What and why

People reuse the same gradients across documents and today rebuild them by hand each time. docs/gaps.md G13 lists gradient presets as missing. This adds them to the Gradient panel:

  • Presets menu (a row under the stroke buttons): the presets of the app's own built-in gradient libraries, grouped by library (theme), then the saved ones. Choosing one gives the gradient behind the active proxy (or a solid paint) the preset's type, stops, method and dither, keeping its placement (angle, aspect, origin), as one undo step. It goes through paint.editGradient, so fills, strokes, type runs and the default paint follow that command's rules. The menu shows the preset the current gradient is.
  • Panel menu: Save Gradient Preset… (named in a dialog; unique names, not a built-in's), Delete Gradient Preset (saved ones only), and Hide/Show Presets.
  • Storage: saved presets are kept with the preferences, next to the other user preset lists (width profiles, flattener, perspective), so they're available in every document. Stops linked to a document swatch keep their colour, unlinked, since a preset is used in other documents.
  • Commands: gradient.presets.list, .apply, .save, .delete (all panel actions go through them).
  • The built-in presets are the app's existing computed gradient libraries (vectorcraft_color::libraries); no new preset art. The menu's rows are drawn only while in view, as its headings are.

New UI strings (Presets:, Saved, Save Gradient Preset…, Delete Gradient Preset, Hide/Show Presets) show up in the i18n report for translators. Docs: gaps G13, docs/target-app-parity.md, docs/ui-parity.md and the ROADMAP progress log.

How it was tested

  • Engine (tests/gradpresets.rs): list order and unique names; apply to a fill and to a stroke keeps the placement and is one undo step; save (default and given names, duplicates refused, swatch-linked stops unlinked); delete (saved only, built-ins refused).
  • Panel (panels/gradient/tests.rs): applying a preset from the Presets menu (fill and stroke proxies, placement kept, one undo step, the menu then shows the preset); saving from the panel menu, the saved preset under its heading after scrolling the menu, deleting it, and hiding/showing the row.
  • cargo xtask ci locally on macOS: fmt passes; clippy stops on the existing TEXT_ONLY dead-code error in apps/vectorcraft/src/clipboard.rs (Wayland-only uses, same on main on macOS; this PR doesn't touch the app), so I ran clippy -D warnings on vectorcraft-engine and vectorcraft-ui-egui (clean), their tests (all pass except two variable-font tests that fail on main here too), and brands, assets, i18n-report, layers, wasm (pass).

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm). See above: everything I could run passes; the two exceptions also fail on main on macOS.
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user.
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from other products or GPL/AGPL code.
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md: no new assets.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a Presets row to the Gradient panel featuring built-in gradients and saved presets. Applying a preset preserves the gradient’s placement and is a single undo step.
    • Save the active gradient as a named preset, delete saved presets, and show or hide the Presets row from the panel menu.
  • Documentation
    • Updated feature documentation to reflect gradient preset support.

Walkthrough

The change adds engine commands to list, apply, save, and delete gradient presets. Saved presets persist in preferences. The Gradient panel displays built-in and saved presets and provides controls to apply, save, delete, or hide presets.

Changes: Gradient presets

Layer / File(s) Summary
Preset commands and persistence
crates/engine/src/cmd.rs, crates/engine/src/cmd/gradpresets.rs, crates/engine/src/prefs.rs, crates/engine/src/tests/*
The engine registers commands to list, apply, save, and delete presets. Preset matching ignores case. Saving removes swatch links, and saved presets persist in preferences. Tests cover command behavior, active paint selection, undo, and preference round trips.
Gradient panel controls
crates/ui-egui/src/panels/gradient.rs, crates/ui-egui/src/panels/gradient/tests.rs, ROADMAP.md, docs/gaps.md, docs/target-app-parity.md, docs/ui-parity.md
The panel lists built-in and saved presets, applies selections, and provides save, delete, and visibility controls. UI tests cover these interactions. The roadmap and parity documents record the preset feature. The target-app parity document also updates other parity descriptions.

Merge Risk: Minimal · previous review 767a2

The conflicting documentation rows have been consolidated. The reviewed changes are ready to merge after normal checks.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to f7339

The commands are limited to document paint and the user’s shared preset library. Existing targeting checks and atomic document edits contain their effects. Preset storage remains best effort, and simultaneous windows can overwrite changes to the same library.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — Callers already able to invoke engine commands through automation can reach the new commands. Their effects are bounded to paint targets in the active document, default paint, and the session’s preset library, which the desktop host persists for reuse across documents. Existing width-profile commands already expose comparable preference-library mutation authority.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Desktop automation and headless execution validate parameters before engine dispatch. Session execution also applies availability and object-target checks. Although preset application clones caller parameters, these frontend checks constrain undeclared keys, and the same callers already have direct access to paint.editGradient.
  • observed — Save and delete are declared as query commands, which disables their ordinary journal recording. In the inspected execution path this classification does not confer approval, bypass availability checks, or enforce read-only access; it is not an authorization boundary.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Preset application inherits validation before document mutation and a copy-then-commit transaction across targeted objects. Ordinary validation or per-target failures therefore do not commit partial document edits; successful document changes use the existing single history-step mechanism. Preference-library mutations are separate from document undo.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the gradient panel and the three preset actions (apply, save, delete) and ties them to the G13 gap item. It matches the main change in the changeset: the presets row, the save and delete actions, and the new gradient.presets.* commands.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the repository template. It has the 'What and why' section with a clear rationale and a link to the G13 gap, and a 'How it was tested' section that lists the engine and panel tests and the local CI results. The checklist keeps the template items. Two items are ticked, and the CI item is unticked with a note that two variable-font tests fail on main. The description states that the new UI strings appear in the i18n report. It does not link a GitHub issue, but the template only asks for one if it exists.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 50.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 18 functions across 7 files. (2 skipped: 2 unsupported.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

People reuse the same gradients across documents and rebuilt them by
hand. The Gradient panel now has a Presets menu: the presets of the
app's built-in gradient libraries, grouped by library (theme), then
the saved ones. Choosing one gives the gradient behind the active
proxy (or a solid paint) the preset's type, stops, method and dither,
keeping its placement, as one undo step, through paint.editGradient.
The panel menu saves the current gradient as a preset (named in a
dialog) and deletes saved ones; Hide/Show Presets toggles the row.

Saved presets are kept with the preferences, next to the other user
preset lists (width profiles, flattener, perspective). Stops linked to
a document swatch keep their colour, unlinked, since a preset is used
in other documents. Built-in presets can't be deleted; names are
unique.

Commands: gradient.presets.list, .apply, .save and .delete. The menu's
rows are drawn only while in view, as its headings are.

Tests: engine tests for list, apply (fill and stroke, placement kept,
one undo step), save (unique names, unlinked swatch stops) and delete;
panel tests for applying from the menu and saving, deleting and
hiding presets from the panel menu, including scrolling the menu to
the saved presets. Docs: gaps G13, target-app and UI parity, ROADMAP.
