What and why

On main, File › Place reads and decodes files on the UI thread: the Place dialog runs file.place.info for each
file before it opens, its OK and a drop on the canvas run file.place (the dialog's OK runs file.place.queue when
several files are picked), and each click or drag of the place cursor runs file.place. For 6000 × 6000 px pictures,
a release vectorcraft-cli built from main at e195fc9 spent a median of 1.69 s (LZW TIFF), 0.95 s (TIFF), 0.96 s
(BMP) and 1.60 s (PSD) on the place beyond file.new (five runs each), and file.place.queue of ten copies with
thumbnails took medians of 8.9 to 16.3 s.

On the desktop, the files the user places are now read off the UI thread, one at a time: the Place dialog's OK, a
drop on the canvas, a click or drag of the place cursor, and the PDF, DXF and text import options' OK. OK checks the
params, shows "Placing …" with the spinner and replies {background: true, status}. Each file is then placed as
it would be if it had been read at once, in the order the files were started. A file is not placed while a dialog is
open or a drag is under way. A file whose document was closed meanwhile is not placed, and a Replace whose object was
changed or deleted meanwhile is an error. The dialog's lines are read on a thread of their own and appear when they
are ready. A document opening in the background also waits for a drag to end instead of canceling it. Over MCP,
scripts and the web, file.place, file.place.queue and file.place.info run at once with the same replies.

A temporary test timed the UI thread in a release build on Windows 11 (medians of five runs; "at once" does the work
of main). One file is placed 0.9 to 2.8 s after OK, and the cursor is loaded with ten LZW TIFFs 15.0 s after OK:

6000 × 6000 px Dialog opens: at once / now OK: at once / now Placing the read file
LZW TIFF 1.92 s / under 1 ms 2.53 s / under 1 ms under 1 ms
TIFF 0.58 s / under 1 ms 0.93 s / under 1 ms under 1 ms
BMP 0.62 s / under 1 ms 1.14 s / under 1 ms under 1 ms
PSD 1.15 s / under 1 ms 1.52 s / under 1 ms under 1 ms
ten LZW TIFFs (the cursor) 14.81 s / under 1 ms 15.31 s / under 1 ms 2 ms (loading the cursor)

How it was tested

  • a_file_read_off_the_ui_thread_places_as_one_read_at_once (crates/ui-egui/src/placing.rs): a TIFF, PSD, BMP and
linked PDF and .ai pages leave the document unchanged until read, then match file.place at once.
  • Other tests in placing.rs and opening.rs cover the dialog's OK, drops, the place cursor's clicks and drags, the
order of placing, the one-at-a-time reader, the waits for a dialog or a drag, and MCP's commands staying at once.
  • a_file_read_apart_from_the_session_places_as_file_place_does (crates/engine/src/tests_place.rs) gives
file.place's reply, document and journal entry for each kind of file; five more cover Replace, a resized artboard,
loading the place cursor, its clicks and a linked preview.

Each test except the engine test of loading the place cursor fails when the code it covers is broken: the background
read switched off as on main, or a check, wait or ordering of this change removed.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on top of main at e195fc9:

  • CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 9,350 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored.

git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at 95a495e or with #3686. It conflicts with #3721 in
crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs and opening.rs, where both add a module, an app field and a busy check; the resolution
keeps both.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • File placement from dialogs, canvas drops, and the place cursor can now read files in the background, keeping the interface responsive.
    • Pending placements show status feedback and are applied in order when the document is ready. Placement waits for active dialogs and drags.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Linked images retain their incoming proxy when placed, unless an existing image proxy takes precedence.

📝 Walkthrough

The engine now supports reading Place files and queues outside a session, then applying the results through session handoffs. The desktop UI reads user-initiated files in the background, reports pending work, and delays placement during active interactions. Direct command workflows remain synchronous.

Changes: Background Place workflow

Layer / File(s) Summary
Engine read and placement handoff
crates/engine/src/cmd/place/mod.rs, crates/engine/src/lib.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/mod.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/links.rs, crates/engine/src/tooling.rs, crates/mcp/src/headless.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/canvas.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_place.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_textimport.rs
The engine adds independent file and queue reads, handoff methods, and checks for changed replacement targets and artboards. Cursor placement can return a frontend request. Tests compare deferred and direct placement, including linked-image proxy handling.
Desktop background reader and completion
crates/ui-egui/src/placing.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/lib.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/chrome.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/control.rs
The UI adds a serialized reader and polls completed reads before applying them. Pending work appears in status and ui.inspect. Tests cover read ordering, errors, and placement results.
User placement routes and dialog details
crates/ui-egui/src/place.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/*, crates/ui-egui/src/io.rs, docs/control-protocol.md, docs/target-app-parity.md
User placement paths use background reads when available; direct commands remain synchronous. Place-dialog details load asynchronously and update when ready.
Placement coordination with opening and interactions
crates/ui-egui/src/opening.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/placing.rs
Placement and opening wait while dialogs, interactions, or busy tools are active. Tests cover pending files during selection and Place-cursor drags.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 4416f

Opened or placed files can stay pending, with a busy spinner, while a Dimension measurement is half finished. They proceed once the user completes or cancels it. Limit the busy gate to the Place cursor's own drag before merging; no other merge-blocking problem was found.

Security architecture risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 4416f

Document routing and replacement checks limit unintended edits. However, a later DXF reread does not retain the file-access restrictions captured when placement started, creating a conditional risk of accessing assets outside an automation client’s allowed folders.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The captured filesystem authority covers the initial worker read but is not retained for deferred application. A board-sensitive DXF can trigger a second path read after its target artboard changes, under a later frame’s potentially unrestricted authority. If the source path can be redirected between those reads, the original automation-root restriction may no longer protect the asset read. Exact protocol-level exploitability remains unconfirmed.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified authority-continuity risk concerns restricted desktop automation and path-based deferred rereads. Potential exposure is supported assets readable by the desktop process outside the configured roots, not demonstrated arbitrary-byte disclosure. Headless synchronous placement does not use this deferred completion path.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — A possible attack requires an automation-originated, path-preserving background DXF placement, a target-artboard change before application, and the ability to redirect the permitted source path after the initial read. Application could then reread an outside-root supported asset on an ordinary frame. The authority loss is supported by source, but the complete dialog or cursor attack sequence was not confirmed.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Control requests execute inside automation roots, and worker reads inherit that scope. Later placement polling occurs before control-request draining; frame-wide confinement is conditional on synthetic input. The pending result does not retain the initiating scope for completion.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Reader panics become error results, disconnected channels become explicit completion errors, and pending work is removed before completion handling. These controls contain ordinary worker failures without applying a failed read to a document.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Preserve the initiating filesystem scope through completion and any conditional reread, or retain immutable source bytes so artboard-dependent recalculation cannot reopen a mutable path under different authority.

Do not gate file polling on every Tool::busy() state.

After one plain click, DimensionTool stores a point and reports busy() == true while it waits for the next click. The new gates then leave ready Open and Place files queued with their spinner until the dimension is completed or cancelled.

Keep the PlaceTool drag exception, but let non-drag tool state proceed.
