Summary

AGENTS.md says: "Stream or paginate large results. Loading the full result into memory requires explicit opt-in." The Redis driver read each key whole with HGETALL, LRANGE 0 -1, SMEMBERS, ZRANGE 0 -1 WITHSCORES and XRANGE - +, and a scan page pipelined up to 100 such reads. One key with millions of elements blocked the Redis server while it built the reply, and loaded the whole value into iq's memory, with no limit and no opt-in.

Change

  • Size check. For each hash, list, set, sorted set and stream, the driver queues HLEN, LLEN, SCARD, ZCARD or XLEN in the same round trip as the first chunk of the key. A page of small keys still takes two round trips, as before.
  • Limit. A key with more than 1,000,000 elements is refused, unless the read is unbounded:
read key "k": too many elements: the hash has 7 elements and the limit is 6, so read it with --unbounded
The error wraps ErrKeyTooLarge and never holds a value. Strings and ReJSON values have no element count and do not change.
  • Paging. A key is read in chunks of 1000 with HSCAN, SSCAN, ZSCAN, LRANGE and XRANGE … COUNT. The value does not change: sets stay sorted, sorted sets stay in score order, and an element that a cursor returns twice is kept once. A key with more than 1000 elements costs one round trip per further chunk.
  • Opt-in. --unbounded permits a larger key. It reaches the driver through the context (query.WithUnbounded / query.Unbounded). iq diff and iq schema get the flag. The copy and move modes of the root command (--insert, --typed) already had it and now pass it to the driver. The MCP query tool uses its own unbounded input. The MCP schema and insert tools get the refusal.
  • Docs: drivers.md, query-data.md, query-plan.md, sources.md, global-flags.md, and the regenerated man page.

Checks

  • make check
  • make docs
  • Redis container tests (go test ./drivers/redis/...), including the new TestPagedReadOfLargeKeys, which writes 2500 elements of each type to a real Redis and compares the paged read with the whole-key command
  • make man (make completions produced no change)
  • make cover: left to CI
  • make security: left to CI
  • End-to-end tests: left to CI

The refusal tests fail without the change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Redis hashes, lists, sets, sorted sets, and streams are now read in pages of up to 1,000 elements.
    • Reads of these collections above 1,000,000 elements are rejected by default. Use --unbounded to allow them, including with diff and schema.
  • Documentation
    • Updated command help and guides to explain the size limit, paged reads, and where --unbounded applies.

The driver read each key whole with HGETALL, LRANGE 0 -1, SMEMBERS,
ZRANGE 0 -1 and XRANGE - +, and a scan page pipelined up to 100 such
reads. One key with millions of elements blocked the server while it
built the reply and loaded the whole value into memory, with no limit
and no opt-in.

Queue the size of each hash, list, set, sorted set and stream (HLEN,
LLEN, SCARD, ZCARD, XLEN) in the same round trip as its first chunk. A
key with more than 1,000,000 elements is refused with an error that
names the key, its type and its size, unless the read is unbounded.
Read a key in chunks of 1000 with HSCAN, SSCAN, ZSCAN, LRANGE and
XRANGE COUNT. The value does not change: sets stay sorted, sorted sets
stay in score order, and an element that a cursor returns twice is kept
once. A page of small keys still takes two round trips.

--unbounded permits a larger key. It reaches the driver through the
context (query.WithUnbounded). iq diff and iq schema get the flag, and
the copy and move modes pass it on. The MCP query tool uses its own
unbounded input. A container test pages keys of 2500 elements of each
type on a real server.

Walkthrough

Redis collection reads now use bounded pages and reject keys above 1,000,000 elements unless an unbounded-read option is set. The option reaches Redis readers through query contexts and is available in additional commands. Documentation and tests describe the limit and paged commands.

Changes: Redis paged reads

Layer / File(s) Summary
Unbounded context and command wiring

Query contexts now carry an unbounded-read marker. Diff and schema expose --unbounded, and diff, schema, and move use the configured read context. Tests check that the marker reaches driver reads.
Redis paged readers and size limits
drivers/redis/redis.go, drivers/redis/paged.go, drivers/redis/kv.go, drivers/redis/filter.go, drivers/redis/plan.go
Redis collection readers check key sizes and reject reads above the configured limit unless the context is unbounded. Hashes, lists, sets, sorted sets, and streams use chunked reads; strings and RedisJSON retain their existing reader paths.
Paged-read validation

Tests cover size limits, paging, normalization, error handling, context propagation, and integration reads. Query-plan expectations now show per-type paged commands.

CodeScene found two conditions with three parts and two tests with the

unbounded tests are one table test. The behavior does not change.

Unverified finding
Verification ran but could not confirm this finding. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.

Document the MCP behavior of iq_schema and iq_insert.

The paragraph describes the unbounded override only for iq_query. The MCP input types for iq_schema and iq_insert do not expose unbounded, so those tools cannot bypass the Redis element limit. State this explicitly. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Proposed wording
- An MCP query lifts the limit only when the tool call sets `unbounded`.
+ In MCP, `iq_query` lifts the limit only when the tool call sets `unbounded`.
+ `iq_schema` and `iq_insert` do not expose this override, so oversized Redis keys
+ are rejected by those tools.

CodeRabbit noted that COUNT is a hint for HSCAN, SSCAN and ZSCAN, so
Redis can return more or fewer elements. Say that the read sends many
small requests, and drop the claim that a key never blocks the server.

The mutation gate found 13 nil contexts on commands that a read queues
on the pipeline. BatchProcess discards the context of a queued command,
so they are equivalent, as at kv.go:44 and filter.go:91. The two
ParseFloat bit sizes of the score parse are equivalent too. Record them
in the baseline with notes.

The mutation gate found 15 more escaped mutants in the paged reads. Add
tests for the error of the size command, an error in a later chunk, a
bad stream entry ID, the cause of a bad score, the stop of scanAll at
an error, the default limits, and a stream ID above 2^63.

parseStreamID returns a streamID struct and checks both numbers in one
step, so an error return holds no number to mutate. Its errors and the
overflow handling of nextStreamID do not change.
