What and why

A plug-in had nowhere to keep settings that belong to the whole document rather than to one object, such as the pens a plotter holds or a machine profile (G17). It could only ask for them again on every run.

  • Write. A filter's output may hold documentData: any JSON of at most 1 MiB, which replaces what the plug-in keeps with the document (null removes it), in the same undo step as its objects. Too much is refused, and the document stays as it was.
  • Read. A filter gets it back in _context.documentData (null until it keeps something). A filter reads and writes only its own.
  • Kept. It's the document's foreign data: Document::unknown["pluginData"], by plug-in id, where the perspective grid and the brushes already keep theirs. The document model and the native format don't change, and hosts from before this keep it when they save. An exporter is given the whole document, so it can read every plug-in's data, not only its own. Nothing in the UI lists it, as the reference app's Document Info lists no plug-in data.

A live effect isn't given it: its geometry is worked out from the object alone wherever it's drawn.

This follows the reference app, whose plug-ins reach a document dictionary through the SDK that is saved in the .ai file and isn't listed in Document Info (forum example).

It replaces #3176, whose first version added a plugin_data section to the native file and a Plug-in Data category to Document Info, both product decisions; this version needs neither. One commit on main.

How it was tested

Tests. crates/doc/src/plugin_data.rs: each plug-in has its own entry, forgetting what isn't kept copies nothing, and a damaged value holds nothing. crates/plugins/src/objects/tests.rs: documentData is kept, forgotten (null) or, over 1 MiB, refused. crates/engine/src/tests_plugins.rs: a filter writes its data in one undo step with its objects and reads it back, another filter isn't given it, the native file keeps it among the document's foreign data, more than 1 MiB is refused with the document unchanged, and null removes it. crates/engine/tests/plugin_export.rs: an exporter finds another plug-in's data in the document it is given.

No UI changes, so no pictures.

Docs: docs/plugins.md (context, output and where the data lives), docs/gaps.md G17 and docs/target-app-parity.md (evidence; scores and hours unchanged). The new error message has a row in every complete catalog.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm). Every step passed on this branch's head (012b177)
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md (no new assets).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Plug-in filters can now save data with a document and access it on later runs. Each filter’s data stays separate, is included when the document is exported, and can be removed by the filter.
    • Saved data changes are grouped with the filter’s document edits for undo and redo. Data larger than 1 MiB is rejected.

📝 Walkthrough

Filters can read and update data stored with a document under their plug-in ID. The engine applies this data with filter object changes, enforces a 1 MiB serialized JSON limit, and makes stored data available in exported documents.

Changes: Filter plug-in document data

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document data storage
crates/doc/src/lib.rs, crates/doc/src/plugin_data.rs
The document crate exposes per-plug-in accessors for data in Document::unknown. Setting data initializes or replaces the plug-in mapping. Forgetting an entry removes the mapping when it becomes empty. Tests cover these cases and preservation of unrelated data.
Filter output decoding
crates/plugins/src/objects.rs, crates/plugins/src/objects/tests.rs
Filter output decoding now returns objects and optional documentData. It distinguishes missing data from null and rejects serialized data larger than 1 MiB.
Filter execution and document persistence
crates/engine/src/cmd/plugin.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_plugins.rs, crates/engine/tests/plugin_export.rs, docs/plugins.md
The engine supplies stored data in the filter context and saves returned data with object changes. Tests cover undo/redo, data-size rejection, removal, and exporter access. The documentation describes the data format and access rules.

Possibly related issues

  • storytold/photocraft issue 8277: The PR adds per-document, plug-in-namespaced data storage, persistence, and a size limit for filter plug-ins. It does not implement the full ABI v2 scope.

Suggested reviewers: bflatastic

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 83bdd

A filter cannot save document data when no objects are selected. This is a bounded workflow gap, but it should be fixed before relying on data-only filter output.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 83bdd

Filter writes are size-limited, scoped to the running plug-in, and committed with object edits. No new file or network access is granted. Retained data travels with saved documents and is readable by exporters, so it is not confidential plug-in storage.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The introduced write authority is one manifest-ID entry in the active document. Retention also makes that data portable with the document and available to exporters, extending its lifecycle beyond the initiating filter run.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The engine constructs _context after resolving parameters and uses the resolved manifest ID for both lookup and commit. Returned documentData cannot select another storage key. The added isolation test checks that a second filter receives null instead of the first filter's value.
  • observed — The existing runtime rejects host imports, bounds linear memory and combined input/parameter size, and checks returned output length before copying it. This runtime is unchanged by the PR; retained data passes through the same execution boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Replacement and removal affect the addressed plug-in entry, and removing the final entry removes the container. Forgetting an absent entry avoids copying shared foreign data. These operations preserve unrelated plug-in entries.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Plug-in authors should keep credentials out of documentData and validate reloaded values as document-controlled input. This is usage guidance for portable foreign data, not an observed host vulnerability.

Commit data-only filter output when no objects are selected.

When plugin.run receives {"objects":[],"documentData":...} with no input objects, objects::apply_output returns the objects to change are no longer in the document before d.set_plugin_data runs. The filter cannot save document-level data in this reachable no-selection workflow. Skip object application only when both the input and output object lists are empty and documentData is present. Preserve the existing contract that an empty output deletes nonempty inputs.

A filter plug-in had nowhere to keep settings that belong to the whole
document rather than to one object, such as the pens a plotter holds or
a machine profile: it could only ask for them again on every run.

- A filter's output may hold documentData: any JSON of at most 1 MiB
(objects::MAX_DOCUMENT_DATA) that replaces what the plug-in keeps with
the document, null removing it, in the same undo step as its objects
(objects::decode_output). Too much refuses the output and the
  document stays as it was.
- A filter gets it back in _context.documentData (null until it keeps
something). A filter reads and writes only its own.
- It is the document's foreign data, Document::unknown["pluginData"] by
plug-in id (vectorcraft_doc::plugin_data), where the perspective grid
and the brushes keep theirs. So the native file needs no section of
its own for it, and hosts from before keep it when they save. An
exporter is given the whole document, so it can read every
plug-in's. Nothing else lists it, as the reference app's Document
  Info lists no plug-in data.

A live effect isn't given it: its geometry is worked out from the
object alone wherever it is drawn.

Tests: plugin_data.rs (each plug-in its own entry, forgetting what isn't
kept copies nothing, a damaged value holds nothing), objects/tests.rs
(kept, forgotten, refused over the limit), tests_plugins.rs (one undo
step with the objects, read back, not given to another filter, kept by
the native file among its foreign data, refused over the limit with the
document unchanged, null removes it) and tests/plugin_export.rs (an
exporter finds another plug-in's). The size error has its row in each complete
catalog (COMPLETE_MESSAGES).

A filter plug-in gets 50 M instructions and a minute for each run.
Filters that order a plotter's paths, pack shapes or run a simulation
need minutes, and the app shouldn't freeze while they compute.

A filter's manifest may now ask for "budget": "heavy" (Budget): each run
gets HEAVY_FUEL (1 G instructions) and HEAVY_WALL_TIME_MS (300 s). Only a
filter may ask. plugin.install refuses such a filter without allowHeavy:
true, and plugin.inspect returns the entry a module would have without
installing it. Install Plug-in… and File › Open ask the user and install
on OK; the plug-in store keeps the answer, and folder loads skip heavy
filters with a note, since they ask nobody.

The app runs a heavy filter on a thread of its own (plugin_runs), not in
Background Save's queue, with the status bar and a progress window
(Cancel, Continue in Background) that it shares with Background Export
(export_progress::window). FilterRun splits plugin.run: prepared on the
session, run on any thread, its output handed in, and the next
plugin.run with the same params applies that output instead of running
the plug-in again, so the edit stays one guarded, journaled command. A
result whose document or plug-in changed meanwhile is dropped, and the
status bar says to run it again. A cancelled plug-in run is now
EngineError::Cancelled.

What a filter keeps with the document (storytold#3720) goes with the run: it is
given _context.documentData when the run is prepared, and the
documentData of its output is applied with its objects, in the same undo
step, when the run is handed in (FilterRun::finish).

Tests: plugins/tests/abi.rs (100 M loop steps out of a light budget,
within a heavy one; folders skip heavy filters), manifest.rs, engine
tests_plugins.rs (consent, inspect, the store, hand-in, a handed-in
run's document data, cancel) and
ui-egui tests_plugin_runs.rs (installing asks, no Preview, a background
run as one undo step, a stale result kept out, the progress window).
CRAFT_UI_HEAVY_FILTER_WASM=<folder> writes a test filter to try in the
app. Its strings and messages have rows in each complete catalog
(COMPLETE_MESSAGES).

gets HEAVY_FUEL (1 G instructions) and HEAVY_WALL_TIME_MS (300 s). Only a
filter may ask. plugin.install refuses such a filter without allowHeavy:
true, and plugin.inspect returns the entry a module would have without
installing it.

A cancelled plug-in run is now
EngineError::Cancelled.

(COMPLETE_MESSAGES).

need minutes, and the app shouldn't freeze while they compute.
