Fifth Wheels & RV Tracking

Complete guide to tracking fifth wheels, RVs, and trailers in MyGarage with specialized features for recreational vehicles.

Overview

MyGarage provides specialized tracking for different types of recreational vehicles:

Why Different Tracking?

  • RVs are motorized - Have engines and odometers, track like regular vehicles. Also have propane systems for heating/cooking
  • Fifth wheels and travel trailers are towed - No odometer; propane and spot rentals instead
  • Trailers are towed - No fuel, no odometer, no propane; service records and documents only

Adding a Fifth Wheel

Step 1: Add Vehicle

  1. Click "Add Vehicle" from dashboard
  2. Select vehicle type: "FifthWheel"
  3. Fill in details:
    • Year (e.g., 2022)
    • Make (e.g., Grand Design, Keystone, Forest River)
    • Model (e.g., Reflection, Montana, Cougar)
    • VIN (if available, may not decode properly)
    • Nickname (e.g., "Home on Wheels", "Weekend Warrior")
  4. Add purchase info and photos
  5. Click "Save Vehicle"

Step 2: Set Up Tracking

After adding, you'll see specialized tabs:

Propane Tracking

Why Propane-Only Tracking?

Both RVs and fifth wheels use propane for appliances, heating, and cooking. Tracking propane separately:

  • ✅ Prevents confusion with vehicle fuel (for RVs with diesel/gas engines)
  • ✅ Accurately tracks propane costs
  • ✅ No mileage required for propane fills
  • ✅ Shows propane spending trends in analytics

Adding Propane Fills

  1. Go to RV or fifth wheel detail page
  2. Click "Propane" tab
  3. Click "Add Propane Fill"
  4. Fill in required fields:
    • Date - When you filled
    • Propane Volume - Gallons or liters, matching your unit preference (e.g., 7.5, 10, 20, 30 gallons)
    • Cost - Total amount paid
  5. Add optional fields:
    • Price per Unit - Auto-calculated from cost ÷ volume
    • Vendor - Where you filled (e.g., "U-Haul", "Tractor Supply", "RV Park")
    • Notes - Any additional details
  6. Click "Save"

Propane Analytics

View propane spending trends in Analytics page (volume and price shown in your unit preference — gallons or liters):

  • Total Spent - Lifetime propane costs
  • Total Volume - Cumulative propane purchased
  • Avg Price per Unit - Average cost over time
  • Monthly Cost Chart - Visualize spending trends
  • Price per Unit Chart - Track price changes

Use Cases:

  • Budget monthly propane costs
  • Find best propane vendors
  • Track seasonal usage patterns (winter = more propane)

Spot Rental Tracking

Track RV park, campground, and storage lot costs with detailed billing entries.

Adding a Spot Rental

  1. Go to vehicle detail page
  2. Click "Spot Rentals" tab
  3. Click "Add Rental"
  4. Fill in rental details:
    • Location Name - RV park name (autocomplete from address book)
    • Address - Auto-fills from address book or enter manually
    • Check-In Date - When you arrived
    • Check-Out Date - When you left (leave blank if ongoing)
    • Amenities - WiFi, Full Hookups, 50amp, Pool, etc.
    • Notes - Any additional details
  5. Click "Save"

Address Book Integration:

  • Start typing location name to search saved RV parks
  • Selecting from address book auto-fills the address
  • After creating new rental, you'll be prompted to save location to address book
  • Future rentals at same location auto-fill from address book

Adding Billing Entries

For ongoing rentals, add multiple billing entries:

  1. Find rental in "Spot Rentals" tab
  2. Click "Add Billing" button on rental card
  3. Fill in billing details:
    • Billing Date - When this bill was due
    • Monthly Rate - Base rent for the period
    • Electric - Electricity charges (if not included)
    • Water - Water charges (if not included)
    • Waste - Sewer/waste charges (if not included)
    • Total - Auto-calculated (monthly + utilities)
    • Notes - Any additional charges or details
  4. Click "Save Billing Entry"

Billing Summary:

  • Total Billed - Sum of all billing entries
  • Billing Periods - Count of entries
  • Monthly Average - Total ÷ billing periods
  • Last Billing - Most recent entry shown by default

Expand/Collapse:

  • Click "View All Billings" to see full history
  • Edit or delete individual billing entries
  • Track utilities separately from base rent

Spot Rental Analytics

View rental spending trends in Analytics page:

  • Total Cost - Lifetime spot rental expenses
  • Billing Count - Number of billing periods
  • Monthly Average - Average cost per period
  • Monthly Trend Chart - Stacked bar chart showing:
    • Monthly rate (blue)
    • Electric (yellow)
    • Water (cyan)
    • Waste (green)

  4. Click "Save"

  • After saving, click "Yes, Save" when prompted

Using Address Book

When adding spot rentals:

  1. Start typing RV park name
  2. Autocomplete shows matching entries (filtered to "RV Park" category)
  3. Select entry from dropdown
  4. Address auto-fills
  5. Continue with check-in/check-out dates

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I track fuel for my fifth wheel?

Fifth wheels are non-motorized and don't have fuel tanks. They're towed by a separate vehicle (truck). Track the tow vehicle's fuel separately, and track fifth wheel propane in the Propane tab.

Can I track my tow vehicle and fifth wheel together?

No - add them as separate vehicles:

  • Tow Vehicle (e.g., Ford F-350) - Track fuel, odometer, service
  • Fifth Wheel (e.g., Grand Design) - Track propane, spot rentals, service

Do I need to enter mileage for fifth wheels?

No - fifth wheels don't have odometers. MyGarage doesn't require mileage for propane or spot rental entries.

Can I track multiple fifth wheels?

Yes - add each fifth wheel as a separate vehicle. MyGarage supports unlimited vehicles.

What if my RV park charges weekly instead of monthly?

Use the billing entries system and enter bills when they're due:

  • Weekly billing: Add 4 billing entries per month
  • Monthly billing: Add 1 billing entry per month
  • Annual billing: Add 1 billing entry per year
