What and why

A plug-in had nowhere to keep settings that belong to the whole document rather than to one object, such as the pens a plotter holds or a machine profile (G17). It could only ask for them again on every run.

  • Write. A filter's output may hold documentData: any JSON of at most 1 MiB, which replaces what the plug-in keeps with the document (null removes it), in the same undo step as its objects. Too much is refused, and the document stays as it was.
  • Read. A filter gets it back in _context.documentData (null until it keeps something). A plug-in reads and writes only its own.
  • Kept. It's the document's foreign data: Document::unknown["pluginData"], by plug-in id, where the perspective grid and the brushes already keep theirs. The document model and the native format don't change, hosts from before this keep it when they save, and an exporter finds it in the document it is given. Nothing in the UI lists it, as the reference app's Document Info lists no plug-in data.

A live effect isn't given it: its geometry is worked out from the object alone wherever it's drawn.

This replaces the first version of this PR, which added a plugin_data section to the native file and a Plug-in Data category to Document Info, both product decisions. It's one commit on main.

How it was tested

Tests. crates/doc/src/plugin_data.rs: each plug-in has its own entry, forgetting what isn't kept copies nothing, and a damaged value holds nothing. crates/plugins/src/objects/tests.rs: documentData is kept, forgotten (null) or, over 1 MiB, refused. crates/engine/src/tests_plugins.rs: a filter writes its data in one undo step with its objects and reads it back, another plug-in isn't given it, the native file keeps it among the document's foreign data, more than 1 MiB is refused with the document unchanged, and null removes it. crates/engine/tests/plugin_export.rs: an exporter finds it in the document it is given.

No UI changes, so no pictures.

Docs: docs/plugins.md (context, output and where the data lives), docs/gaps.md G17 and docs/target-app-parity.md (evidence; scores and hours unchanged). The new error message has a row in every complete catalog.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or

  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md (no new assets).

    • Stored data is preserved across save and load, and is available to exporters.
    • Plug-ins can update or clear their stored data alongside document changes in the same undo step.
    • Data exceeding the size limit is rejected without modifying the document.
  • Documentation
    • Added guidance on plug-in document data, including access, size limits, persistence, and exporter availability.

📝 Walkthrough

Filter plug-ins can read and update plug-in-specific document data. The engine stores returned data with object changes, serializes it as foreign data, and includes it in exporter input.

Changes: Filter plug-in document data

Layer / File(s) Summary
Document data storage and output decoding
crates/doc/src/lib.rs, crates/doc/src/plugin_data.rs, crates/plugins/src/objects.rs, crates/plugins/src/objects/tests.rs
The document API reads, replaces, and removes data by plug-in ID. Output decoding distinguishes absent data from null, accepts data up to 1 MiB, and retains the existing object decoding flow. Tests cover storage behavior and output decoding.
Filter execution, persistence, and exporter access
crates/engine/src/cmd/plugin.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_plugins.rs, crates/engine/tests/plugin_export.rs, docs/gaps.md, docs/plugins.md, docs/target-app-parity.md
Filter runs provide stored data in _context.documentData and apply returned data with object changes. Tests cover undo/redo, isolation, native serialization, removal, size rejection, and exporter input. Documentation describes the behavior.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 012b1

A localized cleanup issue may leave unnecessary foreign-data structure in saved documents.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 012b1

The change introduces document-scoped storage with bounded writes and explicit sharing rules. Filters access their own entries, while exporters intentionally receive all retained data. Combined object and data updates preserve rollback and undo behavior. No material security defect was identified in the reviewed paths.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The new state affects the invoking plug-in's entry in a document, that document's history and saved representation, and exporters receiving that document. The entry is not a secret store isolated from whole-document consumers.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Plug-in-controlled output cannot choose another entry's storage key through documentData: the engine supplies the manifest ID independently. Invalid output and oversized replacement values fail before mutation. These controls bound this write path, not every possible native-document input.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Malformed non-object pluginData containers yield no entry on lookup. Forgetting an absent entry preserves existing foreign data; storing a value replaces a malformed container with a valid map. Transactional rollback contains ordinary edit failures.

Thanks @KaboomFox. #3174 is merged, so this one's diff is now just the document data. I'm holding it for the project owner rather than landing it in the parity batches: it adds a section to the native file format (plugin_data) and a Plug-in Data category to Document Info, which the reference app's Document Info doesn't have, and both are product decisions. The code itself (size cap, one undo step, per-plug-in isolation) reads well.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Limit the isolation claim to filters.

A filter reads and writes only its own entry. An exporter receives the document JSON, including entries from other plug-ins. The statement that “A plug-in reads and writes only its own data” therefore gives authors an incorrect expectation about who can read stored data. State explicitly that exporters can read all plugin_data entries.

Thanks @bflatastic. I’ve reshaped it so it needs neither of those decisions:

No new section in the native file. What a plug-in keeps is the document’s foreign data, unknown["pluginData"] by plug-in id, where the perspective grid and the brushes already keep theirs. The document model and the format don’t change, and versions from before this keep the data when they save.

No Document Info category. Nothing in the UI lists it.

A filter plug-in had nowhere to keep settings that belong to the whole
document rather than to one object, such as the pens a plotter holds or
a machine profile: it could only ask for them again on every run.

- A filter's output may hold documentData: any JSON of at most 1 MiB
(objects::MAX_DOCUMENT_DATA) that replaces what the plug-in keeps with
the document, null removing it, in the same undo step as its objects
(objects::decode_output). Too much refuses the output and the
  document stays as it was.
- A filter gets it back in _context.documentData (null until it keeps
something). A filter reads and writes only its own.
- It is the document's foreign data, Document::unknown["pluginData"] by
plug-in id (vectorcraft_doc::plugin_data), where the perspective grid
and the brushes keep theirs. So the native file needs no section of
its own for it, and hosts from before keep it when they save. An
exporter is given the whole document, so it can read every
plug-in's. Nothing else lists it, as the reference app's Document
  Info lists no plug-in data.

A live effect isn't given it: its geometry is worked out from the
object alone wherever it is drawn.

Tests: plugin_data.rs (each plug-in its own entry, forgetting what isn't
kept copies nothing, a damaged value holds nothing), objects/tests.rs
(kept, forgotten, refused over the limit), tests_plugins.rs (one undo
step with the objects, read back, not given to another filter, kept by
the native file among its foreign data, refused over the limit with the
document unchanged, null removes it) and tests/plugin_export.rs (an
exporter finds another plug-in's). The size error has its row in each complete
catalog (COMPLETE_MESSAGES).

🟡 Minor · Remove an empty pluginData map during null cleanup. · plugin_data.rs:26-38

crates/doc/src/plugin_data.rs:26-38
🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Remove an empty pluginData map during null cleanup.

When a loaded document contains unknown["pluginData"] = {}, a filter that returns documentData: null reaches set_plugin_data(id, None). The current early return leaves the empty pluginData key in the saved document, despite the accessor contract requiring removal when no plug-in keeps data.

Suggested fix
