Fonts: the pinned craft-fonts revision now has NanumGothic Regular (Hang,Kore), so CI runs the Korean paths with it. storytold/craft-fonts#30 adds NanumGothic Bold and NanumMyeongjo Regular/Bold, so serif and bold sources get matching faces; without them every Korean replacement uses the Gothic Regular. The "no Korean face" branches (clear errors; comments kept and marked) are tested too. The document-side counterpart of the Korean interface: the Korean catalog and the installed Hangul UI face have landed (#1976, #2872). This PR adds what they don't: writing and reading Korean in PDFs. It doesn't touch i18n/, the UI fonts or ui-egui.
What this changes
Korean written into or read from PDFs. Every face comes from craft-fonts and never from an installed font (AGENTS.md §1.4).
Edit text: a replacement with Hangul takes a Korean Type 3 fallback (PCKo, /Name /PCKorean).
Face: NanumMyeongjo for a serif source, NanumGothic otherwise, Bold when the source is bold.
Hanja the Korean face lacks come from the Japanese faces, in the same generated font.
Every glyph has a ToUnicode entry, so the text copies and searches as typed.
Paragraphs rewrap between words through main's line breaking (M7: rewrap Chinese and Japanese text between characters #1827, edit/src/linebreak.rs, which keeps Korean breaking only at spaces); this PR adds no wrapping of its own there, only the Korean face.
Without a Korean face the edit is refused with a clear error that names CRAFT_FONTS_DIR, and the page is left untouched.
Add text (page_add_text): Korean is shaped with harfrust in the item's style (ShapedScript::Korean { serif, bold }).
Grapheme clusters, so conjoining jamo stay one syllable.
Drawn through the shared Type 3 writer, next to Arabic, Hebrew and Thai; Latin and digits stay in the item's standard font.
Lines break between words.
Without the face: a new item is refused, and an existing one stays movable, as for Arabic.
Comments, Fill & Sign, stamps, measurements, form fields: these appearances keep only direct resources, so they have nowhere to put a font.
So a line Helvetica can't draw is drawn as filled glyph outlines of NanumGothic (pdfcraft_fonts::outlined_path).
This covers text boxes and callouts, Fill & Sign text and dates containing Korean, a dynamic stamp's by-line, measurement labels, and form fields whose /DA font is Helvetica.
The words stay in /Contents and /V.
Each outlined line also carries an invisible text layer (3 Tr, UTF-16 in UniKS-UTF16-H over a non-embedded Adobe-Korea1 font), so the text stays searchable and copyable after flattening. The layer's font descriptor is made indirect when the appearance is stored.
Text boxes are sized with the same widths (annot::appearance::text_width), so Korean Fill & Sign text isn't clipped.
A character neither Helvetica nor the face can draw is still marked (PCUndrawn), as before.
A form with its own Korean CID font (UniKS-UCS2-H) keeps using that font.
Reading Korean fonts: a Type0 font whose /Encoding names KSC-EUC-H, KSCms-UHC-H, KSCms-UHC-HW-H, KSCpc-EUC-H, UniKS-UCS2-H or UniKS-UTF16-H is now handled without /ToUnicode:
mixed 1- and 2-byte codes are split correctly;
/W widths are found by Korea1 CID;
text decodes;
edits re-encode into the document's own font.
The CMaps come from main's vendored and patched hayro-cmap (Vendor and patch hayro-cmap for tolerant CMap parsing #3195; pdfcraft-fonts names hayro-cmap, which [patch.crates-io] resolves to vendor/hayro-cmap, so there is one copy with the tolerance fixes), Adobe's BSD CMap resources already on the AGENTS.md §1.1 list, cached once per process. /ToUnicode still wins where it maps.
Rendering: a non-embedded Adobe-Korea1 font (HYSMyeongJo-Medium, Batang, Dotum, …) now draws in NanumMyeongjo or NanumGothic, picked by name or by the serif flag. Before, it drew nothing. The substitution chain (fallback.rs) reports it as a script face.
Run on Windows 11 at the current main base, both with CRAFT_FONTS_DIR pointing at craft-fonts#30 and without it.
cargo fmt --check on fonts, edit, annot, forms, render, engine and automation.
cargo clippy on the same crates with --all-targets -- -D warnings.
Tests on the crates I changed: pdfcraft-fonts (all), pdfcraft-edit --lib, pdfcraft-annot --lib, pdfcraft-forms --lib, pdfcraft-render --lib korean, pdfcraft-engine --lib dates, with and without the faces. Exact counts are in the comment below.
cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets: OK. pdfcraft-fonts gains hayro-cmap, which is already in the tree through hayro-interpret (same version and feature).
Proven to fail without the change:
Edit text: with the Korean branch of type3_faces disabled, 5 Korean edit tests fail.
Comments: with outline drawing disabled, korean_comment_text_is_drawn_as_outlines fails.
CMaps: with the predefined-CMap hook disabled, 5 CMap tests fail (KSC splits as [2,2,1], UHC and UniKS decode to "").
shaping and outlines: korean_is_shaped_with_the_korean_face, korean_is_outlined_with_the_korean_face, korean_document_faces_follow_serif_and_weight, korean_depends_on_craft_fonts_and_says_which_it_got
engine: a Korean Fill & Sign date.
Never-crash
No new unwrap/expect/panic! outside tests.
No input-derived indexing:
CMap code splitting uses get, and a truncated lead byte becomes a 1-byte code;
every encode is bounded, with a saturating capacity;
outline drawing rejects non-finite sizes and positions;
glyph outlines go through the existing bounded_outline.
No unsafe.
hostile_bytes_in_predefined_fonts_never_panic covers all six CMaps (empty input, truncated codes, 0xFF, odd lengths, surrogates, all 256 bytes), and odd_korean_text_never_panics covers lone jamo, half-width jamo and similar inputs.
Provenance
No Adobe asset and no font file committed. The Nanum faces are in craft-fonts#30: Sandoll for NHN/Naver, OFL-1.1, not Source Han or Noto CJK.
The CMap data is the already-approved hayro-cmap resource. No new asset.
Behaviour comes from ISO 32000-2 (§9.7.5 predefined CMaps, §9.6.4 Type 3, §12.5.5 appearances), not from another implementation.
Security
No paths, MCP or network touched.
Parity and reach
parity/acrobat-features.toml:
view.render-cid-fonts notes Korea1 rendering and the Korean CMaps; GB1 and CNS1 still draw nothing.
The edit-text reflow entry notes the Korean fallback.
Reachable headlessly: text_edit, page_add_text, the comment and Fill & Sign tools and form_set all go through these paths. The fill_sign_date_format description now says Korean dates can be written.
Docs updated: docs/localization.md (a new "Korean text in documents" section, including what is not done yet), docs/localization-parity.md, the crates/fonts README, and the ROADMAP.md progress log.
Anything a reviewer should look at first
Outlines instead of a font in annotation and field appearances. It keeps appearance::build dictionary-only and avoids ?. The picture is outlines, and the invisible text layer carries the words, also after flattening.
An alternative is an indirect Type 3 font in the annotation's resources, which needs document access in build.
unwritable() (Fill & Sign dates) now accepts Korean when the face exists. The UI message in js_ui.rs still says "Western European only". I left it alone because it is a catalogued string in every language.
Not covered yet: Korean in redaction overlay text, Create PDF from text and XFA (all still Helvetica-only and refused), vertical Korean, and the web build (its craft-fonts subset doesn't include the Kore faces).
Form fields in a document's own UniKS-* CID font (forms::FontText::Unicode / fonts::UnicodeCMap): unchanged; outlines are only for Helvetica fields.
Nothing on main writes Korean into documents, reads KSC/UHC/UniKS text without /ToUnicode, or renders non-embedded Korea1 fonts (its parity note still says they draw nothing), so nothing was dropped.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Added Korean text support for document editing, comments, form fields, and Fill & Sign, including text shaping, wrapping, and searchable text.
Improved display and text extraction for documents with Korean fonts, including non-embedded Korean fonts.
Korean text that cannot be supported by the available fonts now produces clearer feedback.
Documentation
Added information about Korean document-text support and its limitations.
Rebased onto current main (924c4da) as cb275dd. This PR is now standalone: the Korean interface PR I had stacked it on (#2548) is closed in favour of #2094.
Independent synthetic QA for cb275dd with craft-fonts#30 / 0b037718 (the exact pinned source). Thanks for adding Korean document text support; I tested the actual CLI and independently parsed the saved PDFs.
Working: The installed Windows 0.8.0 CLI refused lossy Korean form flattening, Fill & Sign baking, Edit Text and Add Text. An isolated Ubuntu build from this PR with all four licensed Nanum faces performed all four. The Korean form value was saved correctly, and Edit/Add Text remained extractable and searchable after save/reopen (text_find: 1 hit each). The proposed Helvetica form regression test also passes.
I found two potential follow-ups worth checking:
Search/copy after flattening an outlined appearance. I filled a synthetic Helvetica AcroForm with ApplicantName = "홍길동 서울", saved it, then ran doc_flatten(fields=true) and saved/reopened. The Korean letters remain visibly correct, but text_extract and text_find("홍길동 서울") return no Korean text/0 matches. Independent PyMuPDF and pypdf agree. The same candidate build and PDF, using ApplicantName = "QA_ASCII_POSITIVE_CONTROL" instead, successfully extracts and finds the ASCII value once after flattening. Similarly, a Korean Fill & Sign text annotation is displayed correctly after doc_save(flatten_fill_sign=true) but text_find returns 0 matches. The source comments in crates/fonts/src/outlined.rs clarify that the outlines are the picture while text lives in /V or /Contents; those objects disappear when flattened. This may be an intended limitation, but if searchable/copyable flattened output is a product goal, it may need semantic marked content such as /ActualText, or an explicit limitation note.
Long Korean Fill & Sign text gets clipped. On a synthetic one-page PDF: fill_sign_add(doc=1, page=1, type="text", text="한글 서명 확인 테스트", font_size=16, at=[85,405]). The saved FreeText annotation is only 101.408 × 25.2 pt. With Korean outline glyphs, the phrase wraps to two lines, but the second line is visibly cut at the bottom of that one-line rectangle. flatten_fill_sign=true preserves the same clipped image (pixel-identical), so annotation width/height sizing may need to account for Korean glyph metrics before the appearance is generated.
All inputs are fictional/OFL-font synthetic PDFs; no user documents or font binaries are being shared, and no source branch was changed. I can provide a minimal fixture or command-by-command reproduction if useful. Could you confirm whether the post-flatten text-search limitation is expected, and whether the annotation geometry belongs in this PR's scope?
It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The changes add Korean font selection and shaping, Korean PDF CMap decoding and encoding, and Korean text handling in editing, annotations, forms, rendering, and Fill & Sign. Tests and documentation cover font availability, fallback behavior, text appearance, and searchability.

Korean text support looks sound, and the earlier correctness concerns appear addressed. Before merging, update the Fill & Sign date warning so it no longer says only Western European text is supported, and check the duplicate "Last reviewed" lines in docs/localization-parity.md.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 793de
The reviewed paths keep font selection constrained and reject unsupported new text before changing visible page content. No introduced security defect was established. Risk is low rather than minimal because recovery behavior and compatibility across external PDF readers remain only partially assessed.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated attackable scope is document parsing, rendering, and generated document content within the application. Crafted PDF font names, content bytes, and appearance text reach shared font processing; the traced paths do not grant a new network, credential, or external-font authority.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Predefined Korean decoding accepts exact static CMap names and uses embedded mapping data. Content splitting uses guarded byte access and clamps truncated sequences. Rendering separately checks the Adobe-Korea1 collection before selecting bundled Korean fallback faces.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Korean text replacement rejects missing faces and unsupported glyphs before committing visible page content and resources. Styled preparation can allocate unreferenced document objects before a later failure; comparison found that ordering already present in the PR base, so it is not established as an introduced security regression.

@writingdeveloper Thank you for testing this against real builds. Both findings were right, and both are fixed in a162a120, which is rebased onto main (ec0a965).
1. Search and copy after flattening. It wasn't intended: once flattened, the words in /V and /Contents were gone and only the picture was left.
Each outlined line now also carries an invisible text layer (3 Tr, as OCR layers are). It is written in a Type 0 font with /Encoding /UniKS-UTF16-H over a non-embedded Adobe-Korea1 CID font, horizontally scaled to the outlines' width so a selection covers them. The string is the line's UTF-16BE, so any reader maps it back to Unicode.
An appearance can only have direct resources, but §9.8.1 requires the font descriptor to be an indirect object. So the descriptor is made indirect when the annotation or field stores its appearance.
New test: flattened_korean_comments_keep_their_text (edit). It flattens a Korean Fill & Sign/typewriter comment, reopens the file, finds 홍길동 서울 in the page text and checks that the descriptor is an indirect reference. It fails with the text layer disabled.
2. Clipped Fill & Sign text. The box was sized by Helvetica widths.
annot::appearance::text_width and wrap now measure a line in the face it is drawn with. fill_sign_add, the UI's Fill & Sign placement and the comment font-size growth all size through them, so this one change covers all three.
New test: korean_fill_and_sign_text_is_sized_to_its_outlines (annot). It uses your phrase 한글 서명 확인 테스트 at 16 pt, sized the way fill_sign_add does, and checks that it draws as one outlined line. It fails with the old widths.
Results on Windows 11, with and without craft-fonts#30:
fonts 86, edit 203 and forms 93 pass in both modes; annot 47 passes in both modes after an assertion update.
render (Korean) 2 and engine dates 13 pass.
clippy -D warnings and fmt are clean on the changed crates, and xtask layers/assets are OK.
I haven't re-run PyMuPDF or pypdf here, so a check of the flattened output with them would be very welcome.

Rebased onto current main (80b7d21) as 528403c3. That brought in 828 commits, so the code conflicts needed actual merging:
edit/src/text.rs:main reworked the Type 3 fallback (the bundled Inter face as PCLatin, fallback_names, type3_glyph). I kept that structure and put the Korean branch on top as a FallbackScript (Japanese / Hebrew / Korean). Hangul tries the Korean face of the source's style first, then the Japanese faces, then Inter.
fonts/src/lib.rs and render/src/raster.rs: both sides' additions are kept (inter_width and is_hangul; the new Japanese spacing tests and the Korea1 tests).
hayro-cmap: it is now vendored and patched upstream (Vendor and patch hayro-cmap for tolerant CMap parsing #3195). The workspace [patch.crates-io] already points pdfcraft-fonts' hayro-cmap = "0.1.0" at the vendored copy, so the Korean CMap tests run against the patched parser.
One upstream test changed:hindi_and_korean_month_and_weekday_names asserted that a Korean date is refused for PDFs. With a Korean face this PR writes it, so the test now expects 14 11월 2023 with the face and the refusal without it. Hindi is still refused.

Completes the Korean set next to the NanumGothic Regular that main already
has: a bold sans and a serif (Regular and Bold). PdfCraft picks the face
from the font it replaces (Myeongjo for a serif source, Gothic otherwise,
bold when the source is bold) when it writes Korean into PDFs
(storytold/pdfcraft#2560).
Byte-identical to google/fonts@bd8f81d (the commit the Regular is pinned
to). NanumGothic was designed by Sandoll Communications and NanumMyeongjo
by FONTRIX, both for NHN (Naver), as the fonts' name tables say; neither is
an Adobe design. OFL-1.1. Tagged Hang,Kore like the Regular.
NanumMyeongjo's upstream OFL.txt is the same licence re-wrapped with its
dashes lost to an encoding error, so its directory carries the clean copy
published with NanumGothic (same holder and reserved names).
The exact-row test now keys rows on family and style, so a family can have
more than one face; the existing Hang/Kore tests (every modern syllable,
compatibility jamo, outlines) cover the new faces.
edit/src/text_regions.rs: the styled-paragraph writer now builds fallback fonts itself through write_type3_glyphs, and it always passed "not Hebrew". Korean glyphs there would have gone into fonts named for the Japanese faces. write_type3_glyphs now takes the FallbackScript, and the styled writer derives it from the face it grouped by. New test: korean_in_a_styled_paragraph_uses_korean_fallback_fonts, which fails with the old argument.
annot/src/appearance.rs: the outline text-layer font is added to main's new helvetica_resource(). main also now draws a line's caption, in Helvetica only, so undrawable_text keeps the plain Helvetica check for captions. A Korean caption is marked rather than drawn as ? silently.
fonts/src/pdf.rs, forms/src/appearance.rs, edit/src/added.rs: adapted to Spans, the new overflow handling and latin_width.
CodeRabbit (replied inline)
The Korean edit tests now derive the expected face from the faces the build has, and compare Myeongjo and Gothic outlines only when both exist. They pass with Gothic Regular alone, which is what CI has now.
with_field_appearances_cached now makes the text-layer descriptor indirect before adding the cached appearance to the display copy.

Guard the outline comparison when both styles select different faces.
With only NanumMyeongjo Regular, both Korean style requests select that same face through the fallback chain. The Myeongjo guard still passes, so assert_ne! compares identical outlines and can fail the shaping test.

Korean written into PDFs comes from the craft-fonts Korean faces
(NanumGothic, NanumMyeongjo; storytold/craft-fonts PR), never from an
installed font.
- Edit text: a replacement with Hangul takes a Korean Type 3 fallback
(PCKo) from the face matching the source (Myeongjo for a serif, Gothic
otherwise, Bold when the source is); Hanja the face lacks come from the
Japanese faces. Without a Korean face it is a clear error.
- Add text: Korean is shaped with harfrust in the item's style
(ShapedScript::Korean; conjoining jamo stay one syllable), drawn through
the shared Type 3 writer, and wrapped between words.
- Comments, Fill & Sign text and dates, dynamic stamp by-lines,
measurement labels and form fields whose font is Helvetica draw a
Korean line as glyph outlines of the Gothic face in their appearance
(an appearance has nowhere to keep a font); the words stay in
/Contents and /V, and each outlined line carries an invisible text
layer (UniKS-UTF16-H over a non-embedded Korea1 font) so it stays
searchable once flattened; its descriptor is made indirect when the
appearance is stored. Text boxes are sized with the same widths, so
Korean Fill & Sign text is not clipped. Characters neither Helvetica
nor the face can draw are still marked as before.
- Reading: Type0 fonts whose /Encoding names KSC-EUC-H, KSCms-UHC-H,
KSCms-UHC-HW-H, KSCpc-EUC-H, UniKS-UCS2-H or UniKS-UTF16-H split,
measure, decode and re-encode through hayro-cmap's predefined CMaps
(Adobe's BSD CMap data, already approved) without /ToUnicode.
- Rendering: a non-embedded Adobe-Korea1 font draws in NanumMyeongjo or
NanumGothic instead of nothing; the substitution chain reports it.
Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 5.5 <noreply@anthropic.com>
- KSCpc-EUC-H leads its two-byte codes with 0xA1-0xFD; 0x81-0x83, 0xFE
and 0xFF are codes of their own (checked against hayro-cmap's data).
The range was 0x81-0xFE, so `[0x81, 0x41]` read as one code and lost
both characters. New test: kscpc_euc_one_byte_codes_stay_one_byte.
- Fill & Sign's `unwritable` checks each paragraph as the appearance
draws it: a paragraph with Korean is drawn wholly in the Korean face,
so a WinAnsi character that face lacks (NanumGothic has no U+0192)
is reported too. New test:
korean_paragraphs_are_checked_against_the_korean_face.
- Add text works out whether an item has Hangul once per layout and
passes it to `shaped_layout`, instead of rescanning the whole text
for every word measured while wrapping.

Rebased onto current main (3109bb2) as 793de82b. That brought in 369 commits, mostly the module splits:
Merged with what changed on main
edit:text.rs, text_regions.rs and added.rs are now split into modules. The Korean fallback (FallbackScript, PCKo, fallback_script_of) moved into text/fallback.rs and text_regions/styled.rs. Korean Add text moved into added/layout.rs, draw.rs and store.rs.
annot: the outline helpers stay in appearance.rs, the stamp by-line moved to appearance/symbols.rs, and the descriptor hoisting moved to draw.rs::apply_appearance. One test now uses StyleChange.
forms: the descriptor hoisting moved to values.rs, appearances.rs (display copy) and author/look.rs.
fonts, render: the CMap and Korea1 tests moved to pdf/tests.rs and raster/tests.rs, and the parity evidence paths follow.
CodeRabbit (replied inline), in a separate commit 793de82b
KSCpc-EUC-H leads two-byte codes with 0xA1–0xFD only. 0x81–0x83, 0xFE and 0xFF are one-byte codes (checked against hayro-cmap's data).
Fill & Sign's unwritable checks each paragraph the way the appearance draws it, so ƒ in a Korean line is reported.
Add text works out "has Hangul" once per layout instead of once per measured word.
Both new tests fail with their fix reverted.
Overlap with main: checked for anything that landed meanwhile; nothing is duplicated, so nothing was dropped. #1976/#2872 are interface-side, the CMap tables already resolve to #3195's vendored hayro-cmap, and Edit text uses #1827's Korean rewrapping as is (body reworded to say so).

crates/ui-egui/src/workflows/js_ui.rs:604-610 displays this warning when dates::unwritable returns a non-empty string. A Korean date can return an empty string when a Korean face is built in, but the warning still claims that Fill & Sign supports Western European text only for other refused dates. Update the source message to mention Korean support and update the matching translation entries in crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/*.tsv.
crates/engine/src/dates.rs already contains the corrected “Western European (and Korean) only” engine error. The cited dates.rs:609 line is unrelated.

Update the warning text displayed by the Fill & Sign workflow when
dates::unwritable returns a non-empty string to state that Western European and
Korean text are supported; update the corresponding translation entries in the
UI translation files to match.
Extract the repeated descriptor-hoisting block into a shared helper.
The same block appears in the annotation redraw path and three form appearance-storage paths. Centralize it so every stored appearance applies the ISO 32000-2 §9.8.1 requirement consistently.
