Summary

The HBase driver reads one row as one record. gohbase merges the partial results of a row back into one, unless the request allows partial results. So a row with millions of cells was loaded whole into memory, with no limit and no opt-in. AGENTS.md asks for an explicit opt-in for that. A driver review after the Redis large-key fix (#216) found it.

Change

  • Every Get and Scan, including get and scan through the MCP iq_exec tool, asks the server for at most 1,000,001 cells per column family with hrpc.MaxResultsPerColumnFamily (sent as StoreLimit). The server cuts the row, so iq never loads the whole row.
  • A row with more than 1,000,000 cells in one column family is refused, unless the read is unbounded:
read row "k1": too many cells: a column family has more than 6 cells, so read it with --unbounded
The error wraps ErrRowTooLarge, names the row key, and never holds a value. It says "more than", because the server stops at the limit.
  • --unbounded permits a larger row. It reaches the driver through the context, as for Redis.
  • A scan that pushes a column test to the server sends no cap: the cap could stop the read of a column family before the server reaches the tested column, and the filter would drop the row without an error. The server returns the whole row, and the read still refuses a row over the limit.
  • The CLI iq exec runs its statement unbounded, as the docs already say that it has no cap. The MCP iq_exec tool keeps the cap.
  • query.MaxValueElements now holds the 1,000,000 for both the Redis and the HBase driver.
  • The limit is per column family, because that is what the server can cut. A row spread over many families can hold more cells in total.
  • Docs: drivers.md, query-data.md, global-flags.md, sources.md, the --unbounded help text, and the regenerated man page.

Checks

  • make check
  • scripts/mutation-gate.sh locally: the only survivors are 6 field clears in the Open struct literal (the lines moved when gofumpt realigned them). Only the container tests reach Open, and the CI shard, which starts HBase, kills them.
  • make man (make completions produced no change)
  • make cover: left to CI
  • make security: left to CI
  • End-to-end tests: left to CI
  • Tests added: TestRowCapRequest (Get, ScanBatches, exec get and exec scan, bounded and unbounded), TestRowCapRequestFiltered, TestRowCapRefusal (at the limit, over it, far over it, unbounded), TestRowCapCountsEachFamily, TestRowCapPushedFilterReadsTheWholeRow, TestRowCapAboveTheServerLimitIsAnError, TestMaxValueElements, and in cmd TestCLIExecIsUnbounded. The refusal and request tests fail without the change.
  • scripts/capabilities.sh: not needed, go.mod and go.sum did not change
  • Docs updated in the same change

The driver read one row as one record, and gohbase merges the partial
results of a row back into one. A row with millions of cells was loaded
whole into memory, with no limit and no opt-in.

Ask the server for at most 1,000,001 cells per column family with
hrpc.MaxResultsPerColumnFamily on every Get and Scan, also for iq exec
get and scan. A row with more than 1,000,000 cells in one column family
is refused with an error that names the row key, unless the read is
unbounded. The server cuts the row at the limit, so iq never loads the
whole row. --unbounded permits a larger row.

query.MaxValueElements now holds the 1,000,000 for both the Redis and
the HBase driver.

gohbase reads one version by default, so an early return of the bare
options could not be told apart from no options. Append the cell cap
only when the read is bounded, and return once.

Walkthrough

HBase reads now limit cells per column family by default and return an error for oversized rows. The --unbounded option permits these reads. Redis uses a shared constant for its existing element limit. Command help and documentation describe the limits.

Oversized HBase rows are now refused, but iq exec get and iq exec scan have no working way to opt back in, contrary to the documentation. Filtered scans can also silently drop rows whose matching column sits beyond the cap. Both should be addressed before merging.

CodeScene found Get at its complexity limit. getRow now reads one row
by key, and Get loops over the keys. A test covers the NewGet error,
which gohbase returns for a cell cap above math.MaxInt32.

CodeRabbit found two gaps. A scan with a pushed column test drops a
row that misses the column, and the cell cap could stop the read of a
column family before the server reaches that column. A row over the
cap was then dropped without an error. Such a scan now sends no cap, so
the server returns the whole row, and readRow still refuses a row over
the limit.

The CLI iq exec had no way to lift the cap. It prints the whole reply
of the statement that the user typed, as the docs say, so it now runs
unbounded. The MCP iq_exec tool keeps the cap.

A test checks that the NewGet error keeps its gohbase cause.
