Fixes #2170

Root cause: recolor.apply always converted a new colour into the model of the colour it replaces (RowMap::map -> keep_model). In a CMYK document whose art is RGB, mapping an RGB black to {c:0,m:0,y:0,k:1} therefore stayed RGB and displayed as a lighter grey, with no way to ask otherwise and no hint why.

Change:

  • New optional model param on recolor.apply: "keep" (default, unchanged), "new" (art takes the new colour's own model, so CMYK replacing RGB gives CMYK art), "document" (new colours are converted to the document's colour mode first). An unknown value is an error.
  • The issue's alternative: when a colour keeps a model other than its new colour's, the result carries a note explaining it and naming the model option (RowMap::converts).
  • Recolor Artwork dialog: new "Color Model:" dropdown (Keep / New Color's / Document's) in the Assign tab's options, sent as model; with Preview on, a dim hint under the tab shows when the preview result has a note. Strings added to all 19 language files. Placed in the options grid of the Assign tab, away from the Edit tab code that Recolor Artwork: dragging a wheel handle of CMYK art keeps the linked handles in place #2454 changes.

Tests (both fail with RowMap::converts disabled): tests_recolor::model_param_chooses_the_model_of_the_new_colour (engine: model values and the note), tests_recolor::the_color_model_choice_reaches_the_recolour_and_a_kept_model_is_noted (ui-egui: dialog field reaches the command, hint shows and clears, OK gives CMYK art). Ran scoped lib tests for engine recolor, color, ui-egui recolor and i18n, clippy -D warnings --lib --tests and fmt on color, engine and ui-egui, cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask wasm.

Rebased onto current main; git applied both commits without textual conflicts. A follow-up commit adds the new labels to the nl, da and id catalogs that landed on main (translations worth a native review). Checks run locally: cargo fmt --check; cargo check --workspace --all-targets; cargo test -p vectorcraft-ui-egui --lib -- i18n::. All passed. Full suite left to CI.

📝 Walkthrough

recolor.apply now accepts a model option to preserve source color models, use replacement color models, or convert colors to the document model. The response can include a conversion note. The change also updates recolor tests and documentation, and adjusts a ruby alignment test to use line advances.

Changes: Recolor model selection

Layer / File(s) Summary
Color mapping model behavior
crates/color/src/recolor.rs
RowMap now supports using the target color model or preserving the source model. The Hue Shift test covers both modes.
Engine model selection and reporting
crates/engine/src/cmd/recolor.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_recolor.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/dialogs/recolor.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/i18n/untranslated_messages.txt, docs/mcp.md, docs/roadmap.md, docs/target-app-parity.md
recolor.apply supports keep, new, and document. Invalid values fail validation. Document mode converts replacement and group colors. A response note is returned when mapped colors retain a different model from their replacements. Tests and documentation cover these behaviors and the unchanged dialog parameters.

Ruby alignment test

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 52059

The model-selection change is ready for normal checks, but the parity document should cite its regression tests before merge.

Security architecture risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 52059

The new option changes color representation without expanding edit permissions. Existing defaults and transactional undo behavior remain intact. No material security regression was identified in the reviewed change.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The changed policy operates within existing active-document recolor authority: selected artwork, optional named color groups, library-swatch additions, and dependent color references. It does not introduce another target document, credential, file destination, or service operation. Group and swatch dependencies mean the affected scope should not be characterized as selected pixels alone.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Caller-controlled model input passes through explicit type and value validation before mutation. Command dispatch retains its existing enablement checks and requires mutable Session access. These establish local command preconditions and exclusive access in safe Rust; they do not establish how production callers are authenticated.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The existing preview mechanism resets document and selection to the interaction snapshot before each application. A failed preview clears the committable preview, preventing an earlier successful result from being committed accidentally. Commit and cancellation retain the existing interaction machinery; the new policy adds no asynchronous reservation or cross-command conversion state.

Explanation

Issue #2170 requires a way to avoid unwanted colour-model preservation or a warning. recolor.apply at the reviewed head accepts model values keep, new, and document; keep remains the default and invalid values fail. RowMap::converts detects model conversion, and the command returns a note that names the model option. Engine tests cover model selection, document conversion, invalid input, and the note. The issue does not require a dialog control.

Docstring coverage is 80.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 25 functions across 6 files. (4 skipped: 4 unsupported.)

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The change to crates/text/src/tests_ruby.rs changes ruby alignment bounds and tolerances. This change has no demonstrated connection to recolour model selection or issue #2170. The recolour implementation, tests, and related MCP documentation are within scope.

Thanks @vangel76. The engine/MCP model option for recolor.apply is useful, but Illustrator's Recolor Artwork has no Color Model dropdown (its mode menu only switches the editing sliders). If you'd like the option to land, please drop the dialog dropdown and its hint and keep the parameter for scripts and MCP only.

cargo xtask ci is incomplete or unchecked on this PR. Run it end to end (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm), tick the checklist when green, and reply here with the outcome. That is required before any approve from here.

Read the source at 89c4efa; I found no defect. model is validated before anything is edited (a non-string or unknown value is an error), keep stays the default so existing callers behave as before, new uses RowMap::with_own_model, and document converts both the row colours and the group colours. The hue-shift branch puts the shifted colour into the new colour's model too, and the "kept a different model" note is raised only from the paths that actually convert. The dialog sends a valid value, shows the note only while the preview is on, and a new colour group follows document only. Engine and dialog tests cover each choice, the junk values and the group case. FreeBSD x86_64 build and test is green at this head.

Removed the Color Model dropdown and its hint from the Recolor Artwork dialog; the model option of recolor.apply stays for scripts and MCP only, and the docs say so. Merged the current main (one docs conflict in target-app-parity.md, kept both sides). Locally: cargo check --workspace --all-targets, the recolor tests of the color, engine and ui-egui crates, and the i18n tests pass. I have not yet run cargo xtask ci end to end.

Thanks @vangel76, merged as one squashed commit: recolor.apply takes model (keep, new or document) for scripts and MCP, and the dialog is unchanged. Checked live: model: "new" recolours an RGB orange to the CMYK target, and a non-string model is refused.

@Messhias I've contributed a lot to the ctraft apps so far. About 1000 merged PRs so far. What is this requests for all that expensive tests? Don't be dicks you are about to drive this whole project against a wall, looking at the very few merges you done last days. I have so many unmerged PR and have to fix healthy and mergeable ones again and again. I don't think I will continue supporting this project if I have to pay more and more with time, tokens, energy bill for repeated fixes and excessive tests introduced on a daily basis. It's open source goddammit, not squeeze contributors to fuel your own megalomania. Do your work and don't be a blocker all day long.

Merged current main into the branch (clean, no conflicts) and ran cargo xtask ci end to end: all 10 steps passed. fmt ok, clippy ok, tests ok, no-bundled-fonts ok, pdf-deps ok, assets ok, brands ok, cursors ok, layers ok, wasm ok. No code changes were needed. Pushed as a4c2134.

The area table in docs/target-app-parity.md had several copies of the
Colour and of the Path operations rows (merge leftovers), with
contradicting gap lists. Each is now one row: the Colour row lists the
30.0 gradient additions (dither, perceptual blending, presets) as done
and keeps every evidence item (storytold#2520, storytold#1253, storytold#1251, storytold#3416); the Path row
takes the newest gap wording and the union of the copies' evidence,
including the Shape Builder edge-source grid test and storytold#2526, storytold#4522.

recolor.apply keeps the colour model of the replaced colour, so a CMYK replacement on RGB artwork looks like a failed recolour
