feat(forms): edit checkbox and radio export values (#231) - #1952
Adds editing of checkbox and radio-button export values in individual field properties and form_set_props (export_value plus a 1-based widget index). form_fields exposes the per-widget export values.
The edit writes /Opt and preserves appearance-state names, /AP, /AS, current /V and default /DV. Shared on-state widgets stay consistent. Invalid indices, empty/Off values, ambiguous mappings and conflicting export values are rejected before modification. Export-only edits do not regenerate custom appearances.
XFDF, FDF, XML, CSV and TXT exports use the mapped values; import round trips are covered. Updated crate documentation, parity notes and roadmap. No assets or dependencies added.
Current refresh (2026-10-16)
Normal merge of tested upstream 5fdd820bdb1ab9705bd2c5d956d32d195140c7d8 at a99f1ab9cb692204cbb2d731da927ca523db6a54; exact tested tree 09d0b8c68b9a56ce58c4662baab9ab7203f84728.
Catalog and attribution conflicts are resolved while retaining the Export value translations and upstream snapshot notices. No unmerged work was incorporated.
Linux Rust 1.99 scoped validation: 265 passed, 0 failed, 0 ignored — forms 81, XFDF 35, form_bulk 5, prepare unit 1, prepare/create integration 28, catalog 115. One runtime prerequisite skip occurred for Telugu glyph checks because the optional font was absent.
Formatting, strict touched-crate all-target Clippy, layers, assets, parity and scoped WASM passed. Source manifests remained unchanged. Scoped WASM reported seven unchanged-main dead-code warnings and an excluded-font notice; parity retained the existing 97-feature automation advisory.
No full workspace sweep or new Windows GUI run was performed. Earlier Windows evidence below remains historical. Current-head hosted CI is separate and pending.
Historical refresh (2026-10-15)
Historical head: b05a06e8e215ac1a9b9a3e8d8ad52195f5ba100e, normal merge of repaired main dc41044ba78f6cef2ff4bdb14d19272f54ad6aea.
The review follow-up adds locked checkbox/radio export-edit refusal coverage with byte-identical document checks and a standalone translated "Export value" label. The latest refresh resolves the three catalog/attribution conflicts while retaining main's repaired translation coverage and parity metadata.
Catalog checks reported115 passed and zero failed; three optional glyph checks self-skipped without the optional font input.
Formatting, strict touched-crate all-target Clippy, assets, layering, parity and scoped WASM all passed.
Source comparison passed; no production or assertion edits during testing.
The old Windows run on403323f failed only the save/signing baseline cases now fixed by the merged main. The previously baseline-identical catalog/parity failures also pass after this refresh. Hosted CI for the new head is separate and pending. No full-workspace or new native Windows/macOS GUI validation is claimed.
Previous head: e2be8db. The latest commit changes only crates/ui-egui/tests/create.rs to stabilize Reduce tests; the production feature scope is unchanged.
Initial focused validation
Production code was initially tested at tree e4b262e2b9aa32419489658858b7f686a7aa4f60. Earlier head 0e8d4d7 added roadmap/parity documentation and a separately verified stronger UI regression.
Forms: 69 passed.
XFDF: 31 passed, including all five data-format round trips.
Automation form_bulk: 5 passed, including export-edit undo and save/reopen.
cargo check --all-targets on forms, xfdf, automation and ui-egui: passed.
Scoped cargo fmt --check: passed.
Five remove-change/restore diagnostics failed without the relevant change and passed with it: validation, /Opt writing, automation parsing, UI propagation and XFDF mapping.
Those commands used --offline --locked, -j 2 and --test-threads=2. This was focused validation, not a full workspace test run. Scoped clippy --all-targets -- -D warnings passed on the four changed crates with installed Rust 1.99 (the Rust 1.95 clippy component was unavailable).
After refreshing onto merged main c1a41cc at 4ee79bd, tested tree 729c2a5646338e3775db8757dd14deb318532a16 passed 199 Linux tests (forms 69; XFDF 31; form-bulk 5; prepare 14; open-worker 11; commands 23; recovery 11; pickers 35). Both previously failing deferred-tool/recent-menu cases passed in the full commands binary. Formatting, scoped all-target check, strict clippy, native build, layers, assets, parity and 31-crate WASM also passed with CI Rust 1.99 and pinned craft-fonts.
Native Wayland app validation on that tree passed for checkbox and radio export-value typing, Cancel, Apply, Undo, Redo, Save, Close and Reopen. Saved-file inspection confirmed checkbox export Accepted and radio option Small persisted. Windows native GUI validation was not repeated on that refreshed tree.
The local full-workspace build stopped at the configured 20 GiB target-size cap before completing workspace tests; this was a resource limit, not a completed local full-suite result. No unmerged PR work was integrated.
Tested tree: 55f5ed3b34f45f73a20c53a1b571ed19d7e35259. The follow-up uses a fixed test clock for creation/optimization metadata and exclusive Reduce output directories. The assertions are unchanged.
New local validation on Linux with CI Rust 1.99 and pinned craft-fonts passed: formatting, strict all-target clippy, all 11 create UI tests, 20/20 repeat runs of reduce_file_size_saves_nothing_when_the_file_is_already_small, layers, assets and the 31-crate WASM check. The 199-test and native-app results above are historical validation of 4ee79bd and were not repeated for this test-only follow-up.
Hosted CI for exact head e2be8db is green: Windows, Ubuntu, wasm32, and dependency licences/advisories passed; fuzz was skipped. CI run 38557409668, verified 2026-10-14 at 12:00 UTC. These hosted checks do not constitute new Windows native GUI validation.
The UI regression clicks the labelled export-value text input, selects all and types through egui_kittest, then exercises Cancel/OK/Undo. That stronger test and formatting passed unchanged. Native Wayland coverage and its tested revision are documented above.
Export values are individual-widget edits; bulk editing is intentionally unsupported.
No new unsafe code, external network access, fonts or other assets. Implemented with AI assistance.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Checkbox and radio button export values can be edited per widget in form properties and through automation.
Form field data now includes button export values, and edits preserve appearance and selection states. Changes support undo and persist after saving and reopening.

Documentation
Added guidance on editing export values, validation rules, and supported behavior.
CI follow-up at 0e8d4d7: the deferred-tool command regression also fails on the isolated clean base 7437bde, so that failure is not introduced by this form-export change. Both head and clean base fail the 'picked file open' assertion in a_tool_chosen_with_no_document_asks_for_one_and_runs_on_it.
The hosted Windows run also failed the recent-file menu regression. That second failure is not established as a baseline failure: the clean-base Linux run passed it. The two named regressions both passed in an independent run of #1634 at 6d1f5c2, which addresses the background-open ordering path, but no unmerged work has been pulled into this PR.
Recent-menu follow-up at unchanged 0e8d4d7: the_open_recent_menu_lists_files_and_opens_one passed 5/5 focused runs on this head and 5/5 on clean base 7437bde on Linux. The same exact test also passed 5/5 on each snapshot in the Windows VM using separately cross-built x86_64-pc-windows-gnu test binaries.
The original four post-click harness steps and assertions were unchanged. Both reached two tabs and the expected active recent-file path. No head/base difference or failure reproduced. The Linux diagnostic runs also confirmed tabs=2, active=Some(1).
This narrows the gap but does not explain or clear the hosted MSVC Windows failure in run 38439364465: compiler, single-test scheduling and VM conditions differ from hosted full-suite CI. The separate deferred-tool baseline failure remains as documented above. No production changes or unmerged branch integration were made.
Refreshed onto merged main c1a41cc, preserving the #231 export-value scope. Tested tree: 729c2a5646338e3775db8757dd14deb318532a16.
Linux validation on that tree: 199 passed, 0 failed (forms 69; XFDF 31; form-bulk 5; prepare 14; open-worker 11; commands 23; recovery 11; pickers 35). Pushed on 2026-10-14 at 11:33 UTC. The follow-up changes only crates/ui-egui/tests/create.rs: a fixed test clock keeps creation and optimization metadata identical across wall-clock seconds, and each Reduce test claims an exclusive output directory. The assertions are unchanged. Tested tree: 55f5ed3b34f45f73a20c53a1b571ed19d7e35259.
Reviewed at e2be8db and ran it natively on Windows 11 x64: pdfcraft-forms (69 passed), pdfcraft-xfdf (31), pdfcraft-automation --test form_bulk (5) and pdfcraft-ui-egui --test prepare (14), all green; clippy with -D warnings is clean for the touched crates.
The logic looks right to me. The export value is written through /Opt on the field, so the appearance-state names (and with them the selected and default state) are untouched. Import maps values back through state_for, so FDF/XFDF/XML/CSV/TXT round-trip the edited value. Input is validated before anything is modified, and invalid input is refused with the document byte-identical, which the tests check directly. Widgets sharing an on-state keep the same export value, as Acrobat does.
Two small things, neither blocking:
The tool description says a locked field leaves every field unchanged, but no test covers that for export_value. A one-line case next to the existing refusal test would pin it.
The Properties row reuses the "Export Value: {on}" string with {on} set to "", so the label renders as "Export Value: " with a trailing colon and space, and translators see a placeholder that's always empty. A separate "Export value" string would read better.
It now conflicts with main in ROADMAP.md, crates/automation/README.md, crates/forms/src/tests.rs, crates/ui-egui/tests/create.rs and crates/xfdf/src/tests.rs. Once it's rebased I'm happy to re-run the Windows set.

Adding both and resolving conflicts now. @mtlcl410
@mtlcl410 Addressed both follow-ups and refreshed against main in 403323f. The new regression attempts export-value plus tooltip edits on locked checkbox and radio fields, requires refusal, and verifies the serialized document is unchanged. The label is now the standalone translated “Export value”. All five merge conflicts are resolved while retaining main’s changes.
Linux Rust 1.99: 150 focused behavioral tests passed; formatting, strict touched-crate all-target Clippy, assets, layering and scoped WASM passed. The six catalog failures and parity duplicate evidence key reproduce on pristine main; details and exact tested diff are in the updated PR body. No new Windows GUI test is claimed. Your Windows recheck of the refreshed head would be useful when convenient.
Re-ran the Windows set on 403323f: pdfcraft-forms 81, pdfcraft-xfdf 35, form_bulk 5 and prepare 16, all passed, and clippy with -D warnings is clean for forms, xfdf, automation and ui-egui. The locked-field regression and the standalone "Export value" label look good, thanks.
The six i18n failures aren't from this PR. They are zh-hant's duplicate keys (#2414) and the vi/lt catalogue gaps (#2510), and both were merged into main at 14:50, so rebasing onto the current main should clear them.
Thanks for the Windows recheck. I merged repaired main dc41044 into b05a06e and resolved the catalog/attribution conflicts. Linux Rust 1.99 validation now passes all 150 focused behavioral tests, the catalog checks (115 reported passed; three optional glyph checks self-skipped), formatting, strict touched-crate all-target Clippy, assets, layering, parity and scoped WASM. The former catalog/parity baseline failures are clear. The new hosted CI is queued; these results do not claim a full local workspace run or a new Windows GUI run.
@mtlcl410 Refreshed normally against main 5fdd820 at a99f1ab, resolving catalog/attribution conflicts while preserving Export value translations and upstream snapshot notices. Linux Rust 1.99 scoped checks: 265 passed, 0 failed, 0 ignored, with one optional Telugu-font prerequisite skip. Formatting, strict touched-crate Clippy, layers, assets, parity and scoped WASM passed; source manifests unchanged. Detailed warning/advisory caveats are in the description. No full workspace sweep or new Windows GUI run; earlier Windows evidence is historical. New-head hosted CI is pending.
Preserve caption editing and current form/Prepare module boundaries. Carry export-only appearance preservation, validation and data round-trip tests to their current paths, and retain current attribution metadata. Hosted CI must validate this refreshed head.
Checkbox and radio export values can now be edited per widget through form authoring, Prepare properties, and automation. Form data export uses the mapped values. Tests cover validation, undo, persistence, and data-format round trips.

Merge Risk: Low · up to e19f9
A narrow class of FDF radio export values can fail to round-trip correctly; the change is otherwise mergeable with follow-up for this edge case.
Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to e19f9
Separating export values from visual state names is a contained design change, but the FDF path can reinterpret valid export text and no longer accounts for the actual values it emits. Crafted documents can therefore change imported selections or exceed the intended export-size limit. The identified exposure requires processing or exporting an affected document; broader service or tenant impact is not established.
Retained concerns
Medium · security · inferred: FDF export charges its 64 MiB budget against f.value but now emits potentially much larger mapped export values. Document-supplied /Opt strings therefore bypass the intended output-data accounting. The authoring edit limit does not restore the aggregate bound, and the completed output has no final byte-limit check. This weakens failure containment for crafted-document export.
Medium · security · inferred: Literal /Opt strings now enter an encoding path intended for escaped appearance-state names. For example, the permitted export value #4Fff becomes Off in FDF, which import treats as an unselected value. Other escaped values can collide with another widget's state or become unmatchable. The base exported the original appearance-state identity instead. This introduces cross-format data-integrity failures, without establishing an authorization bypass.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The demonstrated attack surface is document-controlled button mappings processed by FDF export, and selections in documents receiving the resulting data. Export is reachable through Session export_data. Resource impact concerns the exporting process; evidence does not establish cross-tenant exposure, elevated privileges, or a hosted-service deployment.
Security Findings and Attack Paths
inferred — A crafted document can pair short selected state names with large mapped export strings. FDF charges the short names but appends the mapped strings, including PDF-name escaping expansion, allowing output growth beyond its intended 64 MiB data budget. The retained node cap limits field count but does not restore the byte bound.
inferred — A permitted literal export value containing #XX syntax can acquire a different identity in FDF. The example #4Fff becomes Off and can clear an imported selection, subject to existing selection constraints. An escaped value matching another on-state can instead select that widget. This is a data-integrity path, not a demonstrated privilege or policy bypass.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — CSV export applies its existing formula guard to the mapped values, and XML export escapes value text. Those controls remain in the serialization path rather than being bypassed by the new mapping.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
observed — The added multi-format test checks mapped current selections after importing ordinary values such as Accepted and Small. It provides useful normal-path counterevidence, but does not exercise escaped literal export values or mapped-value byte-budget exhaustion.

Preserve literal #XX sequences in FDF export values.
If a radio export value is A#41, name_bytes(&v) converts it to the bytes for AA. FDF import then reads AA, so it cannot restore the original radio selection.
Update the FDF export/import representation so literal /Opt values survive the round trip, and add a test for A#41. Changing name_bytes globally is not sufficient because it is also the inverse of name_text.

Unwrap the FDF export result before building exports.
export_fdf(...) returns Result<Vec<u8>, DataError>, but the first vector element is Vec<u8>. The new test does not compile, so the workspace all-target Clippy gate cannot run. The reported unsized-value error at Line 1259 follows from this mismatch. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

Assert the imported button values.
target already contains the "Accepted" and "Small" export values before import. The current assertions do not detect an importer that leaves the false and "L" selections unchanged. Compare the imported values with values(&doc) for every format.
Suggested test assertion
import(&mut target, &bytes).unwrap();
+ assert_eq!(values(&target), values(&doc));
let fs = fields(&target);

Review comment at @crates/xfdf/src/tests.rs at line 1257:
In the format loop that imports each export into target, assert that
values(&target) matches values(&doc) immediately after import succeeds. Keep
this check inside the loop so every exported format verifies the imported button
values.

What this changes
Fixes #231.

No unmerged work was incorporated.
Linux Rust 1.99 scoped validation: 265 passed, 0 failed, 0 ignored — forms 81, XFDF 35, form_bulk 5, prepare unit 1, prepare/create integration 28, catalog 115. One runtime prerequisite skip occurred for Telugu glyph checks because the optional font was absent.
Formatting, strict touched-crate all-target Clippy, layers, assets, parity and scoped WASM passed. Source manifests remained unchanged. Scoped WASM reported seven unchanged-main dead-code warnings and an excluded-font notice; parity retained the existing 97-feature automation advisory.
No full workspace sweep or new Windows GUI run was performed. Earlier Windows evidence below remains historical. Current-head hosted CI is separate and pending.

The latest refresh resolves the three catalog/attribution conflicts while retaining main's repaired translation coverage and parity metadata.

Earlier review follow-up.
Historical verification
Previous head: e2be8db. The latest commit changes only crates/ui-egui/tests/create.rs to stabilize Reduce tests; the production feature scope is unchanged.
Initial focused validation
Production code was initially tested at tree e4b262e2b9aa32419489658858b7f686a7aa4f60. Earlier head 0e8d4d7 added roadmap/parity documentation and a separately verified stronger UI regression.
Refresh validation at 4ee79bd
Previous test-only follow-up at e2be8db
Detailed validation history and current results.
Review notes
The UI regression clicks the labelled export-value text input, selects all and types through egui_kittest, then exercises Cancel/OK/Undo. That stronger test and formatting passed unchanged. Native Wayland coverage and its tested revision are documented above.
Export values are individual-widget edits; bulk editing is intentionally unsupported.
No new unsafe code, external network access, fonts or other assets. Implemented with AI assistance.
