Updated 29 Oct (Swaroop's ask): the registry's kind is now admin | merchant (it was s2s | merchant). admin = a token from POST /auth/s2s/token; merchant = a token from POST /merchant with issue_token. Only the name changed: no behaviour, table or migration-number change. "S2S" below still names the POST /auth/s2s/token route.
Rebased 29 Oct onto releasec81dfb2 (head 3f103372). release took migration 085 (WhatsApp delivery receipts), so this stack's migrations moved up by one (086–089); the numbers in this description are updated, nothing else in the change moved. Re-run on this commit: pytest tests/crm 1647 passed, 15 skipped (as CI) / 1662 passed with the test database (all migrations applied in order to a fresh Postgres) · pytest tests outside tests/crm 3272 passed · pyrefly 0 · black / isort / autoflake clean · check_migrations + check_crm_boundaries OK. The test counts further down are from when the PR was first raised.
Stacked on #1404 (token registry 2/4), which is stacked on #1403 (1/4). Base: feat/token-registry-2-observe.
Why
After 2/4, every long-lived token is checked against the registry, and an admin can revoke one. Three gaps remain:
Rotating a token needs a gap-free switch. Revoking the old token and minting a new one by hand leaves a window in which the service has neither. It can also hand the new token the wrong owner_id: a wildcard-scoped token with no owner_id resolves to unrestricted access (core/security/scope.py:63-66).
Deactivating a user or merchant changes nothing for its tokens. The JWT is never checked against the account. get_active_user even says so: "is_active check would need database lookup. For now, we assume token = active user".
Login tokens can't be revoked at all. They're short-lived and never registered, so there is no "sign this person out everywhere".
The registry check in every verifier; unknown tokens registered as backfilled; admin list + revoke
revoked tokens refused
3/4 (this)
Rotate; deactivation stops tokens; login cut-off
rotation; inactive users and merchants refused; cut-off login tokens refused
4/4
Enforce: unknown tokens and deleted subjects refused (after the observe period + reconcile)
unknown tokens refused
What this PR does
1. POST /auth/tokens/{id}/rotate (admin only)
One statement writes the successor's row (source = minted, created_by = the admin) and points the old row at it: replaced_by, reason rotated, revoked at now() + grace. Until then both tokens work, because revoked is revoked_at <= now(), so a service can switch without a gap.
The successor's claims: the same subject, username, role and scopes, a new jti, and the same lifetime within its door's cap (365 days S2S, 3,650 merchant). A 1,000-day token minted before the caps rotates into 365 days.
owner_id and email are rebuilt the way the mint builds them, because a wildcard token without owner_id would be unrestricted:
S2S: from the user's row today. If that user no longer exists → 409 "mint a new token instead".
Merchant: the original minter (created_by), or the rotating admin for a backfilled row. Its scopes are explicit, so owner_id doesn't widen anything.
Admin-token grace (tokens from the S2S route) defaults to 24 h; 0–168 allowed.
A merchant token switches at once.merchants.s2s_token (its webhook secret) is replaced in the same statement, matched by hash among the token's merchants. Both of its doors (WooCommerce/Breeze HMAC, CRM narrow path) compare against that stored value, so a grace couldn't apply; asking for one is a 422. The route docs say to agree the timing with the merchant first, because their webhook secret changes.
Other answers: 404 unknown id; 409 already revoked or rotating, or lost a race with another revoke or rotate (nothing stored, no token returned).
Response: the new token (shown once), the new row, the old row as rotated, and merchant_tokens_swapped.
2. Every token's subject must be active
Inside authenticate, before the registry, for all RBAC tokens (login, launch, signup, S2S, merchant):
a user subject → users.is_active (NULL reads as inactive, the same as the login check);
merchant:<id> (per-merchant and launch tokens) → merchants.is_active.
Inactive → 401. Unreadable → 503.
A deleted subject is logged and allowed until 4/4, so a service token minted under a since-deleted user isn't cut off unannounced. Rotating such a token gives a 409.
Cached 30 s per subject per pod.PUT /user/{id} and PUT /merchant/{id} drop this pod's cached read whenever is_active changes, in either direction, so a re-activated user isn't left waiting out a cached "inactive".
3. Login cut-off: users.tokens_valid_after
A short-lived token (login, launch, signup) whose user has a cut-off and whose iat is before it → 401. iat is whole seconds, so a login in the same second as the cut-off is refused too (fail closed); the user signs in again a second later.
Stamped:
by deactivation, in the same UPDATE as is_active = false, so re-activating the user doesn't bring old logins back;
by the new admin-only POST /user/{id}/revoke-sessions (404 unknown user).
Long-lived tokens are not cut off by it. They're revoked or rotated one by one, so signing the shared admin out of the dashboard doesn't kill the service tokens it minted. Deactivating the user does stop them (point 2).
4. Migrations
088:token_registry.replaced_by (an FK to the table's own id) plus a CHECK: a replaced row is always revoked or revoking.
Refusing unknown tokens and deleted subjects is 4/4, after the backfill (30 days of RBAC token verified … jti: joined to the load-balancer logs) and the observe period.
PUT /user can't deactivate another admin (its existing rule). S2S tokens always belong to admins, so stopping one through its owner needs a DB update. Revoke or rotate is the normal path.
Deactivating a self-serve merchant's row doesn't stop its users' logins. Their subject is the user, not merchant:<id>. Deactivate the user too. Checking every merchant a token names is a bigger change.
A dashboard request now costs one cached read per user per pod every 30 s. Before this PR, login tokens cost no DB read.
Changes reach other pods within 30 s (the cache window), on every path here: deactivation, cut-off, rotation's end of grace.
Migrations 088/089 may also clash with numbers used by other open PRs. Whichever merges second renumbers.
CI runs only tests/crm. The new tests are run by hand; results below.
an inactive user refuses both login and S2S tokens;
an active user passes after one read;
an inactive merchant refuses merchant and launch tokens;
a missing subject is let through;
an unreadable subject → 503;
one read per window; forget_subject;
NULL is_active reads as inactive.
The cut-off:
issued before → 401;
issued after → passes;
the same second → refused;
long-lived tokens are not cut off.
Deactivation and sessions:
only is_active=false stamps the cut-off in the UPDATE;
both handlers drop the cached read on any is_active change (and not when it's absent);
revoke-sessions is admin-only, 404s an unknown user, stamps and drops the read.
Rotate:
admin only; 404; 409 when revoked or rotating (nothing minted);
the successor keeps identity, scopes and lifetime, gets a new jti, and the S2S owner_id and email;
grace defaults to 24 and an explicit grace is used as given;
the lifetime cap applies;
an S2S token whose user is gone → 409;
a merchant token: grace 0, owner = the minter (the rotating admin when backfilled), no email; asking for a grace → 422;
a lost race → 409;
the old token's cached read is dropped;
the legacy shop role rotates as user;
the statement's guard, delay, link, 'minted', swap and parameters;
the accessor maps both sides;
grace bounds 0–168.
Existing token tests (#1403 / #1404) were updated: the observe fixture now stubs the subject lookups, and the fake row has replaced_by.
Mutation check: 41/41 killed, run on a green suite. Each one breaks one line:
the subject never checked; inactive subjects passing; missing subjects refused; an unreadable subject passing; the subject never cached; forget_subject a no-op;
the merchant or user active flag ignored; merchant subjects read as users; NULL is_active read as active;
the cut-off applied to long-lived tokens, never applied, or compared the wrong way;
deactivation not stamping, or activation stamping too; either handler keeping the cached read;
revoke-sessions open to non-admins, keeping the read, or losing its 404;
rotate open to non-admins; rotating a revoked or rotating token;
a merchant grace accepted, or merchant tokens given one; the merchant owner lost or ignoring the minter;
the S2S owner_id dropped (unrestricted wildcard); the S2S email dropped; the user-gone check dropped;
the default grace lost; the lifetime cap ignored; a successor without a jti; shop not mapped;
a lost race returning a token; rotation keeping the cached read;
the statement ignoring the live guard, revoking at once, not linking the successor, or recording it as backfilled;
the accessor swapping old and new; grace unbounded.
On a throwaway Postgres 17 with the network blocked:
088/089 table rules:replaced_by without a revocation is refused; a replaced_by pointing nowhere fails the FK.
End to end through the real routes: 31/31, 0 rows left.
S2S rotate, 1 h grace: the successor matches on sub, role, scopes, lifetime, owner_id and email, with a new jti. The old row has replaced_by = new, revocation at about +1 h and reason rotated; the new row is minted by the admin, with the hash of the returned token. Both tokens work during the grace. Rotating again → 409.
Grace 0: the old token is refused at once and the new one works.
Merchant: asking for a grace → 422 with nothing written. Rotating → swapped 1, merchants.s2s_token = the new token, the old token refused at once, the new one working, owner = the minter.
PUT /useris_active=false: the cut-off is stamped and the user's login token is refused at once. After re-activation, the old login token stays refused while a fresh login works.
revoke-sessions: the login token is refused, signing in again works, a non-admin gets 403, an unknown user 404. Revoke-sessions on the admin leaves its S2S token working.
An inactive S2S owner (set in the DB): its S2S token is refused, and works again once the owner is active.
PUT /merchantis_active=false: its merchant token is refused.
A deleted user: its S2S token is let through (observe); rotating it → 409 with nothing written.

Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Administrators can rotate access tokens, with a configurable grace period for admin tokens and immediate replacement for merchant tokens. The new token is displayed once.
Administrators can revoke a user’s sessions, invalidating eligible existing tokens.
Bug Fixes
Deactivated accounts and tokens issued before a session-revocation cutoff can no longer authenticate.
The change adds subject-state checks to RBAC authentication, endpoints for revoking user sessions and rotating tokens, and database support for token cutoffs and replacement records. User and merchant activity changes invalidate cached subject state.
Authentication checks user and merchant activity. For short-lived user tokens, it rejects missing issuance times and tokens issued before the user’s cutoff. Subject lookups are cached; lookup failures return 503.
Session revocation and status updates app/api/routers/breeze_buddy/users/..., app/api/routers/breeze_buddy/merchants/handlers.py, app/database/accessor/breeze_buddy/users.py, tests/breeze_buddy/test_token_registry_rotate.py
The user route adds admin-only session revocation. User and merchant activity updates invalidate cached subject state. User deactivation also sets the token cutoff.
The rotation endpoint creates a successor token and returns rotation metadata. The database query records the replacement and swaps matching stored merchant tokens. Admin tokens use a grace period; merchant tokens rotate without one.

Resolve emergency revocation before merging: a rotated token remains usable throughout its grace period even after an administrator tries to revoke it. Also address the bounded cache and clock-skew gaps in session invalidation, and clarify the documented token lifecycle limits.

…ogin cut-off
Builds on 2/4 (the registry check in every verifier, list + revoke).
- POST /auth/tokens/{id}/rotate (admin): one statement writes the
successor (same subject, role, scopes, lifetime within the caps) and
points the old row at it, revoked at now() + grace. An admin token's grace defaults to
24 h (max 168); the owner_id/email are re-read from the user, as the mint
does, so a wildcard token can't rotate into unrestricted access. A
merchant token switches at once: merchants.s2s_token is replaced in the
same statement
- every token's subject must be active: a user (users.is_active) or
merchant:<id> (merchants.is_active) → 401 when inactive; a deleted
subject is logged and allowed until 4/4; read cached 30 s per pod
- login cut-off users.tokens_valid_after: short-lived tokens issued before
it are refused. Stamped on deactivation and by the new admin-only
POST /user/{id}/revoke-sessions; admin tokens are not cut off by it
- migrations 088 (token_registry.replaced_by) and 089
(users.tokens_valid_after)
Tests: tests/breeze_buddy/test_token_registry_rotate.py (48).
The handler renews a registered token whose expires_at has passed, as long as revoked_at is NULL. The new token gets a fresh lifetime. The docstring says the endpoint rotates a "live" token, and the 409 check does not cover expiry. Return 409 for expired rows, or change the docstring to match the behavior.

Add an action description to the admin check in rotate_token_handler, or document the exception to the admin-endpoint guideline.
require_admin makes the same admin-role decision as require_admin_access. Its warning log and 403 detail do not name the action. The guideline requires the action description for admin-only endpoints. Sibling admin handlers in auth/handlers.py also use require_admin, so the convention conflicts with the guideline. Passing a description requires changing a shared helper or importing a domain-specific one.
As per coding guidelines: "Admin-only endpoints: Call require_admin_access(current_user, "action description")" for app/api/**/*.py.

Use the require_admin_access helper, or document why this handler differs.
revoke_user_sessions_handler calls require_admin(current_user) at app/api/routers/breeze_buddy/users/handlers.py:839. The app/api rule names require_admin_access(current_user, "action description") for admin-only endpoints. The gate still enforces the admin check, so the issue is convention drift, not an authorization bypass. The helper named by the rule is defined only in domain-specific modules, so adopting it here would import across domains. No edit is proposed because that import path is not verified as safe.
As per coding guidelines, the app/api/**/*.py rule "Admin-only endpoints: Call require_admin_access(current_user, "action description")" applies to this handler. The repository does not apply this rule uniformly: app/api contains 21 require_admin(current_user) call sites, including app/api/routers/breeze_buddy/auth/handlers.py:490, :513, and :543 in this stack.

Repopulate the subject cache only if no forget ran during the read.
_subject_state captures now before its database await, then writes (now, state) after the await with no version check. A lookup that started before a deactivation can therefore write its old active state after forget_subject has run. The handler has already returned success, and the stale entry admits the subject's tokens on this pod for up to 30 seconds from the read start. Add a per-subject generation or tombstone in forget_subject. Skip the cache write in _subject_state when the generation changed during the await.

Update _subject_state to capture the subject’s generation before its database
await and cache the result only if that generation is unchanged afterward. Have
forget_subject advance the generation for the subject so an in-flight read
cannot repopulate the cache with stale state.

Let emergency revocation cut short a token in its grace period.
revoke_token returns None when revoke_token_query matches no row. The handler then returns 409 for an existing token. A rotated token has a future revoked_at, so the current predicate treats it as already revoked. The verifier accepts that token until the future timestamp.
Match grace-period rows in revoke_token_query and set revoked_at = now(). Keep rotate_token_query's revoked_at IS NULL guard unchanged so a token cannot be rotated twice.
Suggested fix
- WHERE id = $1::uuid AND revoked_at IS NULL+ WHERE id = $1::uuid AND (revoked_at IS NULL OR revoked_at > now())

Update revoke_token_query to match tokens that are not revoked or are still

pyjwt.decode(...) uses PyJWT 2.11.0 defaults, which reject an iat later than the verifier's clock. That does not protect against an issuer and verifier that share a clock ahead of PostgreSQL. In that case, a token issued before revocation can have iat >= tokens_valid_after, pass _check_subject, and remain valid until expiration.
Use one clock source for both timestamps, or add a bounded-skew check that fails closed.

Update _check_subject to account for bounded clock skew when comparing a token’s
iat with tokens_valid_after, rejecting tokens that could have been issued before
revocation despite an ahead-of-PostgreSQL issuer clock. Use a defined skew bound
and fail closed when the check cannot establish validity; keep the database
cutoff timestamps unchanged.

Stacked on #1404 (token registry 2/4), which is stacked on #1403 (1/4). Base:
feat/token-registry-2-observe.Why
After 2/4, every long-lived token is checked against the registry, and an admin can revoke one. Three gaps remain:
owner_id: a wildcard-scoped token with noowner_idresolves to unrestricted access (core/security/scope.py:63-66).get_active_usereven says so: "is_active check would need database lookup. For now, we assume token = active user".The stack

POST /auth/tokens/{id}/rotate(admin only)source = minted,created_by= the admin) and points the old row at it:replaced_by, reasonrotated, revoked at now() + grace. Until then both tokens work, because revoked isrevoked_at <= now(), so a service can switch without a gap.jti, and the same lifetime within its door's cap (365 days S2S, 3,650 merchant). A 1,000-day token minted before the caps rotates into 365 days.owner_idandemailare rebuilt the way the mint builds them, because a wildcard token withoutowner_idwould be unrestricted:created_by), or the rotating admin for a backfilled row. Its scopes are explicit, soowner_iddoesn't widen anything.merchants.s2s_token(its webhook secret) is replaced in the same statement, matched by hash among the token's merchants. Both of its doors (WooCommerce/Breeze HMAC, CRM narrow path) compare against that stored value, so a grace couldn't apply; asking for one is a 422. The route docs say to agree the timing with the merchant first, because their webhook secret changes.merchant_tokens_swapped.2. Every token's subject must be active
