fix(links): support Named, Hide, ResetForm actions and /Next chaining (#4524) - #4556
Named actions: Links with /S /Named now support standard page navigation actions (NextPage, PrevPage, FirstPage, LastPage, matching push button support in canvas.rs). Unrecognized or non-navigation named actions (such as Save, Print) take no automated action without confirmation.
Hide actions: Links with /S /Hide now show or hide the target fields (/T) and their children according to /H (default true hides, false shows). Targets can be field names, arrays of names/references, or indirect references (resolved by qualified name).
ResetForm actions: Links with /S /ResetForm now reset the specified fields (/Fields) or all fields except the specified fields (/Flags bit 1 exclude flag). When /Fields is omitted or empty, all fields in the document are reset to their default values (/DV). When /Fields is present in include-mode but none of the targets resolve, no fields are reset.
/Next action chaining: An action dictionary can chain subsequent actions through /Next (either a single action dictionary or an array of actions, per ISO 32000-2 §12.6.2 Table 196). Inspector parses and collects chains into LinkTarget::Sequence(...) up to MAX_ACTION_CHAIN = 64 actions with cycle detection via HashSet<ObjectId>. Visited nodes are globally bounded by MAX_ACTION_VISITS = 1024 to prevent exponential DAG fanout.
Headless automation and UI tooltips:doc_info serialization exposes Named, Hide, ResetForm, and Sequence link targets. In the UI, hover labels display user-friendly translated tooltips for named, hide, and reset-form actions.

crates/render/src/inspect.rs: single_action and collect_actions for the new LinkTarget variants and bounded /Next collection with cycle detection and DAG visit bounding.
crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs: run_link_target dispatching Named, Hide, ResetForm, and Sequence targets, reusing shared hide_targets_edit and reset_form_edit helpers. In PdfCraft (edit.action-show-hide-field), Hide actions apply to form fields and widget references, while non-widget annotations are not form fields.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
PDF links now support standard named navigation actions, including page movement.
Links and buttons can show or hide form fields and reset all, selected, or excluded fields.
Chained link actions run in order, including navigation actions that follow other actions.
Link hover labels identify named navigation, visibility, reset, and chained actions.
Document information now reports named actions, field visibility changes, form resets, and action sequences.
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
Link inspection now parses named, Hide, ResetForm, and /Next actions. The UI executes these targets and shares field-edit helpers with button actions. Document info serializes the added target types.
Changes: Link action support
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Inspect and collect link actions crates/render/src/inspect.rs, crates/render/src/lib.rs
Link inspection extracts named, Hide, and ResetForm targets. It follows /Next actions with cycle detection and traversal limits. JavaScript detection checks nested sequences. Tests cover action parsing and chains.
Execute link actions crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/it/document_links.rs, parity/acrobat-features.toml
The UI labels and dispatches link targets, applies Hide and ResetForm edits, and executes named actions and sequences. Tests cover navigation, field visibility, resets, and chained actions. Parity records the supported action cases.
Serialize targets in document info crates/automation/src/lib.rs, crates/automation/tests/it/automation.rs
Document info serializes named, Hide, ResetForm, and sequence targets. An integration test checks the JSON representations.

Possibly related issues
The issue titled “Links with Named, Hide or ResetForm actions, or a /Next chain, only show "unsupported action"” describes unsupported link actions that this change adds.
Suggested reviewers:aiongg
Merge Risk: Low · up to 3b8a6
The change is mergeable with owner awareness of narrow link-action gaps: an incomplete ResetForm exclusion list may reset an unintended field, and a chain containing two URLs opens only the first approval request. Page navigation may also pause on large documents.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 3b8a6
Opening a crafted PDF can consume excessive resources because the new action-processing limit restarts for every link. Existing external-URL confirmation controls remain in place, and the identified security impact is resource exhaustion in the application processing the document.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · observed: The new action traversal is bounded per link, not per document. A crafted PDF can supply many distinct link annotations referencing the same branching /Next graph and repeatedly consume up to 1,024 action-node visits during inspection, without a link click. Dictionaries lacking /S consume visits without filling the 64-target limit. Existing reference deduplication and text-retention limits do not contain this aggregate work amplification.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The supported denial-of-service scope is the process inspecting an attacker-supplied PDF. Traversal occurs during document inspection before interactive approval, so URL confirmation does not protect this path. The reviewed evidence does not establish a privileged identity transition or cross-tenant execution environment.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
observed — The retained security finding concerns aggregate inspection work: distinct PDF links restart the visit counter and can repeatedly traverse a shared graph. The 64-action and 1,024-visit controls prevent runaway work within an individual link, but neither is shared across links. The base did not traverse /Next, establishing the PR-specific amplification.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Chained URI actions still enter request_document_url. Accepted addresses occupy a single pending approval slot, and the application calls its UI URL opener only after an affirmative response. Sequence recursion does not provide an approval-free URI path.
observed — Remote actions retain the existing application authority and conditional consent policy: absolute paths require approval, while resolved relative paths are scheduled directly. This policy and its implementation are unchanged between the supplied base and head, although chains newly permit multiple remote actions per click. Resolution rejects URL, network, device, and malformed paths; the read path checks for a regular .pdf file and enforces a 1 GiB per-file limit. Local cross-PDF opening is desktop-only.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Collected field edits use the existing transaction boundary. Permissions are checked recursively for batches; execution modifies a document copy, successful edits create an undo entry, and refresh failure restores the previous document. Undo and redo also restore their prior state if refresh fails. These controls contain partial field-edit failures, but do not make navigation, layer changes, or approved external effects part of the same undo transaction.
observed — A chained remote open schedules background work rather than synchronously rebinding the source view. Completion processing runs before canvas interaction, and queued edits are drained after it; completed opens append a new view. This counters the suspected same-frame transfer of deferred field edits to the newly opened document.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — Carry a shared document-wide action-work budget across all link inspections, alongside the existing per-link limits. Expose budget exhaustion as an explicit warning so consumers can distinguish a complete action listing from a deliberately truncated one.

collect_actions keeps every indirect /Next reference in one global seen set. If a /Next array contains the same referenced action twice, the first entry is collected and the second is skipped. The ordered action sequence therefore executes only once for that action.
Remove each reference after its recursive branch completes. This preserves cycle protection for active references and allows repeated noncyclic array entries.

The current fixture reaches /S /Named, so the target cap stops traversal before MAX_ACTION_VISITS matters. Use empty action dictionaries instead. The link collector then produces no targets, so assert zero links.
Suggested fixture update
- // 20 levels of fan-out: each level k has /Next [k+1 0 R k+1 0 R] without /S.- // Without visit bounding, this would be 2^20 = 1,048,576 recursive calls.- for k in 11..31 {+ // 40 levels of fan-out: each level k has /Next [k+1 0 R k+1 0 R] without /S.+ // Without visit bounding, this would be about 2^40 recursive calls.+ for k in 11..51 {
pdf.extend_from_slice(format!("{k} 0 obj << /Next [{} 0 R {} 0 R] >> endobj\n", k + 1, k + 1).as_bytes());
}
pdf.extend_from_slice(
- b"31 0 obj << /S /Named /N /NextPage >> endobj\n\+ b"51 0 obj << >> endobj\n\
trailer << /Root 1 0 R >>\n%%EOF",
);
let info = inspect(Arc::new(pdf), None).expect("opens quickly");
- assert_eq!(info.links.len(), 1);+ assert_eq!(info.links.len(), 0);
This stays below the depth limit and pushes no targets, so only MAX_ACTION_VISITS bounds the traversal. Removing that bound exposes the exponential fan-out.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win
Incomplete-list detection misses most text-budget failures.
reset_form_targets sets incomplete only when *text_budget == 0. spend returns None without changing the budget when bytes.len() > *budget. A field name longer than the remaining non-zero budget therefore returns None while incomplete stays false.
Trigger: a hostile PDF spends most of MAX_LINK_ATTACHMENT_TEXT_BYTES on earlier links. It then lists an excluded field whose name does not fit the remainder. The listed fields are /Fields entries that are valid names or references, so this is a hostile-input scenario. single_action then accepts the action. In exclude mode, reset_form_edit resets the field that the author excluded. In include mode, the same failure can leave an empty list, which single_action drops. A partially resolved include list still resets only some of the listed fields.
This defeats the intent of the "reject incomplete ResetForm exclusion lists" commit.
Fix: report a budget failure from field_target_name and field_qualified_name directly, for example with Result<Option<String>, Incomplete>. Return Err when spend returns None, return Ok(None) for non-field items, and set incomplete = true on Err. Do not infer the failure from *text_budget == 0.
