What and why

A filter plug-in gets 50 million instructions and a minute for each run: the budget of something you wait for. Some filters do heavy but legitimate work, such as ordering a plotter's paths so the pen travels as little as possible, packing shapes onto a sheet or running a simulation. They need minutes, and the app shouldn't freeze while they compute (G17).

  • The manifest asks for it. With "budget": "heavy" each run gets 1 G instructions (20 times a light run's) and 300 s (HEAVY_FUEL, HEAVY_WALL_TIME_MS). Only a filter may ask: a live effect runs whenever the document is drawn, and an exporter already has an export's budget. Hosts from before the key ignore it, so there the filter gets a light budget.
  • Installing asks the user. Install Plug-in… and File › Open of the .wasm say what the filter asks for, and install it on OK. plugin.install refuses it without allowHeavy: true, which an agent passes once the user agreed; the new plugin.inspect returns the entry a module would have, without installing it. The plug-in store keeps the answer across restarts. The Additional Plug-ins Folder skips heavy filters, with a note in its report, since loading a folder asks nobody.
  • It runs in the background. Its dialog has no Preview. OK runs it on a thread of its own, not in the queue of Background Save, so saves don't wait behind it. The status bar shows it and, after a moment, a progress window with Cancel and Continue in Background (the window Background Export uses, now shared). When it is done its output is handed to plugin.run with the same parameters and objects (FilterRun::hand_in), so the edit is still that command: guarded, journaled and undone as one step. If the document or the plug-in changed meanwhile, nothing changes and the status bar says to run it again. On the web, which has no threads, it runs at once.
  • plugin.run from MCP or the control channel runs it where it is called, as it runs any filter. A cancelled run now reports cancelled; nothing was changed rather than a plug-in error.

What a run returns can't add to its budget: the host learns how much output there is only once the run has ended, so a generator that needs more than a light budget asks for a heavy one.

It applies to main on its own: one commit.

How it was tested

Pictures. A heavy test filter in this branch's app. Installing it:

Installing asks first

Its dialog, without Preview:

The dialog of a heavy filter

Running, with Cancel and Continue in Background:

The progress window

After Cancel nothing has changed, and the status bar says so:

The status bar after Cancel

The app ran under Xvfb, driven over --control. CRAFT_UI_HEAVY_FILTER_WASM=<folder> cargo test -p vectorcraft-ui-egui heavy_test_filter_for_pictures writes the filter (order-paths-test-filter.wasm), which computes until it is cancelled.

Tests.

  • crates/plugins/tests/abi.rs: 100 million steps of a loop run out of a light budget and finish with a heavy one; a folder skips a heavy filter. manifest.rs: only a filter may ask, and the key is written back.
  • crates/engine/src/tests_plugins.rs: plugin.inspect, plugin.install with and without allowHeavy, budget in plugin.list; the store keeps a heavy filter's budget; an output handed in is applied once, as one undo step, and only by the same run (not for objects that changed since, nor once the plug-in is installed again); a cancelled run changes nothing.
  • crates/ui-egui/src/tests_plugin_runs.rs: installing asks first (Install Plug-in… and File › Open, where Cancel installs nothing); the dialog has no Preview; a run off the UI thread applies as one undo step; an edit made meanwhile keeps its result out; the progress window, Cancel and Continue in Background.

Docs: docs/plugins.md (heavy filters, the limits, the manifest key and the commands), docs/mcp.md, docs/gaps.md G17 and docs/target-app-parity.md (evidence; scores and hours unchanged). The new interface text and messages have rows in every complete catalog.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm). Every step passed on this branch's head (97d560a): fmt, clippy with -D warnings, cargo test --workspace (9,306 passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored), no-bundled-fonts, pdf-deps, assets, brands, cursors, layers, and wasm (all 23 crates in the wasm set check clean for wasm32-unknown-unknown).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md (no new assets; the pictures are hosted outside the repository).

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds a heavy-budget option for filter plug-ins, approval-gated installation, and background execution on non-wasm targets. The UI tracks progress and supports cancellation or hiding. The engine applies completed output only when the prepared run still matches the installed plug-in and document.

Changes: Heavy-budget filter workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Budget contract and runtime limits
crates/plugins/src/manifest.rs, crates/plugins/src/runtime.rs, crates/plugins/src/registry.rs, crates/plugins/src/wat.rs, crates/plugins/tests/abi.rs, crates/plugins/src/lib.rs, docs/plugins.md, docs/gaps.md, docs/target-app-parity.md, docs/mcp.md
Manifests can declare a heavy budget for filters. The runtime applies heavy fuel and wall-time limits, and folder loading reports and skips heavy-budget plug-ins. Tests and documentation cover these rules.
Engine inspection, installation, and filter output
crates/engine/src/cmd/plugin.rs, crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_plugins.rs
The engine adds plugin.inspect and requires allowHeavy to install heavy filters. FilterRun prepares and executes a filter separately from document edits, then applies matching output in one edit.
UI installation consent
crates/ui-egui/src/io.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/tests_plugin_runs.rs
The UI routes module installation through inspection and requests confirmation for heavy filters. Installation continues with approval; opening a WASM file uses the same installation flow.
Background runs and result application
crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/plugin.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/plugin_runs.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/export_progress.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/menus.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/opening.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/tests_plugin_runs.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/tests.rs
Heavy filters run in the background on non-wasm targets, with progress controls to cancel or hide runs. The UI applies completed output only when the document and plug-in remain current. Web runs execute immediately.

Possibly related issues

Suggested reviewers: bflatastic

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 71fb9

A selection change can waste a completed heavy-filter run, while feature documentation is incomplete and one status date is stale. The issues are bounded but should be corrected or explicitly accepted.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 71fb9

Background results are protected against cancellation and document changes. However, upgrading can give a previously installed filter the larger compute budget without the promised approval. The exposure is limited to local application resources; plug-ins gain no file or network access.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: A module containing budget: heavy can be installed by the base version, which ignores that unknown field and stores the original bytes. After upgrade, attach_plugin_store installs those bytes without traversing the new allowHeavy gate, and Plugin::load grants the larger limits. A subsequent invocation therefore receives increased compute authority without heavy-budget approval. This is introduced exposure through an unchanged loader, not evidence of an actual exploited installation. It requires an already-installed module and a later invocation, and remains subject to sandbox and resource limits.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The supported concern affects compute consumption in the local application after an already-installed filter is invoked. It does not establish cross-tenant access, credential acquisition, or new filesystem/network authority. Native execution remains instruction- and deadline-bounded; web execution remains fuel-bounded.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A module supplier can include budget: heavy in a filter accepted by an older host. That host stores the original bytes while treating the filter as ordinary. Upgrading reloads the same module and enables heavy limits without the new approval step. The path requires prior installation and subsequent execution; startup alone does not execute the filter.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Fresh interactive installation inspects and prompts before supplying allowHeavy. The engine defaults that flag to false, and Additional Plug-ins Folder loading skips heavy filters. Automation is explicitly responsible for obtaining consent before supplying the flag; accepting that documented caller assertion is not independently treated as a vulnerability.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Worker execution does not mutate the document. Cancellation, execution errors, disconnection, and stale identity stop completion before hand-in. Successful results are applied sequentially on the session thread, while cancellation and native deadlines are checked between execution fuel slices.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Persist heavy-budget approval separately from the manifest, bound to the approved module identity. Treat legacy stored modules as lacking that approval and retain ordinary limits or obtain consent before enabling heavy execution.

Use a document-state revision, not Arc identity, for filter freshness.

Session::select increments DocState::revision, so an ordinary selection change can discard a finished filter result even though the captured IDs and insertion parent remain valid.

Do not replace this check with Arc::ptr_eq(&st.doc, ...). Locked-artboard selection handling can update doc.new_art in place while keeping the same st.doc Arc. Track document-state changes separately from selection and view-only changes, and use that token in FilterRun::current. Increment it when selection handling mutates document state in place.

Pin the approved plug-in before confirmation.

For a filesystem path, plugin.inspect reads the current module, but the confirmation stores only that path. When the user selects OK, ui.installPlugin reloads the path and installs its current bytes. If the file changes before approval, the dialog can approve one heavy plug-in and install another. Pass the inspected bytes, or enforce an inspected identity at installation time.

Update the heavy-plug-in confirmation flow around plugin.inspect and
ui.installPlugin so approval is bound to the exact bytes inspected, rather than
only the mutable filesystem path. Pass the inspected bytes through the
confirmation payload or enforce their inspected identity during installation,
ensuring the approved plug-in is the one installed.

no file). A filter whose manifest asks for a heavy budget (minutes rather than a minute, `budget: "heavy"` in its
`plugin.inspect {path | dataBase64}` entry) installs only with `allowHeavy: true`: ask the user first. `plugin.run`
runs it where it is called, so the call may take minutes; `notifications/cancelled` stops it.

Document the --connect limit for heavy plugin.run.

--connect forwards plugin.run to the running app. The app handles the request synchronously on its UI frame, so a heavy filter can block the UI for minutes. notifications/cancelled only drops the connection in this mode; it cannot stop work already started by the app. Recommend the headless server for cancellable heavy filters.

Suggested documentation update

Thanks @KaboomFox. #3720 is merged now, and this one conflicts with it in crates/engine/src/cmd/plugin.rs: FilterRun::prepare here and the documentData context and decode_output/document_data handling there both rework plugin.run. Could you rebase onto current main so a background heavy run also reads _context.documentData and hands its documentData back with its output (applied in the same undo step when the run is handed in)? The rest reads well: only filters may be heavy, the user allows it at install, and Cancel or a changed document drops the result.

Document plug-in invalidation as well as document invalidation.

This summary says that the result is applied unless the document changes. FilterRun::current also rejects output after the installed plug-in changes or is reinstalled. Change this condition to: “unless the document or the plug-in changed meanwhile.”

- **Plug-in parameters as their manifest presents them (G17):** each parameter may have a `label`, a `unit` shown after its value, `help` on its label and a `helpUrl` page opened from a button, a `group` (sections that fold, after the parameters outside any group) and a `visibleWhen` that shows it only while the checkboxes and choices it names have one of the listed values (a hidden parameter still goes to the plug-in). `string` and `numberList` parameters join number, int, bool and choice, and a plug-in declares up to 256 parameters, at most 64 outside groups. The filter, live-effect and exporter dialogs use these keys, and the Appearance panel's effect editor the labels, units, help and conditions; hosts from before them ignore them. Qualify background execution by platform and entry point.

The background thread and progress window apply to non-WASM desktop UI runs. Web runs are immediate, and MCP and control-channel plugin.run calls remain synchronous. Without these qualifiers, this entry documents background execution for surfaces that do not provide it.

Thanks @bflatastic. Rebased onto current main with #3720 in it. A heavy run now carries the document data like any filter run: FilterRun::prepare gives the filter _context.documentData, and FilterRun::finish decodes its output with decode_output and applies its documentData with its objects in the same plugin.run edit, so a run handed in from the background is one undo step for both. New test a_filter_run_made_elsewhere_keeps_its_document_data: the run reads the stored data and hands back new data, the handed-in output is the one applied, and one undo restores the data with the objects.

… (G17)

A filter plug-in gets 50 M instructions and a minute for each run.
Filters that order a plotter's paths, pack shapes or run a simulation
need minutes, and the app shouldn't freeze while they compute.

A filter's manifest may now ask for "budget": "heavy" (Budget): each run
gets HEAVY_FUEL (1 G instructions) and HEAVY_WALL_TIME_MS (300 s). Only a
filter may ask. plugin.install refuses such a filter without allowHeavy:
true, and plugin.inspect returns the entry a module would have without
installing it. Install Plug-in… and File › Open ask the user and install
on OK; the plug-in store keeps the answer, and folder loads skip heavy
filters with a note, since they ask nobody.

The app runs a heavy filter on a thread of its own (plugin_runs), not in
Background Save's queue, with the status bar and a progress window
(Cancel, Continue in Background) that it shares with Background Export
(export_progress::window). FilterRun splits plugin.run: prepared on the
session, run on any thread, its output handed in, and the next
plugin.run with the same params applies that output instead of running
the plug-in again, so the edit stays one guarded, journaled command. A
result whose document or plug-in changed meanwhile is dropped, and the
status bar says to run it again. A cancelled plug-in run is now
EngineError::Cancelled.

What a filter keeps with the document (storytold#3720) goes with the run: it is
given _context.documentData when the run is prepared, and the
documentData of its output is applied with its objects, in the same undo
step, when the run is handed in (FilterRun::finish).

Tests: plugins/tests/abi.rs (100 M loop steps out of a light budget,
within a heavy one; folders skip heavy filters), manifest.rs, engine
tests_plugins.rs (consent, inspect, the store, hand-in, a handed-in
run's document data, cancel) and
ui-egui tests_plugin_runs.rs (installing asks, no Preview, a background
run as one undo step, a stale result kept out, the progress window).
CRAFT_UI_HEAVY_FILTER_WASM=<folder> writes a test filter to try in the
app. Its strings and messages have rows in each complete catalog
(COMPLETE_MESSAGES).
