Charts written by DeckCraft had no c:spPr/c:txPr, so PowerPoint drew black gridlines and axis lines and 10 pt labels, while DeckCraft draws light-grey gridlines, no axis line and grey labels scaled to the frame.

The writer now emits:

  • c:majorGridlines/c:minorGridlines with an a:ln in D9D9D9 / F2F2F2 at 0.75 pt
  • a:ln with a:noFill on the axes
  • for new charts (not imported ones kept as-is), the default text colour (tx1 at 65 %) and the frame-scaled label and title sizes in c:txPr and the title runs

Checked

  • cargo test -p deckcraft-pptx: passes, with new tests for the gridline/axis XML and the text defaults.
  • Real PowerPoint (COM, temp copy of the sample deck saved by deckcraft-cli run --sample --save): gridline colour 14277081 (D9D9D9) at 0.75 pt, axis lines not visible, tick labels 16.35 pt in 595959, for the 800x360 pt frame (360/22, DeckCraft's own size). Before, the evidence was black at 0.75 pt and 10 pt.

Not run: macOS and Windows builds of the app, other PowerPoint versions.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Charts now support configurable text size and color, including titles and individual text runs. Charts without explicit settings receive readable defaults based on chart size and theme.
    • Major and minor value-axis gridlines use distinct light-gray shades, and chart axis lines are no longer displayed.
    • The Linux Flatpak version can access the network for update checks.
  • Bug Fixes

    • macOS notarization packaging now retries when stapling or validating notarized apps and disk images fails.

Gridlines are written light grey and axis lines off, and text colour and
sizes are written when a new chart has none, so PowerPoint no longer
falls back to black lines and 10 pt labels.

Walkthrough

Chart export now applies text defaults and serializes font sizes, pie and doughnut label styling, and axis and gridline styling. Flatpak manifests grant network access. macOS notarization packaging retries stapling operations. The workspace version changes to 0.12.0.

Changes: Chart output styling

Layer / File(s) Summary
Chart text defaults and serialization
crates/pptx/src/write/shapes.rs, crates/pptx/src/write.rs, crates/pptx/src/write/chart.rs
Plain charts without raw XML receive missing theme-based text color and frame-scaled text and title sizes. Chart titles, axis titles, and data labels serialize configured sizes. Pie and doughnut data labels use white text when chart text color is not explicit. Tests cover defaults, size conversion, and label styling.
Axis and gridline styling
crates/pptx/src/write/chart.rs
Generated axes omit axis lines. Enabled major and minor value-axis gridlines use solid D9D9D9 and F2F2F2 lines. A test checks the generated XML.

Flatpak network access

Layer / File(s) Summary
Flatpak network permissions
packaging/linux/flatpak/ai.storyteller.deckcraft.bundle.yml, packaging/linux/flatpak/ai.storyteller.deckcraft.yml
Both manifests add network sharing. Their comments describe GitHub update checks and state that the optional control server listens on 127.0.0.1. The non-bundle manifest retains the restriction on home and host filesystem access.

macOS stapler retries

Layer / File(s) Summary
Stapling retry flow
packaging/macos/package.sh
A helper retries stapling and validation up to four times, with waits of 20, 40, and 60 seconds between failures. Notarized app bundles and DMGs use the helper.

Workspace version

Workspace version update

Merge Risk: Moderate · previous review f6db3

This change makes exported charts look more like DeckCraft's own rendering in PowerPoint. A few details still differ: the zero baseline is hidden, bar labels are slightly larger, and reopened pie charts show gray labels instead of white. The Flatpak network permission also needs a decision on whether the control server must be authenticated or isolated before merge.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to f6db3

The Linux packages gain unrestricted networking, which also exposes an explicitly enabled control server to host-local clients. The listener does not authenticate those clients before accepting requests. Loopback binding and explicit server activation limit exposure, but do not preserve the previous sandbox boundary.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: Default host-network sharing removes the separate network override previously needed to expose the optional control server to host clients. When that server is enabled, other host-local processes can submit method requests without authenticating at the transport boundary. The permission is not restricted to GitHub update checks, and loopback binding does not distinguish trusted agents from other local clients. The downstream effects of individual methods remain incompletely traced.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The newly exposed control boundary is per enabled Flatpak application instance and host-local network namespace, not an Internet-wide listener. Potential downstream impact is bounded by the application's effective sandbox permissions, including Documents and portal-granted files; host-root authority or unrestricted filesystem access is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A host-local client able to open a raw TCP connection can submit well-formed method requests to an enabled control listener without presenting client identity. The PR broadens this reachability through the manifest permission, rather than introducing the existing unauthenticated transport. Acceptance into the UI queue is established; specific unauthorized document or filesystem operations were not fully traced.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing server rejects HTTP request lines and closes rejected connections. It also bounds clients, queued requests, line size, and socket/reply waits. These controls constrain protocol confusion and resource retention, but do not authenticate a valid raw-protocol client.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The macOS retry helper repeats the same quoted operation and target and only returns success after stapler succeeds. Exhausted attempts terminate packaging rather than bypassing validation. This establishes local failure handling, not atomic publication or cleanup of every interrupted release output.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Authenticate control clients before accepting UI requests, for example with a per-session capability or a same-user authenticated local transport, rather than treating shared loopback reachability as client authorization.

Keep the zero baseline visible.

The renderer draws a 0.75 pt grey category-axis line at zero. This call hides it in PowerPoint. When gridlines are disabled, charts with positive and negative values lose the visible zero baseline. Write the grey baseline instead of hiding this axis line. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Use the bar-label text size for bar charts.

For bar and column charts, this writes the full text_size for data labels. The renderer uses 90% of that size, so a 16 pt base produces 16 pt labels in PowerPoint instead of 14.4 pt. Pass the chart-group-specific label size here. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Authenticate the control server before sharing the host network.

When a user starts DeckCraft with --control, --share=network makes its loopback port reachable by other local processes. apps/deckcraft/src/control_server.rs accepts JSON requests without authentication, and crates/ui-egui/src/control.rs dispatches methods that inspect and modify the open deck. An untrusted local process can therefore read or change that deck. Rejecting HTTP requests does not block a raw TCP client. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Require authentication for control requests, or retain network isolation when the control server is enabled. Apply the fix to both Flatpak manifests.
