Part 1 of 4, split out of #2184 so each piece is small enough to review. This one is engine-only; the existing dialogs keep working unchanged.

  • Rule parsing is shared and goes through the style and formula checks (Conditional formatting: a rule or threshold with an invalid formula is saved as typed, and Excel can't open the file #1999); icon set thresholds are checked too.
  • home.conditionalFormat takes stopIfTrue, plain format overrides (fill, fontColor, border, bold, italic, underline, strike) and colour-scale/data-bar thresholds. An override equal to what the style already shows is left out, so editing keeps partial borders, patterns, double underlines and dxf_stated.
  • home.manageRules gains show, selection, update, duplicate and set (a listed serialized rule restores exactly, a malformed one is refused), and lists each rule's index, appliesTo, stopIfTrue and editable params. Every action takes the sheet it works on, active or not.

Stack: #2731 → #2732 → #2733 → #2734.

Tests: 6 new engine tests (incl. malformed_overrides_and_thresholds_are_refused) (manage_rules_*, listed_cell_values_read_back_as_the_same_rule, edit_and_restore_keep_format_details_*). cargo xtask ci: fmt, clippy, tests, doctest, assets, layers, parity, keytips pass; the two interaction:: tests that panic on a missing glyph (U+1EBB) fail on main too.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Configure conditional formatting with additional rule types, richer style options, threshold settings, and “Stop If True” behavior.
    • View and filter rules by selection, and review their ranges and total count. Replace, update, duplicate, delete, or reorder rules.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Editing rules preserves existing formatting and correctly updates rule priorities.
    • Invalid rule settings and ranges are rejected, while numeric thresholds and formulas are handled more reliably.

Walkthrough

Conditional-formatting commands now accept additional rule types, style options, and threshold settings. Manage Rules can list, filter, replace, update, duplicate, delete, and reorder rules. Tests cover parsing, serialization, validation, and management operations.

Merge Risk: Low · up to d7917

Rules created with null-valued format overrides can end up with no visible format, and percent-based Top/Bottom rules accept ranks that Excel does not allow. Both are narrow edge cases with safe outcomes. They are worth fixing, but neither is likely to cause serious failures.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to d2323

The expanded operations retain validation-before-mutation and existing undo support. No introduced security vulnerability was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns protected-sheet permissions and callers restoring snapshots after intervening edits.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated attackable state is the conditional-format rule list of a caller-selected worksheet in the session's current workbook, including inactive worksheets. Targeting inactive worksheets predates this PR; the new operations broaden manipulation of that state without demonstrating a new document or tenant boundary crossing.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The generic protection check compares locked-cell contents, not conditional-format rule changes. Neither the base add, clear and manager mutation paths nor the expanded manager applies a dedicated conditional-format permission gate. This condition predates the PR; its intended permission policy remains unresolved rather than a verified new bypass.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Individual mutations are synchronous and priorities are renumbered afterward, but indices identify current positions rather than durable rule identities. Set unconditionally replaces the complete list, and invalid update indices may succeed without changing a rule. Callers cannot infer stale-snapshot conflict detection from this API.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Define the protected-sheet policy for conditional-format mutations explicitly. If permission enforcement is intended, apply it consistently to existing add and clear operations as well as update, duplicate and set, rather than treating only the new manager operations as the boundary.

Reject malformed non-null override values instead of ignoring them silently.

rule_style drops malformed non-null fill, fontColor, border, and boolean override values. This lets home.conditionalFormat and home.manageRules accept a rule with an unchanged or incomplete format. Missing or null values should remain “no override,” but other invalid values should return an error.

Validate icon-set threshold lengths for serialized rules.

home.manageRules validates serialized CfRule values with check_cf_rule, but that check validates only threshold formulas. It does not validate the threshold count. A serialized IconSet rule with an invalid count can therefore be stored. The evaluator then replaces that list with default thresholds, so the stored rule does not produce the caller-supplied thresholds.

Apply the same count check used for params to the shared validator. Preserve the supported icon_count and icon_count - 1 lengths.

Ignore null overrides when you choose the base style.

Lines 208-220 treat a null override as "no override". The base-style branch at Line 203 tests rule.get(*k).is_some(), and that test is true for null. As a result, {"type": "blanks", "fill": null} starts from Style::default() instead of the default lightRedFillDarkRedText preset. The rule is stored with no visible format. A client that sends every override key, with null for unset keys, always gets an empty format.

The test at crates/engine/src/cmd/insert.rs Line 451 checks only is_ok(). It does not detect this behavior.

Review notes on the engine part (comment only; I did not build or run the GridCraft tests here, I read the diff against current main).

Overlap with open PRs (checked the open and closed conditional-format PRs):

Excel comparison (real Excel 16.0 via COM, new temporary workbook, closed without saving):

  • Top/Bottom rank: Excel accepts Rank 1 to 1000 for items, but for percent only 1 to 100 (Rank = 101 with Percent = True and Rank = 1001 / 0 both raise "Value does not fall within the expected range"). The engine clamps rank to 1..=1000 whatever percent is, so a Top 500% rule is accepted and saved.
  • ModifyAppliesToRange accepts multi-area ($A$1:$A$3,$C$1:$C$3) and whole-column ($B:$B) ranges, so appliesTo should too (see Conditional formatting: Rules Manager #2733).
  • Icon sets: Workbook.IconSets.Count is 20 in Excel; the dialog in Conditional formatting: New/Edit Formatting Rule dialog #2732 offers 6.

I did not open any of the dialogs in Excel (COM cannot drive them), so nothing here is a claim about Excel's dialog layout.

Antxis77 and others added 2 commits November 1, 2026 22:19
…me.manageRules

Rule parsing is shared and goes through the style and formula checks
(storytold#1999); icon set thresholds are checked too. home.conditionalFormat
takes stopIfTrue, plain format overrides (fill, fontColor, border, bold,
italic, underline, strike) and colour-scale/data-bar thresholds; an
override equal to what the style already shows is left out, so editing
keeps partial borders, patterns, double underlines and dxf_stated.

home.manageRules gains show, selection, update, duplicate and set (a
listed serialized rule restores exactly, a malformed one is refused),
and lists each rule's index, appliesTo, stopIfTrue and editable params.
Every action takes the sheet it works on, active or not.

This is the engine half the New/Edit Formatting Rule dialog and the
Rules Manager build on; the existing dialogs keep working unchanged.

Limit the Top/Bottom percent rank to 1–100.

Line 350 clamps rank to 1–1000 for every rule, even when percent is true. A request for "Top 500%" is accepted and stored as rank: 500, percent: true. The PR discussion reports that Excel accepts 1–100 for percent ranks. The evaluator in cf.rs then clamps k to the number of cells, so the rule highlights every numeric cell. The saved file also contains a value that Excel does not accept from its own UI. Make the upper bound depend on percent.
