feat(auth): token registry 2/4 — check long-lived tokens against the registry, revoke - #1404
Updated 29 Oct (Swaroop's ask): the registry's kind is now admin | merchant (it was s2s | merchant). admin = a token from POST /auth/s2s/token; merchant = a token from POST /merchant with issue_token. Only the name changed: no behaviour, table or migration-number change. "S2S" below still names the POST /auth/s2s/token route.
Rebased 29 Oct onto releasec81dfb2 (head 52c0fbc1). release took migration 085 (WhatsApp delivery receipts), so this stack's migrations moved up by one (086–089); the numbers in this description are updated, nothing else in the change moved. Re-run on this commit: pytest tests/crm 1647 passed, 15 skipped (as CI) / 1662 passed with the test database (all migrations applied in order to a fresh Postgres) · pytest tests outside tests/crm 3224 passed · pyrefly 0 · black / isort / autoflake clean · check_migrations + check_crm_boundaries OK. The test counts further down are from when the PR was first raised.
Stacked on #1403 (token registry 1/4). Base: feat/token-registry-1-mint.
Why
After 1/4, every new long-lived token is written to token_registry at mint. But:
nothing reads the registry yet, so a token still can't be revoked;
the long-lived tokens already in use (nautilus relay, dragontts, per-merchant webhook secrets, admin S2S tokens) aren't in it, and nobody has a full list of them.
This PR makes every verifier consult the registry. Old tokens get found by being used (observe mode), and an admin can revoke any registered token.
The registry check in every verifier; unknown tokens registered as backfilled; admin list + revoke
revoked tokens refused; a 503 if the registry can't be read
3/4
Rotate with a grace period; login tokens cut off by users.tokens_valid_after; deactivating a user or merchant revokes its tokens
rotation and deactivation take effect
4/4
Enforce: unknown tokens refused (after the observe period + reconcile)
unknown tokens refused
What this PR does
1. rbac_token_manager.authenticate(token, connection)
It runs verify_rbac_token (unchanged), then the registry check:
Which tokens: one that carries a jti, lives longer than a login session (max(JWT_ACCESS_TOKEN_EXPIRE_MINUTES, 60 min)), or has no iat. Login, launch and signup tokens skip the check entirely: no read, no row.
The lookup: by sha256 hash.
Revoked (revoked_at <= now()) → 401, same as any bad token.
Never seen → registered as source = backfilled with the token's own claims, created_by NULL, and let through. This is observe mode. Six concurrent first uses produce one row (ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING, then a re-read).
Registry unreadable → 503 "Authentication temporarily unavailable". Fail closed, but a caller won't read it as "your token is bad".
Per-pod cache of 30 s per token. A revoke made on another pod lands within 30 s. The pod that handled the revoke drops its cached read at once.
last_seen_at, last_seen_from, last_route are written at most every 5 minutes per token.
last_seen_from is the X-Forwarded-For chain as received, or the direct peer when there's none. On the GCP load balancer the caller is the first entry; the existing client_ip helper takes the last, which is the balancer.
last_route is the route template.
This is bookkeeping only. A failed write is logged, the request goes on, and it isn't retried on every request.
2. All seven verify sites go through it
Site

get_current_user_with_rbac (180 routes)

The comments that said "no DB round trip" or "revoke = let it expire or re-register" are corrected.
3. Admin-only routes
GET /auth/tokens:kind, merchant_id (matches the token's merchant_ids), include_revoked (default false), limit ≤ 500, offset. Newest first. Rows carry hashes and claims, never a token.
POST /auth/tokens/{id}/revoke with {"reason": "..."}. The id is the token's jti (a uuid).
In one statement, it sets revoked_at / revoked_by / revoke_reason and clears any merchants.s2s_token that holds the token. The match is by hash, among the token's own merchants, so the merchant's webhooks and CRM pushes stop with it.
Answers: 404 unknown id, 409 already revoked, 422 non-uuid id or blank reason.
Response: the row as revoked, plus merchant_tokens_cleared.
Admin role only (require_admin). A narrowed S2S token is a reseller, so it gets 403.
Rotate, the login-token cut-off, and revoke-on-deactivation are 3/4. Refusing unknown tokens is 4/4.
Revoke takes up to 30 s to reach other pods. That's the cache window.
A database outage now also refuses long-lived tokens (503) once a pod's 30 s cache expires. Login tokens are unaffected. Most of those calls write to the database and would fail anyway.
Migration 087 is also used by several open PRs. Whichever merges second renumbers.
CI runs only tests/crm. The new tests are run by hand; results below.
Open from 1/4 (D8): a failed registry write during POST /merchant with issue_token leaves a merchant without a token. Rotate in 3/4 gives a way to issue one later.
a long-lived token without a jti is checked by hash;
no iat → checked.
The decision:
a live row passes;
revoked → 401;
a revocation dated later → not yet;
registry error → 503;
a bad signature is refused before the registry.
What an unknown token registers as: its own claims and times; merchant:<id> → kind merchant; the jti kept as the id.
The cache: one read per window; a revoke lands when the window ends; forget.
Last seen:
stale → stamped with the chain and the route template;
the peer when there's no chain;
capped at 200 characters;
fresh → skipped;
over 5 minutes → rewritten;
a failed write neither refuses nor retries.
The accessor's find-or-register: an existing row means no insert; an absent one gets one ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING insert with source = backfilled and created_by NULL; a lost race → re-read; nothing found → raises.
SQL builders: only the observe insert tolerates a conflict; revoke matches the stored token by the token's merchants and hash; the list hides revoked rows unless asked.
Every door goes through authenticate: the dependency (and passes its request), feature flags, CRM s2s, both webhooks. The websocket is covered in tests/test_stt_stream.py.
Admin routes:
non-admins get 403 on both;
unknown id → 404;
twice → 409;
a revoke drops this pod's cached read;
a blank reason is refused.
Existing tests moved onto authenticate:
tests/crm/test_crm_auth.py: its three verify_rbac_token stubs.
tests/test_stt_stream.py: the websocket auth stub, which is now async, plus 4 handler stubs as AsyncMock.
tests/breeze_buddy/test_token_registry.py: the fake row gets NULLs for the 087 columns.
Mutation check: 35/35 killed. Each one breaks one line:
every token treated as short-lived; a jti no longer forcing the check; a missing iat skipping it;
a registry error letting the token through, or answering 401;
no cache; a cache that never expires; forget as a no-op;
the merchant kind never detected;
last_seen written on every request; a failed seen write refusing, or being retried;
the XFF chain ignored; uncapped fields; the route template ignored;
the dependency dropping the request; the websocket back on the plain verify;
an existing row re-inserted; a lost race not re-read; a seen token registered as minted; the observe insert failing on conflict;
the list showing revoked rows; revoke clearing any merchant's token;
list or revoke open to non-admins; 404/409 swapped; revoke keeping the cached read; a blank reason accepted;
each of the five other doors back on the plain verify.
On a throwaway Postgres 17 with the network blocked:
087 table rules: 3/3, rolled back.revoked_at alone is refused; a blank reason is refused; all three together are accepted. Re-running 087 is a no-op.
End to end through the real routes: 26/26, 0 rows left.
A login token: /auth/me 200, no row.
A minted S2S token passes, with no duplicate row, and last_seen holds the XFF chain and /agent/voice/breeze-buddy/auth/me.
An old 90-day token without a jti: 6 concurrent first uses all return 200 and leave exactly one backfilled row (kind admin, created_by NULL, claims and exp copied).
Merchant token:
the list returns exactly it, and no token string appears in the response;
revoke → 200 with merchant_tokens_cleared = 1, merchants.s2s_token is NULL, and who / when / why are recorded;
it's hidden from the list unless include_revoked=true.
S2S token: revoke → its next request is 401, while the admin's login token still works.
Refusals: a second revoke → 409; unknown id → 404; non-uuid → 422; blank reason → 422; a reseller token listing → 403.
Registry table renamed away: a long-lived token → 503, a login token → still 200, and with it back the old token passes again.

Walkthrough
The change adds registry-backed checks for long-lived RBAC tokens, including backfilling, revocation checks, registry caching, and last-seen updates. It adds admin endpoints to list and revoke registry entries, database support for revocation and observation metadata, and updates HTTP, WebSocket, CRM, webhook, and feature-flag authentication call paths.
Registry entries include revocation and last-seen metadata. Database queries and accessors support lookup, listing, revocation, last-seen updates, and conflict-safe registration of previously unseen tokens.
Authentication checks eligible tokens against the registry and records last-seen metadata. HTTP and WebSocket dependencies, CRM authentication, feature flags, and webhook handlers use the asynchronous authentication flow.
Admin token listing and revocation app/api/routers/breeze_buddy/auth/__init__.py, app/api/routers/breeze_buddy/auth/handlers.py, app/schemas/breeze_buddy/token_registry.py, tests/breeze_buddy/test_token_registry_observe.py
The auth router adds token-list and token-revoke endpoints. Admin handlers return paginated registry entries or revoke a token, with 404 for unknown IDs and 409 for already-revoked IDs.
Apply migration 087 before deploying, bound optional authentication bookkeeping, and fix local revocation invalidation before merging. Registry outages also need a distinguishable STT response. These are actionable rollout and authentication risks, although the stale-cache exposure is bounded to 30 seconds.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title "feat(auth): token registry 2/4 — check long-lived tokens against the registry, revoke" names the two main changes: registry checks for long-lived RBAC tokens and the revoke capability. The changeset matches this. It adds registry lookups in the authenticate flow across the verification sites, adds admin list and revoke endpoints, and adds migration 087. The title is long at 85 characters, and the "2/4" series marker tells reviewers little about the change itself. Those points lower clarity but do not make the title off-topic or vague.

list_tokens_handler and revoke_token_handler gate access with require_admin. The admin check is equivalent, but the denial warning and 403 detail do not name the action. As per coding guidelines, admin-only endpoints call require_admin_access(current_user, "action description").
No edit is proposed. Two require_admin_access helpers exist, in numbers/rbac.py and merchants/rbac.py. Which one applies, and whether its current_user.role != "admin" comparison matches UserRole, is not established from the inspected code.

Add single-flight coordination to the token registry cache-miss path.
_registry_row misses _registry_cache, then awaits find_or_register_seen_token. The cache is written only after that await returns. Concurrent requests for the same long-lived token that arrive during the lookup each miss the cache and each issue their own registry read. The first lookup also runs an insert when no row exists. Every request then waits for a pool connection. This adds latency for that window and multiplies reads. The reads do not fail, so the burst is transient. Each pod sees one burst per token per 30-second cache expiry. Coalesce concurrent misses per token_hash, for example with a per-hash asyncio.Lock or a shared in-flight future. Re-check _registry_cache after the lock is acquired.

verify_rbac_token accepts a signed token whose iat is a numeric string. authenticate then passes that string into _is_long_lived, where claims["exp"] - iat raises TypeError. The exception is not caught in authenticate. The token must carry no jti and must be signed with the server key. Normalize iat and exp to integers once after decoding.

Concurrent requests can read the same stale cache entry and each issue the unconditional UPDATE. This causes redundant database I/O during bursts. It does not affect authentication decisions because _note_seen catches write failures and authenticate returns user_info.
Deduplicate in-flight stamps by token_hash. Remove the hash after completion, including failures. Do not add a database-side time predicate without handling its empty result.

Add a test with distinct live and revoked token rows.
_Registry.find returns self.entry for every token_hash, so these authentication tests cannot detect cross-token row reuse. Key the fake rows by token_hash, then assert that a live token remains allowed when another token's row is revoked. Keep the default fixture hash consistent with token_hash_of(_token()).

Skip caching a registry read that overlaps a revoke.
_registry_row caches the row after await find_or_register_seen_token(...) returns. If forget runs during that await, the cache holds a pre-revoke row. Later requests then accept the token until the entry expires, up to 30 s after the lookup began. The revoke handler promises refusal from the next request on this pod.
Record a forget generation before the lookup. Store the entry only if the generation is unchanged.

Update _registry_row to capture the forget generation before awaiting
find_or_register_seen_token and cache the result only if that generation remains
unchanged. Update forget to increment the generation before removing the token
from _registry_cache, so reads overlapping a revoke are not cached.

Bound the optional last-seen write on the authentication path.
_note_seen awaits mark_token_seen inline, and the writer call has no timeout. A slow or blocked primary write therefore delays an authenticated request, even though the stamp is only bookkeeping. Wrap the write in asyncio.wait_for. The existing except Exception already handles the timeout error.

Bound the optional last-seen write in _note_seen by wrapping the await of

bookkeeping cannot indefinitely delay authentication. Preserve the existing

Apply migration 087 before the new code serves traffic.
The registry queries now select columns that only migration 087 adds. Until that migration runs, new pods fail every registry read, so long-lived token authentication returns 503 and token minting fails. Run migration 087 before rolling out this image. Also state this order in the migration header.

Map registry 503 errors to a non-auth close code.
The STT handler sends close code 4401 ("unauthorized") for every HTTPException from get_user_from_websocket, including a 503 when the token registry is unreadable. No test drives a 503 through the stream handler, so the suite passes. Check e.status_code in handlers.py and send a distinct close code for outages. Add a stream test that asserts the outage close code.

…registry, revoke
Builds on 1/4 (the registry and the row at mint). Every long-lived RBAC
token reaching a verifier is now looked up by hash (observe mode):
- rbac_token.authenticate = verify_rbac_token + the registry: a revoked
token is 401; one never seen is registered as 'backfilled' and let
through (that is how the tokens in use get found); an unreadable
registry is 503. Login, launch and signup tokens skip it (no read, no row)
- per-pod read cache of 30 s; last_seen_at / X-Forwarded-For chain / route
written at most every 5 min, never blocking the request
- all seven verify sites go through it: the RBAC dependency, the STT
websocket, feature flags, CRM s2s (both), WooCommerce and Breeze webhooks
- admin-only GET /auth/tokens and POST /auth/tokens/{id}/revoke; revoking
also clears a merchants.s2s_token holding that token, in one statement
- migration 087: revoked_at/by/reason (set together) + last_seen columns
Tests: tests/breeze_buddy/test_token_registry_observe.py (40); CRM auth and
STT tests moved onto authenticate.

Stacked on #1403 (token registry 1/4). Base:
feat/token-registry-1-mint.Why
After 1/4, every new long-lived token is written to
token_registryat mint. But:This PR makes every verifier consult the registry. Old tokens get found by being used (observe mode), and an admin can revoke any registered token.
The stack (now 4 PRs)
backfilled; admin list + revokeusers.tokens_valid_after; deactivating a user or merchant revokes its tokensWhat this PR does
1.

verify_rbac_token(unchanged), then the registry check:jti, lives longer than a login session (max(JWT_ACCESS_TOKEN_EXPIRE_MINUTES, 60 min)), or has noiat. Login, launch and signup tokens skip the check entirely: no read, no row.revoked_at <= now()) → 401, same as any bad token.source = backfilledwith the token's own claims,created_byNULL, and let through. This is observe mode. Six concurrent first uses produce one row (ON CONFLICT DO NOTHING, then a re-read).last_seen_at,last_seen_from,last_routeare written at most every 5 minutes per token.last_seen_fromis the X-Forwarded-For chain as received, or the direct peer when there's none. On the GCP load balancer the caller is the first entry; the existingclient_iphelper takes the last, which is the balancer.last_routeis the route template.2. All seven verify sites go through it

3. Admin-only routes

Rows carry hashes and claims, never a token.POST /auth/tokens/{id}/revokewith{"reason": "..."}. The id is the token'sjti(a uuid).revoked_at/revoked_by/revoke_reasonand clears anymerchants.s2s_tokenthat holds the token. The match is by hash, among the token's own merchants, so the merchant's webhooks and CRM pushes stop with it.merchant_tokens_cleared.require_admin).
