Tables: dragging across cells selects a range of cells - #1282
A drag inside a table selected text in the cell where it started and never left that cell, so there was no way to select a range of cells with the pointer. docs/ui-parity.md listed it as missing ("no cell-range selection by dragging across cells"). The engine already had a cell range (table.selectCells), and Merge Cells, Shading, Borders, Cell Margins and Align read it, but no gesture set it and the canvas did not show it.
While the caret is in a table cell, a drag into another cell of the table selects the cells between the two, and the canvas shades them. Back in the first cell, the drag selects text there again. A range that touches a merged cell takes in all of it.
With a range selected, Shift+arrow moves the cell the range was extended to; the cell it started from stays.
Run and paragraph formatting (bold, font, size, alignment and the rest) apply to the selected cells only. Before, they applied to every cell of the table.
Delete and Backspace clear the text of the selected cells and keep the table. Copy and Cut take their text, with a tab between cells and a line per row.
Shading, Borders, Cell Margins and Align on a range take in the merged cells it touches.
A press in the table while a range is selected puts the caret in the cell under the pointer, or starts a new range when dragged.
ROADMAP.md and docs/ui-parity.md record it.
Tests:
dragging_across_cells_selects_a_range_of_cells drags across cells and back, extends with Shift+arrow, formats, deletes, cuts, clicks back into a cell, and covers ranges that reach into a merged cell. It fails without the range on drag (the selection stays in the first cell), and it fails when the formatting filter, the Delete step, Shift+arrow, the merged-cell growth or the Cut text is taken out.
The branch has main at 38d2ade merged in; the ROADMAP.md conflict kept both lines, and the docs/ui-parity.md conflict kept main's new row for clicking a text box frame next to this change's table cells row.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Select table-cell ranges by dragging or using Shift+arrow keys; ranges include merged cells in full.
Copy selected cell text, and apply formatting only to cells in the selected range.
Bug Fixes
Delete or cut selected cell text without removing the table; undo restores cleared text.
Selected cells are highlighted. Returning a drag to its starting cell resumes text selection, and clicking a cell exits range selection to begin editing.
While the caret is in a table cell, a drag into another cell of the
table now selects the cells between them. The range takes in every
merged cell it touches, and the canvas shades the selected cells.
Moving back into the first cell returns to a text selection there.
Shift+arrow moves the cell the range was extended to, and the cell it
started from stays.
With a range selected, run and paragraph formatting apply to those
cells only. Delete clears their text and keeps the cells and the table,
and Copy and Cut take their text, with a tab between cells and a line
per row. Shading, Borders, Cell Margins and Align take in the merged
cells the range touches. A press in the table starts again in the cell
under the pointer.

Walkthrough
The change adds table-cell range selection by dragging or using Shift+arrow. Selected ranges include touched merged cells. Copy, formatting, and Delete act on selected cells, and the canvas highlights the range.

Summary
Select and display cell ranges crates/engine/src/cmd/table.rs, crates/engine/src/tools.rs, crates/engine/src/keys.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs
Dragging and Shift+arrow select table-cell ranges. Range bounds include touched merged cells. The canvas highlights selected cells.
Copy and Cut produce tab- and newline-separated selected-cell text. Delete clears selected-cell text without removing the table. Formatting applies only to selected cells. Tests and documentation cover the behavior.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 68c21
The table-cell selection change is ready to merge after normal checks; no new blocking issue was established.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 68c21
The change reuses existing editing and undo mechanisms and does not appear to expand access or privileges. Its main integration risk is keeping cell-range ownership consistent across pointer, keyboard and command interactions.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected changes affect presentation content and clipboard output within the existing session authority. They do not establish a new identity, credential or cross-service authority transition; formatting cannot exceed its previous all-cells-per-target-table scope.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Copy, implicit cell deletion and keyboard range extension require the selected shape to match the range's table. Formatting separately filters ranges by table identity; a missing or mismatched range preserves the prior whole-table formatting fallback rather than expanding target-shape authority.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — Selection ownership is not uniformly reset: Tab changes shape selection without clearing the stored cell range, and table commands without an explicit target can prefer that range's table. Both behaviors exist at the comparison base. This PR adds pointer reachability and highlighting for the range; the identified effect remains presentation-targeting consistency, not an established privilege-boundary bypass.

A drag inside a table selected text in the cell where it started and never left that cell, so there was no way to select a range of cells with the pointer.
docs/ui-parity.mdlisted it as missing ("no cell-range selection by dragging across cells"). The engine already had a cell range (table.selectCells), and Merge Cells, Shading, Borders, Cell Margins and Align read it, but no gesture set it and the canvas did not show it.PowerPoint for Mac's steps for merging cells start with "drag the pointer across the cells that you want to merge", and the steps for deleting cell content say that the cell itself is not deleted: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/merge-split-or-delete-table-cells-in-powerpoint-d58e60ea-8994-4356-b1ef-5437ea59fd9b. Shift and the arrow keys extend a cell selection: https://web.archive.org/web/20231103075911/https://www.indezine.com/products/powerpoint/learn/tables/2013/select-table-rows-columns-ppt.html. Copy and Cut as tab-separated text, Backspace, the return to a text selection, and the merged-cell growth follow DeckCraft's existing text and table commands; the pages above do not describe them.
