Carries forward storytold#245, vector PDF output (beta gap 14), by @pierrevbc. The author replied on 2026-10-27 that they don't plan to bring it up to date themselves and asked us to go ahead. Their four commits are kept as they are, with their authorship; this branch only adds one merge commit of origin/main (no rebase), so the work credit stays theirs. It supersedes storytold#245; that PR is left open for the maintainers.

What changed since storytold#245

Upstream split the renderer, text layout and engine commands into modules on 10-26 and changed the raster PDF path, so the merge needed more than a textual resolve:

  • crates/render: the Canvas changes (draw_slide, slide_on, shadows and glows rasterized per element, geometry_shape / geometry_art) are ported onto renderer.rs, slide.rs, stroke.rs, text_draw.rs and geometry.rs. Chart pattern fills and the colour-glyph path also go through the canvas now.
  • crates/text: TextLayout::texts is re-added in lib.rs and layout.rs.
  • crates/engine: the vector export parameter is re-added to file.export and pdf_options, next to upstream's rtf and transparentBackground.
  • crates/pdf: upstream's shared backdrops, 64M-pixel cap and plan_pages / build_outline stay for the raster mode (vector: false), and the vector path keeps its font cache. The raster backdrop test now sets vector: false.
  • Docs: upstream's headers and rows taken, the PDF row and the closed-gap entry from PDF export: vector slides with real text; effects rasterize per element storytold/deckcraft#245 kept, parity score regenerated with cargo xtask parity.

Range-diff

The author's last head bff0915b against this branch, git range-diff 9859da39..pr245 origin/main..dc-carry-245:

1: f84c7382 = 1: f84c7382 PDF export: vector slides with real text; effects rasterize per element
2: ffc3d77c = 2: ffc3d77c Progress docs: vector PDF export closes the PDF artwork gap
3: c882f78c = 3: c882f78c PDF export: tests for newer drawing on vector pages
4: bff0915b = 4: bff0915b PDF export: vector pages for the newer bevels, group shadows, tiles and vertical text

All four are identical (=); everything new is in the merge commit 43e36bf5.

What ran

On Linux (WSL2) with CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=2: cargo fmt --check and cargo clippy --all-targets -D warnings on pdf, render, text, engine and mcp are clean. Tests: text 89 of 89, mcp, and the engine pdf test pass; pdf 24 of 26 and render 197 of 198.

The three failures need fonts that this machine lacks (the craft-fonts checkout, so no CJK face): upright_vertical_text_is_outlines_over_invisible_text, unembeddable_font_returns_error_instead_of_a_pdf_missing_text and east_asian_vertical_text_stands_ideographs_upright. I did not run these tests on main to confirm that, so CI is the check. Not run: the full cargo xtask ci, the app build, Windows and macOS (the code is platform independent), and a visual check of an exported PDF in a viewer.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • PDF exports now default to vector artwork and real, extractable text. Shapes, gradients, transparency, tables, charts, and supported pictures can be included in vector output.
    • Effects and patterns that require pixel rendering are rasterized individually at the configured DPI. Set vector: false to export entire slides as raster images, with an optional invisible text layer.
  • Documentation
    • Updated PDF export guidance to explain vector output, which elements are rasterized, and the available export options.
  • Packaging
    • Linux builds can access the network for update checks. The optional control server remains limited to local connections.

pierrevbc and others added 5 commits October 15, 2026 13:04
Each slide was one raster image under an invisible text layer: large files (0.1 to 2 MB a slide at
the default 200 dpi), blurry when zoomed or printed. Slides are now drawn by the same renderer
through a vector canvas, so shapes, outlines (width, dashes, caps, joins, arrowheads), solid and
linear/radial gradient fills, transparency, rotation, flips, groups, tables and charts become PDF
paths and paints, and text is real text in the embedded font subsets (searchable, selectable,
mapped back to Unicode cluster by cluster). JPEG and PNG pictures are embedded as they are (JPEG
stays DCT), others as lossless pixels; crops and picture transparency are kept. Backgrounds
(solid, gradient, picture) are vector too.

What a PDF can't express is rasterized locally, at `dpi`, in place: a shape with an outer or
inner shadow, glow, soft edges or reflection (its geometry and effects; its text stays vector) and
pattern fills. Undecodable pictures (EMF/WMF, SVG) show the placeholder they show on screen.
Glyphs from a variable font's non-default named instance are drawn as outlines over invisible
real text, since the embedded subset is the default instance.

The sample deck goes from 1.04 MB to 0.18 MB, a 21-slide public talk from 10.4 MB to 0.73 MB;
`vector: false` (file.export, MCP export) keeps the raster mode, byte for byte. Links, bookmarks,
notes pages, handouts and hidden-slide handling are unchanged.

- render: `Canvas` trait (canvas.rs) for every drawing call; `vello_cpu`'s RenderContext
  implements it, so on-screen output is unchanged. `draw_slide` draws a slide on any canvas.
  Effects need the pixel context; vector canvases get those shapes through `rasterize`, a
  transparent pixmap covering the shape and its effects. Pictures hand the canvas the original
  file when it is an unchanged JPEG or PNG.
- text: `TextLayout::texts`, each paragraph's characters as laid out (fields filled in), for
  glyph-to-text mapping.
- pdf: krilla canvas (vector.rs) with font and image caches; `PdfOptions::vector` (default
  true); `dpi` now also sets the resolution of local rasters.
- engine, mcp: `vector` export parameter.
- tests: decks generated in code; paths and text without a page image, extractable text, a
  shadow rasterizes only its shape, pattern fills rasterize their area, JPEG embedded byte for
  byte, links and bookmarks in slides and handouts, size against the raster mode; a recording
  canvas checks what reaches a vector canvas; drawing on a pixel canvas matches render_slide.
- gaps.md: "PDF export rasterizes slide artwork" removed (top 14 now).
- file-format-parity.md, parity-checklist.md (Export to PDF: D, summary regenerated),
  architecture.md, roadmap.md (share row and beta item 5 now printing only), ROADMAP.md log.
The vector PDF canvas was rebased on renderer code that draws some
things only on the pixel context: pattern tiles, rectangle and outline
path gradients, blended fill overlays, text shadows and glows, colour
emoji (COLR glyphs) and WMF/EMF pictures. The rebase routes them
through the per-element raster fallback (canvas::pixels, text effects
and colour glyphs rasterized over their area) and draws gradient text
glyph by glyph as vector paths; these tests pin it down.

- render: a recording canvas checks each case: pixels over that element
  only, glyph runs kept for the text around effects and emoji, compound
  outlines as strokes, metafiles as decoded pixels.
- pdf: a vector PDF with a pattern, a path gradient, shadowed text with
  an emoji and a WMF picture exports without panicking, with local
  images and extractable text.
- file-format-parity.md (PDF row) and architecture.md list what
  rasterizes.
…nd vertical text

The renderer now lights 3-D bevels and faces, casts a group's shadow from
its children, tiles pictures with flips, alignment and their recorded
resolution, draws circle gradients from an off-centre focus to the circle
around their tile, and stands East Asian vertical text upright. On a
vector canvas: bevels, lit faces and group shadows are local rasters over
their area (never dropped); tiles are one embedded picture per tile, the
mirrored ones flipped; circle gradients are two-circle PDF gradients;
upright glyphs are outlines over the same text drawn invisibly (still
searchable and copyable); children filled with the group fill keep it
laid out across the group inside a local raster.

- render: tests_vector.rs replays the vector route into pixels and
  compares it with the pixel route on those cases (off-centre, tiled and
  rotWithShape=0 gradients, flipped and aligned tiles, bevel and lit face,
  group shadow, grpFill under a shadow, gradient lines and heads), and
  counts the local rasters.
- pdf: upright vertical text exports as invisible text under outlines;
  horizontal text stays plain text.
Upstream split the renderer, text layout and engine commands into modules, and
changed the raster PDF path (shared backdrops, a pixel cap) and chart text colour.
The vector canvas changes are carried onto the new module layout; the raster
path keeps upstream's backdrop reuse behind `vector: false`.

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review f74c8

The Flatpak builds now share the host network. If the optional control server is enabled, it should be confirmed that other local sandboxed apps cannot drive it without authentication before merging. A minor, pre-existing misalignment of stock chart marks on reversed or forecast axes is also carried into the new vector path.

Security architecture risk: High · up to f74c8

Network access weakens the isolation protecting the optional control interface. When that interface is enabled, another process on the same host may gain control of open presentations and files accessible to the app without authenticating. The listener remains optional and loopback-only; this is not evidence of direct Internet exposure.

Retained concerns

  • High · security · inferred: Default shared-network access removes the sandbox network isolation protecting the opt-in, unauthenticated control listener. Reachable host processes can acquire application automation authority without the previously required network override.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The affected security scope is a Flatpak app instance with its control listener enabled, its open presentations, and app-accessible files. Potential callers are processes able to reach host/shared-network loopback. The inspected binding does not establish direct off-host reachability or unrestricted host access.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The retained finding's path is reachable local process to TCP JSON requests to unauthenticated control dispatch to application commands. Authentication was already absent; the PR worsens exposure by granting the shared-network permission previously requiring an override. Connected automation inherits running-app authority rather than the standalone automation-root restrictions.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Explicit listener startup, loopback binding, request-size limits, queue limits and malformed-request rejection are meaningful controls. They limit activation and resource consumption but do not establish caller identity or method authorization after a connection is accepted.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The unchanged control lifecycle arbitrates pending request execution against abandonment, preventing abandoned queued requests from executing later. An already-started request may continue after timeout, with its outcome reported as uncertain. These lifecycle protections do not mitigate unauthorized callers.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Separate outbound networking from control-channel trust: require authenticated pairing for TCP control, or use a permission-restricted local transport with peer identity. Treat loopback location as reachability, not authorization.

Update two roadmap statements that now contradict the vector PDF change.

This PR updates lines 22, 50 and 122 to say vector PDF has landed. Two unchanged statements still say it has not:

  • Line 90, the M11 row, lists "vector PDF" under open work.
  • Lines 148-149 say the writer consolidation "preserves the current raster-artwork export" and "does not advance vector-PDF". Raster export is now only the vector: false mode.

Remove "vector PDF" from the M11 open list. Reword or delete the closing paragraph.

As per coding guidelines: "Keep ROADMAP.md, the progress docs in docs/ (AGENTS.md §7) and plan/STATUS.md current."

Also applies to: 148-149

Minor · Include the reflection blur in the spill for vector shapes. · renderer.rs:564-573

crates/render/src/renderer.rs:564-573
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Include the reflection blur in the spill for vector shapes.

extent::spill sizes the reflection reach as h + dist. The reflection is then drawn with a Gaussian blur, and the blur tail extends past that reach. For vector output, the reflection is rasterized into area, so the tail is cut at the area edge. The raster canvas has no such cut, so the tail appears there.

For example, with h = 100, dist = 0, blur = 40, start_alpha = 1, and end_pos = 1:

  • The reflection reach is 100. The area ends at 2h + dist = 200 below the shape.
  • The blur sigma is blur * 0.5 = 20. The blurred edge is at y = 200 in slide space, and the content there has opacity of about 0.6 * 1 * 0.08 ≈ 5%. That tail is cut in vector output.
  • The shadow branch already adds fin(sh.blur) to its reach. The reflection branch does not add its blur.

Suggested fix:

Suggested fix
         if let Some(r) = &e.reflection {
-            s = s.max(fin(h) + fin(r.dist));
+            // The blur sigma is `blur * 0.5`; three sigma of blur tail is `1.5 * blur`.
+            s = s.max(fin(h) + fin(r.dist) + fin(r.blur) * 1.5);
         }

This change also widens the slide extent computed by shape_box, which uses the same spill call.

Align stock marks with slot(i).

When cat_reversed or forecast padding shifts the data slots, stock marks do not align with category labels and other slot-based elements. A forward-only forecast on a normal, non-reversed axis does not shift the data slots.

This is pre-existing. The merge base uses the same unslotted expression, so this PR preserves the issue rather than introducing it.

Authenticate the control server before exposing host loopback.

When a user starts DeckCraft with --control, --share=network makes its listener reachable from other network-enabled Flatpaks. The server accepts JSON requests without authentication. Another sandboxed app can use ui.render to read a slide or app.quit to close DeckCraft without confirmation. The HTTP rejection does not block these raw TCP requests. (github.com)

Authenticate control requests, or keep the listener isolated. Apply the fix to both manifests.
