Four new interface languages: Indonesian, Vietnamese, Hindi and Korean. Each is a complete catalog of 2,578 entries (every (context, English) key the bundled catalogs hold), written from the meaning of the English labels (clean-room), with ATTRIBUTION.toml entries.

What

  • id.tsv, vi.tsv, hi.tsv, ko.tsv, registered in LANGUAGES (22 -> 26) and DATE_LANGUAGES.
  • One @plural form each. Indonesian, Vietnamese and Korean have no number inflection; the Hindi nouns in the catalog read the same for every count.
  • Dates: Indonesian writes month names as they stand; Vietnamese lowers tháng after a day number (7 tháng Ba); Hindi 7 मार्च; Korean 3월 / 토요일. Vietnamese, Hindi and Korean names are not Western European, so the PDF date-text path refuses them and suggests dd.mm.yyyy.
  • Fonts: Indonesian and Vietnamese are Latin (bundled Inter). Hindi uses a Deva craft-fonts face (companion PR in storytold/craft-fonts) or, on desktop, an installed Devanagari face. No craft-fonts face has Hangul, so system_fonts::hangul_fallback() loads one installed face (Malgun Gothic, Apple SD Gothic Neo, Nanum, Baekmuk), never Noto CJK or Source Han (AGENTS.md §1.1); PDFCRAFT_SYSTEM_FONTS=0 turns it off.
  • Fixes the stale ru.tsv SHA-256 in ATTRIBUTION.toml; docs updated.
  • Restores the Telugu system-font fallback that rebasing onto main had dropped from theme.rs / system_fonts.rs while tests/fonts.rs still tested it (the red CI on the earlier pull request).

Tests

  • Registration and persistence, locale-tag resolution, command / All tools / tl!() literal coverage for all four languages, date names, Hangul fallback and its candidate list.
  • cargo fmt --check, cargo clippy --workspace --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo xtask assets, and cargo test for ui-egui, engine and automation pass (built with CRAFT_FONTS_DIR set).

Known limits

Two new complete catalogs (2542 entries each, full coverage of the
uk.tsv key set): Indonesian (id) and Vietnamese (vi), both with a
single plural form per CLDR. Registered in LANGUAGES (22 → 24) with
locale-tag tests. Also adds Devanagari font support (for the upcoming
Hindi catalog) to the fonts crate, and fixes 19 duplicate keys in
ru.tsv that crept in during a previous merge.

Tests: 110 passed, 0 failed.
Two complete catalogs, hi and ko, 2,578 entries each (every
(context, English) key the bundled catalogs hold), registered in
LANGUAGES (24 -> 26) and in the date languages (hi, ko). Both use a
single @plural form.

Korean has no Hangul face in craft-fonts, so desktop builds draw it
with one installed face (Malgun Gothic, Apple SD Gothic Neo, Nanum;
never Noto CJK / Source Han), added after the embedded faces like the
Devanagari fallback. PDFCRAFT_SYSTEM_FONTS=0 turns it off.

Tests: catalog registration and persistence, command / All tools /
tl!() literal coverage for both, date names, Hangul fallback and
candidate list. cargo xtask assets, fmt and clippy are clean. Also
refreshes the ru.tsv SHA-256 in ATTRIBUTION.toml and the docs.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Sonnet 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
Four new complete catalogs (2554 entries each, full coverage of the
uk.tsv key set including the 12 strings that reached main during the
rebase): Hindi (hi), Indonesian (id), Korean (ko), Vietnamese (vi).
All four use a single plural form per CLDR. Hindi uses the Devanagari
font support already in the fonts crate.

Registered in LANGUAGES (22 → 26) with locale-tag and catalog tests.
Also fixes 19 duplicate keys in ru.tsv.

Tests: 114 passed, 0 failed.
The rebase onto main resolved the theme.rs and system_fonts.rs conflicts
in favour of the new Hangul code and deleted upstream's Telugu fallback
(SYSTEM_TELUGU_FALLBACK, telugu_fallback, telugu_candidates,
script_fallback and their tests), while tests/fonts.rs kept the Telugu
tests, so the build failed. Keep both: Telugu restored as it is on main,
Hangul added alongside it through the same script_fallback helper.
Correct 28 context-sensitive Korean labels in the incoming translation, distinguish redaction marking, clearing, and permanent removal, and add a regression test. Document code evidence and outstanding runtime QA.
Rebasing onto newer main replayed ATTRIBUTION.toml with the hashes of the
older base, so every catalog entry failed the xtask manifest check.
Restore main's entries for the catalogs this branch does not touch and
recompute ours (ru and the four new catalogs) from the files as committed.

Hello! I noticed the Korean catalog in #1976 is structurally complete, but some security-relevant redaction terms may confuse users. The current Korean word 검열 normally means censorship; PdfCraft's redact.mark, redact.apply and redact.clear respectively mark, permanently remove and clear pending marks without content removal.

I prepared a dependent draft PR against your i18n-id-vi branch, rather than a duplicate language PR against upstream main: pechnikov2026-star#1. It changes 28 Korean wording entries (including sanitize, form flattening and printer marks), adds a targeted terminology regression test and documents the exact Rust call sites.

Static catalog checks: 2,590/2,590 keys; no placeholder/TSV errors; Rustfmt passes. Cargo tests and actual Windows PDF save/reopen QA are still pending, so this is intentionally a Draft, not a claim that the app has been verified or linguistically signed off by an independent reviewer. Would you prefer these improvements integrated into #1976 directly? I can adapt to your current branch without duplicating your contribution.

Native Korean review + independent runtime verification of the Korean catalog.

I built your branch's Korean catalog into a Linux release binary and ran it, so this is grounded in
observed behaviour rather than a read-through. Your ko.tsv is byte-identical to what I tested
(sha256 b570144be1a0296fa4a95648611709641420efbff44de7845344c1cbe2c37004).

Verified working

  • Language switch and persistence through the control channel: ui.set {key:"language",value:"ko"}
then ui.state returns language: "ko". ui.inspect returns Korean widget labels
(모든 도구, 도구 및 명령 찾기, 추천 도구).
  • Hangul renders. With an installed Hangul face the app logs
interface font fallback: /usr/share/fonts/truetype/nanum/NanumGothic.ttf (face 0), and the whole
interface draws with no replacement boxes.
  • Test suites pass: pdfcraft-ui-egui lib 370 passed / 0 failed; font integration 13 passed;
engine dates 11 passed; cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy -D warnings clean.
  • Date names are right: 1월, 토요일; month and weekday names are identical standalone and after a
day number, so months_with_day: None is correct.

Your claim that no QA had been done is now partly covered — at least on Linux, with an installed
Korean face.

Terminology issues that remain

I agree with the redaction finding in
pechnikov2026-star/pdfcraft#1: 검열
(censorship) is wrong for redaction, and that PR's stage separation (mark / apply / clear) matches
the code. Adobe's own Korean localisation uses 교정 for redaction, which is another option worth
considering instead of a descriptive phrase.

What that PR does not fix:

1. redaction mark still has three different Korean wordings in one feature. After applying
that PR's 28 entries, these remain:

English Korean
Clear redaction marks 제거 대상 표시 지우기
Applied {n} redaction marks… 수정 표시 {n}개가 적용되었습니다…
There are no redaction marks… (2 variants) 수정 표시가 없습니다… / 적용할 수정 표시가 없습니다
Remove redaction marks 제거 대상 표시 삭제
Add redaction mark 제거 대상 표시 추가

So the same object is 제거 대상 표시, 수정 표시 and (before the fix) 검열 표시. 수정 also means
"edit"/"correction" and collides with real editing UI, so a user reading 수정 표시 1개가 적용되었습니다 cannot tell whether content was edited or marked for removal. One term should be
chosen and used in all ten entries.

2. Flatten also has three wordings. After the fix PR, which changes only
Flatten form fields:

English Korean
Flatten comments 주석 병합
Flatten form fields 양식 필드 평탄화
Flatten 병합
Flatten Fill & Sign 채우기 및 서명 병합
This document has no comments to flatten 평면화할 주석이 없습니다
This document has no form fields to flatten 평면화할 양식 필드가 없습니다

병합 (merge) is actively misleading here: per crates/edit/src/flatten.rs, flattening merges
annotation appearances into page content
, but "병합" is also the word for combining documents, so
주석 병합 reads as "merge comments together". Note also that the fix PR makes the tool name and the
error message use different words for one operation (양식 필드 평탄화 vs 평면화할 양식 필드).
Japanese uses one term throughout (統合); Korean should pick one too (평탄화 is the accurate
calque, 고정/정착 read more naturally to non-engineers).

3. Verify and OK share one translation, but they are different actions. Both are 확인:

English Korean Where
OK 확인 dialog accept (crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs.rs)
Verify 확인 "check this file against PDF/A" button (crates/ui-egui/src/standards_ui.rs)

In the Standards dialog, Save as PDF/A / Verify / Close become PDF/A로 저장 / 확인 /
닫기, where 확인 reads as an acknowledgement rather than "run the check". Japanese distinguishes
them (検証) and so does German (Prüfen). 검사 or 검증 would separate it.

4. Collapse and Zoom out share one translation. Both are 축소. Collapse is used for
folding a panel row (crates/ui-egui/src/combine_grid.rs, a11y_ui.rs), which has nothing to do
with zoom; Japanese uses 折りたたむ and German Einklappen. 접기 is the expected word.

These last two are homonym collisions I found by grouping English keys that map to one Korean
string — 124 such groups exist, and most are harmless variants (Page/pages), so I only listed the
ones where the two English keys are genuinely different actions in different parts of the UI.

Not issues (checked, no change needed)

  • 24 entries where source equals translation are all deliberate: product names (JavaScript, ZIP,
PDF Optimizer), technical literals (+LOC, ΔLOC, {0}: {1}) and key-context key names
(Delete, Esc, Ctrl). The key catalog context is what keeps Delete reading as a key while
the command stays 삭제 — that design works.
  • No placeholder, TSV-structure or ellipsis errors in the catalog.

Beyond the catalog

ko.tsv alone will not make Korean work everywhere. For reference, upstream already has #507 and
#1678 for the Hangul file-name/bookmark tofu, and #1484 for shipping a real Hangul UI face — without
one, Korean text falls back to whatever is installed, which is the current release situation for
Chinese too (#826).

I am not claiming native-speaker sign-off on the whole catalog; this review covers the security- and
action-related wording and the rendering/registration path I could execute. Happy to re-test once
the terminology entries change.

Applies the rest of the native-speaker review on storytold#1976 on top of the
merged redaction redesign (fork PR 1): redaction marks read 제거 대상
표시 in all ten entries (not 수정 표시), every Flatten label uses 평탄화
(not 병합, which reads as merging documents, or 평면화), Verify is 검증 so
it no longer collides with OK (확인), and Collapse is 접기 so it no longer
collides with Zoom out (축소). ATTRIBUTION.toml hash updated.
The terminology rationale lives in the review discussion (fork PR 1 on
pechnikov2026-star/pdfcraft and the storytold#1976 thread); docs/ holds the
project's reference documents, not contribution-process notes.

Thank you both — this is exactly the review the catalog needed.

@writingdeveloper Your fork PR #1 is merged into this branch as-is (commit 5eeb645): the stage-aware redaction terminology, the regression test and the wording changes are all in. I only dropped docs/korean-localization-review.md from the tree — its rationale now lives here in the discussion, where docs/ holds the project's reference documents. Happy to restore it if you prefer.

@grapefruit0205 Applied all four remaining findings on top (commit 3a1c029):

  • Redaction marks now read 제거 대상 표시 in all ten entries — the four stragglists (Applied 1/{n}, There are no …, … to apply) moved off 수정 표시, which as you say collides with editing.
  • Flatten is 평탄화 everywhere: the bare tool name, comments, form fields, Fill & Sign (and the "when saving" preference label, which had drifted to 고정), the sanitize description and the "(flattened)" list item. Both 병합 and 평면화 are gone.
  • Verify is 검증 (Standards dialog no longer shares 확인 with OK).
  • Collapse is 접기 (no longer shares 축소 with Zoom out).

ko.tsv's SHA-256 in ATTRIBUTION.toml is updated, cargo xtask assets passes, and the i18n suite is green (118 passed). The running instance you described — language switch, Hangul via the installed Nanum face, date names — matches what we test locally; #1484 for a shipped Hangul face is indeed the remaining gap for release builds.

The same branch also feeds #2183 (Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, stacked on this PR), which went through the same full-catalog audit; its audit fixed the same class of issues you found here (Dutch "kop"/"jj", Danish "redaktion", Swedish On-Blur/word-order), so the methodology transfers.

Upstream moved the Hungarian catalog and std14_metrics forward and added
the Next tab / Previous tab labels (document-tab cycling); the four new
catalogs translate both, and their ATTRIBUTION.toml hashes are
recomputed. The manifest check passes with 274 repository assets.

The stacked branch takes the merged storytold#1976 base (Korean terminology
review included) and main's document-tab cycling labels: Dutch, Danish,
Swedish and Finnish translate Next tab / Previous tab, with their

as_chunks::<4>() gives the pixel array directly; upstream main fails
the new chunks_exact_to_as_chunks lint here, which made every pull
request red under rust-clippy 1.99.0.

📝 Walkthrough

The UI and date registries add Hindi, Indonesian, and Korean. Font handling adds Devanagari selection and embedding, plus Hangul system fallback. Tests and attribution records cover the added language and script support.

Changes: Language and script support

Layer / File(s) Summary
Language registries, date formatting, and attribution
crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/mod.rs, crates/engine/src/dates.rs, ATTRIBUTION.md, ATTRIBUTION.toml
The UI and date registries add Hindi, Indonesian, and Korean. Tests cover locale resolution, translations, date formatting, PDF date-text handling, and catalog coverage. Attribution records cover the three translation catalogs.
Devanagari font selection and fallback
crates/fonts/build.rs, crates/fonts/src/craft.rs, crates/fonts/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/theme.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/fonts.rs
The font crate selects and exports Devanagari UI and document fonts, and the wasm build includes Devanagari faces. The UI fallback chain and font tests include Devanagari.
Hangul system-font fallback
crates/ui-egui/src/system_fonts.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/theme.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/fonts.rs
The UI adds a cached Hangul system-font fallback, platform-specific font candidates, and a public fallback name. Tests check candidate selection and Hangul glyph coverage.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~25 minutes

Change: Feature

Suggested reviewers: duydev, manchitmr, puemmth

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2b445

Korean text may show as replacement boxes in web builds without a Hangul font. The limitation is acknowledged by the author and affects only Korean on web; other languages and platforms are unaffected.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 2b445

Korean can become active without a font capable of displaying it, leaving important action labels and permanent-redaction warnings unreadable. Installed desktop fonts mitigate this where available, but the web path excludes that fallback. The reviewed language and date-writing controls otherwise remain intact.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: Korean activation is not gated on Hangul glyph availability. The installed fallback is excluded on wasm and optional on desktop, while translated action labels and permanent-redaction confirmation remain Korean. In fontless configurations, replacement boxes can therefore obscure the distinction between marking content and permanently removing it. This exposure is newly reachable through the added Korean registry entry; equipped desktops mitigate it, but there is no demonstrated readable-language fallback for unavailable fonts.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified concern affects application sessions using Korean without adequate Hangul coverage, including the web path that excludes installed fonts. Its demonstrated scope is warning and action-label readability, not a cross-tenant or privileged-service compromise.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The concrete failure path is Korean selection or locale resolution, followed by unavailable Hangul glyphs, followed by translated security-sensitive UI rendered as replacement boxes. This can undermine understanding of permanent redaction; no attacker-driven exploitation or bypass of the confirmation itself was established.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The new Hangul loader uses enumerated platform font names through the existing local-font discovery path. Windows environment roots and Unix Fontconfig paths can influence locations, but document text does not supply candidate paths. Existing controls include the system-font opt-out, a metadata size check, a 16-face limit and glyph-probe validation before UI registration.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Font discovery publishes a complete optional result through OnceLock, so repeated and concurrent access shares the initialized result rather than partially assembled font data. Failure is contained as absence, but that containment does not preserve readable Korean warnings.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make Korean activation conditional on usable glyph coverage, or provide a supported bundled face. When coverage is unavailable, retain a readable language for security-sensitive warnings and recovery controls rather than relying solely on successful catalog lookup.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟠 Major | 🏗️ Heavy lift

Provide a Hangul font before offering Korean on the web.

When a web user selects ko, the interface loads Hangul labels. crates/ui-egui/src/theme.rs adds the installed Hangul fallback only on non-wasm targets. crates/ui-egui/src/system_fonts.rs also states that no embedded face has Hangul. Korean labels therefore display as replacement boxes in the web build. Bundle a suitable Hangul face for the web, or do not offer ko where the interface cannot render it.
