Description

Add an explicitly selected LiteLLM Responses dialect and genuine buffered/streaming recordings, as a separate follow-up to the typed OpenAI Responses integration.

What changes

  • Use small typed metadata mixins with the base Responses models. Recognize six optional response metadata fields (access_programs, billing, frequency_penalty, presence_penalty, store, tool_usage) and the root SSE model annotation as opaque metadata. Some fields are also native OpenAI metadata; their presence does not imply LiteLLM invented them.
  • Bind the extended response projections and event declarations explicitly. Preserve the base request boundary, event selection/roles, text extraction and handwritten protocol hooks. Keep the strict OpenAI endpoint, Chat dialect, shared kernel, transport and application factory unchanged.
  • Export the bound dialect as an inspection-only guard contract and add 41 dialect tests for policy, event coverage, export and fail-closed behavior.
  • Record one actual OpenAI model route through NVIDIA's inference gateway advertising LiteLLM 1.105.1, and replay it offline through the existing HTTP path. Verify inspected text and exact passthrough of the sanitized replay payload/SSE bytes.
  • Reuse the existing Phase D recording sanitizer unchanged: filter credentials and normalize selected metadata, while preserving content, nested identifiers and encrypted state. Add shared-sanitizer content-preservation regressions. No extra Responses redactor or identifier remapping is retained.

Evidence and limitations

The dialect inventory combines the gateway's published OpenAPI document, pinned LiteLLM source and two genuine recordings, rather than inferring a universal schema from recordings alone. The capture uses openai/openai/gpt-5-nano, a benign greeting prompt, foreground execution and store: false. Source/version/provenance details are documented in providers/openai/dialects/litellm/responses.md.

Opaque metadata is not inspected or certified safe; these allowances do not admit new tools, text channels or arbitrary event containers. Unknown root fields and events remain rejected. Nested LiteLLM SSE error envelopes are unsupported and fail closed. Native versus Chat-bridged routes and other backends are not proven equivalent by these recordings. This is explicitly selected behavior, not automatic dialect detection or a claim of universal LiteLLM compatibility.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds an explicit LiteLLM Responses dialect with guarded response and event projections. It derives stream rules from OpenAI Responses definitions and registers a LiteLLM endpoint. Synthetic tests and recorded buffered and streaming interactions validate the dialect and shared cassette sanitization.

Changes: LiteLLM Responses dialect

Layer / File(s) Summary
Response and event projections

Adds LiteLLM response metadata and guarded projections. Event projections inherit OpenAI Responses restrictions. Documentation describes the policy boundaries and clarifies that Chat-specific evidence does not automatically apply.
Stream contract and endpoint
nemoguardrails/server/experimental/providers/openai/dialects/litellm/responses.py, nemoguardrails/server/experimental/providers/openai/dialects/litellm/responses.md
Maps LiteLLM event models into derived stream rules and registers the endpoint with guarded responses and ResponsesStreamHooks. Documentation describes endpoint wiring and recorded schema evidence.
Synthetic policy validation

Adds buffered and streaming capture-and-replay tests and cassettes. Tests check gateway behavior and shared response sanitization. Documentation records the workflow, retained fields, and compatibility limits.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to c18e3

This PR adds an explicitly selected LiteLLM Responses dialect with recorded coverage. No merge-blocking risk remains. A README paragraph should be reordered or reworded so "These six cassettes" is not read as referring to the Responses recordings.

The separately reviewed Responses recordings explicitly select the
[LiteLLM Responses dialect](../../nemoguardrails/server/experimental/providers/openai/dialects/litellm/responses.md).
Refresh only `tests/recorded/server/experimental/openai/test_litellm_responses.py`
with `RECORDED_REQUIRED_KEYS=NVIDIA_INFERENCE_KEY`. Capture stores the complete
sanitized response before checking policy; the subsequent offline replay is the
acceptance gate. Responses uses the same shared sanitizer as Chat, with no extra
content redaction; encrypted content and nested item-ID relationships are retained.
These two cassettes establish neither Chat bridge nor arbitrary-backend compatibility.

📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

The new paragraph makes "These six cassettes" refer to the wrong recordings.

The new paragraph comes before Line 140, which starts with "These six cassettes predate the dialect". Line 140 now follows a paragraph that ends with "These two cassettes". A reader can apply "six cassettes" to the Responses recordings. The six cassettes are the Chat proxy recordings, and their description (provider_specific_fields, choice extensions, two provider errors) is about Chat. Move the Responses paragraph after the Chat inventory paragraph. As an alternative, name the Chat recordings explicitly on Line 140.

RetriggerView in GreptileConfidence Score: 5/5

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable defects were found.

Summary

Adds an explicitly selected LiteLLM Responses dialect without changing the strict OpenAI endpoint.

  • The LiteLLM Responses endpoint accepts gateway metadata while guarding assistant text.
  • Gateway recordings replay through the existing guarded HTTP path.

No actionable issues found. The previous-review checks did not pass, so this review used the full PR diff. No previous review threads were supplied. Tests were not executed.

Keep this as a separate follow-up PR to the typed OpenAI Responses implementation. Its review base is efa77f8; the preceding buffered, streaming and composition commits are not part of this change.

Recognize six reviewed response metadata fields and the SSE model annotation through explicitly bound typed declarations. Reuse request policy, event roles, text selection and lifecycle hooks. Do not change the strict OpenAI endpoint, Chat dialect, shared kernel, transport or application factory.

Capture buffered and streaming evidence for one OpenAI model route through the gateway advertising LiteLLM 1.105.1. Preserve item-ID relationships while redacting credentials and encrypted state. Add policy, export and passthrough regressions plus the generated inspection contract. Bridged backends and nested LiteLLM SSE errors remain outside the supported boundary.

Validation: 298 affected unit/integration tests and 16 offline recorded/helper tests passed. Pre-commit, export drift and cassette privacy checks passed. This commit is kept locally for separate-PR bookkeeping and review; no remote PR or push is included.

Align the LiteLLM Responses recordings with phase-d-final-20261013-d2-recorded. Remove the extra Responses sanitizer rather than redacting encrypted content or remapping nested identifiers. Keep shared credential filtering and metadata normalization unchanged.

Refresh both genuine gateway cassettes with the existing greeting request, preserving response content. Add buffered/SSE regressions for content preservation by the shared sanitizer and update the recording documentation. The removed helper and its tests remain recoverable from e971db1.

Keep the committed mixin-based dialect, runtime bindings and generated contract unchanged. This is a recording-only correction within the separate LiteLLM Responses follow-up PR scope.

Validation: 16 offline recorded/helper tests and 41 dialect tests passed; pre-commit and credential scans passed. Nothing pushed.
