Move DeckCraft to the pinned egui 0.37 and winit forks, preserving main 80f13011 and its table-cell selection, AutoFormat, edit-point history, fill controls, status accessibility and GPU-test serialization. Adapt screenshot callbacks, hidden and repeated UI passes, IME reset handling and accessibility. Keep document-only shortcuts inactive on the start screen while Open, Actions, Preferences and the File menu remain available. IME deletion preserves the new point-type undo state.

Restore the complete permitted Latin font catalog alongside migration fallbacks. Required builds verify Inter/BIZ faces, plus LXGW for native builds; broken optional Latin input preserves the other fonts. The web subset stays bounded. All three workflows select craft-fonts 37827adc41fd165f9a9234ac40f94dbad353aa69, which is already published.

Review fixes require BIZ UDPGothic Bold for native builds while preserving the Regular-only web subset. Combo boxes expose their purpose separately from their selected value, and number fields and stepper buttons use their visible row labels. Split complex IME, ribbon and font helpers while preserving behavior.

Validation: the required-font regression and all eight CI stages passed, including WASM: 2,058 passing test executions, zero failures and six ignored across 61 summaries. Counts include repeated executions. The missing-Bold regression failed with the old acceptance behavior and passed with the fix; combo-box tests retain their value assertions. Independent review checked the refactors and identified the test queries corrected before the final passing run.

Remaining checks: remote CodeRabbit and SonarCloud must rerun on this commit. Native/browser GUI acceptance, native IME, final platform/package checks and paired app performance remain open. Long-paragraph IME queries still scan a paragraph prefix/suffix; this change corrects the prior bounded-cost claim but does not establish bounded runtime. Human review and human merge are required.

The documentation follow-up describes 176 migration-touched functions and regression assertions, including capture admission and completion, IME fixtures, font requirements, dialog controls and slideshow state. Independent review corrections are included. Runtime code and dependency pins are unchanged by this follow-up. The required-font regression and all eight local CI stages passed again: 2,058 passing test executions, zero failures and six ignored across 61 summaries. Remote CI and CodeRabbit must qualify this new commit; the native/browser, IME, packaging and performance checks above remain open.

Summary by CodeRabbit

    • Added horizontal scrolling for crowded ribbon controls and clearer, separate actions for split-button menus.
    • Expanded font coverage, including native Simplified Chinese fallback and additional language and symbol fonts.
    • Presentation playback now advances while its window is hidden.
    • Added safeguards and clearer error reporting for screenshots.
  • Accessibility
    • Improved accessible names and control roles across menus, dialogs, and editing controls.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved media playback updates, trackpad rotation handling, and thumbnail scrolling.
  • Documentation
    • Updated font attributions and included notices and font licence information in packages.

Preserve current-main document and PDF behavior alongside the reviewed input, capture, font, ribbon and notice-packaging migration.

Validation: cargo xtask ci passed all eight stages, with 1,877 workspace tests and three doctests passed, six tests ignored, strict native lint and 23 WASM crates checked. Native GUI, platform and performance qualification remains separate.
Reconcile current main, preserve immutable dependency pins and add shortcut,
accessibility, multi-pass and IME regressions.

Walkthrough

This pull request updates IME handling, font loading and packaging, and the egui-based UI. It adds bounded screenshot capture, ribbon scrolling and split-button interactions, and clock-driven updates for hidden presentations.

Changes: Text and IME handling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Engine surrounding text and composition state
crates/engine/src/cmd/text.rs, crates/engine/src/keys.rs, crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/tools.rs
The engine adds bounded surrounding-text queries and character- or byte-count deletion. Deletion preserves selection direction and records one undo entry outside composition. Session methods settle compositions before selected actions and expose a settle counter.
Host hooks and IME reset handling
apps/deckcraft/src/main.rs, apps/deckcraft-web/src/web.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/ime_tests.rs
Native and web hosts install IME pass hooks. The web shell forwards current raw input and runs app logic through the eframe logic callback. Tests cover composition settling, reset completion, and stale input events.

Font inputs, validation, and distribution

Layer / File(s) Summary
Font pins and build inputs
.github/workflows/ci.yml, .github/workflows/freebsd.yml, .github/workflows/release.yml, Cargo.toml, crates/fonts/*, crates/engine/src/tests.rs
The workflows align on a craft-fonts pin, and CI checks for the simplified-Chinese manifest. Font builds support optional and required inputs, platform filtering, and required-face validation.
Font fallback and UI font checks
crates/ui-egui/Cargo.toml, crates/ui-egui/src/theme.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/uifonts.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/ime_tests.rs
The UI font list adds script-specific fonts and a native-only Chinese fallback. Tests check font coverage, Hebrew text editing, and font input limits.
Font attribution and package contents
ATTRIBUTION.md, NOTICE, docs/localization-parity.md, packaging/common.sh, packaging/linux/flatpak/*, packaging/windows/*
Attribution documents font sources and licences. Packaging copies NOTICE and conditionally includes craft-font licence files in Windows packages.

UI migration and interaction changes

Layer / File(s) Summary
egui upgrade and UI control metadata
Cargo.toml, crates/ui-egui/Cargo.toml, crates/ui-egui/src/{backstage,canvas,credits,dialogs,eyedropper,fillui,opening,panes,selpane,sorter,squiggles,status,thumbs,toast,widgets}.rs
The UI updates egui dependencies and accessibility metadata. Controls use scoped or unique IDs and gain accessible names or label associations. Language names fall back to language tags when glyphs are unavailable.
Ribbon scrolling and split-button actions
crates/ui-egui/src/ribbon.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/widgets.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/split_button_tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/last_color_tests.rs
The ribbon scrolls through overflowing content. Split-button main areas perform primary actions, while option areas open menus. Tests cover interactions with both areas.
Hidden presentation timing and media updates
crates/ui-egui/src/show.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/media.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/opening.rs
Hidden presentation logic advances clock-driven actions from a visible-frame time anchor. Media clock updates are separated from video texture updates. Opening attempts carry a generation value.
UI interaction and input tests
crates/ui-egui/src/backstage_tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/{huge_deck_tests,paragraph_dialog_tests,pattern_fill_tests,preferences_tests,replacefonts_tests,ui_soak_tests}.rs
Tests cover start-screen shortcuts, accessible control queries, ribbon overflow, and explicit mouse-wheel sources.

Screenshot capture

Layer / File(s) Summary
Capture admission and completion
crates/ui-egui/src/capture.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/control.rs
Screenshot requests use request, image, and aggregate memory limits. The registry waits for settled geometry, correlates callbacks by token, and validates and retries completions. Responses can write PNG files or return inline data.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected automation surface exercises authority over the running application's document session and configured screenshot writer. Callers already able to reach the localhost protocol could invoke engine commands before this PR; the inspected changes do not demonstrate additional remote reachability or a new privilege tier.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Screenshot callbacks hold weak references to token-bound completion slots and cannot directly save files or send replies. Application-thread draining checks completion geometry and document identity before transferring a result to the screenshot writer. Cancellation removes the strong request owner and marks its slot cancelled.
  • observed — Synthetic input records document UID and layout/modal target state, retracts stale injected batches, and defers document-changing background work while a batch is live. The base hook had no comparable target binding. Tool and selection-target identity are not included in the new target key; this omission alone does not establish a newly introduced cross-document or privilege-boundary failure.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Capture reservations remain charged through encoding and writing. Handled encoding errors, writer errors, and missing-writer errors return to the caller, which releases the reservation before attempting the reply. Retry and terminal failure paths also release their request reservations.
  • observed — Capture explicitly leaves same-size native surface recreation and hidden-browser capture unqualified. The base also lacked surface-generation validation, so a new stale-image exposure is not established; callback provenance under the migrated backend remains unresolved.

229-233: Trivial · Performance & Scalability · Poor tradeoff

The surrounding-text walk is not bounded inside a long paragraph.

The doc comments say the query "never visits the rest of the body" and that "a megabyte body costs no more than a short one". That is true across paragraphs. It is not true inside one paragraph:

  • walk_forward iterates committed_chars(para, …) from character 0 and skips i < at.
  • logical_between iterates from character 0 of a.0 and skips i < from.

When a single paragraph is 1 MB and the caret is near its end, ime_surrounding walks about 1M characters several times. observe_ime calls ime_surrounding on every accepted UI pass. The caret blink alone requests a repaint every 300 ms, so this cost repeats while the user edits.

The fix is to skip whole runs before iterating characters. committed_chars_rev already computes run start offsets.

♻️ Proposed fix: start the forward iterator at a character offset
-fn committed_chars(p: &Paragraph, comp: Option<(usize, usize)>) -> impl Iterator<Item = (usize, char)> + '_ {
-    p.runs
-        .iter()
-        .flat_map(|run| run.content().chars())
-        .enumerate()
-        .filter_map(move |(i, ch)| (!comp.is_some_and(|(s, e)| i >= s && i < e)).then_some((i, ime_char(ch))))
-}
+fn committed_chars_from(p: &Paragraph, comp: Option<(usize, usize)>, from: usize) -> impl Iterator<Item = (usize, char)> + '_ {
+    let mut at = 0usize;
+    p.runs
+        .iter()
+        .filter_map(move |r| {
+            let start = at;
+            at += r.char_len();
+            (at > from).then_some((start, r))
+        })
+        .flat_map(move |(start, r)| {
+            let skip = from.saturating_sub(start);
+            r.content().chars().enumerate().skip(skip).map(move |(k, ch)| (start + k, ch))
+        })
+        .filter_map(move |(i, ch)| (!comp.is_some_and(|(s, e)| i >= s && i < e)).then_some((i, ime_char(ch))))
+}

After that, call committed_chars_from(para, …, at) in walk_forward and committed_chars_from(para, …, from) in logical_between. Then remove the i < at and i < from skips.

Do not use internal spinner IDs as accessible names.

spinner builds its accessible names from the id parameter. Callers pass internal keys such as "fh", "fw", "mleft", "lw", "tdur", "adelay" and "bg-ox". Some callers pass formatted IDs like "{id}-pos-{sel}". Screen readers will announce "fh value", "Increase fh" and "Decrease adelay". These names do not describe the control.

Add a label: &str parameter to spinner, or a spinner_named variant. Pass the visible row label ("Height", "Delay", "Offset X"). Build the names from it:

♻️ Proposed change
-        let r = ui.add(egui::TextEdit::singleline(&mut text).desired_width(width).font(theme::font(12.0))).accessible_name(format!("{id} value"));
+        let r = ui.add(egui::TextEdit::singleline(&mut text).desired_width(width).font(theme::font(12.0))).accessible_name(format!("{label} value"));
-        up.widget_info(|| egui::WidgetInfo::labeled(egui::Role::Button, true, format!("Increase {id}")));

+        down.widget_info(|| egui::WidgetInfo::labeled(egui::Role::Button, true, format!("Decrease {label}")));

Update the callers in panes.rs, fillui.rs and ribbon.rs, which already have the visible label next to the call.

Name these combo boxes by their purpose, not their current value.

album_choice and the date-language combo box pass the selected text (label, lang_label) as the accessible name. The name changes when the user picks a different item. A screen reader then announces "Fit to slide" or "English (United States)" without the purpose of the control ("Picture layout", "Language").

Other combo boxes in this change use the better pattern. choice takes a name argument. font_combo sets the name from the field label and the value through current_text_value.

Add a name: &str parameter to album_choice. Pass the visible labels ("Picture layout", "Frame shape", "Album theme"). Use "Language" for the date dialog. Set the selected text through current_text_value:

… 0.37's wheel source and media clock (#1350)

BBQ-MAN added a commit to BBQ-MAN/deckcraft that referenced this pull request Oct 29, 2026
Six rows named text that is no longer in the code: "Pixels of this colour
become transparent:" (Set Transparent Color now picks by clicking, 9eacd99),
"Start a conversation" (gone with the egui 0.37 migration, storytold#1350), and
"top left"/"top right"/"bottom left"/"bottom right", which nothing uses (the
gradient directions are "From top left"… and keep their rows). 1,582 rows.

Main has no interface-language mechanism of its own, so nothing else is
dropped; the Hangul interface glyphs already reuse main's storytold#101 fallback.
