What and why

On main at cb0a7d9, set a copyright with file.info {"author": "Ada Lovelace", "copyrightStatus": "copyrighted", "copyrightNotice": "(c) 2026 Ada", "copyrightUrl": "https://example.com/rights"}, export with document.export {"format": "pdf", "preserveEditing": false} and open the file with document.open. file.info then gives back the author, but copyrightStatus is "unknown" and the notice and URL are empty. vectorcraft_pdf::file_info finds no copyright in a saved .ai either. The PDF writer's metadata has no copyright fields, so the XMP packet carries none of them, although #2299 reads them from dc:rights, xmpRights:WebStatement and xmpRights:Marked.

PDF export and PDF-compatible .ai and .ait saves now add the three properties to the XMP packet after the writer has written it (post::rights, beside post::modification_date). xmpRights:Marked is True for Copyrighted and False for Public Domain, and is left out for Unknown, as the reader maps it. The notice and URL are escaped for XML, and characters XML 1.0 does not allow are left out. A document without a copyright gets none of the properties. docs/mcp.md (File Info) and one line in docs/target-app-parity.md describe them.

How it was tested

  • tests_file_info::a_written_pdf_gives_its_copyright_back reads the notice, URL and status back with file_info from plain, PDF/A-2b, PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-4 files for each status, with the writer's own properties and the PDF/X-4 identification still there.
  • tests_fileinfo::an_exported_pdf_opens_with_its_file_info now also checks the copyright after document.open, and tests_fileinfo::a_pdf_compatible_ai_carries_the_copyright checks a .ai save.

All three fail on cb0a7d9 at their first copyright check, and the first also fails with the escaping or the Marked mapping broken.

Targeted checks: cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-pdf --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo clippy -p vectorcraft-engine --all-targets -- -D warnings, cargo fmt --all -- --check, cargo test -p vectorcraft-pdf --lib (328 passed), cargo test -p vectorcraft-engine --lib -- tests_fileinfo (14 passed), cargo xtask brands, cargo xtask layers and cargo xtask assets.

On Windows 11 (x86-64) with rustc 1.99.0, on top of main at cb0a7d9:

  • CRAFT_FONTS_DIR=<craft-fonts checkout> cargo xtask ci passes its 10 steps: 8,791 tests passed, 0 failed, 13 ignored.

git merge-tree reports no conflicts with main at cb0a7d9. The branch adds no conflicting file to any open pull request that changes the same files, among them #2552, #2509, #2326 and #2894 in crates/pdf/src/export.rs and #3387 in crates/pdf/src/file_info.rs.

Checklist

  • cargo xtask ci passes (fmt, clippy, tests, assets, brands, layers, wasm).
  • No panics in shipped code: no unwrap(), expect(), panic!, unreachable!, todo! or
unimplemented! outside tests, and no unchecked indexing on data from files, parameters or
messages. Errors are returned as Result and shown to the user
    (why and how).
  • Clean-room: nothing copied from Adobe products or GPL/AGPL code (AGENTS.md).
  • Every new asset has a row in ASSETS.md.

📝 Walkthrough

PDF export now writes document copyright notice, URL, and known copyright status to catalog XMP metadata. Tests cover export and reopening behavior, and documentation describes the metadata mapping.

Changes: Copyright metadata export

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build copyright XMP properties
crates/pdf/src/file_info.rs, crates/pdf/src/post.rs
The PDF post-processing code generates escaped notice and URL properties, maps known copyright statuses to XMP values, and handles missing or malformed XMP metadata.
Apply and verify copyright metadata
crates/pdf/src/export.rs, crates/pdf/src/tests_file_info.rs, crates/engine/src/tests_fileinfo.rs, docs/mcp.md, docs/target-app-parity.md
The export pipeline applies copyright properties. Tests cover PDF and PDF-compatible AI export and reopening. Documentation describes the metadata fields and status mapping.

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 46268

The copyright export work is documented, but the parity document’s progress fields still need updating. This is a bounded documentation issue rather than an established export failure.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 46268

The change is limited to copyright information in exported files. The reviewed paths preserve existing encryption behavior and treat supplied text as data. No introduced security concern was established; downstream-reader compatibility remains only partially validated.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated propagation is from document metadata into exported file artifacts and their existing readers. The supplied relationships describe upstream parser and test dependencies, not evidence of a new cross-service or privileged execution path.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Potentially untrusted notice and URL strings enter XML character data through escaping that also removes XML-disallowed characters. Inserted property prefixes declare their namespaces. The URL is serialized as text, not fetched by this writer. The existing reader retains its decoded-size and nesting limits.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Metadata is borrowed immutably and edits build a separate output buffer. Invalid edits or malformed required metadata structures return errors before final export publication. Both normal and fast-web-view fallback paths retain encryption after the new stage; no new return of intermediate plaintext was found in the inspected pipeline.

- Desktop print transport uses `craft-print` for CUPS and modern Windows. Sheet composition, copies, separations and colour management remain in VectorCraft; Windows 7 retains WMI and the installed PDF viewer. The print-preview and physical-device fidelity gaps remain, so print scores and hours are unchanged.
- A PDF, PDF-compatible `.ai` or `.ait` opened from its pages or its editing copy opens with the File Info that its XMP packet and its document information dictionary give: the author, description, keywords, copyright status, notice and URL, and the created and modified dates, the XMP packet's value where both give one; the title is not changed (`crates/pdf/src/tests_file_info.rs`, `crates/engine/src/tests_fileinfo.rs`).
- PDF export and PDF-compatible `.ai` and `.ait` saves write the document's File Info created date as the file's creation date, or the time of writing when the document has none, and the time of writing as its modification date; the page information mark still prints the time of writing (`crates/engine/src/tests_fileinfo.rs`, `crates/pdf/src/tests.rs`, `crates/pdf/src/tests_marks.rs`).
- PDF export and PDF-compatible `.ai` and `.ait` saves write File Info's copyright notice, URL and status to the XMP packet (`dc:rights`, `xmpRights:WebStatement`, `xmpRights:Marked`), so a PDF or `.ai` opened from its pages keeps them (`crates/pdf/src/tests_file_info.rs`, `crates/engine/src/tests_fileinfo.rs`).

Update the parity progress fields with this evidence.

This change adds an evidence bullet but does not update the Files (M4) area row, the document’s status line, or its revision history. Update those fields in the same PR so the parity assessment records the completed work. As per coding guidelines: “When a task lands, update in the same PR: the area row in docs/target-app-parity.md (score, missing items, hours) and its evidence list” and “Update each touched doc’s status line and revision history.”

…ice and URL

The PDF writer's metadata has no copyright fields, so the XMP packet of
PDF exports and PDF-compatible .ai and .ait saves left out File Info's
copyright status, notice and URL. A PDF exported without its editing
data opened with the status Unknown and an empty notice and URL,
although the reader takes them from dc:rights, xmpRights:WebStatement
and xmpRights:Marked.

The export now adds those three properties to the XMP packet after
the writer has written it, as it does for the modification date.
Marked is True for Copyrighted and False for Public Domain, and is left
out for Unknown. The notice and URL are escaped for XML, and characters
XML 1.0 does not allow are left out. A document without a copyright
gets none of the properties.
