Fixes #2485

Root cause: PDF export turns raster effects (shadows, glows, blurs) into images at the document's raster effects resolution. New documents default to 72 ppi, so a square with a stroke and an Inner Glow or Drop Shadow was written as one 72 ppi image and looked blurry when zoomed or printed.

Fix: export_pdf_with_report (all PDF exports: Save as PDF, clipboard, MCP) flattens with a resolution of at least 150 ppi. Documents already at 150 ppi or more keep theirs. The document is not changed and its 72 ppi default stays; only the export works on a copy. Choice: 150 ppi floor, decided by the maintainer request; the existing 64 Mpx cap per image still limits the size, so large art gets a lower resolution with the existing warning.

Same floor for freeform gradient images: they are drawn by the PDF crate at the document ppi even when the document has no raster effects (so the flatten step never runs). The floor is now one shared vectorcraft_pdf::MIN_RASTER_PPI / pdf_raster_ppi, used by both; the 512 px side cap of the field image still holds. No other raster fallback in crates/pdf uses the document ppi.

Tests: freeform_field_image_is_at_least_150_ppi_and_capped (pdf, fails without the fix), pdf_effect_images_have_at_least_150_ppi_even_at_72 (fails without the fix).

Checks: cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine --lib (pdf, rasterfx, rastersettings filters), clippy -D warnings --lib --tests, fmt, cargo xtask layers, cargo xtask wasm, pdf crate lib tests. No docs gap changed. Overlaps nothing in #2440 beyond the same file (different functions).

Share the floor as vectorcraft_pdf::MIN_RASTER_PPI; documents without raster effects reached the PDF writer unchanged, so field images used the 72 ppi default.

This is a comment rather than an approval only because nothing has run on this head. I found no defect. No hosted check has run on 1fb04838: the Affinity 3 corpus, Windows ARM64 and the other runs for this head are all action_required, waiting for a maintainer to approve the workflow, so the new tests have not run in CI. I have not built or run it.

What I read. The whole diff (138 lines), plus export.rs at this head around field_image to check what the refactored arithmetic replaced.

What I checked, and it holds.

  • The floor. pdf_raster_ppi(doc_ppi) returns the document's value when it is finite and at least 150 and otherwise 150, so a document at 72 ppi, a NaN or an infinite value all export at 150, and 300 stays 300.
  • Copy only for export. export_pdf_with_report clones the document and raises raster_effects_ppi only when the effective value differs from the document's, so a document already at 150 ppi or more is passed through untouched, and the user's document keeps its 72 ppi default (the test asserts that).
  • Same arithmetic for freeform gradients. In field_image, long is already area.width().max(area.height()) (not the bounds), and field_size computes the same k = min(ppi / 72, 512 / long) and the same ceil().clamp(1, 512) per side, now with the floor applied. The long > 1e-9 && finite guard stays in the caller, so field_size never divides by zero.
  • Tests. The engine test checks an effect image is at least 208 px wide at 72 ppi (100 pt of art at 150 ppi), that d.raster_effects_ppi is still 72 afterwards, and that 300 ppi gives more than 1.5 times the width of the 72 ppi export. The PDF-crate test pins field_size at 72, NaN, 300 and the 512 side cap with exact numbers.

Non-blocking points.

  • "At least 150 ppi" is not true for large gradients. field_size is still capped at MAX_FIELD_PX (512 px) per side, so a freeform gradient over more than about 246 pt (512 / (150 / 72)) is drawn below 150 ppi. For a smooth colour field that is fine, but the doc comment on MIN_RASTER_PPI and the description say "at least". A sentence saying the cap wins would be accurate.
  • File size and time. 150 ppi is 4.3 times the pixels of 72 ppi per effect image, so a PDF with many shadows or glows grows by about that much before compression, and the existing 64 Mpx per-image cap is what limits the worst case. The PR already says larger art gets the existing warning; a number in the description (before and after size for one realistic file) would show the cost.
  • Whole-document clone. The raise is done by doc.clone() on every export of a default-ppi document. If Document holds images behind an Arc this is cheap; if not, it copies every image blob once per export. I could not see the type in this diff, so please confirm, or set the value on the flatten step instead of cloning.
  • Other raster consumers. The change covers export_pdf_with_report (the description says all PDF exports go through it) and the freeform gradient path. Anything else that rasterises for the PDF at the document's ppi (such as the PDF/X or print path, if it flattens separately) would still use 72; a grep for other uses of raster_effects_ppi would confirm none is left.

Validation request (head 1fb048387ae204d04146e70ac7f476a6816a41f8):

  • os: linux, windows and macos
  • commands: cargo fmt --all -- --check; cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine pdf_effect_images; cargo test -p vectorcraft-pdf freeform_field_image; export a 72 ppi document with a drop shadow and compare the PDF's image size with main
  • expected: all pass; the effect image is at least 208 px for 100 pt of art
  • holds: no hosted result, large-gradient cap wording, clone cost not verified

cargo xtask ci is incomplete or unchecked on this PR. Run it end to end (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm), tick the checklist when green, and reply here with the outcome. That is required before any approve from here.

Pushed b5321ca: merged current main and reworded the MIN_RASTER_PPI comment (pixel budgets win over the floor, so very large images can end up below 150 ppi). I also added a comment that the document clone shares image bytes, and added the change to the docs. cargo check --workspace --all-targets passes, and the pdf_effect_images, freeform_field_image and ruby_aligns tests pass locally. I have not run the full cargo xtask ci, so that checkbox stays open.

Walkthrough

PDF export now uses a minimum raster resolution of 150 PPI for raster effects and freeform gradients. The engine applies the minimum to a cloned document when needed, leaving the source setting unchanged. Freeform-gradient rasterization retains its 512-pixel side cap.

Changes: PDF Raster Resolution

Layer / File(s) Summary
PDF raster sizing and documentation
crates/pdf/src/export.rs, crates/pdf/src/lib.rs, docs/file-format-parity.md, docs/roadmap.md, docs/target-app-parity.md
The PDF crate adds a 150-PPI minimum and resolution normalization. Freeform-gradient sizing uses the normalized resolution and retains the 512-pixel side cap. Tests cover lower, invalid, and higher resolutions and the cap. Public exports and documentation describe the behavior.
Engine PDF export integration
crates/engine/src/cmd/rasterfx.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_pdfraster.rs
When the configured raster-effects resolution is below the PDF minimum, the engine exports a cloned document with the minimum applied. Regression tests check embedded image width and confirm that the original document setting remains unchanged.

Priority: Normal

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Suggested reviewers: bflatastic

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to b7994

Some PDF exports can still contain blurry explicitly rasterized effects, and the roadmap status needs correction before merge.

Security architecture risk: Minimal · up to b7994

The export policy increases raster quality without changing saved document settings. Existing per-image limits and cancellation handling remain in place. No material security risk was identified in the inspected export paths.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated security-relevant effect is increased rendering work and image data during document export. At an uncapped 72-PPI setting, raising resolution to 150 PPI produces approximately 4.34 times as many pixels for fixed geometry; the inspected per-image limits remain unchanged.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Document-controlled resolution and geometry feed raster rendering. The shared helper normalizes low or non-finite resolution values, while existing downstream sizing controls continue to constrain individual generated images. The helper is a rendering policy, not an authorization control.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The resolution change introduces no persisted export transition requiring rollback: working documents are local clones. Cancellation during flattening is checked before encoding, preventing that partially flattened copy from being exported through this wrapper. Existing image-generation failures retain the original object rather than modifying the source document.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue [#2485] requires clear PDF output when raster effects are enabled. export_pdf_with_report now applies vectorcraft_pdf::pdf_raster_ppi to a cloned document before flattening. The shared floor is 150 ppi, higher document resolutions remain unchanged, and the source document remains unchanged. The regression test pdf_effect_images_have_at_least_150_ppi_even_at_72 covers the reported 72 ppi case. The freeform gradient test covers the related shared PDF rasterization rule.

Apply the PDF floor to explicit Rasterize-effect resolutions.

When a visible object has a Rasterize effect with ppi: 72, the PDF export copy raises only doc.raster_effects_ppi. rasterize_effect_image passes the explicit r.ppi to rasterize_art, so that image can remain at 72 ppi. Apply the PDF floor to this path while preserving the document setting and other export formats.

Merged main to pick up the vertical-ruby test fix (95f5033) that made FreeBSD x86_64 fail; docs conflicts only (roadmap.md, target-app-parity.md, both sides kept). Ran: cargo fmt --check, cargo check --workspace --all-targets, tests for the text and pdf crates and the engine pdfraster tests.

Thanks @vangel76. Holding this for the project owner: a 150 ppi floor for raster effects in PDF export overrides the document's Raster Effects resolution, and I can't find public documentation that the reference app does that, so it's a product decision rather than a parity fix.

Remove the shipped PDF-resolution item from M4's Left list.

The exporter change and revision entry describe the 150 ppi behavior as landed. This row still lists it as missing. Remove that clause from Left or move it into the completed M4 description.

As per coding guidelines, the milestone row must reflect the landed task.

Merged current main and ran cargo xtask ci end to end (all 12 steps green; only SonarCloud is red, which fails on every PR in this repo because of the shared workflow). This is the last update from me on this PR for now. Each update costs a full cargo xtask ci run plus the rebuild after every upstream merge, and with this many conflicts it no longer fits what I can spend on VectorCraft. I'm pausing new VectorCraft PRs and updates after this round; this PR is ready to merge as it is.

Merged current main. Main now draws linear and radial gradient images (dither, perceptual) through the same code as freeform ones, so the 150 ppi floor applies to those images too. I changed the two gradient tests to use 300 ppi, so they still show that a higher document resolution wins. cargo xtask ci passes locally (all 12 steps).
