runtime limit or a rollback policy for writes made before its exception.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the continuation contract explicitly for retained field writes, queued requests, and runtime-limit exhaustion, and verify that policy across repeated field execution and recovery. This would strengthen failure-containment guarantees without treating an ordinary document exception as an authorization boundary.

Handle document-script preflight failures separately.

If one document script exceeds MAX_SCRIPT_BYTES or a nesting limit, run returns from this preflight check before run_here starts. Later document scripts and the field script do not run. The failure appears in Outcome.error, not Outcome.doc_errors. Keep the field-script preflight, but record each rejected document script in doc_errors and continue with the remaining scripts.

@coderabbitai Thanks, the outside-diff note on crates/js/src/lib.rs:1105 was right: a document script over the size or nesting limit still made run return before anything ran. Fixed in 2289ef2:

  • run now preflights only the field script outright (its failure is unchanged: Outcome.error, nothing runs).
  • A document script that refuse rejects is skipped, never evaluated (the limits exist to keep it away from the engine), and recorded in doc_errors as document script N: <reason>; the other document scripts and the field script still run.
  • Errors are reported in script order whether the script was refused beforehand or threw while running.

Tests: new a_document_script_too_big_to_run_is_skipped_and_reported (a throwing, a too-long and a too-deep script around a helper: the field script returns the helper's value, doc_errors names scripts 1, 2 and 4). The existing deeply_nested_scripts_fail_instead_of_crashing asserted the old early return for a hostile document script; it now asserts that the field script runs and the hostile script is reported, not run. Mutants: refused scripts not reported, and the ordering removed, both fail the new test. Gate on js, engine and automation: fmt, clippy -D warnings, 608 tests, 0 failed.

@mtlcl410 Thanks. The inspected code addresses the reported concern.

  • run excludes rejected document scripts from evaluation.
  • run_here continues after document-script exceptions and sorts doc_errors by original script position.
  • Field-script preflight failures still return through Outcome.error before any script runs.

The regression tests cover mixed rejection and execution errors, error ordering, and field-script continuation. I did not rerun the reported validation checks.

Thanks for this, a clean fix with good tests at three zooms.

I read the diff against main and found nothing blocking: no new panic path (the index uses saturating_add, no indexing), the refuse() limits still apply to every document script, there is no new path or network surface, and the parity notes say honestly what is still unlike Acrobat.

Optional nits:

  1. crates/engine/src/js.rs, JsOutput::append: it still concatenates errors without the dedupe that absorb now does, so the same document script error could repeat if two outputs are merged. Probably harmless; worth a glance if you see duplicates in practice.
  2. crates/js/src/lib.rs, run_shared: the failed early-return path (thread spawn or join failure) leaves doc_errors empty. That is fine, just noting it.

Review on storytold#3985 (benandez): JsOutput::absorb reported a failing document script once, but append
added every error again, so merging two outputs repeated it. pdfcraft_js now says whether an

@benandez thanks. On your first nit (JsOutput::append): fixed in 4563cad. append now applies absorb's rule, so a document script error that's already listed isn't added again, while each field script error is still kept. To tell the two apart, pdfcraft_js::is_doc_error sits next to doc_error, which writes the document script N: … text, so the format is defined in one place.

merged_output_reports_a_document_script_error_once (engine) checks that:

  • merging two runs keeps one copy of the document script error and both copies of a field error;
  • look-alikes such as document script x: … and document script : … are treated as field errors.

Four mutants each fail it:

  • the old append;
  • de-duplicating every error;
  • dropping the digit check;
  • accepting an empty number.

On your second nit, I agree: a thread spawn or join failure reports only that failure, which is enough.

Thanks, @enriquemelzer-bit, for making one throwing document script stop short of the others; the engine test for #3940 is good. One regression: js_ui.rs builds JsOutput with doc_errors: Vec::new() in both run_console and run_button_script and drops o.doc_errors, so the JavaScript console no longer shows an error when a document script fails (the new parity note says it does). Could you push o.doc_errors into the console log as Error: … and into the button script's output, with a UI test? Then it is ready to land.
